FYI - GM does offer a replacement harness for this issue per the TSB is you don't feel comfortable soldering your repair.
I was going to say, I bet that harness section is available for a fair price.
also when I find one flex broken wire, there's usually multiple others which have multiple broken strands inside the jacket and ready to break. I did an early 200x vw jetta which had nearly every wire ready to break on drivers door, alarm going nuts randomly, self unlocking and locking, you name it it was doing it. it of course didn't have a plugs at both ends total pain and I was only supposed to be doing the brakes......
For sure, if there's one there's bound to be more!

Thank you! Took off my door panel and looked at my wiring harness and found exactly the same broken wires. Fixed it by following the same steps in the video. Thanks to you, I now have a working air bag system.
Thank you for this video, was exactly my truck’s problem. I followed your advice and soldered in extra wire so the repair would not be in the boot itself. This was just another of the long list of continual electrical problems I’ve had with this truck.

Seems like just in the last couple of years I have been finding more broken wires in door jams lately, I had a 2012 camaro with 2 broken wires but because there was no room for a good repair I ended up removing the door, was not a bad job. One of the wires was 12ga and I did like you, made the connections on each end with no splices in the jam. Great video

Always learn something, thanks Mike. When I heat up heat shrink, I use a heat gun. Just as fast, no open flame, no misdirected or stray flame that could damage other wires.
Hey Mark, I usually use my tiny butane torch...ran outa fuel :( ugh! I know that flame looked horrible....and the valve adjustment on the lighter wasn't working either...of course, haha!

64th. Good idea cutting the two end's. Nice fix.I had a Skoda with a connector problem. I used a 3 ohm resistor for variations of the problem. Code would not delete because I had to much resistance in the circuit. After an hour of pulling my hair out put in a 2 ohms resistor light went out. The code would not delete itself it had to be deleted and key recycled.
Hey D.D, thanks for watching! Thank goodness you made it before comment 65, lol! Sometimes you'll find an OHM spec in the service info. In this case the spec was 1.3 ohm to 6 ohms was "passing".

Mike, I've been out of the industry for a while, but back in the day, replacement of the SRS door subharness was the only MFG approved [warranty] method for repair of any SRS wiring issues, splicing was verbotten except for non-safety related systems, plus it introduces shop liability if the vehicle is subsequently involved in an accident with SRS deployment and [in this case] the driver's side seat belt tensioner fails to deploy, especially if the driver suffers bodily injury. Lawyer can claim unapproved/faulty,/failed repair by the shop. I am sure that splicing is now OK for SRS and other safety of life systems. Just had to say it. Keep the vids coming, good stuff as always. Also, when doing door jam flex broken wires, test instrument wiring [DVM test leads] is ultra flexible and usually becomes a permanent fix. Regular automotive grade wiring is not up to the repeated flexing of door opening and closing and will like result in a repeat failure later on. Probably why the OEM wire failed to start with. I always "fix 'em to keep 'em fixed" :) enough repeat business as it is.

The cold winter here in Wisconsin is hell in door joint area frozen wires to bend, lol, parochial 2356 has a good idea. Silicon insulated wire.

The S-series really went downhill in its later years, then ... the Colorado! A GM brainstorm, lol - made us dream of the S-series being back with all its quirks. I seriously think the engineer's wife ran off with a mechanic, so he was getting revenge ... 😂

Those versions of the Colorado/Canyon were engineered and designed by people who were in completely different rooms when they made/designed those trucks.

@@GoTechTraining Hi Mike I am hoping you are able to reply to my previous post. I have check engine light p0305. The car has a rough start and it shakes at idle and low speed. As the car is driven at higher speed shaking is low/gone. The weird part is when I erase the code. The car runs smooth for a while and then the light comes back and it drives rough again. Any help to resolving the issue or diagnosis based on your experience would be helpful. Thanks.

