Thank you so much for posting these. I'm 51 and heavy; I went to the climbing gym for the first time this past Wednesday and I was feeling a little daunted by all these young, super fit people. I've been telling myself "Nah, you're fine, you can do this" but there's been a voice in the back of my head telling me that maybe I couldn't. It's wonderful to see that yes, I absolutely can.
Sounds like you already did do it. The hard part is over, just do it again and again and stop looking at other climbers focus on your next foot or hand hold. 😉
I’m 51 as well, climbed for over 30 years. My only (completely unsolicited) advice would be to take it really slow and work up your strength. Injury will set you back, and at our age they seem to take forever to heal. Whilst climbing I’ve had two knee meniscus tears the last 3 years, took me off the wall for a large chunk of that time. Before that I had finger injuries that set me back a year. It really sucks to be deprived of doing something I love.

And along comes this guy who's twice my size and does it easily and shows me how. It made me feel much better about myself and showed that climbing isn't just for the 0% body fat, campusing, shirt off show offs

This year, 2022, I learned trad climbing and did some spectacular leads in Wales and the Peak District, as well as getting out to Anglesey and spending a considerable amount of my free time doing sport and bouldering, both indoors and at locations within short reach of Manchester. Absolute legend and a great advocate not only for the sport, but for folks that are a bit older and/or larger that have been put off from trying. I love that and I really wish to see more diversity in that respect. Can you imagine the strength this chap would have if one day he woke up and realised that he's just shed all that weight overnight somehow?
Fuck yeah. I love seeing people like him getting active. You're never too old or fat to do something to improve your health. What a fantastic and inspiring guy. I'm glad he enjoys it too. He's an absolute king.
I'm from Germany / Saxony and we have a lot of old folks who still climb, some of them incredible hard boulders and lead routes. Regarding body weight, i see more and more people who wouldn't be considered sporty but they come regularly and crush it on the wall. Imo the mind is what's deciding if you can climb or not. So keep on trying and sending routes!
I really appreciate you posting this as I am also a large person inclined. It's nice to see that there are other people out there using this as their way to get out and be active. One tip though the background music at points get so loud that you can't understand what he's saying for the music
Way to go Gordon! Rock Climbing is one of the best activities you can do, physically, mentally, and socially. It is a whole body and mind exercise. I started five years ago and wished I had gotten into it back in the '70s. Yep, I'm an older bloke as well, but no longer fat! Mind you, climbing doesn't help you lose weight, but it is a great reason and motivation to lose weight because climbing is so much easier when you weigh less! It does toughen you up though, again, physically and mentally. I have introduced a lot of people to climbing, helped them improve, and helped a few get their lead climbing pass. It is such a rewarding activity in so many ways. One of the best things is to get someone who is scared of heights to climb and see them develop confidence over time, even if they don't completely lose their fear. Falling, or failing, is just part of the process. Mind you, I mostly climb on ropes, so I have further to fall, but my belayer catches me. 🙂 Keep up the great work and share the spirit.
So Wise! Never too old, never too fat or whatsoever for change. Just do it and have fun with no expectations. That positive spirit will reflect to others.
I agree with his views on the benefits. I started out just before COVID probably close to 300 lb (20 stone?). Down to 11-ish and hitting the 6a climbs more regularly. People are, for the most part, very welcoming in this community!
Wow. This is so fantastic to see. I used climb (traditional technical) 6a-6b.but that was 35 years and more than 100 pounds ago. I’ve been thinking of getting back into climbing at 56, and thinking I should probably lose at least 50 pounds before I even try. After seeing this, bugger it, I might just go tomorrow! Really inspiring!
Go for it. Take it easy at the start, traverse, stick to the easy climbs while it all floods back. As long as you build it up sensibly you should be able to avoid injury. Enjoy 🙌
Excellent. We look forward to seeing you. We have a centre in Kinning Park "The Newsroom" that includes a kids climbing wall and The Prop Store in Maryhill where this was filmed. You can start bouldering without doing a course. You'll just need to complete some forms online (before you visit) or at reception on your first visit: www.theclimbingacademy.com/homepage/forms/
Started climbing outdoor (Cali) in February of 2021. I was 45. My first rappel was all of 20 feet on Amazon gear and a few UA-cam videos. Felt like a badass in my camos and issued combat boots. 18 months (and a lot of money) later, me and my bro are climbing multi pitch trad at some of the most awesome crags in California. FUCK YEAH! The greatest thing about climbing is the people. I have never seen an asshole rock climber. The culture embraces everyone. If you climb, then you are one of us. KEEP SENDING!
