You've just discovered one of my all time favorite, modern bands. "Lyfjaberg" means "Healing Mountain". There's mention of the the "Nine Maidens" of the mountain. I believe the female singer (Lindy Fay Hella) is playing the part of one of the maidens. (Possibly Eir...from the Prose Edda?) On of their other songs "Helvegen" was used in snippets, in certain scenes of "Vikings". I HIGHLY recommend doing a reaction video to the "live" version of Helvegen with another Norwegian singer named Aurora (amazing performer in her own right). This is the version with the red backdrop for the stage.
Their songs have the Norse runes and they have used old stories from Völuspá for example and old norse stories and myths. Also Einar is a Pagan animist basically loves and "worships" nature and all its aspects. In their music they do use old Norse and Scandinavian instruments like tagharpa and such. This particular video was shot in April or May (can't remember exactly) in an Island in the west of Norway and they got stuck there (they and the crew) for about 3-4 days when a cold blast hit the area out of the blue and brought extremely low tempts and snow (that's why the video has different tones with the snow and normal grounds). Also yes they have participated in the Vikings music soundtracks along with Heilung and Danheim. They were brought in by the composer Trevor Morris (also check out the live Viking suite which is mind blowing) and Einar also had a cameo where he sung at the docs.
Einar, the lead singer in Wardruna actually was the drummer in (in)famous Norwegian Black Metal band Gorgoroth for a couple of years, he is also the main singer and worked closely with Trevor Morrris (composer) on the music developed for the tv series : Vikings. Wardruna is a Norwegian band 🇳🇴 The female singer, Maria Franz, of Heilung is also Norwegian 🇳🇴 This song is written in nynorsk. One of the two official written languages of Norway. It's sung in a west-norwegian dialect, close to the dialect Einar normally speak. Nynorsk is a reconstructed language made up by all the different dialects in Norway. We wanted to take back our own language after hundreds of years in union with Denmark. We thus ended up with two different official written standards, bokmål (close to Danish) and nynorsk, basically meaning new-norwegian - although it sound closer to old norse and old norwegian 😅 To add to the confusion : Norwegians don't speak nynorsk or bokmål - those languages only exist in written form. We speak different dialects. No one can say how many dialects we actually have. But they are all considered equal. We take much pride in our different dialects, it's part of our identities. In many languages people would maybe switch to some kind of standard or official dialect in formal settings, like when addressing the king or speaking to the prime minister. A norwegian would never do that, nor be expected to do so.
That's really great information! I have a deep respect and interest in language. I apologize for misrepresenting them. I'm not sure how, but I massively screwed up when I put together where each band was from.
Wardruna and Heilung are my favorite norweigan bands that arent heavy metal (traditionally, anyway). Eilenar from Wardruna worked on the music for the Tv show Vikings and appeared in several key scenes basically as himself singing on the show itself.
Wardruna being "well researched" would be an understatement. Their version of the Voluspá poem (from the poetic Edda) is fantastic. Ps. Yes, they/him(Einar Selvik) worked on Vikings, and AC Valhalla.
Some beautiful shots from the North-west of Norway there. The instrument entering the song in the latter part is a "tagelharpe". He also uses bone flutes and stuff like that drum Finally, yes they did the Vikings theme! There's a video of him doing it live with an orchestra even. Great stuff. Edit: Says Wardruna is Swedish in the video description. Heresy, just saying ;)
@@HistoryBuff The theme song is by Fever Ray. But Einar and Wardruna makes up a big part of the Vikings soundtrack. To see the orchestra performance search Einar Selvik Viking Suite, it’s a must see/hear. He’s performing the song Voluspà which is based on a norwegian poem from the 900s.
I’m sure others have mentioned but Wardruna was featured in the show Vikings and Einar Selvik himself (the singer and founder of the group) appears before a pivotal moment in the show, once before Athelstan’s death and once when they were leaving for Paris. Einar Selvik also collaborated with Trevor Morris (the composer on Vikings). Einar Selvik was also one of the main composers for the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla soundtrack.
