for people like me who are having trouble with the first lick, i've found that it's slightly easier to play if you cross your right leg over your left and rest your guitar on that, because then it changes the angle slightly so your pinky won't commit suicide
For the beginning player, I'd suggest working this one part at a time, for about 5-10 minutes, then switching parts. Go REALLY slowly. Do all parts twice a day like that, and in just a few days you'll have it. The speed will come as your accuracy develops. Practice slow and clean, above all else. Take breaks between sections, as this one will be uncomfortable at first. Remember: Consistency builds accuracy, accuracy builds fluency.
Honestly, for a beginning player, close this video and go learn about a hundred other songs first lol If your goal is to quit guitar, then keep watching.
Cool lesson. The only thing I'd like to see extra (and this is for most online teachers in general actually) is to reinforce learning the song with some theory. So, what key the song is in, what chords are being played, note intervals etc. I appreciate that many people literally just want to learn the song and not understand what they are playing, but I believe it helps you better remember what you're learning if you have some understanding of how the song works harmonically.
Russell Dobre true I haven’t thought of that before, but if beginners knew how helpful the guitar theory would be later down the line, they would appreciate it more
Props for your attention to detail. I studied this lick from the live version from their Dave Letterman appearance, and this is exactly how he plays it. It's simple enough, but has a degree of difficulty as many have stated. Anyway, good job.
The pick directions are actually wrong in this video, Dave plays the first note of every sequence as an up pick, and the open E is actually a down pick
for me it is impossible to play the intro of this song, the fingers position is very uncomfortable, the little finger doesn't let you play it. Maybe I would be able to play if I had a larger space between my fingers, congratulations for the people who can play it because it is very very difficult
This is a very hard song for someone who hasn't been playing for years as the strength is simply not good enough to hold down the notes. Practice every day for another year (bar chords will help you tonnes) then come back to this and you''ll be able to do it!
Start with a metronome really really slowly (literally 50bpm or so) to begin with and make sure every note is clean. Gradually move up in tempo and your pinky will do as you tell it to lol
Magnus Lennon yes!!! Listen to this, almost exactly a year ago I couldn't even get past the intro as my fingers where starting burn and my pinkie finger was useless. I kinda gave up but over this year I was practicing other songs, cords, And overall strength in fingers and after all the calluses and year of "training" this song is now very easy and it will be rewarding when you get it down cause I know you will
To beginners, or even intermediate players (like myself) having issues with getting the tone right, because of your little finger or others fingers being in the way, here’s a tip I found out. I’m a Hendrix/Frusciante “thumb over the neck” type of player and put my thumb over the neck even when playing the intro to this song. I quickly realized the intro was better and more easy to play when you put your thumb more behind of the neck instead of letting it sit on top. It really helps and doesn’t make the other fingers be in the way of each other. Hope some of you understand what I’m trying to say and I hope it helps.
Absolutely. I am new to guitar and watching a tutorial like this is mind blowing. It's crazy to watch and to try and learn but to think someone sat there and invented it, to me is just absolutely crazy, and I'm just genuinely in awe
Thanks man- I love this song, and the guitar part is absolute magic. (It's a little like Sweet Child O' Mine meets Top Jimmy at the Cirque du Soleil.) .......OK, maybe not. I didn't realize how nuts the entire guitar part is until I just watched your video though. Great job explaining the tune- I definitely have a deeper respect for this song and the band as a result.
The only hack I’ve been able to come up with during the intro and verse part is momentarily lifting my pinky on the way down after you pick the D note and bringing your pinky back down just in time to fret the D note on the way up. The only rub is doing this will add more articulation to the arpeggio and the notes won’t ring out as much. However, a little delay will fix this.
Much easier to play if you tune the g to a g#. Intro is then played with third finger on b 17th fret and pinky on g 18th fret. Just need to make sure the rest of the notes are played a step down on the g string. If you're like me and have to play this live, while standing / moving around, this is how I found it best to play it! Just a suggestion.
