Pat. you are by far the best Thailand/ Bangkok youtuber. Your work is consistantly outstanding. Unique, interesting, passionate and captivating. I really apprectiate the effort you put into these videos. Thanks for sharing your personal knowledge and history of Bangkok along with your well researched history of this incredible city. I learn so much about Bangkok from you. Thanks for including some gay bangkok history on your channel ...I had a good laugh thinking about Babylons HiSo neighbours hearing Bronksi Beat and The Communards on heavy rotation every weekend and a soi full of muscle Marys on Songkran! Happy days!
Pat’s vids are just plain wonderful. I love cities and there are only a few videographers who bring the cultural & historical knowledge, wit, humor, empathy, love of cats and enthusiasm that Pat provides. Cheers and thx!
The old wooden houses are beautiful. So sad that all this lovely heritage is being ripped out to build yet another condo. Unfortunately money talks and corrupt money even louder.
BKK is getting soulless without those interesting old buildings with unique characters, lots of places been replaced by the modern skyscrapers. Miss those laid-back era.
My first visit to Bangkok was in 1966, R&R from the Vietnam War. About the Rex Hotel bit: My first wife and I were married in Bangkok on October 17, 1969. Our wedding reception was at the Rex Hotel on the pool and party floor. (If I knew how to do it, I'd post a photo or two of our reception.) She was Thai of course and I was stationed at Camp Friendship up near Khorat. We were married for 43 years, until she passed away in 2012. Over the years since our wedding, we visited Thailand probably 20 times, including once for my brother's wedding to a Thai lady up in Nong Khai. My mother especially liked to visit and she went with us at least 8 times over the years. Our son has moved back to Bangkok several years ago. That bit of the hotel in this video brought back memories of "long ago and far away". Thank you.
Brilliant video, as a Thai myself, I had no idea many of these places existed! It brings back a lot of memories of when I was a little boy in BKK. I hate that so many beautiful places are being demolished in favour of flashy condos.
I first stayed in the Federal Hotel in March of 1992. It was and will always remain like a second home to me. The location was ideal and the staff are still my friends to this day. Such a loss to Soi 11 and the many people how loved that hotel.
Travelled to Bangkok possibly 15 times over 20 years and I’m picking up a lot of valuable history and places to explore / visit on our next trip early in the new year thanks to this channel. Very much appreciated. Thanks BKK Pat.
I rarely comment, but this video series is absolutely amazing. I started traveling to Bangkok in February 2011 and spent hours walking around. Moved there from October 2018 to July 2023 and man it brings some memories, now I'm in Phuket for a lung cleaning therapy lol. Thank you Pat. Sincerely. it's a thank you from the heart, not just saying it. Please don't vanish, I need part4 😀 Have a lovely day good sir !
Same here, rarely comment, but Pat, i was in Bangkok first, in 2018, was going all the countries, but stayed in BK all three months, best decision ever
Loved this episode. 30 plus visits to Bangkok starting in 1991. A few nights at the Federal was always exciting. The food, the staff and the location was great. Great place to meet new people in the restaurant/coffee shop.
OMG! The Federal Hotel! How many nights Ive spent there! Loved the restaurant. It was a very sad day when they sold it and tore it down. It seemed every time I visited there was the same big fat German guy with his little GF at the pool. Rongram Federal RIP.
I’m so glad to have come across your channel (all by chance!) and have signed up immediately as a subscriber. I lived and worked in Bangkok from 1969 for over 30 years for different entities, the first one being Mater Dei School in Ploenchitr and the last the Asian Institute of Technology in Pathum Thani. Your vanishing Bangkok series surely filled me with nostalgia. I have retired in my home country, the Philippines, and continue to visit and revisit Thailand. It was a sad day when I surrendered my Resident certificates/documents to the Immigration Office and said goodbye to Thailand, my second home for so many years - in fact all my professional life. Thanks for your vlogs. I shall look forward to more in the future, and will recommend your channel to my Filipino friends and colleagues who like me have very fond memories of Thailand, the Thai people, Thai cuisine and everything Thai.
