Southbound to Spain

- We are now in the latter half of August and it is time to plan our departure from Ireland before the winter gales commence. But the storms come early. On the night of August 19 storm Ellen comes crashing into the south coast of Ireland, packing winds near hurricane force. Then five days later comes storm Francis. Finally, on September 4, a decent weather window opens up for a southbound sailing craft to cross the Bay of Biscay, and I do not waste it.

You're still the truest form of old school sailor on UA-cam! It's always inspiring to watch one of your productions. Fair winds Captain.
I love your videos. Just you and an engineless boat. Sailing, no bikini girls. Thanks
could Ruth Avery be considered a "bimini girl?" :-) Seriously, totally agree!
I done that same trip in 1995 with a similar sized boat, again single handed. My starting point was Castletownsend a bit further west from Kinsale.
It was late September when I set off, which was the time of the Autumnal gales. I got half a days respite before the next frontal system hit me. The seas were huge and gave my 3 ton plastic tub a real workout. I followed the old sailing ships advise by keeping my westings to 12 deg west before heading southwest in order to avoid being embayed in Biscay. Of the 10 days it took me to reach Bayona, I had 8 days of gales or near gale force winds with seas to match. Didn't even put an entry in the log as most of the time I was just hanging on. My plan was to make for a waypoint approx 50nm nw of Cape Finisterre and then head for Bayona. Once into the sphere of the Azores high, the snot green seas were left behind, the sun shone and the Spanish beer sure tasted good.
Me too, little 27 footer, from Milford Haven, then west of The Scillies and down to La Coruna. In September. They said, "bit late to be crossing Biscay", I said, "it's just a bay..."
Had a few days of force 5/6, tremendous seas, but from the north-west. 7 days, 550 miles.
@@girlinagale Did you leave from Neyland?
@@sklenars I went to Neyland for shopping, and purchased a chart there, then to Dale for a few nights and left from there.
@@girlinagale I was a regular visitor to Neyland marina and knew the local watering holes well. My first stop was always Dale after the crossing from Cork to wait for a suitable tide. I live in the south island of New Zealand now after arriving here in 1998 on the same boat. 9 months of that was spent holed up in Viana do Castello, Portugal.
@@sklenars I stopped at Viana De Castello after the spanish rias. Then carried on to Lexious and wintered in Peniche.
Made my heart warm when I noticed you keeping your log.
Very impressive doing everything without the need to have a motor. 👍
Scilly island’s is pronounced Silly
Love your journey and welcome to the fair isles
Thoroughly enjoy all your videos. Thankyou
Oh man, watching you sail off the hook in that bay with a current under your keel gave me the screaming abdabs - you do old school sailing that leaves my mouth agape every week. Power to your elbow.
Thanks once again for taking us along.
Fair winds and calm seas on your journey from Kinsale to Spain and then home bound. When can we expect you back to Deltaville?
May, perhaps ... fair winds, Al.
Sorry double poster ,but had to watch again .you make it sound so easy lol thanks so much marty
Excellent. Thank you for posting
Another great passage. Looks very tranquil. Wish I could be in a place like that. Great videos.
Still going strong💪 respect
As with all the other comments, very enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.