Hey Scuba422123, thanks for watching! Air bags are fun to play with in a controlled environment :) Ever see the video of the one under the couch cushion? Talk about some power. That's a 2 part question...First off, there's a high probability that the connector to the airbag has a shorting bar...therefore when disconnected it and hooked up to an ohm meter you are reading just across that tiny piece of metal in the connector, not the bag itself. Now, if you get past the shorting bar...or it doesn't have one...you're taking a risk hooking an ohm meter up. A 9V battery is enough to ignite an airbag...that's what the meter is using to push through the circuit to perform an ohm test. Personally I'm not a huge fan.

Yes it is very important to solder in any air bag wiring.
Unwanted resistance is no good in an airbag circuit!

The weird thing is Trailer manufacturers argue that wire nuts are to be used when you install or repair electric trailer brakes. Their reasoning is how brittle a joint is with solder or a butt connector. bottom line is don't join wires in a high flex area like your door. The area where the solder ends going to be a brittle area like you said.

Hey Mike i have watched all your channels and i have learned alot but i have to disagree with you on this one , i had a course on this many years ago and the instructor made it know to us just because your light is on does not mean the system is disabled if you look up on pro demand under description and operation and then air bag indicator it states the presence of a SIR system malfunction COULD result in non deployment of the air bags it does not say the system is disabled ,just wanted to share this with you ty
Hey Larry, that's a very valid point. I should have clarified that better in the video. I use a rule of thumb when it comes to the airbag light...if it's on it's broke, don't count it on to work. You are 100% right though, there are failures that will illuminate the light and still deploy the airbags. Thanks for calling it out. You and your instructor we're correct on this one!

I do love that about a lot of cars that they show repaired SRS are complete on their own but Honda Acura’s usually must be cleared to turn off light as they won’t self clear for some reason Honda designed in to it

@@GoTechTraining The same is true for some VW: on a 2014 Polo GTI a wiring fault stopped the ABS module from working and the airbag module flagged a U code for lost communication with the ABS. After the repair the telltale light only shut off after code clearing. Anyway, it's good practice to clear the codes after the (verified) repair. Thank you Mike.

When I started the repair I was shocked to realize it's aluminum wire. A flexible harness, for a safety critical component - and GM used aluminum wire. No wonder it fatigues and breaks. How many pennies did they even save?
Colorado seems to be a front runner for service shop design. Buy a Colorado? The mechanics will know you very well.
I was gonna laugh my butt off if you would have soldered the wiring together nicely and forgotten to run it back through the boot. I am 13+ years at a Chevy dealership and I have made a simple mistake thats laughable almost every way possible when doing wire repairs. Especially the old "make a beautiful solder in a tight spot and forget the dang heat shrink. Or the worst pain is when the heat shrink has a slight nick/tear/hole and it SPLITS WIDE OPEN when heating like a cheap pair of pants. Great video and awesome explanation. I personally like the Special J# Tool for applying the resistance as I don't have to worry about making a error on how much resistance to use. Can I get some information on the kit you used as it looks handy as heck for diagnosis on stuff like suspension systems with the electric shock/struts and air ride

I have an airbag light on 2012 Nissan Rogue for sometime. Any tutorial on that .

I have 2013 MDX. It has a misfire in cylinder 5. My error code is P0305. 240,000 kms on it
So I have done the following:
1) Swapped Coil and Plug from cylinder 5 to 6, code remained P0305
2) Tried Seafoam, Redline S1 and Mystery Motor Oil treatment in fuel tank and Engine, issue did not resolve.
3) I got compression test done and it showed low compression in Cylinder 5, 120 PSI vs 170 PSI in cylinder 4. Then I went to another auto body shop to do comparative compression test and it came compression is only 25% in cylinder 5 and approximately 75% in cylinder 6. Cylinder 1,4,2 were 100%, cylinder 3 was 92%.THESE GUYS WERE RIPOFFS. They charged for me ignition diagnosis when I told them it's not ignition related.
4. I took it to Acura and got valve adjustment done, they said it was loose intake valve. It made engine sound alot better and I felt it got power but misfire still shows in p0305.
I watched your video and have read forums. Now I am not sure what to try or do next. Any advice and help will be great.

