The fact that Analog Obsession is a pure passion project giving out these plugins for free blows my mind. It's like Blender but in the world of vst plugins.
What really impressed me was that the AO added character but with a lot less noticeable compression. That's what I'd expect from a real 1176, so, kudos to AO!
I liked the Wave Blue with fast Attack and Release on drums, I liked the Fetish on the Slow Attack drums. On Vocals I feel the Waves both sound more like a 76, but I felt the Fetish was as you say more transparent, but that was also part due to it sounding less like a 76 IMO. I actually preferred the sound of the Fetish on vocals, sounds more natural. I have the Fetish, I don't have any other 76 comps, but I wanted to see how it stacked up against a good plugin emulation like the Waves. Stacks up really well.

@@SoundcastStudios ideally, for the full Dr. Pepper effect, you also want to be driving the input gain really high. You want to crunch the vocals really good. Full quote: Jim Scott's recommended "Dr. Pepper" settings (attack at 10 o’clock, release at 2 o’clock, and 4:1 ratio) with tons of input level on the 1176 resulted in a thickly compressed vocal with tons of texture, and a gain structure that allowed Page to go from light harmonies to full metal blast with no adjustments to mic pre or record level.
Fetish is driven far more. It distorts like hell in first go through. But man, that is a beautiful thick distortion ;) Blacky sounds extremely hollow on the voice. Awkward AO decision to reverse the attack and release settings. For a time to get used to the actual 1176 settings and now I have to rethink with this AO plugin? Nooooo :o)
i was more curious how it compared to the waves version and since the waves version doesn't have any of that i didn't feel a need to test it. It's free so you can downlaod it and try it for yourself, have fun.
it's weird, I defo got a feeling that the Fetish distorted the highs, and on the vocal too. Feels a little disjointed to me and even... plonky? on drums, but agree on vocals could be interesting

Personally, the fetish works better if you want those creamier, warmer tones. Agreed that the first example for the drum track in fetish sounds waaay too chaotic. For quick responses, go for cla76. Sounds phenomenal on drums! Although I'm not a big fan of those digital artifacts poking out at the vocals for cla76
I may be mistaken but I always thought the fast/slow was other way around on waves one, that might be why you heard that pumping at first in the fetish but “not” the waves, cause really I think you had waves set to slow, I always thought the numbers were suppose to be representative of seconds, so the lesser would be faster and the higher number would be more seconds hence “slower” or longer, I could be wrong, never read manual and only tried, n def have never afforded the hardware lol, but I thought that’s how it sounded to me too, and I’ve seen other old school units where that was case, like knob would have generic number system, but when it comes to time like the seconds between attack and release I always thought less seconds was faster, and more was slower, so thought the numbering system on knobs worked same way🤷🏻♂️
Great to see a comparison of the two! However, I'm just a bit confused. You mention you're doing a fast attack and fast release on both compressors, but you have your CLA-76 knobs set to "7," which makes it actually the slowest attack and slowest release. The knobs should be the same as in the Fetish, where all the way to the left is fast, and all the way to the right is slow. I think that's why you saw that the Fetish was "more chaotic" and "pumping significantly more." It seems like you had both compressors doing opposite attacks and releases for the entire video.
@@SoundcastStudios You're totally right. My bad. I don't own the CLA plugin, but just researched that even the original 1176 has the fastest attack fully clockwise. Which I haven't seen on any other compressor until now. I use Logic and the 1176 emulation in there has the knobs in the opposite direction just like Fetish. My apologies, and thanks for clearing that up!
Does anyone know exactly what the 'slam' switch does on the Fetish? It seems like it has something to do with distortion but I'm not sure if it's on/off or if it's a high/low. If I don't want something smashed I usually turn it off even if I still like the compression. It still feels good, but I don't know if it's a high/low distortion or an on/off distortion switch.
Disclaimer: I don't actually knowing for sure, but maybe it emulates the "all-buttons-trick"? (all ratio buttons in). It gives you a more aggressive/distorted response, so maybe that's it?
Exactly. I own the hardware and Fetish with oversampling on is spot on. In a blind test I could not distinguish it from my hardware. The Waves sounds nothing like my hardware, just pure digital ugliness.

Also, with the Waves on the vocals you could hear more pumping (adding to the thickness) than with the AO version, which sounded more open to me. I personally liked the Waves compressors a little better for their character, but the AO better for its transparency.

The waves cla76 is not great. The Fetish is much better and sounds more like the hardware. I have stopped using waves CLA all together.

And de dr pepper setting is on the input(2 O click) and output(10 o cliock) setting. Not on the atack/ release.

FETISH adds more distortion to the cymbals. They sound more natural on the Waves.
Just got through testing Fetish in Bitwig on Drum Bus....man...that plugin to be FREE is Nice....IT BLOWS WAVES AWAY...lol

I know exactly what you mean by the flipped settings. It got to me a little at first too.
Its flipped but at least it's labeled "fast" "slow". The Waves "1 2 3 4 5 6 7" doesn't tell you anything if you're not familiar with a real 1176.
AO is the clear winner, and I can't even get Waves v14 plugins to install. My choice is clear.

Fetish is not Chaotic...LOL...its sounds more open....you gota use your ears with fetish...either you can hear the sweet spot or you cant...LOL

its audio, there is no objective winner. Just different sounds for different applications.