Oh boy, you're in for a treat with these guys. Others have already recommended them but you absolutely need to see especially their performances of 'Helvegen' (which was featured on 'Vikings' at least twice) and 'Völuspá' (the one with just Einar and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra strings + choir is absolutely incredible).
I'm a history buff myself, so I'm sure you will appreciate this. I know this comment is late, so it was probably already answered for you. To start, the opening scene from Vikings is called "If I Had A Heart" by Fever Ray (all female vocals, if you can believe it). Fever Ray is one of those bands where their music is mainly created for movies and series. However, Wardruna DID provide a ton of their songs for the Vikings series. About 70% of the music you hear on there is actually Wardruna. Remember the blood eagle scene? That song was Wardruna's "Heimpta Thurs." Their lead singer, Einar Selvik has actually made cameo appearances on the series, as the village bard. When Ragnar and them were on the docks (I think they were getting ready to sail off) you see Einar walking towards them, playing that very same drum (from this video) and singing, to see them off. Aside from that, trying to guess some of the instruments is almost pointless, unless you're familiar with ancient Norse instruments. They use deer hide drums, goat horns, lur, mouth harp, moraharpa, bone rattle, nature sounds (thunder, running water, sticks against trees), etc. They make all their own instruments and will NOT use anything that didn't exist back then... they are that serious about their music.
The Old Norse word Lyfjaberg means ‘Healing-mountain’ and is known from Norse mythology as a place of comfort and cure for the sick and sore who manage to climb the mountain.“The song expresses that climbing a tough mountain, both in reality and metaphorically, is a mental as well as a physical effort. I have tried to write this journey up the mountain as one for the mind and spirit as much as the feet and body. Anything of true value, comes at a true cost,” says Einar Selvik. Climb the mountain it's worth it!...... The video for Lyfjaberg produced by Ragnarok Film .The mountains at Tustna and the spectacular Trollkirka caves in Norway serve as a beautiful backdrop.
This was filmed on the island of Tustna (North West coast of Norway) if anyone didn’t know yet. Also, Einar Selvik (main singer) also did the music for Vikings and even appeared in the episode where they set sail to Paris, the guy on the docks singing them off, that was him live. 99% of what you hear in Wardruna and Einar’s songs is Old Norse, basically the dead language of the Vikings, sounds more similar to today’s language of Iceland and Faroes. Einar and I believe every member of Wardruna is actually Norwegian. Einar was actually the drummer of a metal band which is insane looking at what he does now.
Lyfjaberg is about the journey to overcome physical or emotional trauma. It's descended from the Ättestupa, the prehistoric norse practice of those who could no longer support themselves sacrificing their lives to ease the burden on their family, seeing as survival in such a harsh place was difficult. You don't want to be a burden on your family or feel like a leech, so you'd go on this ritualistic journey to the top of a mountain or precipice. You'd either return healed (there are genuine scientific health benefits to exposing yourself to freezing temperatures it turns out, so long as you don't get frostbite, hence Cryotherapy), die on the journey and therefore not be a burden to your family (seen as an incredibly honorable sacrifice), or you'd make it back and still have your disease/injury, but you'd feel so good about surviving the journey that your ailment doesn't seem like a big deal since you just climbed a mountain naked! You can do anything!