My first visit to Bangkok was in 2015. I appreciate seeing the old neighborhoods and businesses.Bangkok is becoming my 2nd City but I can imagine it was fascinating place before the turn of the Century.None the less it is still a unique City.
Thanks for the personal touch caption at 5:15! The Royal Orchid Sheraton (Riverside) has an awesome breakfast buffet, great swimming pools, and a magnificent river view. We’ve enjoyed stays there in December of 2022, July of 2023, and back in August of 2017. The ICONSIAM is located across the river. I need to emphasize just how awesome their buffet breakfast is! Excellent quality and extensive variety of food offerings. My father has also enjoyed about fifteen stays at the Sheraton dating back to the 1980’s!
I had to mention that Scott as you're almost a regular there and we've become friends. Shame that House no1 is only open for private stuff, but it's a lovely area. I am planning a proper video on that area, aka The creative district.....
Great work as usual Pat. The Federal Hotel was the first hotel I stayed at in Bangkok in 1996. Down Soi 11 towards Sukhumvit was a resturant called Pinochio's. It was the best Italian food I have ever had anywhere. It was a 13 or 15 course meal, no menu for 500 baht.
I am feeling older watching your show Pat but learning about Bangkok in areas I didn’t know existed. I first went to Bangkok in 1971. The biggest tip I could give anyone is if you want to go to a Robinson’s Department store just tell the Taxi Driver Loubinsoms . They can’t pronounce an (R).
As always an interesting video about the past in Bangkok. My first visit in Bangkok was in 2011 and I remember my time in the Bed-Supper Club in Soi 11. Since them this street changes his face nearly completely. Kind of sad. Good video, Pat👍
As tired as it was I really liked the Federal hotel I stayed there many times over the years and there was always Roger (American) slurping beer under the tree by the pool in the sun happy days.
Another great video!. You are the only UA-camr in Thailand with this special approach of history!. And you always find abandoned place which really tell a story!
I really do enjoy these uploads of vanishing Bangkok and history lessons of yours. I lived in BKK in the 90s and when visiting I miss the old Bangkok. Maybe this is a natural process when you are getting older 😊
Hey Pat...I lived in Bkk 2005-2014. Some of the places featured in.this vlog I remember seeing or used to go to such as Thonglor soi.38 food stalls, the Coliseum where I was given a shoulder massage while taking a piss. This past weekend my family and I.were staying in Bangna and I.started filming all.the condo crap going up and displacing old neighborhoods and houses. Was planning to feature the rampent development taking over in Bkk then I watched your vlog. Always interesting and informative. Next month my wife will start her new job in Bkk so we'll be Bangkokians again. But we're not giving up our other home down south near the beach. Hope we can meet up one of these days in the Big Mango. Fyi..we had the same happy weed seller Queens Park Hotel back in the day...cheers!
Your videos are such a nostalgic trip for me. Makes me realise what's gone and some great reminders why I loved living here. Great to be part of it. ❤ Still here btw 17 years in counting
great video as always Pat.....lots of memories there in that lot. Thanks for your terrific take on the history of Bangkok. I hope one day that the Thai authorities take note and work with you for a larger project
Wow. So nice pictures, so many infos. Thx so much. That at gallery looks so good. Honos alit artes. If condos distroy clubs, may be we need a law that they have to give space to the clubs below one of their car park decks. 14.13 ... that old building in royal hands looks like indiana jones or Lara Croft 23:48 ... the bonus shot shows how much more space there was in that time and trees and air and how better the car design was. Looks so clean and beautiful. Lookinf forward to the next episode very much
Hey Pat, I agree, soi 11 used to be much more of an adventure. Where would suggest now is the best play to go for adventure? I even miss the tunnel between soi 5 & 7!
