Orca attacks; southbound from Spain

- While helping my neighbor Denis scale his mast I find out that he was one of the boats which had been attacked--or toyed with--by a pod of orca whales located on the northwest corner of Spain. Several yachts had encountered these whales and sustained extensive rudder damage, some had to call for a tow into safe harbor. Denis however worked out a method for dealing with these whales, and sustained no damage.
On Monday, Sept. 28, I weigh anchor and set off for the Canary Islands, some 800 miles away.

This man is in a league of his own; I mean not even the dinghy has an engine. He makes most of the other YT sailors look like charter tourists on mobility scooters. He's totally old school and going full blown hardcore mode.
I take my hat off and bow my head in awe for this man.

@@robinstone564 SLV is the classic example of getting a little to big for you britches and chasing money over everything else. Now they are begging to get in with the "climate change is going to kill us folks" so they can maximize their dollars and even get money for doing nothing. I stopped watching and supporting them once the Greta stunt was pulled and all the fake drama added on the crossing, etc. I will not be part of them or any organization that preys off children. If climate change is real then we wouldn't need a child who refuses to go to school tell us what to do. One of the biggest and most widespread lies of all time. It's amazing what people will believe. crazy!

Amazing conversation you had with the French captain! He did what the Spanish authorities are telling you to do in case you encounter these orcas, although it seems counterintuitive at first it seems to work. I have seen two boats at Sada, Spain, with no rudder as these orcas ripped them off. Fortunately the authorities haven't spotted the orcas for a whole week already so there is no active navigational warning anymore. Btw. it always looks amazing when you do all these anchoring related maneuvers with just sail power. Inspiring!
I think these whales (which are in fact big dolphins) are playing. Like dolphins they like to swim along with the boat, play at the bow, and once the boat stops there's no fun for them anymore. I've seen dolphins try to ride my bow wave in light airs and give up because the boat is moving too slowly. I heard that there was an attack on Oct. 4.
How to Sail Oceans you are right. The problem is that the game they are playing is different from the one dolphins play. Experts say orcas are learning how to hunt big preys like whales. The mother swims under the keel while young orcas bite the rudder, which would be the equivalent to the whale’s caudal fin, once they disable it the prey can’t swim, in our case the sailboat has no steering.

I've only seen orcas twice if I recall, both times in NZ. These whales are behaving very strangely.

How to Sail Oceans orcas are literally everywhere as they are the most geographically diverse species after humans.
There are many different types of orcas like resident pods that mainly eat fish, transients that hunt marine mammals and pelagic that should scare the hell out of anyone.
Like pelagic sharks they don’t mess around.
I wouldn’t worry. They’re curious. We’re the menace. At least the sum of our long history with sea life is not a cooperative one.

There was a pod in the Galapagos that used to attack boats.Tim simmer son had a big daddy swim up when crossing to Nova Scotia the Brendon was a leather Irish curragh, touch and go whether they were lunch.I don’t think the cold north is where Kevin is happiest,in his beautiful ship

If Orca attacks boats it is because fishermen attacked then for surrounding their nets.
I have sailed with killer wales in the NW USA but, but never had a pod bump at the hull. I learned something today, heave too and go easy for a time.
Why on the entire Earth does anyone go out in those deep, dark turbulent waters? Looks soooo scary n entirely dangerous, I'll pass, watching from home in California, great video though🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Re. the orcas attacking the mans yacht, the latest episode from Halcyon Yachts delivery shows the same pod playing with the rudders of a Lagoon 450, quite scary.
There has been a rollout of a new frequency communications gadget which is beamed down from space and from many masts o the devices . This frequency may not be felt by most but for myself and many other living beings are suffering tremendous stress when hit by these frequencies. I now have to sleep and often retreat into a Faraday net now for brief relief . Water absorbes these frequencies so I can only imagine the changes in our seas as a consequence. I wounder if a boat with no such devices would be attacked yet cannot ask the question freely without being censored.
Man I'm siding with the orcas on this one, I just had to get Auto insurance! I got a ticket! The orcas don't want our government and they're afraid of humans because of our stinking governments have gave us a bad reputation! ):

These orca attacks were completely unheard of until a few months ago. I can't see how they can be understood as anything but almost cries for help. Their habitat and food chain arr so destroyed that they're attacking anything that might look like a competitor., like starving people fighting over a cache of food

I got sunk by Orcas in the Tasman sea 1968 in a 36 ft. schooner (The Red Macgregor) yep that was her name , Named after a square rigger , 200 miles NE of the 3 kings heading to Australia from NZ , Of course it was in 40+ knots & 4 in the Morning - Fair winds .