I enjoy these match ups, tho, if wardruna has a chance to stand up to sabaton there are a few songs that could stand up to modern rock, … Fehu , Solringen, Rotlarst tre fell, or White raven…. Because I know that the slower songs they do won’t compete
This isn't old norse or old norwegian. It's sung in modern norwegian. He sings in a west-norwegian dialect close to his own. The lyrics are written in nynorsk, one of the two official written standards of Norwegian 🇳🇴
I randomly found your channel via this reaction video (yay, algorithm), maybe because I've been listening to a lot of Wardruna lately, lol, and I really enjoy your take on this music video. They're phenomenal. There's something about their music that transports you back to what might have been the way that those people lived in such ancient times. It could be the instruments they used or the whole vibe of the video, or something of that nature, I'm not sure. However, the English translation of the lyrics, which may or may not be to the point, is terrific too. I didn't expect that something with a very prominent pagan foundation be so centered around an individual. Achieving healing (mental or you can even call it spiritual) through feeling content comes after a very long journey during which you don't really need all of the things you thought were mandatory. For example, clothes - I feel like this could represent the way we present ourselves to others and have that extra layer of security to shield us from the outside world (physically and emotionally). Then he mentions discarding fears, thoughts, and masks, which is self-explanatory, as it segways into the overall idea, or rather question of existentialism. That's at least how I interpreted it. But, to quote you, "that's some deep shit." Lol. I'm an atheist, so the topic of existentialism isn't necessarily something that I ever thought about, but the way it was presented here is truly majestic. The "healing mountain" could be inspired by some epic saga, but I think that it just references actual healing that comes as a reward from doing a tough climb, so to speak. For me, the most significant part of the song is when a listener finally achieves his arduous climb (which, if you check the lyrics out, you'll see easier as you're making it more difficult for yourself by removing all sorts of safety blankets) just to meet Shadow Ladies, which I assume are somehow related to Skadi? That's an interesting choice, given that she's not a typical Norse god (although she is seen as such) because she's actually a Giant. Given that you're a historian, I'm pretty confident that you know better than me what kind of relationships did Norse gods have with the giants. That being said, maybe someone more familiar can tell me if Giants were familiar with runes at all? At that point, the listener is being imbued with various powers that come from runes and then gets sucked into the void where he's essentially all alone but happy and content. I can go on and on because of how beautiful the message is, so to avoid that, I'll just stop here, lol. Only one band has made me hop on these tangent trains, but for a *very* different reason, lol. So if and when you have time, take a look at "SKYND - Jim Jones." or any other, really. :D They sing about obviously diametrically different topics but also employ superb visual storytelling - if you don't actually mind looking at it. Leon

Oh lord have mercy, PLEEEEASE react to more Scandinavian/Germanic folk music! So many react channels do one or two videos and completely forget about it. PLEASE DIVE INTO THIS RABBIT HOLE HEAVEN!
@@HistoryBuff Well unlike most artists, the vast majority of Wardrunas songs are masterpieces, including the album songs. If you’re interested in more from the genre itself I HIGHLY recommend Forndom and Tenhi. Both are less popular but equally cherished. I also have my own personal playlist I’ve been adding songs to since I discovered this amazing music in 2012. It’s mostly Norse/Germanic but it’s got other stuff too, all folk though and all fulfill the feeling of primal connection to nature, our ancestors, and ourselves. Alternatively if you don’t trust the link, it’s on my profile called “Viking/Norse Music” Here is the link: ua-cam.com/play/PL21f_D8rjDf-mRA7bhLqqGZarJhAdoPLr.html There’s quite a lot I know but most of them are quite good, added mostly one by one as I discovered them, so most should be of good quality, all will be of at least decent quality guaranteed. If you want to ease into it, perhaps go from the oldest added to mimic my journey of discovery or since there’s so many perhaps choosing randomly wouldn’t be bad either. If you react to any more Heilung PLEASE begin with Traust first then perhaps Kreigsgaldr then Alfidhirharty(probably wrong spelling) and afterwards Hamrer Hipye? They’re the most unique that I know of and they’re an acquired taste, the quality might get wasted if you listen to the rougher stuff first, you’ll not understand them as intimately thus diluting the enjoyment. Lastly if you’d be willing to, a random person made a cinematic (fan film?) of Lyfjaberg using footage from the Witcher 3 videogame. You probably don’t need to know much about the story of the game but if you do, I think you’ll thoroughly enjoy it. In my opinion, their edit(of footage only) is a masterpiece. Here is the link to that: ua-cam.com/video/aCU_IEkUbjw/v-deo.html
Wow! That Playlist is VERY impressive! If you dont mind, rather than reacting, I will start listening to these. I still will cover more wardruna and I see the Hu on there too which I will also cover very soon.
