Always Meet Your Heroes with Nathaniel Murphy

  • This episode starts off with Zach and Rhett catching each other up on their 4th of July festivities. Rhett’s was classic: he treated some visiting European friends to fireworks off a dock, barbecue, smoked wings, more fireworks, and a bunch of beer. Zach, meanwhile, was knocking on doors to tell neighbors to knock off the mortar shelling in the middle of the night. To each their own.
Then they’re joined by Nathaniel Murphy, the Chicago-based guitarist who has racked up nearly 400,000 followers on Instagram with jaw-dropping videos of solo guitar work. Rhett doesn’t mince words-he says Murphy is “one of the best players out there.” Murphy’s videos break people’s brains, they say: no one can work out how he’s playing all the parts by himself at the same time. Plus, Murphy works full-time now with Chicago Music Exchange, where he brushed shoulders with Noel Gallagher and Carlos Santana within a few days of one another this summer.
Murphy shares how he came to the U.S. to coach soccer for nearly a decade before being hired to do video demos for CME. He was busking downtown Chicago, too, and within a few years, CME brought him on full-time to cut videos. When it came time to join Instagram, he registered with his infamous handle, @ZeppelinBarnatra. Murphy breaks down how the moniker came to be when he entered a contest to win tickets to Led Zeppelin’s 2007 reunion concert.
Murphy names his favorite all-time guitar-Noel Gallagher’s Gibson J-150, which Gallagher recently signed for him-before the crew reflects on how to behave when meeting your guitar heroes. That leads to a discussion of U2’s The Edge, whom Rhett and Murphy defend from detractors. They also agree that Teles are the most versatile guitars out there, but Zach, ever the contrarian, dissents: “To me, there’s a reason why all the dudes that played Teles back in the day switched to Les Pauls,” he shrugs. Murphy talks about his current favorite players, like Justin Derrico, Stephen Taranto, and Michael Romeo, then the trio dissect different picking techniques and go long on Blue Chip pick manufacturing processes.
Rhett, who groans that he has the touch of a blacksmith when it comes to guitar playing, praises Murphy’s sensitive playing. But even Murphy, with his prodigious playing, says he gets overwhelmed watching other players’ styles. In guitar playing, as in life, the grass is always greener.

This man seems to epitomize 'happiness is contentment'.
He is undoubtedly an insanely talented guitarist and yet is wise enough to settle for the contentment of splitting his time between being a soccer coach and working in a guitar shop, helping other guitarists.
He may have other ambitions, but he seems supremely content and humble at the moment.

Why I think the Edge is a great guitar player. He is not formerly trained/skilled in classical guitar or jazz guitar, largely self-taught, instead of trying to be a fretboard gymnast, he worked from what he could do, instead of emulating other people, he tries to be himself whatever that is with his instrument, he works on his techniques and strips guitar playing down to basic building blocks of guitar music rhythm, chords, notes, tone, texture, expression of emotion, tension, release on and on. he started with a gibson explorer, vox amps, memory man delays and created his own sound unique to him that no one else was really doing. with those tools he has been able to create a lot of great music with 3 other dudes he met in high school. The amazing thing is he is still creating new music with those same 3 dudes he met in high school

I used to live in the same warehouse loft apartment building in Downtown Minneapolis with, Jason Myrold, who is the artist that painted that Zvex pedal of yours Zach! Super cool, talented artist. He sold me his personal Fuzz Factory ( vintage 1997) that was also hand painted by him, which was my introduction into the world of Fuzz.... and quite the pedal to pop your Fuzz Cherry with.
Great episode guys, loved every second of it!!!

Being honest, I’m not a U2 fan. However, what The Edge has accomplished is pretty wild. The most unique thing about him is the fact that he plays the pedals as much as he does the guitar. His timing and inclination of what the song needs is remarkable.
Great video fellas! Keep it up!

The first 4th of July we lived in this house, it hadn’t rained for days so I got my 6k foot hose and soaked my roof like a paranoid freak because there were so many fireworks going off for so long.
Also, I’m not familiar with this here fellow but I like him. I’m definitely going to check him out after I finish this here interview. I’m really enjoying what you guys are doing with Dipped.

I would probably lacquer that whole GUITAR if I was Nathaniel. Noel not only signed it...he PLAYED it.
I've been to CME many times. For me its second only to my local shop as being the greatest guitar shop EVER. But I keep missing the times these big stars come in. Noel, Santanna, Tom Petty.... I suppose I should start watching the touring schedules to see when people come to Chicago!
I do agree though! Nathaniel is one hell of a guitar player! Its so nice to see him get his due outside of the CME demos! Thanks guys!!

I had a Bigsby on my '71 SG and now I've got one on my Reverend Gristle 90. Put the string on, pull tight, and clamp a capo at the 12th fret. Then you can thread the string thru the machine head and tighten.

Great show, especially as it was quite clear that despite some serious "steering" Nathaniel has absolutely no real interest in 'gear' in the classic sense at all - he just plays whatever. very refreshing.

I've recently noticed that when I jog, I have better rhythm and stride of my arms are ender control. The key to arm control starts with the pinky fingers held close (lightly)to the hand. Then, align the wrist, forearm , upper arm, shoulder , shoulder blade, upper back down to the hips and through the legs to foot contact. Integration of motion is the key. Picking motion is the same and best improves while standing. Standing allows for better independent balance and feel of the music while playing - especially music requiring greater concentration. then select the pickup material, shape and size which which distracts less from all the above.

I use a capo when changing strings with a bigsby. I’m sure I’m not the only one that figured that out. Haha.
But yeah. Bend the string and pull it tight and put a capo around the 12th fret. It’ll hold the string tight while you put it through the tuning peg.

    • @Subropontes
      @Subropontes 10 місяців тому

Or use pliers (or even your fingers) to bend the ball end side, the strings hook on the pin and stay there no matter what you do. It takes the same amount of time as stringing a non Bigsby guitar!

If whatever you're doing with any instrument works within the context of the creative association you're committed - you have "arrived" as what is needed for those players. That is the only criteria to support the label of "great". If this happens more than once and with different people you are "Eric Clapton" great or "John Wetton" "great". Support of "the song", "the group", and/or "the arrangement" is the goal whether the listener base broadens or not.

It was a king time ago and probably just a harmless quip but EVH kind of mocked the Edge by responding to a question posed about the Edge. Edward said “he really loves his delay.” That was a dig and not really consistent with who Edward really was.
From then on, that was the common criticism of his playing. Edward and the Edge are both hero’s of mine and it didn’t color my opinion but I was kind of crushed.

Bashing on the Edge (or, Keith Richards) for their technical prowess is absolutely stupid.
It doesn’t matter, because their job was to write memorable parts for hit songs…which they did!
Rating, or competition is meaningless with music.