I was wondering if you saw any orcas. I heard about them hitting a boats and specifically the rudder. We see them all the time in Prince William Sound in AK. They are a huge animal. A big male swam by us and the dorsal fin was 6 feet high. They ignored us and swam right by. They sure are an impressive animal.
Not on this trip. Saw orcas years ago off NZ, outside of Auckland.

Didn't work for Halcyon Tours who were advised to do the same thing by the spanish coastguard apparently. The orcas continued to hit the rudder, to the point they feared it would break.
They were under motor when "attacked". But they never heaved to, they kept on under sail and the young orcas kept up their game for nearly two hours.

Why are you going south to the Canaries so early in the season? It is recommended to leave the Canaries towards the west not before the end of November... Cheers, Richard
The bad weather is moving in up north, much nicer down here. I plan to leave early November, pilot charts show persistent easterly winds all the way across, and generally hurricanes are done by then.

I heard of an orca attack last sunday 4th of october between Finistere and Porto. Boat asked assistance from spanish coastguard, arrived safe in port. You must be at the Canaries right now. Enjoy it there.
This has happened to several boats. Scientists have no idea why the whales are doing this. Yes, here in Lanzarote.

Ahoy Kevin! I'm wondering, to your knowledge : Were the boats attacked by orcas using rudders other than full keel/stern hung rudders?
Do not know. Denis' is a spade rudder. The orcas definitely seem to know that the rudder controls the boat, and they see the boat reacting when they hit it--when the boat is moving, that is.
@@howtosailoceans1423 Interesting. I've seen footage of orcas coming out of the water and "body slamming" sailboats, which is nuts. I have a hunch they go after exposed rudders, such as a spade. All the more reason to have a full keel and stern rudder. Perhaps more details will come out. It's getting colder in the NE, enjoy the Canary Islands Kevin!

Yes, very big dolphins, and they seem to have individual personalities. This particular pod has everyone scratching their heads, very unusual.

I'm happy to know you've made it safely to the Canaries, Kevin. BTW - I've always been a big fan of Colon Archer designs. I studied much of Colin Archer's work way back when - as a young naval architect. While living on Cape Cod years ago (before I met the young lady whom is now my wife), I had designed a 46' double-ended cutter for myself which displayed a heavy Colon Archer influence in it's design. I had planned to build the boat, sell my home and live aboard the new vessel. Then I met my wife. My wife (as it turned out) is a "landlubber." Needless to say, the boat was never built. I did sell my home on Cape Cod, but I'm still living ashore here in Downeast Maine. My sea adventures these days amount to vicariously living through your videos that I'm so thankful for. Not to be misunderstood: I'm the CAPTAIN around here (but.......well......uhh........my wife is THE ADMIRAL)!!! 😁

I used to see orcas often out in the Aleutians, they never caused problems unless a boat messed with them first, after that they would raid their catch regularly.
This behavior is unprecedented, according to the biologists.

When you enter a foreign port you fly the yellow Q flag off your starboard spreader. Once you have cleared customs and immigration, you replace it with a courtesy flag of the country you are visiting.

I read somewhere that they now think the orcas attacked because two of the young ones in the pod are injured.
Perhaps, but my sense is that these orcas are playing. Note that Denis says that he not only stopped the boat, but let the rudder swing free--once the whales felt no resistance, they lost interest. It just reminds me of our family dog with her pull toy, once you stopped trying to pull it away from her, she got bored.

Aye m8, trying to find more info about Ruth Avery but hard to find. Is she kind of a relative to Collin Archers? You mentioned something like that, but I can’t remember you’ve told anything like it before so I started to search more info about her. I’ve found Southern Cross have quite some similarities with C A’s and just some weeks ago I was scrutinizing an Collin Archer 38 at a dock in Norway (they are kind of popular there). I reckon I’ll have to wait until we share the same anchorage to have a closer look on R A.

Kevins' is a Gillmer 31........same as the SC31....(just built in a different location/builder?????).