I forgot to mention... I noticed you mentioned Heilung a lot. It's actually pronounced High-lewng, or high-loong, whichever is easiest to read. Basically, think of the loon bird, then just add an 'ng' at the end.
Sorry for barging into the comments here, but I just discovered another history-themed metal band that I felt I had to share. :) Band in question is "Judicator", and from what I can tell, themes are ancient/medieval history. So many people are one artist people and they spam the hell out of other videos to get me to check out the one band or artist they refuse to stray from. Nothing makes me happier than when someone thanks me for introducing them to their new favorite band!
So the point of Wardrunas music is not to recreate norse viking music or that feeling, but rather taking old elements and create something new with it :)
I might be off base here, correct me if I'm wrong. While the instruments here seem to be somewhat more primitive, the music seems to have more relatively modern influences than Heilung. I'm kind of talking the difference between the original versions of Beowulf that must have been handed down orally, and the written version we have which was recorded I believe by monks after Christianity arrived ( and probably edited for content. I don't recall a lot of shout outs to pagan gods at any rate) The lyrical content here seems pretty original, but the music itself seems more refined. Or I'm completely wrong, happens a lot.
@@HistoryBuff you do realize that if you put the complete copywrite notice at start of your videos that usually prevents blockages. (this is both for music and movie reactions videos) Heilung has been covered by other reactors many many many times without issue on copywrite (the reason why i individually know this is because i watch ahell of alot of reaction videos on multi formats weather it be music or tv shows etc) Just try reposting with notice that prob work for ya if not just trying to repost depending on the one it is your doing
@Nick Gillingham thank you for that bit of advice, but copyright is way more complicated than that. What you've recommended works about as well at the divorce decree that states I would not be held liable if my ex wife stopped paying the mortgage that was in my name. It meant absolutely nothing. Sorry, maybe tmi, but it's the best analogy I could come up with. Putting a disclaimer at the front means nothing because reaction videos are what they are and the folks overseeing CR know that. 99% of these videos, including most of mine, do not fall under fair use and, therefore do violate copyright. The exceptions to these are vocal coaches who use the videos for educational purposes and a few of my videos that I delve deeply into the history or science of things. If a reaction video does not employ fair use criteria, a disclaimer will not matter. Another reason it doesn't help is most claims are automatic. An AI platform runs to check for the use of copyrighted material. Usually, the claims hit when you upload, then you are able to dispute it and this is where the "disclaimer" will matter because the dispute is viewed by a human, who I guarantee does not watch the video so the explanation is in the dispute, not the video. Though these claims are automatic, they may trip days or even months later (as in this case) as the AI tool becomes more robust. There have also been an epidemic of scam artists putting claims on videos to make some revenue. Does not make sense in this case because a blocked video makes no revenue. To make things more complicated, there are different levels of claims. Some just request data from your video, some share the revenue, some take all the add revenue and some just block your video. These are not the artists doing this, rather the label or even the country they are in (Russia and Germany are apt do do this). There are several reasons why you can view other Heilung videos. Sometimes, a youtuber who consistently shows fair use in their videos or gets special permission from the label can be "white listed", meaning their videos never get a CR claim on them. Some youtubers have tricks like changing the color or orientation of the original video or even the speed of the song. Pausing does not help. More likely though, the videos you saw just got lucky as I sometimes do. Just like this video was up for almost a year before the block came. As for your recommendation to repost, I already had a dispute on this video. Originally it was just for add revenue but it wasnt blocked. If you try again to repost, it could create a strike on my account. 3 of those and I'm shut down for good. Anyways, there's my exhaustive explanation of CR. Hopefully you now see it's a bit more complicated than you realize. I felt the need to respond in this fashion because a less knowledgeable youtuber than I could follow your advice and end up in a sticky situation.