Oh man, I've always been very conscious about my weight. Lots of people tell me it doesn't show, but 120 kgs is still quite a bit. I haven't done climbing very long, and it's very true the activity is a truly full-body exercise. Both when it comes to heart rate (or maybe that's just adrenaline?) but mostly my grip. It feels great knowing there are other heavier folks out there making progress and having fun, that's what I wanted to say.
This is really inspiring and encouraging. I'm an overweight 50 year old and have been thinking for a while about getting into climbing/bouldering but was wondering if it really is for me as whenever I look for any information about it, it's always being presented by 20-30 somethings in great shape so you just associate it as a young, fit persons activity. I work as a solar panel installer so I'm pretty used to climbing scaffolds and clambering around on roofs at height but next year I'm becoming more office based. I don't do any exercise other than that from working and a bit of walking and I have a sweet tooth hence my being overweight. I am concerned that once I become office based that I become too sedentary and my weight just piles on even more. I don't really enjoy sports as such and I really don't want to get injured. This vid has encouraged me to check out my local climbing wall. If nothing else, I won't be the only fat old climber who's had a go. Many thanks!
Oh you should definitely give it a try. It’s very tough at first, but most people’s problem is grip-strength, you might not have that if you’re used to climbing roofs. Enjoy..
Yeah, try it. Mostly nice people in the climbing comunity. I am also in the 110kg (240lb) category at 6'. And I am not even the biggest guy in my gym. No one cares...
@@gordonrobb Just for fun, search for "Dennis Kohlruss bouldern"! He is germanys strongest man and weighs 380lb at 6.4. He recently made a video when he tryed bouldering for the first time. He did quite well and is planing to do it regulary in the future.
I’m 50 and have just started climbing. There is a real mix of ages and it is a nice inclusive scene. It’s a great workout and I’m in better shape already. Go for it!
Dude, I weighed 107kg at some point then I picked up skating which did more harm then good because my body was a wreck, then I started bouldering. I'm having a blast and am 89/91kg~ish. Everytime I grow stronger it is easier to climb, but when I lose weight it's also easier to climb! Overhang was the worst but is doable now! GLHF
I’m 56 and overweight, and I have been watching Magnus. I used to climb when I was much, much younger. I was so discouraged thinking I would have to lose 40 kilos just to be in the “normal” range. I thought that was what I had to do to climb again. That seemed impossible. Thank you for this video. It has been so inspiring to me that I don’t need to wait to start climbing again.
Thanks for sharing. This is exactly what we wanted to do; encourage people that it's not too late and that you don't have to already be some kind of perfect shape to get active. There are too many perfect bodies on social media making us all feel bad. Real life has so much more variation. Good luck.
I started climbing about a year ago. I'm 43 and not particularly athletic. You're exactly right, it's an amazing full body workout that is vastly more fun than any traditional gym session.
He is so right with the technique training. I am small and also not the thinnest person but you can overcome so much with technique when lacking strength. I love this sport, it helps my back and is so rewarding
Really love this. Just shows that you can do anything you put your mind to and you shouldn’t let society dictate what it is that makes you feel good. I got my parents into climbing a few years ago and they absolutely love it. The three of us have been going to the climbing gym every Wednesday since 2019
this gave me confidence! i am also a family guy and far from being fit and i was doubting i can do this til i saw this vid. nice! i really do wanna pursue this hobby
The way the music was going at the end I half expected it to tell me he had passed away. I've recently started climbing and can agree with everything he said. It's much more fun exercising like this. It doesn't feel like you are exercising until you reach the bottom and you realise how high your heart rate is and how pumped your forearms are.
Keep it up people, dont be intimidated by being in worse shape than other people at the gym, when I first got into working out I was surprised to see how positive the "fitness community" could be, everyone has to start somewhere and the people who go around making fun of others for trying to improve their health are typically discovered quickly and treated as pariahs.