What is that line hanging off of the end of your boom and into the water on the starboard side?
The third reef line
I heard about some aggressive Orcas attacking boats destroying rudders off the coast of Spain & Portugal
No kidding?! 😱
Or are you just pulling his leg?
I've heard that as well, not sure what is really happening.
@@howtosailoceans1423 Might be as simple as one angry Orca or pod retaliating for a boat strike or coming to see boats as the enemy
@@notwhatiwasraised2b Or maybe they are just trying to knock the sardines out of the can? :-O
Greg Pearcey I think you are right. Could also be food competition
What is the thing that the bell is hanging on? It doesn’t seem to get used much, seems to block your view.
Boom gallows
Oop ... dragging a line.
@How to Sail Oceans so does this means you not comming to portugal?
Doesn't look like it, Canaries next ...
I want a teeShirt
See the link below the vid ... thanks!
Do you ever fish?
I used to. Lost all my gear and never replaced it.
Please keep these coming .. those who can’t do follow vicariously through others... thank you
Masterful passage, spectacular footage, honest content, wonderful drone work of Ruth Avery awaiting a blow...what else does a man need to spur himself to recall those decks! Thanks Kevin
Would be cool if perhaps you talked about your log. What you write in it etc
consistently the best sailing channel. Like they said below, no doohickies or chickies, just great sailing skill.
Hey Kevin lookout for the Orca pod off of Spain that is attacking boats. Also the boat was looking bow heavy.
Wow, just saw the news reports... they are going after the rudders.
Always inspiring Kevin and Ruth Avery is looking fine. Thanks for letting us stowaway on your adventures!
He seguido, uno tras otro, todos los capítulos de tu aventura atláncica y tienes toda mi admiración y respeto .
Me gusta tu alegría de vivir y tu prestancia de ánimo...
¡Buena proa, marino de aguas azules!
The Scilly Isles are pronounced "silly" not "skilly".
Another great video, Kevin. I'm from southern England and now live in Los Angeles and have sailed all over around where you are. So sailing with you brings back great memories!
Thanks Richard.
All of your videos are awe-inspiring, Kevin! Always great scenes and camera angles. I personally think your videos are best when watched in the "full screen mode." Watching on a larger screen really brings your videos to life. Thanks for another adventure!
The carib is so boring why not the west coast of Africa the horn and into the Indian then ya come to Oz or nor'east into Asia...anyway nice to see Ma Avery doing what she was built for , so many fake it to make it channels going nowhere.
Yes Glenn, the windies is chocker, especially the windward islands from Trinidad to St Vincent. Every man and his dog seems to be anchored there.
If you see Patrick Laine out there, give him a wave! Can't wait to see what's next! Greetings from NYC!
Great video, as usual. Question: Do you have a sleep pattern/system for your longer voyages e.g. time sleeping between alarms?
Yeah, I wonder that too, how to solo sail longer distances, crossing an ocean etc
Once well offshore I sleep a few hours at a time.
That makes way more sense to me then 15 minute naps
@cheap cigs Occasionally. Big ships are required to transmit by law.
Hey Kevin, I can't believe you're missing us out (UK) 😟 I would have loved to buy you dinner and a beer or two in old Blighty. All is forgiven though haha!. Hey just so you know we pronounce The Scilly isles (The Silly isle's) oddly enough 🤔
Classic Kevin. Great stuff. Sorry we couldn't cross paths, but quarantine restrictions made a stop in Ireland difficult. Bonne navigation!
Didn't know until today that you had sailed to Fastnet!
Kevin at about 11 minutes i see you are trailing a line. is that intentional?
Chuck Mooring was wondering the same
Enjoy the warmer weather! We were Ellen/Francis-dodging on our way up the English channel a couple of weeks ago. It's a joy seeing your videos and I will try to emulate you in building some trim tab steering soon! Fair winds!
Very nicely done yet again Capt! The only thing I dislike about your videos is that they end! Fair winds and much respect💪🙏👌
I've watched so many of these video's lately that when I see a sailboat moving without it's sails up it strikes me as bizarre.
Believe it or not, "Scilly" isles is pronounced "silly" as in not serious
Ha! Learned something new.
The weather improved a bit in Ireland in September.
Fair winds, Kevin.
You should've swung by the Scilly isles to take a look see. They're our Caribbean Islands. Maybe next time.
Yes indeed, except without the constant tropical weather ..
How do you get the weather forecasts ?
I used Windy.com when I have cell reception. Offshore I use the InReach.
As usual, great video 😍😍😍
I just had a thought about you and your fine gaff rigged cutter entering Tonga with all those Marconi sails. My guess is you get ever more looks sculling to your anchorage than most would have thought. Maybe next year!
looking good Kevin. sail on, sail on
Thanks for another great episode-watch out for Orcas, they are giving some sailboats a hard time (with serious damage)in your area-wish you all the best
I've heard about that, strange behavior from whales.
@@howtosailoceans1423
Yes it is-a boat that I am in contact with got harassed yesterday -38 steelboat, so no damage, but it really scared them-will be on YT shortly
@@theoldsailmaker6408 Was wondering if those boats were all motoring or have some been sailing only?
@@howtosailoceans1423
The Video of the German boat with the Orcas is now online-Blue Horizon on YT- even if you do not understand what they are saying you can see they are pretty stressed, watch their wheel spinning when the Orcas push the rudder.
@@theoldsailmaker6408 I just watched that. They fell in with a pod of orcas who swam along with them like dolphins. Orcas are dolphins, remember. I feel much relieved if this is the source of the orca "attacks" I heard about--that was not an attack. The orcas did not ram the boat like they would a whale.
You actually look like your having fun. Oh well, wait awhile that will change.
Well done Kevin. Excellent tunes.
Good ham in Bayonne brother.
Beautiful all yours video. I keep waiting for the next one always 😁. Congratulations. Fair winds and smooth sailing. 🌈☀️
Thank you mate, happy to see some sunshine again. 👏👍⚓️
Thanks again Kevin , you are the real no bullshit just sailing!
Unfortunately Erik already took that slogan ...
Can you still be a sailor in today's world if you don't like coffee?
Well anything is possible, but not recommended.
Hi great video as always! Was interested in 12:28 and onward as to your staysail....It looks like you have a reef at the bottom? Was thinking of doing this myself as I have hank on jibs, no roller furling. Would you recommend it vs simply changing headsails as needed? Also would this be a DIY or sailmaker project (I have a grommet making kit so that part I can handle). Do any of your vids show you furling the jib in this way? Thanks!
Yes, I have one deep reef in my staysail, it's much better than carrying another sail, plus it's easier to reef than hank on another jib.
@@howtosailoceans1423 Thanks, I'll be looking to do that this winter when she's on the hard. Fair winds!
Back to shorts and T-shirt! That's almost as big of a change as the color of the water across this one video.
So where is Kevin? He was uploading once a week and now silence. ??
At sea.
What sort of special precautions do you take when at anchor without a motor? My biggest fear would be trouble with ground tackle not holding me in place during a Gail without a lot of room to escape on a reach. Do you keep big distances or just rely on your experience with dropping your hook well and staying on top of proper preventative maintenance?
Yes, try to keep your leeward clear in case you start dragging, but that's not always possible as other boats sometimes drop just behind you. If the weather looks dodgy, set out a second anchor.
Thank you Kevin. You say you came up from a nap. Do you get much sleep in on your passages apart from dodging fishing fleets? I can’t imagine not being awake for at least every half hour of the night sail.
I manage to get enough sleep, so long as the weather is fair and I am not around fishing fleets ..
How to Sail Oceans - my sailing friend and myself are SO impressed on how you go about things on your “Ruth”. That’s what I find so fascinating- the weather, navigating and the sailing plus all the stuff in between! You are an inspiration, Kevin.
that was great, ...thx for sharing your, journey mate, cheers
nice sailing, glad you missed those storms back at ireland.
Great video, Kevin. Good sailing. David
Hello friend, I live in Mazagón South of Spain you can stop here, there is a good anchorage. if you need repairs or supplies do not hesitate to come.