Hey Saad Anwer, Sorry nothing for an airbag light on a Rogue. That year 3.5L had issues with piston rings lining up and burning a bunch of oil. What do the plugs look like after a few 1000 KM? Oil fouled or crusty??

@@GoTechTraining thansk for the reply. The oil looked ok. When I took out spark plug it looked fine no oil residue or anything. I asked Acura to check spark plug tube and it looked ok. I did get them to change valve cover seal

dont forget, no scotch locks either, you should link that test terminal kit too, i work at a chevy dealership, and we dont have a airbag load tool there, even though its a essential tool, it walked away in someones tool box.

I repaired 5 broken wires, but the airbag light is still on. What could it be and what should I do?
I saw on forum that I should disconnect the battery and pull the airbag fuse. Should I do that or does that even matter?

Hey Carl, great question...so if you look up the codes you'll find the code set criteria tied to resistance values. If I recall correctly, the codes would set at under 1.3 ohms and over 6 ohms of resistance.

What type of wire did you use to fix it? Is it just primary wire?
Yes, primary wire that matches the gauge your repairing
Good job Mike. Like you, I did the same with the wire, replacing it with a length of new wire. Interesting "torch" you've got there to shrink the tubing! LOL
I used a small propane bottle with an equally small torch end, not the larger Berz-O-Matic torch. I could adjust the flame accordingly.
Air Bag systems used to be easy to repair, now with all the latest and greatest they have, like my 2020 RAV4, I don't know.
Question Mike.
What is the life span of the air bag assembly itself? 15 years? 20 years? I wasn't able to find out.

I'm not sure if other manufacturers observe this timeline, but I believe Volvo says 10 years on their airbags. I've never known anyone to replace airbags as part of a "10 year service" but I remember reading something to that effect.
All wires are good now, I still am getting a code saying loop voltage low I tried 2 different pretensioners and tried clearing the codes it just flash's and stays on PLEASE HELP

I have the issue in both door and I also get voltage errors to both doors so I want to belive it’s the same scenario
I’m back and have found out all wires on both sides have broke off they are fixed but left out 2 on each side a grey and black and I don’t know what they do
For me personally, the gray and black wires that were torn caused the radio not to shut off when the key was out.

HEY MIKE. Always great info shared with us in your videos. I like your resistor test. Question....if the code was for a front impact sensor, could you still substitute the sensor for that same resistor for testing purposes, or is that only for pretensioners? Thank you and have a great weekend Mike.
Hey Mike, thanks man! I don't see why you couldn't. Just make sure you get the size right...would hate to accidentally deploy them. I guess that's the difference here, crash sensor is an input to the SRS the pretensioner is an output. You'll be substituting values in the SRS module for an impact input. If you do it wrong there could be major consequences.

How did you know what size resistor to use as a substitute load? I would have expected a much larger value. My test light is about 10 ohms.... Do you think that would have worked?
Hey RJC3po, per the service information. I found that the specs for the circuit to fail were under 1.3 ohms and over 6 ohms. In that case, no the test light would not have worked.

Where is the yellow
Connector on the single cabs?
Since the single cab models don't have rear doors this wiring harness will not exist.
There still could be a connection issue at the seat belt pretensioner, this were the seat belt retracts in to.

Interesting Video and I would have done the same with the exception of the heat shrink heating method. Its also interesting noting your comment below about a replacement harness. I have no problem with a solder repair in these situations but given it was for a safety critical system, I would probably need to think twice about making the repair. What did the service data say?

@@GoTechTraining Mike, my comment was more about the situation where the vehicle was involved in an accident and an investigation noted that the repair had been made, irrespective of it was a contributing factor or not. The real issue here is a poor design, but I guess all manufacturers do it.
I'm not sure what would happen in that event Paul. The repair is properly made, properly sealed, and should have no long term effect on the system.

Are you sure that the airbag system is completely disabled when the light is on? Isn't it that in case of an accident while airbag light is on, the system is "blindly" firing all airbags "just in case" instead of none?
Hey Blocki, that depends on the system and the fault. I should have probably clarified that better. Many failures will disable the air bags from firing because the SRS module doesn't have enough info.