Depends really if you want more farang or Thai orientated places, there's a lot more choice nowadays since the days when I was last heading down soi 11 (2002-2008)
The Federal Hotel is where I first stayed in Bangkok in 1987 when I was a mere 23 years old and what an experience THAT was for a First-Timer like myself! Still, I DID have a wonderful time there and the service was great. I went back there in 1988 and it was fully-booked so I ended up at the Sukhumvit Crown Hotel which has become my HQ in Bangkok when I'm down from Chiang Mai to visit. The Crown is now called SI 6 but otherwise, it's about the same and I'm always happy to visit it. Thanks for another great video, Pat--brings back many-a-memory! 🙂
Your videos just get better. Thank you for all the effort that you go to. The Federal Hotel was an old haunt of mine back in the day Domino's and Cheap Charlie being just down the road.
Another great video. My wife and i stayed in the apt/small hotel where that smoothie lady and food market is on Soi 38, right at the BTS. 2005 or so. Those were the days!
The Federal Hotel was the first hotel I ever stayed at in Bangkok, June 1980. If I'm not mistaken, there was a "Mister Doughnut" up on Sukhumvit and a small go-go bar at Soi 11. I was never able to stay there again as it was always full. My go-to hotel became the Crown, on Soi 29. Bring back the good old days!
Great report Pat. Around 1 year ago or more, I asked you to do a report on what happened to Soi Twilight. I am so happy to see that you finally did it, and you gave us a bonus extra piece about what happened to the famous Babylon. All the best Pat - I truly enjoy your UA-cam channel.
Yes, I always had it in mind to cover Soi Twilight at some point, after you mentioned it and then a few others, then someone said ''What about Babylon?" and I realised they weren't that far apart in terms of distance and when they closed.
Loved how the Beatniq condo at least tried to connect its building to the original Rex Hotel, could so so easily have just been another soulless glass facade. Would like to visit the Bangkokian museum and see the old wooden buildings of Bang Rak. In the meantime I'm off to listen to my old Frankie goes to Hollywood albums.
The Beatniq did a good job even the same angle as the Rex, hope they didn't reuse the foundations though! I forgot to mention Holly Johnson in that segment!
Your video transported me to another world like only good films do. A consummate composition of music, stills, moving pictures and narration. Awesome and precious.
“ slithering south “ by Steve van Beek, He was living in bkk prior to 2020. Guy has an amzing story about travel chiang Mai to Bkk in a canoe in 1970’s. You two should meet.
extremely interesting videos. I personally love the different eras of buildings in bangkok and I'm just a fan of urban decay and history in general. I used to frequent Bangkok 23 years ago but these days next to the beach in rural south Thailand. Its rather sad to see certain areas erased by "progress". I heard the Lido and Scala are no more? Loved those cinemas. I'll definately check out the indian area. I had no idea. Thought Parhurat was the only one. Cheers
I loved the old Rex hotel, had a great coffee shop that served an orange juice which had a fantastic unique taste that I have never had anywhere else in my life. Stayed in the Rex many times in the 80's and 90's
I remember a few of those places, I remember staying on Sukhumvit soi 22 second time in Krung Thep. Great place, No showers, only a big earthenware water container and a plastic scooper, water was cold. About 10 Ladies had Rooms there, helped a few write letters to one or many sponsors. Had a huge python come through one Day. Crazy place in 1985. Thanks for some lost Memories Pat.
Bkk Pat, I can see you love CATS!! Good, please do a special on "Bangkok Cats" or even "Thai Cats around Thailand" - and Thais love for them, the history etc, I am sure you are up for it!