Awesome mate.
Hey, you need some more coffee! 😄
I like all the different camera shots you get of your boat! And the music too
👍!!!
Very good vids and proper sailing thanks
Hi and thanks for another instalment, keep them coming. What AIS settings do you use, CPA TCPA combo, or one and not the other? What distance and time alarm settings? know it will be important for you to not be woken by too many alarms but will have a healthy fear of being rundown.
I always set the CPA at 1nm.
Another great video. Really like the music on this one.
Respect with 24 bells
The old Gal is looking good out there! Keep on keepin on.
Amazing channel with clear, clean sailing. And the video is ONLY 10 days old! So many sailing channels are MONTHS behind in their videos. I guess they get caught up in fancy graphics and "production value". Yet yours is also one of the best channels; one of the simplest - you show sailing, you show life aboard, you show the boat - so you can get your content out in a timely fashion. The only channel I clicked on the bell. Thanks and keep it going!
Thanks mate, thanks for stopping by.
@@howtosailoceans1423 Stopping by??? I'm here every week! Ha Ha I love your content !

It would be cool if you could meet up with Patrick Laine who sails in that area. The two of you would enjoy each other.
Indeed, but I think Patrick is back in France now.
let me know when you enter the Med from Gibraltar, I'm close to Carthagena right now. Maybe we can meet?

Captain, could you touch on the WIndScoops briefly in a future vid? I have six and turn them around to reduce windage, have played with one forward one faced aft to enhance air flow. Not sure really what I am doing but would appreciate some insights from a seasoned salt such as yourself.
Windscoops ... I assume you mean the bronze cowl vents? I mainly turn the two I have to prevent the staysail sheet from fouling them.
@@howtosailoceans1423 correct. Yes, I have ripped from the deck and launched at least 35 yards with a fouled Jib Sheet.
In several shots looks like your trailing a line in the water from the boom? Just there by accident or dragging some laundry (or other poor item) behind?
It's the third reefing line, which has quite a bit of slack when the main is double reefed already.
@@howtosailoceans1423 That line is not going to get wrapped in the prop now is it :)
Why is there a line dragging in the water from the boom behind you in the last scene?
Great vid Kevin. I noticed the line trailing in the water at vid-time 13:20. Seems to be attached to the main sail sheet (at the boom) attachment. I'm interested to know the purpose of this line. Explaination please?
It's the third reefline. There's a lot of slack in it when the main is double reefed.

The t-shirt you're hawking isn't gaff rigged!
Sorry about that ...
@@howtosailoceans1423 I like to watch sailing youtubes as a sort of voyeur and yours is my favorite. I really admire your rugged individualism and your laconicism. If you had a t-shirt similar to the ones you already offer, but are a more accurate representation of your boat, I'd buy.
I think I meant "vicariously," not voyeur. I shouldn't post when I'm sleepy.
Have you ever tried fishing on a passage?
He doesn't fish anymore because he never caught anything anyway and then he lost his pole or something.
Yep, pretty much.

Hi Kevin, I'm an American currently in Falmouth and looking to cross to the Caribbean this year. How are you handling the clearance into Spain? I can't seem to find clear info if I would be allowed in and no one has replied to any emails. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
Hi Justin, all I had to do was fill out an online coronavirus travelers form, it turns out ... I took my passport and papers to the marina here in Baiona per cruising guide recommendation, but turns out I did not have to do that.
