That is a very tricky one, but you nailed it.
It's interesting to see how brilliant, yet off the wall, Ed's licks & phrasing were.

Thanks! He did have a set of licks that were unusual, but they were a finite bag of licks. Once you know them, it is relatively easy to figure out anything he played. The problem is that most people don’t really work hard enough to learn his licks correctly. I’ve been transcribing Van Halen music for decades and I work to gather all the available evidence to prove exactly how Eddie played what he played. For example, you can see my transcription of “Eruption” which appeared in the February 2021 issue of Guitar World. Mine is the only detailed and accurate transcription of that piece even though several attempts were made to figure it out over several decades. Please let me know if you have questions on any Van Halen piece…I do lessons and custom transcriptions as well!

And the seemingly simple ending climb, that ends the main "Mean street" solo, is never transcribed correctly.
I did see your Eruption tab in GW years back, and remembered your name from way back in the
      CVH website days.
I thought to myself, Garbeaj did it, he hit the big time!

Thank you for the encouragement Tom! As much of a Van Halen fan as I am, my original music tends to be more folky…I co-write with an amazing female singer that I’ve worked with for decades and we’ve done our duo act off and on since 1997 and we occasionally do some full band shows of covers with a few originals. Now that I’m 52 with a 9 year old and a 6 year old and an amazing wife, I tend to work on transcribing Van Halen’s catalog and some other transcribing work. I also give more guitar lessons than ever, especially over Zoom.
But I’m really grateful for your interest in my original music…it’s nothing spectacular, but my singer has a great voice and she’s incredibly charismatic. She’s somewhat of a local legend here in Houston. She and blues firecracker Carolyn Wonderland started out together and I think of my music as a means to showcase her incredible voice and presence. I really should put some examples on my UA-cam channel…I neglect it because my own study of Edward has been so intense for so many decades and my own home life sort’ve takes over everything. But I receive your comment with the sincerest gratitude and I do take it as encouragement to put some of my originals out there! Thank you again so much for your comment…our mutual pal JD Simo has been a dear friend for years and he has also offered me encouragement as well. I’m not anywhere near the cocksman that you guys are and I’m floored that you checked out my little clip and completely gobsmacked at your considerate comment!

@@AllenGarberGuitarFun I saw the thing on the UTBN UA-cam channel where you were VERY harshly criticizing that guy in that Van Halen tribute band…
Where was THIS sweet kind polite guy who just responded to my comment at THAT moment Allen?
It’s ok to think negative things to yourself about what other people are doing, but to publicly attack them so viciously is a pretty bad choice.
There’s all kinds of music I severely dislike too, but you simply just CANNOT go around attacking people like you did…it just doesn’t work man.
The EVH catalog is not YOUR music Allen…yes you may have dedicated your whole life to studying it…but you had absolutely nothing to do with the creation of it.
Even if Eddie himself, who DID create it, bashed someone as strongly as you did for doing a bad EVH tribute band it would still be very awkward and tasteless…
but for someone who is just a FAN like yourself, to bash the guy that harshly is just totally unacceptable.
I don’t even know the guy, but you might want to seriously consider a heartfelt apology to him my friend.

@501chorusecho You are quite correct. I try to bear in mind that anyone that is on a stage or making money in any kind of way in the music business is performing a miracle and I should treat those that have done so as miracle workers. I honestly believe that.
I have devoted a lot of my life to transcribing Edward’s playing and I do get particularly riled when I see some players attempt to play his music in a tribute band without a solid basic understanding of his playing. This is why I’ve tried to help anyone in understanding how Eddie played what he played on a technical level. This is the part that gets missed so often by players and transcribers. There is the MAJOR component of pocket and soul that is well beyond the mechanics that I transcribe and teach, but I concentrate on helping people get the notes and articulations correct as a first step to getting deep into the timing and the soul. That guy and others are clearly lost on the mechanics and I was shocked that so many were commenting on how he sounded “exactly like Edward” or words to that effect and I overreacted to that. You are right…I didn’t need to go so hard.
What the UTBN people may have left out (I wasn’t aware they were commenting on me) is that I’ve given free private lessons to several tribute band players over the last ten years. I really want to help people in any way that I can who want to better comprehend Edward’s playing. I’m really sincere in this.

in the future, just try to keep in mind that we all (including Eddie Van Halen, just ask him) are just a bunch of musical children when we compare ourselves to the Beatles.
if any of us need to be remind ourselves how to be humble at any point, just think about the fact that those 4 low income boys from liverpool that happened to write the most culturally, multi-generationally inclusive, important music the world has ever seen or will ever see, weren't even 30 years old when the band broke up.

Thanks! It is note-for-note to the album because I transcribed it myself. The first solo is very simple and it was transcribed correctly in the official transcription book for the ‘Women and Children First’ album so if you have that you will have a correct transcription. The official transcription books are not accurate in general, but they did get some parts correct and the first solo from “Take Your Whiskey Home” is one of those parts that they got correct. You can get the book from Amazon here: a.co/d/85jwTQd I can transcribe the solo for you and it will be more detailed and accurate than the official book, but I charge $65 as a minimum for transcribing the solo and putting all of the important details into it such as the correct left hand fingering and right hand picking directions. Let me know if you want me to do it for you and I can send you my PayPal details and get your e-mail to send the completed solo transcription to you. Cheers!

Awesome video Allen. I like knowing exactly how Eddie played it, even if it might take me longer to do it that way. Really enjoy these videos. Would be great to see you and Doug Steele do a breakdown of Spanish Fly, like you both did for Eruption. And if you provided Ed's note for note tabs for it; that would be icing on the cake! Thank you for your contributions.

    • @AllenGarberGuitarFun
      @AllenGarberGuitarFun  2 роки тому +1

Thanks very much indeed! I will say point blank that there will never be an accurate and playable transcription of “Spanish Fly”. I discussed this with Doug on one of our video chats on his channel recently, but basically “Spanish Fly” is loaded with so many mistakes that it is indeed impossible to notate all of them and be able to actually play the piece accurately as it was originally played on the album. I also discussed this with my friend Troy Grady of the ‘Cracking the Code’ series. It’s just a mess. The best that I can do is try to come up with a repeatable way to play what I believe he INTENDED to play, but that will be as good as it gets. I actually started learning “Spanish Fly” before I started working on “Eruption” back when I was 13 in 1985. Trust me when I say that there are no accurate transcriptions, online lessons or UA-cam covers of “Spanish Fly”. That includes my own. I always say that if a human being played it, it is always possible to learn it. But I truly believe it is impossible to accurately transcribe or play “Spanish Fly” as it was recorded on ‘Van Halen II’.

The "mistakes" are then more about understanding the way he plays and getting the right feel!