Hi Pat, I used to stay at the Rex evry year from 1998 till its closure. The rooms were old but great, spacious, some of the aircons a bit of a lottery. Bathrooms had bath thubs and powerful showers. Big bed with great hard mattresses (Darling brand), fantastic sleep for my bad back. The staff had been there for years and most were very friendly from the door guys, reception staff, cleaners to the old manager . The breafast was really good at the Rexa 24 hours coffee shop where I used to get my "poat eg" (poached eggs) , bacon just the way I liked it by the old lady who also was working there all that time. Used to be 1000-1200 baht a night. I miss it very much, every time greeted like an old friend. Luckily, I found another good place but I am keeping that one to myself, selfish I know, but I dont want it to be spolied (:>)))). When I used to stay a few omths in Bangkok, I stated in AA House Soi 36, cheap and chearful, 6000/months but great staff again, good coffee shop ( friendly lady cook with 6 fingers hands and the cat also had 6/7 fingers paws, no kidding), laundry and a shop where you could get most daily necessities. Also moto taxis just outside, very conveniant for Thonglor BTS and many shops too, Tesco and BigC on Rama4, Emporium at Soi24, etc. Not sure if AA House still there...Cheers.
I fell into the Rex at midnight once in 2008 when l was too lazy to go all the way home, too drunk and taxis refused me. I remember it was a bit worn out and on the ground floor.
Vanishing Bangkok, indeed too many old and beautiful buildings are demolished for big condo’s and shopping malls andso. I hope they still keep some nice buildings but money always win most of the time. Really sad to see that the famous streetfood Thong Lor area is gone. Great work again Pat this channel is really something special.
They just said "don't worry the street food stalls will be relocated elsewhere" but they don't realise people wanna sit there in that location not in some crappy soulless food court
Great episode. Keep the series going. Would be cool to do other areas too. Like Pattaya. Vanishing Pattaya. I remember when Q-Bar and BSC was the trendiest places in Asia almost. That's where all the hot shots went to hang out
Good idea. Pattaya l remember Gregs Kitchen and the many VCD stores and the old Royal Garden hotel which became the Marriott, l see Mikes still has the same old sign!
Thanks for this great series Pat. I am interested in history in general and have been coming to Bangkok every year since my son moved there in 2014. It is so great to learn more about the history of different areas in this amazing city…many of which I have visited over the years.
Great stuff....I went to the Colloseum once or twice ..good fun. Thanks for that. Side note to the old Rex Hotel....it was also a haven for Heroin pushers...friend of mine (himself recovering twice from the habit, just to die of cancer and heart attack...) said you could see the blood on the walls and ceiling from prior users.
I stayed (or rather fell into) at the Rex one night in 2008 after a heavy night, even after the booze and weed it didn't hide the fact that it was pretty terrible.
It's only when watching your videos that it becomes apparent just how much has changed and how wide those changes have been. Still lots more changes to come, at least some things have been saved and hopefully there will be more saved in the future . Cheers Pat for documenting these times, regards to you and May :) Are the cats the only constant .... :)
Pat, Nice meeting you at last weeks meetup on soi 11. Having spent 6 years in Bangkok from 1998 to 2004, and then a month each year thereafter, thanks for this video. Bangkok has changed so much since 1998, it’s hard to recognize each year when I return. Last month was my first return after covid, I looked for Cheap Charlie’s for an hour. Too sad…
Nice video Pat, remember a lot of those places, soi 11Cheap charlies, The Rex and soi 38, and that red bus! There's about 5 of them running up and down Thong lor,( Ovens on wheels)🤣
Enjoyed a lot thankk you ! I miss the old bangkok you showed some off here in the 80s i used to stay near Lumpini boxing stadium ,in soi Ngam du Phli hotel malaysia area and Kenny’s coffee shop ,so it was good to see sathon area where i used to go back then ,a bonus in this video was you showed my old favourite the federal hotel and the coffee shop ,soi 11 is almost unrecognisable now with the knocking down of cheap Charlies and that side of soi ,i still stay in a G I Hotel whenever i come there another great video thank you 🙏 was the flooded scene Lumpini park The old photos you find are really great 🙏🙏
Enjoyed that Pat..... Aurum is a wonderful gallery; I had the privilege of watching Goldie paint there in the back room. I must check out the Bangkokian museum sometime.
