    I also had a bad accident as described here. What is astonishing is that you do it 1000 or even more times correctly (you check and you doublecheck always) and then one day it also happens to you. Every thing that can go wrong goes wrong one day. That is what I am afraid of always. One can really make the most incredible mistakes. This not only when you go climbing. Thanks for sharing.

    When you’re too busy watching what your mind is doing instead of using your eyes to watch what’s in front of you is the moment you’re a dangerous climber. I know in this modern world with all the distractions it’s easy to forget, and most people don’t even know they can stop watching their mind and use their senses, but the majority of belay failures happen in the moments you’re distracted by watching the tv show your mind is making rather then whats going on in the moment. If it’s not happening in front of you, it shouldn’t be happening inside of you. Just be present and safety is always easy.

    'm 50 years old. In ok shape but not a great athlete by any means. Never climbed, never been to a climbing gym. For some odd reason, I had a dream about being in a climbing gym earlier this week and now I'm researching gyms and watching beginner bouldering vids, but I have a lot of doubt and some fear (of hurting myself, and of embarrassing myself). This is a very inspiring video, thanks. I think I'll at least do a tour of my local gym and see where it goes from there.

      Hi, I'm afraid you're incorrect - there were two full days of setting at The Newsroom and two full days of setting at The Prop Store every week in December (except Christmas week) - that's 16 whole days of new problems and routes. You can see the weekly setting schedule online. This includes details about what section has been reset: www.theclimbingacademy.com/setting/. This info also appears on the Setting News board that is facing you when you enter The Newsroom. Just ask the staff if you want pointed towards this week's latest problems.

    • @gurumedful
      @gurumedful 11 місяців тому

      You're right, @@the-climbing-academy, having looked at the dates on griptonite it wasn't the whole of December. For propstore there was no setting for three weeks from December 20th to January 9th For newsroom there was no setting for three weeks from December 22nd to January 12th It just felt like the whole of December because there wasn't anything new during the holiday.

      @@gurumedful Hi, I looked into this with the team. There were two weeks of no setting - Christmas week and the first week of Jan: this is to allow the setting team to take some much needed holidays. We used this down time to refurbish The Newsroom hold store and install a brand new Ultrasonic Cleaner and Spraybooth (which you should be able to see the positive effects of on the wall already). There was a reel on Instagram showing the effects. Anyway - the setting rota is always visible online if you're ever curious in future.

    Great video, and great to see the face behind things. There are a few issues right now (which I'm sure would be reported in the survey). TCA could really do with robust method of giving feedback abuot routes. the google doc and/or feedback on Griptonite just does not work. How about somethink like an email address for route feedback? Also, regarding new climbers, we introduce a lot of people to climbing through meetup, and it's not uncommon for them to find some of the purples too hard, a problem that has increased dramatically since the Yellows were removed.

    • @the-climbing-academy
      @the-climbing-academy 11 місяців тому

      Hi Gordon, feedback via a Google form and via Griptonite are the best way for our team to receive, analyse and address setting issues. If comments came via an email only one person would see them and they are much harder to refer back to over time. When you fill out the setting feedback form, all comments are visible in a clearly logged Google sheet. This makes it really easy to spot patterns, to review frequency, to check back over time and to make it shareable with multiple member of the team. This is super robust and great for management. Griptonite is incredibly useful as we can see feedback on exact problems - something that would be really hard to replicate via email. It's also a great place to aggregate feedback on certain problems. I will make sure your feedback about the purples reaches the team. Thanks

    • @the-climbing-academy
      @the-climbing-academy 11 місяців тому

      P.S. I should add that just because you won't get a reply when submitting feedback to the form, doesn't mean we aren't listening. We very much are!

    • @gordonrobb
      @gordonrobb 11 місяців тому

      @@the-climbing-academy I take your point about accessibily at TCA's end, but the google form is not very accessible. Going through Instagram (link in bio) which is the only way I know to find it, it's nubmer 50 on the list of links. I tried to find it on Website, but couldn't. Then wen you fill out the form, it asks a lot of questions before you get to the 'what do y ou want to tell us'. I would be very surporised if all the people who have feedback to give you, even bother.

    • @gordonrobb
      @gordonrobb 11 місяців тому

      @@the-climbing-academy Oh, not looking for a reply. But one example of a time I used it was because there were a few of the new climbs that had not been put on griptonite. Haveing tried speaking to someone at reception, I was told to use the Feedback form. The climbs didn't get added to griptonite for nearly 3 weeks, and I'm fairly sure that was only after I emailed someone. Which some people may not have an issue with I suppose. Anyway. Enough ranting from me. Great video :)

    The gym I climb at had a history of people not clipping in and having accidents. They made changes to the belay gates. They replaced the dark blue ones with bright yellow ones to assist the climber in seeing it. They also replaced the small gates with long ones that make it very difficult to climb without clipping in.