I'm a bit late to the party with my comment, but hey-ho Just wanted to say thank you. This video has flipped a switch in my head to make me realise I CAN actually do this! I joined my experienced friends on my first ever bouldering experience earlier this week and, to my surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed myself! I'm 6ft1, 28 years old and weigh as many stone as I have in years and struggled the entire time, but enjoyed it so much. After getting home and thinking about it over the last few days, I convinced myself that actually, people like me just aren't meant to do bouldering and had decided I'd never try it again. Gordon's story has changed that for me and I've realised that I CAN fight through my morbid obesity, my BPD and my anxiety and I really feel like this could be the one thing I've needed to change my life for the better. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. -Tom
Hey Tom, We're so glad you messaged and so glad you saw Gordon's video. You can totally do this. Gordon is a very familiar friendly face in our centres. Climbing is not just for skinny, fit folk. Anyone can be part of the climbing community and can use it for whatever they want - whether that's just moving, getting fit, developing skills, working on confidence etc. If you need a regular hit of encouragement, follow Gordon on Instagram (instagram.com/fatoldclimber). You might also find our seminar on mindset/anxiety of interest ua-cam.com/video/mTVzT7s3-FQ/v-deo.html. Good luck!
I have been skinny all my life. I am not very strong but I also don't weigh much. Sometimes there are overweight climbers at my gym and they always impress me a lot. They must be so strong!
This actually gives me a lot of hope. I genuinely have always been thrilled watching rock climbers because I yearn for that freedom of movement. But being a wrestler and being over 300lbs I figured it was essentially incompatible with my body type. This dashes those misconceptions. Now I for sure want to try my hand at this.
Hi This is so good to hear. It's exactly what we wanted this video to do. It's so often only when you see someone else do something that you realise that you can too. There are so many styles within climbing, high or steep, low or balancey and even traverses. All of them require different techniques that it's fun to develop. There's definitely something for everyone - and if there is not at your local gym, ask for more variation!
@@the-climbing-academy You are exactly right on the notion that seeing someone else do something makes it feel infinitely more achievable. Good to hear there is a wide plethora of focuses as well.
Since I do bouldering, I don't want to go back to regular gym to lift weights, climbing keep me in good shape and the social aspect of this activity is so good. I am 50 and I use to climb and talk with people of any age, women or men, no matter we are there for the same reason: having fun and push ourselves to find a way to get to the top.
I love this video. It's so heartwarming! But climbing doesn't stay in the gym or in the mountains, everything and everyone that makes climbing great showed up here in the comments section.
Agree with everything you say. I am in my 50s and have a bit of a belly and my son introduced me to bouldering and it is the best thing I have ever done for health! The belly is still there but I am so much stronger and even in the South of England everyone is so friendly (yes, it's true!).
More power to him! I love how inclusive climbing is, though I get nervous seeing heavy people bouldering - I witnessed a big guy snap his leg falling off a top out. It's just a lot of extra stress to put on a fall. Stick to lower grades so you can downclimb, work on your technique and let the fitness catch up.

Hoping to do that, just not overnight :)
Wow! This is inspiring . I'm doing my first introductory climb this Wednesday
Awesome. Enjoy it.
Fuck yeah. I love seeing people like him getting active. You're never too old or fat to do something to improve your health. What a fantastic and inspiring guy. I'm glad he enjoys it too. He's an absolute king.
This guy has an amazing attitude, absolutely inspiring
I'm from Germany / Saxony and we have a lot of old folks who still climb, some of them incredible hard boulders and lead routes. Regarding body weight, i see more and more people who wouldn't be considered sporty but they come regularly and crush it on the wall. Imo the mind is what's deciding if you can climb or not. So keep on trying and sending routes!
Very enjoyable to listen to and watch this fellow.
I'm glad he found his place, what a guy!
I really appreciate you posting this as I am also a large person inclined. It's nice to see that there are other people out there using this as their way to get out and be active. One tip though the background music at points get so loud that you can't understand what he's saying for the music
Fantastic. I love you, Gord!
Keep up the great work and share the spirit.
Climbing has changed my life, too. I love it and I love the welcoming and friendly culture that so often is found in the people who do it ❤
Good stuff. I need to get my lazy arse back to bouldering. Loved it.
Do it!
Excellent weight loss.
Congratulations on your achievement that is an amazing weight loss xx
Good for you, brother! Inspirational! Take care.
What an uplifting story. Glad you found it and enjoy it!
"Uplifting"! 😆
What a guy. Exact attitude and person we need in climbing! Looking forward to seeing you smash those high 6's and 7a!