@@BangkokPat I have an invite for that via my mate who I introduced to the gallery (he bought a few bits). I almost definitely won't go though as I only get a few hundred views haha
Thanks for this excellent vlog. Love the Bangkokian House. Well worth the visit. When I was in Bangkokj in 1982 I met a young English teacher who lived in a tram carriage near the Victory Monument. I wonder if anyone remembers this kind of accommodation.

I wish I could come and see it 20 years ago.
I first went to Bangkok in 1988. It has changed so much. Too much gentrification destroys a city's heart and history.
The corporates are like pimps, getting rid of everything to the highest bidder! (Rant over🙈)
Every city in the world goes through the same I'm afraid.
The old wooden houses are beautiful. So sad that all this lovely heritage is being ripped out to build yet another condo. Unfortunately money talks and corrupt money even louder.
What type of gentrification if you don't mind elaborating?
Suggest google "gentrification"@@sayajinmamuang
BKK is getting soulless without those interesting old buildings with unique characters, lots of places been replaced by the modern skyscrapers.
Miss those laid-back era.
Yeah. But doesn't the good stuff just get shuffled along to less developed areas ? Some of the night markets do. But I don't know about anything else.
My first visit to Bangkok was in 1966, R&R from the Vietnam War. About the Rex Hotel bit: My first wife and I were married in Bangkok on October 17, 1969. @@BangkokPat You're welcome Pat and many thanks again!
OMG 😱 Don’t vanish Pat! I’ve enjoyed your channel about Bangkok’s social and it’s history too much. You’re the foremost expert on the subject.
Thanks a lot! I don't think anyone is doing anything whatsoever about the city other than the usual places and food
I could not agree more with your comment, however back then with no BTS or Metro it took forever to get from point A to Point B
Brilliant video, as a Thai myself, I had no idea many of these places existed!
It brings back a lot of memories of when I was a little boy in BKK.
I hate that so many beautiful places are being demolished in favour of flashy condos.

This is an example of how they have little regard for the past
I loved this. Had my first trip to Bangkok in 2009 and even in just 14 years, the city has changed immensely.
I would love to find a timelapse of the skyline over the last 20yrs!
I first stayed in the Federal Hotel in March of 1992. It was and will always remain like a second home to me. The location was ideal and the staff are still my friends to this day. Such a loss to Soi 11 and the many people how loved that hotel.

The 1942 flooded location looks like Rama VI statue in the entrance of Lumpini Park, no?
It certainly is!

Depends really if you want more farang or Thai orientated places, there's a lot more choice nowadays since the days when I was last heading down soi 11 (2002-2008)
@@BangkokPat I like both. I enjoy thai music but also like the farang bars.
Another magical journey with you in Bangkok.Your information base is amazing
This video was superlevel. Wish i could go back, back to Bangkok ,or in time, yes
Glad to hear it Sean, many had such nice memories of the Federal, no wonder so many suggested it!
Love your videos! So many memories from past 25 years....
Fantastic to see Billy again after 16 years.
Your videos just get better. Thank you for all the effort that you go to. The Federal Hotel was an old haunt of mine back in the day Domino's and Cheap Charlie being just down the road.
Cheers Rob, a lot of requests for the Federal, everyone has a story! Cheap Charlies was moved to On Nur, it still looks exactly the same!
I saw the Crown earlier this year
Great report Pat.
You have a very unique channel and approach. Well done you got a sub!
Much love from London
Thank you very much and glad you found the channel! 🐱
@BangkokPat the 80's was a fantastic time for music, just glad my parents didn't understand any of the words from some of the music I was playing.
Your video transported me to another world like only good films do.
A consummate composition of music, stills, moving pictures and narration.
Awesome and precious.