All scientific research shows vikings were inspired by cowboys and bolcheviks, thats why we are still politically divided , and this this comment will not help at all :)

Of meat and bone
Of flesh and skin
into weather and wind

I summon you into the mountain blue
Where neither sun nor moonshine can reach you
I summon you into the forest where no one dwells

Will find their lifelong ailment cured
Leave it behind on Healing-Peak

A norwegian would never do that, nor be expected to do so.
That's really great information! I have a deep respect and interest in language. I apologize for misrepresenting them. I'm not sure how, but I massively screwed up when I put together where each band was from.
You should react to Einar Selviks solo stuff outside of Wardruna. Try Einar Selvik - Snake pit poetry, Hrafnsmál or Dagar eru Taldir!
Wardruna and Heilung are my favorite norweigan bands that arent heavy metal (traditionally, anyway). Eilenar from Wardruna worked on the music for the Tv show Vikings and appeared in several key scenes basically as himself singing on the show itself.
Thank you so much for reacting to this amazing performance 🥰🥰 Please react to Wardruna and Aurora "Helvegen" 🙂🙂
Wardruna being "well researched" would be an understatement.
Their version of the Voluspá poem (from the poetic Edda) is fantastic.
Ps.
Yes, they/him(Einar Selvik) worked on Vikings, and AC Valhalla.
Awesome!!!! One of those books behind me is actually a translation of the younger and older Eddas!
Oh my gosh! Really!? I said Eluveitie was from Ireland too initially.
Wow! That's incredible! I'll have to re-watch those episodes!
Wardruna is awesome
Your background is super sick. Really works with your whole concept!
Both very good, but my vote for Wardruna, always
This is a Norse version of a vision quest sung in Old Norse.
This isn't old norse or old norwegian. It's sung in modern norwegian. He sings in a west-norwegian dialect close to his own. The lyrics are written in nynorsk, one of the two official written standards of Norwegian 🇳🇴
I listen to this song when I'm playing The Elder Scrolls Skyrim.
Leon
Lol, all hail the algorithm! Thanks for the great information!
@@HistoryBuff Haha, indeed. You're most welcome! I just wouldn't necessarily quote me on anything that I wrote because both interests and carrier wise, I'm in a completely different field. I just went ahead and shared my thoughts on what I was watching and reading (and feeling), and as such, I can't vouch for the accuracy of my words. But you did ask what our opinion was and mine aligned with yours, so I went ahead and shared what was going through my head. If you ever react to SKYND, do tag me, although I'll hopefully see it since I subbed to your channel. I'm always curious what people think when they listen to them, and how is it that they interpret their work.
Awesome! Thanks for the sub!
@@HistoryBuff I enjoy music, video games, history, as well as Sabaton, so your channel is right up my alley. I was more than happy to do so! :)
A different experience🎵🎼🎶
😶👍
Good to see you buddy!
Oh lord have mercy, PLEEEEASE react to more Scandinavian/Germanic folk music!
So many react channels do one or two videos and completely forget about it.
PLEASE DIVE INTO THIS RABBIT HOLE HEAVEN!
Lol, ok! Where should I go next!?
@@HistoryBuff Well unlike most artists, the vast majority of Wardrunas songs are masterpieces, including the album songs.
If you’re interested in more from the genre itself I HIGHLY recommend Forndom and Tenhi. Both are less popular but equally cherished.
I also have my own personal playlist I’ve been adding songs to since I discovered this amazing music in 2012. It’s mostly Norse/Germanic but it’s got other stuff too, all folk though and all fulfill the feeling of primal connection to nature, our ancestors, and ourselves.