Enjoy 🙌
Love the video! shows how including climbing can be.
This is the most positive and inspiring thing that i have seen from long time. I'm super inspired. Thank You
Cheers
Just realised this is in my city. Will be checking this out with the boy.
@@the-climbing-academy Thank you very much. That’s perfect.
Do it. It’s a great thing to do with kids as a shared activity. Say hello if you see me in there.
@@gordonrobb I will do fella, I completed me and the boy’s waivers form yesterday ✊🏻
Truly an inspiration to the rest of us fat old guys! Great video!
It feels great knowing there are other heavier folks out there making progress and having fun, that's what I wanted to say.
from 107 to 89 atm, it gets easier everytime you grow stronger and when you lose weight! double dipping!
Good luck.
Such a nice funny guy, What an amazing video, thank you!
A great perspective on climbing regardless of weight and age!
This is refreshing. I wouldn't have given up climbing if I'd seen this sooner.
You can always get back into it.
Way to go lad. That's amazing. Good for you!
What heartwarming story! Really well shot and edited, great job Sam 👌
Awesome video. Love this man.
Music was a bit to loud.
I started climbing about a year ago. I'm 43 and not particularly athletic. You're exactly right, it's an amazing full body workout that is vastly more fun than any traditional gym session.
Yes! Keep it up :)
He is so right with the technique training. I am small and also not the thinnest person but you can overcome so much with technique when lacking strength. I love this sport, it helps my back and is so rewarding
We all agree that climbing is the best thing ever come to our life
Great video - background music is a bit loud, would be better if it was toned down a bit.
Well,im gonna try it Mr. Robb! you totally inspired me.
Thanks. You'll enjoy it.
Really love this. Just shows that you can do anything you put your mind to and you shouldn’t let society dictate what it is that makes you feel good.
I got my parents into climbing a few years ago and they absolutely love it. The three of us have been going to the climbing gym every Wednesday since 2019
That’s great to hear.
Superb!
I absolutely love him!
Keep crushing! Hopefully you get to 7a at some point
Love this kind of content!
Brilliant going, he is well enjoying the climbing buzz. Nice one go steady
Thanks for sharing I want to try it soon ❤
this gave me confidence! i am also a family guy and far from being fit and i was doubting i can do this til i saw this vid. nice! i really do wanna pursue this hobby
Awesome. And great for something to do with the kids (assuming that’s what you mean by ‘family guy’).
Wait, unless you meant looking like the guy from Family Guy 😂
Do it!
This man is so so precious like just protect this man
😂
Thank you for this! Love to see more videos with us bigger people doing awesome things (and not just to lose weight!).
That's a great point.
I'm a bit late to the party with my comment, but hey-ho
Just wanted to say thank you.
Good luck!
I love your words. In climbing we are all equal
Terrific, I too fell instantly in love with climbing, climb on
He's a fabulous story teller.
"It's right there in the name"
That's the best response to the process of failure climbers experience.
😂
Since I do bouldering, I don't want to go back to regular gym to lift weights, climbing keep me in good shape and the social aspect of this activity is so good. I am 50 and I use to climb and talk with people of any age, women or men, no matter we are there for the same reason: having fun and push ourselves to find a way to get to the top.
Love this! As a heavier climber it's nice to see someone closer to by build represented :D
I love this video. It's so heartwarming! But climbing doesn't stay in the gym or in the mountains, everything and everyone that makes climbing great showed up here in the comments section.
Awesome! Gordon is so inspiring. Keep crushing!❤🧗🏽♀️❤🧗🏽♂️❤
Agree with everything you say. I am in my 50s and have a bit of a belly and my son introduced me to bouldering and it is the best thing I have ever done for health! The belly is still there but I am so much stronger and even in the South of England everyone is so friendly (yes, it's true!).
wholesome and great watch!
Thanks for being an inspiration for the future me!
Awesome stuff Gordon
Thanks.
Right On!
He is funny too
What a video that gave me hope
Thank you
I started at 47. I've got a couple of V5s that were my style. Hope to get some V7 before I'm 55.
Fantastic, I really must video more.
Great video!
60 and V4-5 climber. Probably the oldest at my gym! Never too late :)
When the slo-mo fadeout happened, I was expecting it to say "In Loving Memory"
Haha, you’re not the first to say that.