What is this mans guitar tuned to *edit: OH THEY HAD TO DO IT A HALF STEP DOWN I THOUGHT I WAS TRIPPIN BALLS MAN I TUNED MY GUITAR WITH 3 DIFFERENT TUNERS
Love Carl and everything he does, great teacher and guitarist! On this one, what would be the disadvantage of tuning down the low E and B a half-step further to achieve a more natural handshape?
Hi Carl, just a small note about the breakdown..does he not play the 16th fret on the up, down up down part? So on the G and D strings. 11,12,11,12.. 12,12,14,12.. 16,12,14,12,12,12.. 11,12,11,12,11,12.. 12,12,11,12.. 9,7,7,7,6,7,7,7
Thanks man great lessons, Im a beginner so while doing full easier songs, I do the main riff to this part time and im starting to get it, its also good for training your fingers and picking for other songs, this is definitely the best lessons channel
I have no idea how this has 700k views. 699k of these must be people just watching for fun, because there's no way 700,000 people can play this on guitar.
Thanks Carl.....GREAT lesson...my fingers don't thank you! I am not hearing it.....which part of the song starts with the D arpeggio at the 10:00 point of your lesson? Are those essentially the same chords as the chorus just in a different position? Thanks again!
I just started teaching myself guitar and I don't understand how your hand can physically play this song.. How do you have your middle finger and ring finger on the same fret?
You gotta angle it perfect, sometimes it takes a second for me to put it in the exact position. I couldn't imagine trying to learn this as a beginner tho
Hey Carl, you are very awesome and your videos are amazing and they help me very much. I would love it if you did Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd. It's a classic and I would love to learn how to play it.
I wanted to learn this song because apparently it’s very hard and tricky, well it’s been five minutes and I’m proud to say that I can easily play the intro
This would be a good song to play on the top neck of a triple neck! LOL I have seen him play it on a 335 with a short strap and neck angled high. Now I know why!
yea i got that first part down but im having trouble with the picking pattern and keeping my pinky strong enough to press the fret and actually have it sound good, all in all it is pretty easy plus i have a while to learn it and master it
Several lead guitarists in The Killers seem to have played this in different ways. In 2019 the guitarist did not play it like that live. He accomplished pretty much the same with normal tuning (optionally drop D), a capo on the 4th, playing the high 4 strings for the intro. In tab: x-x-11-10-0-9, hammering 11 on high E string. Then something like x-x-10-10-0-9 and third chord x-x-0-10-0-9. Which is much easier to play. It also makes it easier to play the pre chorus and chorus with just variations on open chords. See ua-cam.com/video/QVlfINuDdKE/v-deo.html
So my band is playing this song and while I am a novice lead guitarist, this song is very very hard for me. I’m 5’2 and have tiny hands and making that chord shape is not possible if I want the high e string to ring out. My pinky finger is too short to reach the 19th fret without touching the high e and it’s just frustrating. I tried playing the song around the 12th fret for more ‘comfort’ but I run into other issues. Is there any way I can improve?
Hi Carl, you should do "i" by Kendrick Lamar at some point. There's some really awesome riffs. Mr. Brightside, or guitar intonation test. I challenge you to play this standing up
+MusicDude86 I found that ok actually, but the very first part seems to be very hard for me. especially with the ring and pinky finger strength as I first picked up a guitar 3 months ago
You could play this in standard tuning, however, you would have to play on different frets. Also, it won't sound just like the original since that was played in E-flat.
1:20 - Lesson start, intro/verse
5:18 - Pre-chorus
8:00 - Chorus (simple part)
9:24 - Chorus (not so simple part)
11:48 - Breakdown
13:25 - Ending chords
Thank you so much

I agree, when I learnt this as a beginner, I didn't realise this was in the key of C# major or any of the chords being played actually