    • @the-climbing-academy

  • @mireilledalpeprazeres8614

    Climbing is the best sport all around, you are right, climbing does so much for our overall health, form and strength. My husband and I started at 64, and I'm scared of heights, but not while on the wall. We didn't know this sport was an option for us! when we visited our daughter in Europe, they introduced us to it. Back in Canada, we entered a climbing gym that week and started. A bit of bouldering until we realised when we fell unexpectedly, we dropped like a rock, fast and hard, our reaction time is not up to par, so we only top rope. But if you're single, that is difficult but some gyms have self belay devices which is good. We're 69 and we climb twice a week. Strength can be a problem for some routes but we're not 6ft under so we consider ourselves lucky. On "high-gravity-days" we'll concentrate on technique and form on easy routes, it's always interesting and always learning. Our grades are at 5.7 to an easy 5.9 (5a-5c/ UK 4b-4c-). We try not to go by grades, as it stops people from trying. If we don't make it, we don't make it, a lot of fun trying. Old injuries rear their ugly heads for me, shoulders and hips, which forces me to slow down until I get better. In Winter we downhill & X-country ski; then in the Spring we go back to climbing, and some others activities, but climbing is twice a week. Hopefully we can do this for a very long time. Bravo to all climbers.

    For a while I did bouldering very rarely because I didn't think it was for me, being overweight and not having immediate success. But about a year ago I was bored and had a friend that would invite me to climb with him, after doing it consistently for a few times I was noticing that I actually really liked it. Still, I didn't take it too seriously because I thought it was an activity for skinny people only, I kept using the excuse that I was too fat to do certain problems. One day while climbing, I saw this obese (not overweight, I mean legit obese) guy with massive forearms start climbing. He was able to do problems that I struggled with, and by then I was pretty overweight but not obese. After I saw him climb a few times, I couldn't use my weight as an excuse anymore so I stopped believing it was the main obstacle. The guy doesn't know me, I don't go to that bouldering gym anymore and I never heard the guy's name, but he was an inspiration to me. And after climbing some more, I see people that look like grandparents whom are doing problems that I can't so my age isn't an issue either. I've got nerve pain that makes it difficult to go for long stretches of time (not from bouldering, something unrelated), but recently I'm learning pain just means I have to pace myself better with certain problems, it's not a hard cap like I used to believe. All this to say that I'm willing to bet a lot of excuses people come up with are ultimately things we've convinced ourselves are more important than they really are. My weight, age, and pain does make my recovery and growth slower than young and fit folks but it doesn't mean I'm incapable. I used excuses as a front for not throwing myself into something 100% out of fear, and even then I haven't reached that 100% point yet. But man, as I keep bouldering I get this urge to improve, solve problems that I couldn't do before, do more exercises to build up strength, etc. Now that I know my excuses aren't valid and my love for bouldering grows, I want to see how far I can go. I'm here now because I was willing to let go of my excuses after paying attention to others and entertaining the possibility that maybe I'm wrong about myself. I hope this comment and video can inspire others that maybe they're wrong about themselves too.

I’ve been thinking of getting back into climbing at 56, and thinking I should probably lose at least 50 pounds before I even try. After seeing this, bugger it, I might just go tomorrow! Really inspiring!

      Go for it. Take it easy at the start, traverse, stick to the easy climbs while it all floods back. As long as you build it up sensibly you should be able to avoid injury. Enjoy 🙌

    I'm a bit late to the party with my comment, but hey-ho Just wanted to say thank you. This video has flipped a switch in my head to make me realise I CAN actually do this! I joined my experienced friends on my first ever bouldering experience earlier this week and, to my surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed myself! I'm 6ft1, 28 years old and weigh as many stone as I have in years and struggled the entire time, but enjoyed it so much. After getting home and thinking about it over the last few days, I convinced myself that actually, people like me just aren't meant to do bouldering and had decided I'd never try it again. Gordon's story has changed that for me and I've realised that I CAN fight through my morbid obesity, my BPD and my anxiety and I really feel like this could be the one thing I've needed to change my life for the better. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. -Tom

      Hey Tom, We're so glad you messaged and so glad you saw Gordon's video. You can totally do this. Gordon is a very familiar friendly face in our centres. Climbing is not just for skinny, fit folk. Anyone can be part of the climbing community and can use it for whatever they want - whether that's just moving, getting fit, developing skills, working on confidence etc. If you need a regular hit of encouragement, follow Gordon on Instagram (instagram.com/fatoldclimber). You might also find our seminar on mindset/anxiety of interest ua-cam.com/video/mTVzT7s3-FQ/v-deo.html. Good luck!

    This actually gives me a lot of hope. I genuinely have always been thrilled watching rock climbers because I yearn for that freedom of movement. But being a wrestler and being over 300lbs I figured it was essentially incompatible with my body type. This dashes those misconceptions. Now I for sure want to try my hand at this.

      Hi This is so good to hear. It's exactly what we wanted this video to do. It's so often only when you see someone else do something that you realise that you can too. There are so many styles within climbing, high or steep, low or balancey and even traverses. All of them require different techniques that it's fun to develop. There's definitely something for everyone - and if there is not at your local gym, ask for more variation!

      @@the-climbing-academy You are exactly right on the notion that seeing someone else do something makes it feel infinitely more achievable. Good to hear there is a wide plethora of focuses as well.
