Vedic Maths is designed more towards the speed (mental) and the western system is more theoratical (more steps involved thus more systematic). Learn both and become smart at Mathematics. this is a nice trick. I wanted to make sure it works in all cases, so I translated the trick into math and I get:
    ab = 100*(a+b-100) + (a-100)(b-100)
    ab = 100a +100b - 10000 + ab - 100a - 100b + 10000
    ab = ab
    seems good to me. cheers

      +Michiel Drost hey! Can u explain to me plz

    • @michieldrost9396
      @michieldrost9396 9 років тому +3

      +Ghnimi Farah , The trick explained in the video uses individual digits instead of the numeric value of the number. This means that the equation changes from; 98x97 to; (90 + 8) x (90 + 7). You can expand this further into; (9x10 + 8) x (9x10 + 7). Having said this, we can look at the trick.
      He says he uses a base 100 to which his numbers deviate from. The number 98 is 2 short of a 100, so we can say it's -2 away form 100. If the number was 102, it would be 2 away from a 100. That we use the - symbol is important as it tells us if we're a bit short or not. And, of course, 97 is -3 away from a 100.
      The trick compiles the answer back into digits. So we need to take the decimal placement into account when calculating the answer. In the video this isn't done, because you don't have to when you're using pen and paper. After all, you can write digits anywhere you want.
      So, lets look at the equation used in this video; 98x97=?
      I'm going to replace the two numbers with their own variable a and b.
      a = 98,
      b = 97.
      98x97 = a x b = ab
      The first two digits of the answer is, 98 - 3, which is also 98 + -3.
      The -3 is the result of taking the number 97(which is b) and subtract the base(a 100) from it. Then we add this to 98(which is a) So, the first few digits are a + (b - 100). Note that the brackets aren't needed, but they show you what belongs to what as we reason our way through this problem. If b - 100 results in a negative number, then the + becomes - instead. This happens to be the case in our example.
      We also need to take decimal placement into account. The video shows us that the first digits are in the hundreds. So (a + b - 100) needs to be multiplied 100 times to get the answer in the right decimal place.
      We now have; 100*(a + b - 100).
      The next step in the trick is the find the last two digits. He explains that we get them by multiplying -2 with -3, to get 6, and then add them to the other digits. Well, -2 and -3 are the result of 98-100 and 97-100, these are multiplied together.
      So this becomes; (98-100)*(97-100)
      And now with variables; (a-100)*(b-100)
      This we add to our earlier found digits. I'll remove the unnessecary symbols. We now have;
      100(a + b - 100) + (a - 100)(b - 100)
      And that's it. Thats when the trick does. Just because it's on the internet doesn't make it true. So we need to check if it's mathematically consistant.
      To check if ab indead equals 100(a+b-100) + (a-100)(b-100) we use some algebra.
      step 1: write equation
      ab = 100(a+b-100) + (a-100)(b-100)
      step 2: distribution law
      ab = 100a + 100b - 10000 + b(a - 100) - 100(a - 100)
      step 3: repeat one more time
      ab = 100a + 100b - 10000 + ab -100b -100a + 10000
      step 4: organize variable groups
      ab = 100a -100a +100b -100b -10000 +10000 +ab
      step 5: add variable groups
      ab = 0a +0b +0 +ab
      step 6: remove unneeded math expressions
      ab = ab
      QED
      Since ab indead equals ab, we can say this trick works which all numbers in all cases. However, since it's based on using 100 as base, it works best if you use numbers close to 100.
      I hope this helps. Happy new year.

    This method does invariably work.
    What he's effectively saying is this:
    Let A and B be two numbers less than 100 and let An = 100 - A and Bn = 100 - B. Then
    A* B = (100 - An) *(100 - Bn) = 100*100 - 100*Bn - 100*An + An*Bn = 100(100 - Bn) - 100*An + An*Bn = 100*B - 100*An + An*Bn = 100(B-An) + An*Bn.
    Since both A and B are less than 100, 100(B-An) is a number less than or equal to 9800, that's why he places the result of 100(B-An) as the two most significant digits.
    Since A and B are symmetrical, you also have A*B = 100(A-Bn) + An*Bn.

      192 * 124 = (200 - 8) * 124 = 24 800 - 992 = 23 808
      8 * 124 = 8 * (125 - 1) = 1000 - 8 = 992

      Technically, it works for all numbers under 100, but it is easy to use this trick for numbers between 90 and 99. In fact, if you know how to do multiplication for 10-19, you can calculate 80-89 fairly quickly too
      However, anything lower than 80 is a bit too hard since you will be doing a 2 digit multiplication on the last step, which is not very easy

      @adonisibrahim4182 8 років тому +1

      +vinod patel It can be for all numbers under 100, but if you were to do 5*5 then you have to multiply 95 by 95, so it will be easier to only do from 99 to 90 but works for all numbers below 100

      dane dani
      65 x 87
      65= 100 - 35
      87= 100 - 13
      65-13 = 87-35 = 52
      put down 5200 because we are working with 100
      35 x13=455
      now 5200+455=5655
      check 65×87=5655
      system still works but slows down when you get smaller and smaller numbers than 100 being multiplied together.

    This is where this method comes from:
    98 x 97 = (100 - 2) x (100 - 3) ==> This is where the -2 and -3 comes from!
    = 100 x 100 - 3 x 100 - 2 x 100 + 2 x 3
    Note: -2 x -3 = 2 x 3.
    Factor 100, our "base" in this problem, from the first three terms:
    = 100 x (100 - 3 - 2) + 2 x 3
    = 100 x (100 - 2 - 3) + 2 x 3
    This last one seems obvious and may even seem pointless at first but I wrote this out to show the method. We can either do 98 - 3 or 97 - 2 to obtain 95 and this is because it doesn't matter whether we subtract 2 or 3 first from 100. Get this?
    = 95 x 100 + 2 x 3
    = 9,500 + 6 = 9,506
    I like using these "base" shortcuts. After some practice you can start to do these pretty fast! You are free to pick a base that is convenient for the problem. A base of 100 was convenient for this problem.
    Enjoy!

    Is there a way to simplify the math when the numbers aren't in the 90's? For example: 63x 47 you end up having to multiply 37x53 which defeats the purpose to begin with.
