    I am a "Bangkokian" since 1992 and BangkokPat is awesome, legit, and super informative. As an old dog I really enjoy when Pat is rewinding into the past and works in
    sequences from previous years - the timeline effect. Affirmative. Very well done and so super informative. I have been to many Bangkok Cinema's over the last 30 years. I hope one day Pat will bring up the Siam Hotel, its coffee shop, on Petchburi Road.
    Re: Ramkhamheng Sport Complex - I swim the 50 meter pool since 2001. The original annual membership was 350 THB - there were days I could bring a guest, another swimmer, for 5thb. During the membership sign up a health certificate (100THB) was required. Mine is still on file with no update required. Our days back then
    were slow, super friendly and simply joyful. Love the work and so glad I found this. Thank you!

    Bravo! I just rewatched this video; an artful blend of storytelling, rare archival footage, history, culture, urban planning insights, sly humor (read the captions), cats and a guy on an elephant (15:25) for 2 seconds max. Viva Bangkok Pat!

    Your videos around Bangkok elicit mak sentimental memories for me. In my 20's and 30's BKK was my candy store where I indulged in everything the town had to offer, good and bad. Now, in my 50's and married to a wonderfully down to earth Thai woman, I enjoy Bangkok in a much different way. I notice the places that were once thriving that have been passed over for the latest thing. I notice the vendors who are getting elderly but hanging on even when they have the last shop on the upper floor of a dying market building. I get my haircut from the old guy who has failing eyesight with his barber college certificate from the 1970's hanging on the wall of a shared shop in a part of town that's been left behind. Yes, your videos are perfect for me. Thanks.

    • @Lord_Funk
      @Lord_Funk 3 місяці тому

      @@andrewmunn1724 That's so sad. Like I wrote in my own longer stand alone comment/reply, it seems like a lot of the charm of Bangkok is gone. Bangkok used to feel unique. Old alongside new, skyscrapers beside old smaller buildings. Street vendors beside modern brand shops. Now it more looks and feels like some generic corporate and bank controlled large Asian city. Kind of like Singapore, Taipei etc, dime a dozen. To me it already seemed like the BTS Skytrain was the initial phase in that. It made areas which used to take hours in traffic to come to, have fast access and then slowly but surely large hotels and malls wanted spots along those lines (preferably near stations). Then the military government/regimes/juntas in mid 2000/2010's up to 2019 chasing away all the street vendors and people was forced indoors to restaurants and shopping malls. Curfews, internet censorship, heavier crack downs on brand copy shirts, watches and stuff. Like it was a step-by-step plan all along to force people into shopping from the stores and such owned by the Thai elite and corporations. Then the pandemic hit the last nail in the coffin. It's just not the unique Bangkok feel anymore.

    Hi Pat.
    This brought back memories.
    I guess I must be one of the only still living farangs who can relate to old Bangkok .
    I first arrived in Bkk in 1978 and stayed at the Indra Hotel. Thereafter I'd either stay there or the more downmarket Opera Hotel which was in a soi off Petchburi road but also assesible via the sois from the back of Indra Hotel and the Pratunam garment market.
    Nowdays I live in Chiang mai and on the rare occasions I go to Bkk I don't recognise it .
    I really appreciate your videos which are so nostalgic for me . If the buildings could only speak , the stories could curl your toes.
    The Opera Hotel was particularly colourful. The ground floor rooms dedicated to curtain hidden fables. 😉

      I walked with the girls of Rainbow bar ( Sukhumvit pre Nana Plaza)in '82 to the Pratunam market . It was late November and they were trying on their 'Christmas outfits'. It was tough to sit there watching them changing their clothes to see what they liked best! Oh happy days!