Alternatively if you don’t trust the link, it’s on my profile called “Viking/Norse Music”
Here is the link:
ua-cam.com/play/PL21f_D8rjDf-mRA7bhLqqGZarJhAdoPLr.html
There’s quite a lot I know but most of them are quite good, added mostly one by one as I discovered them, so most should be of good quality, all will be of at least decent quality guaranteed.
Here is the link to that:

Wow! That Playlist is VERY impressive! If you dont mind, rather than reacting, I will start listening to these. I still will cover more wardruna and I see the Hu on there too which I will also cover very soon.
Great song and I am a fan of both bands.
Your description is wrong for Heilung as well. Heilung's members are from Denmark, Norway, and Germany. The female singer, Maria, is Norwegian.
@Evan Beaton Try reading. Maria is Norwegian. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heilung
@Evan Beaton Nope. They are from Norway, Denmark and Germany
Band in question is "Judicator", and from what I can tell, themes are ancient/medieval history. Their album "Let There Be Nothing" follows the life of the Byzantine commander Belisarius. I can recommend "Gloria" (ua-cam.com/video/z4-3dhGfwec/v-deo.html), been stuck in my head for the past few days. :p
😱😱🤯🤯NICE!!!! I'll definitely have to check that out!
Where is your heilung Video? Also you might wanna Watch Wardruna+Aurora: Helvegen
Dang, looks like it was blocked a few months later. Sometimes that happens with copyright claims, especially in certain countries.
Daheim also makes some fantastic stuff
more please of Wardruna and Einar Selvik..kalandra, aurora , Amonth Amart...the viking culture is amazing.
This is Norway btw, not Sweden.
Jackson Crawford. Old norse language, old norse mythology
The songs name means healing mountain
My issue in your description is that wardruna is Norwegian not swedish. Einar is from a town (Bergen) on the west coast of Norway.
Yea, someone else called me out on that too. Its fixed. For this video at least. I'll fix all the rest later
@@HistoryBuff I was just making sure you had all the right information. Side note: einar wrote and performed music for the show vikings and he was a huge part of the assassins creed Valhalla soundtrack. My favorite from there is Hrafnsmál- the words of the raven.
I screwed up Eluveitie's country as well
Video mostly taking in Iceland 🧡🌌♓
Nope. Shot in Tustna in western Norway.
Wardruna is pronounced with a V sound, not a W at the beginning...just an FYI
What happened to the contest? Did you abandon it? Why so?
Lol, not at all. I took a big break from videos. Ill get there eventually
@@HistoryBuff I sure hope so. Also, any news on the winners so far?
@@ranekeisenkralle8265 I'm really glad someone is interested. I didnt really see too much buzz about it do I didnt think anyone really cared. I'll take a look at it and get back to you
@@HistoryBuff Let me put it this way: For me it is a convenient way of being exposed to other bands I may not have heard yet - and maybe getting a taste of something else I might like.
@@ranekeisenkralle8265 it's so great to hear you say that. So many people are one artist people and they spam the hell out of other videos to get me to check out the one band or artist they refuse to stray from. Nothing makes me happier than when someone thanks me for introducing them to their new favorite band!
👊😎🛡️⚔️❣️🩸❤️🔥🕯️🪔🔥🤜⚡🤛🔥
Almost Old Norse. Close to Icelandic.
where is the Heilung video!!
Idk. Did it get blocked? I've been having random copyright claims pop up recently from old videos. I'll look into it
Shit, yep. It's been blocked.
@Nick Gillingham lol, it's that easy eh? You seem to really know your stuff.
It’s pronounced “High-loong” it’s German for “healing”. 😉
Norway
Norwegian
Ehhh..."Vikings"? Too few helmets, too many swords, too few spears. 😜

All scientific research shows vikings were inspired by cowboys and bolcheviks, thats why we are still politically divided , and this this comment will not help at all :)