The Gilmer 31 is the southern cross w/out the inboard. At least thats what I remember from an early Kevin vid.
Quite so - Gillmer 31 is a Southern Cross without engine. And I have found "The design takes influence from shapes dating back to Colin Archer's work", when digging deeper into the subject of designer Thomas C. Gillmer.

Hi MiQ, well I use Colin Archer to describe a double-ended, long-keeled, fairly heavy displacement hull form which supposedly came from Scandinavian pilot and rescue boats. In the yachting world, William Adkin was perhaps the most famous for his Colin Archer insipired designs, including Eric, on which the Westsail 32 is based, and Ingrid, on which the Allejuela 38 is based.

MADRID (AP) - SPAIN HAS prohibited yachting across 100 kilometers (62 miles) of its northwestern coast after a number of sailboats have been damaged by orca whales knocking their hulls.
Spain’s transport ministry issued the week-long prohibition for the vessels under 15 meters (49 feet) long starting on Tuesday night. It said the area covered by the ban could be extended to “follow the migration routes” of the whales.
Such good technique, your respect for that lee shore speaks volumes. Would love to sit and chat over a beer, but settled for buying you one over the internet and will raise a glass tonight to a safe passage home. Cheers

Hey Kevin yeah there was another report on October 5th from a delivery skipper off of Porto Portugal that there catamaran had been attacked by a pod of Orcas while under motor, the coastguard instructed them to turn off the engine and he also said they were hitting the rudders. His tactic was to head inshore near fishing boats and extra traffic to distract them
Did they stop attacking once the boat had stopped? Interestingly they do not attack fishing boats, probably because fishing boats are stationary a lot of the time.
@@howtosailoceans1423 Hi Kevin it appears he switched off his engine and started sailing attacks continued for 2 hrs with them hitting rudders spinning the wheel violently , he said as this is new behaviour the most frightening thing was not knowing what damage they could do to the yacht!! Fair winds bud.
@@andybrands1883 So he did not stop the boat then. Denis said once that he stopped the boat and just drifted, the orcas hit a couple of times and then swam away without causing any damage.

Yeah, unfortunately, the Lagoon 450 didn't heave to and kept under sail after turning off their engine.
The young orcas kept up their "game" for nearly two hours. IMO, that seems a bit too long to be just playful, and more likely coordinated attack.
If you watch and listen to the video of the Lagoon 450, the strikes were quite hard, and the same three orcas from the pod that they had identified from the other attacks were taking turns at the rudder and hull, much like their tactics to wear out and eventually disable baleen whales.
I'm curious how this cat might look from below?... a mother whale and calf, or a pair?
AFAIK, all of the attacks have been on sailing vessels, and on those between 5m-15m, as well as being under way at 5-9 knots, so?
I also don't believe that during all of these reported attacks there was any larger matriarch among them as is usual at their age in order to teach them hunting skills. So they may have lost their elder(s) and the youngins' were just "winging it".
This pod might be desperate, especially with no matriarch, and as this area has been severely over-fished, so every potential hunt must be at least be attempted.

Attacked? Or were the boats just in the way, sailing the same direction, and got bumped and jostled as the pod passed?
Oh I don't think any of these yachts were whale watching, from what I've heard the whales came after them. Some boats needed to be towed into port by the Coast Guard, their rudders no longer operational.
@@howtosailoceans1423 I saw a picture somewhere of one of the damaged rudders. It had a sort of Jaws type bite out of it. It was made from fibreglass with a foam filling and they said the repair would be no problem. Scary stuff though.
@@howtosailoceans1423 The Essex, a Massachusetts whaler was sunk by a Sperm whale in 1820... the event inspired the novel Moby Dick. PBS made an excellent documentary called Into The Deep that covers it well. I've never heard of Orcas behaving this way.
About 5 years ago a local sailor had a close encounter with a large Orca, in Trinity Bay.
It came alongside for a few minutes, and actually got his huge dorsal fin tangled up in the boats cap shroud... and broke the shroud.
No other damage though thankfully.

How to Sail Oceans I think, hope, it will be a lot easier. Sunshine and trade winds on a broad reach and plenty of fishing. Sargasso weed is a nuisance and squalls are an issue the further West you get. You don’t seem to carry a light airs downwind sail which could slow you down. Constant rolling can be wearying. Best of luck.
