It’s so wonderful that she can feel young again through climbing. Not only is she inspiring, but so is the community around her. Sometimes it is difficult to break down barriers and just be a friend to someone, regardless of age or ability. Here’s to many more years of climbing, Auntie!!
I was 39 when I went on a hiking tour in New Zealand. There I met a man from Israel who was in his sixties, who simply told me that he was in good shape due to doing a lot of hiking and cycling around the year when the weather permits and going indoor climbing at other times. It was after this talk that I returned home and tried indoor climbing for the first time. Before that I thought I am too old to start this kind of activity. I'm 45 now, and I've been doing climbing since then regularly. All these restrictions are really in our head first, now I know that)
That's actually quite the good progression. A lot of young people don't have the determination to reach that level in such a time frame. Keep crushing. :)
Too bad it took 4 years, I promise it only gets more fun from here! And more time consuming... Till it inevitably consumes your existence. Anyways have fun!
I'm nowhere close to her age just yet, but her mentioning that climbing helped her back pain reminded me.. I have fibromyalgia and the frequency of my flares has SIGNIFICANTLY decreased and my overall daily pain has decreased as well since I started climbing about a year ago. Me and my boyfriend host "top-rope tuesday's" at our local gym and we get a fair amount of people around or past their 40's/50's. After just a few sessions they often report decreased pain from older injuries or even arthritis (obviously, do take care if you are to climb with an injury). Climbing has been known to help with mental pain as well, we hear this most often. I just love it so much and I love hearing stories like our Aunty Dolly here

When I was in my early 20's, I lived in South Korea. There's a lot of good outdoor climbing there, and a lot of retired older Koreans who crush. One weekend I was climbing with some friends at a crag outside of Ulsan, and we hopped on a 12b with fixed draws that was pretty tough - I only got a few draws up. This old Korean lady, who must've been in her mid to late 50's, was telling me how to climb it, and I ignored her. After we got off, she got on the route and proceeded to turn to us and tell us all the beta AS SHE WAS CLIMBING IT. Humbling.

I've got an older bloke who climbs at a bunch of the local bouldering gyms, and he always comes in the coolest looking leotards. He was smashing out V7s when I started, but nowadays he likes to do circuits at a lower intensity. I genuinely think he's the smoothest static climber in the gym - he moves sooo slowly and gracefully, and he never looks tired on and off the wall 😩 it's like he's got glue on his hands....and then at the end he'll do campus circuits to cool down 😂😭 puts the rest of us to shame hahahahaha I don't think I've ever seen his footwork slip, or seen him not do a downclimb, and he's always teaching us about static technique and body mechanics hahahahaha hope I grow up to climb like him....can't even imagine how beastly his grip strength must be to hold onto the wall so long on each climb

Started climbing in 1973, I'm 68 now. I routinely lead 11+ outdoors (I suck in the gym), and occasionally get up the odd 12. The last 15 years has not been the greatest healthwise - lumbar spine issues mean no more real bouldering. Three level cervical fusion (you don't want to know), and now in cancer remission. The only good thing is losing weight during cancer treatment I'm finally down that 15 pounds I always wanted off in middle age! Power wise I'm weak as a kitten compared to my prime, but my mental game has mostly made up for it. Wished I knew then, when I could easily do one arm pullups, what I know now.
