I totally agree that the slapping of the open hand conditions the back of the opposite hand! The application of the smash (and the leg movement) is an arm grab/break. The left hand, when grabbed, opens up and first faces the palm up to torque the aggressor's arm. It then rotates back down with the palm facing the floor also pulling the aggressor closer in which exposes the back of the arm. The right hand smashes the arm and the foot slam provides more power from the hip. Brutal stuff :)!

like music my friend, the basis seems useless for the beginner until when this one finds out it's part of him/her.It is a common thing to the mind and the body already as it's to drive you car("become water ma frand-by B.Lee)".From then, you will be able to make extraordinary things you would not whether you'd skipped the basis. Then when an opportunity comes and you are good enough to kick someone's ass you find out you do not want to do so because you know it's not what it's meant for.Nice class!

Most of them have you videotape yourself, or meet online for video chat. some insist on occasional seminars, phone calls. etc. and pretty much all of the most legit ones insist you test for black belt (or equivalent) in person. It's better than nothing. knowledge is knowledge.

FlyHiGhness is exactly right, the knee should be elevated. The "resting" part of the stance derives from you sitting/resting on your back heel. In other words, your butt will sit on the heel of the foot that's behind you.

Correct me if I'm wrong, deep "traditional" stances can also have practical application. But at clinching/ wrestling range and not at long range like most modern practiconers of eastern martial arts try to apply them

Buk Mai or Pai Mei (White Eyebrow) was with the Wu Tang branch of the martial arts which supported the Manchu dynasty. The Shaolin monks were with the overthrown Ming dynasty....so basically they were the rebels.
Buk Mai only penetrated into the Shaolin temple by learning the secret footwork to by-pass their hidden traps. He then opened the gates for the Manchu's army.
Shaolin fought for the Chinese, Wu Tang sided with the current govt'....who's the heros? Only history can decide.