Cheers 😻
“ slithering south “ by Steve van Beek, He was living in bkk prior to 2020. Guy has an amzing story about travel chiang Mai to Bkk in a canoe in 1970’s. You two should meet.
Wow Pat! The old photos you pull out are amazing. I lived in Bangkok in 1969/1970 when I was 13 and 14 years old.
Many great memories for you which is fantastic😻😎
extremely interesting videos. Cheers
Wonderful video and information. Thanks.
I loved the old Rex hotel, had a great coffee shop that served an orange juice which had a fantastic unique taste that I have never had anywhere else in my life. Stayed in the Rex many times in the 80's and 90's
so did I first stayed in 82, sad to see it go
I remember a few of those places, I remember staying on Sukhumvit soi 22 second time in Krung Thep.
I will second your request😅.
I did a cat video two years ago but another one is overdue.....
Brilliant Pat. Cheers. Enthralled and entertaining all in the one hit. 🙏
Yes so true and besides the tourist like the streetfood stalls@@BangkokPat
Great episode. Keep the series going. Would be cool to do other areas too. Like Pattaya. Vanishing Pattaya.
I remember when Q-Bar and BSC was the trendiest places in Asia almost. That's where all the hot shots went to hang out
Good idea. Pattaya l remember Gregs Kitchen and the many VCD stores and the old Royal Garden hotel which became the Marriott, l see Mikes still has the same old sign!
Another brilliant and important contribution. Great work!
Thanks for this great series Pat. I am interested in history in general and have been coming to Bangkok every year since my son moved there in 2014. It is so great to learn more about the history of different areas in this amazing city…many of which I have visited over the years.
another great video realy enjoyed this this so many great memories thank you bangkok pat
Glad you enjoyed it John cheers😻
Nice one again Pat....Fab upload again.
Well done Pat,i havent seen any videos about Bangkok so intricately compiled.Thank you so much, kop khun krub.
Thank you 😬😷😻🐱😻🐱
Love the trip down memory lane...
Cheers Pat for documenting these times, regards to you and May :)
Are the cats the only constant .... :)
Great video 👍
Thanks 👍
Pat, Nice meeting you at last weeks meetup on soi 11. Having spent 6 years in Bangkok from 1998 to 2004, and then a month each year thereafter, thanks for this video. Bangkok has changed so much since 1998, it’s hard to recognize each year when I return. Last month was my first return after covid, I looked for Cheap Charlie’s for an hour. Too sad…
Thanks Kyle, Charlies is now in Sukhumvit 50 at On Nut!
Goldie will be there on the 28th at a private even l'm covering....
@@BangkokPat Fantastic! He's a funny and affable chap. I'll look out for the video.
@@BangkokPat I have an invite for that via my mate who I introduced to the gallery (he bought a few bits). I almost definitely won't go though as I only get a few hundred views haha
Your humorous quips continue to develop.
I'm getting there slowly....
Thanks Pat, just got back from BKK, your videos allow me to still be there.
Think the shot of boat in flood is victory monument
Cheers Danny. The flooded part is outside Lumpini Park, l thought my recent Lumpini video would give some clues..
Great content as usual, mate!
Tarek
Thanks Pat, awesome vid. Bit of a shame that so much of the 'character' of the city is being replaced by shiny condos.
you must be the no 1 bangkok guru, what a knowledge! thumbs up!
Cheers, myself and OTR are the only ones flying the history flags on UA-cam Thailand!
@@BangkokPatI walked past OTR near Phrong Pong or Asoke earlier this year. 😊
Thanks for this excellent vlog. Love the Bangkokian House. Well worth the visit. When I was in Bangkokj in 1982 I met a young English teacher who lived in a tram carriage near the Victory Monument. I wonder if anyone remembers this kind of accommodation.
The Vanishing Bangkok, etc. series are so good. Keep up the amazing effort.✌️💖
Thank you so much 😁
Great video. Thank you.
Thanks Pat
Immensely enjoyable Pat. 👍👍
