  • Week three on Amy's ambitious project to make bathroom tiles for the chateau from scratch and Marc decides to get involved. Unfortunately he brings the cat too...
We are Marc, Amy, Clement and Juliette, a French-English family restoring a 33 room medieval chateau and huge estate in southern France. Follow our award-winning, historically-sensitive restorations and our journey towards self-sufficiency and sustainability, with plenty of laughter along the way.
AD: This week we are partnering with online language school Lingoda. Amy has been taking much-needed French lessons with them and is so happy with her progress. Choose lessons at almost any time of the day or night with real French teachers and just 3-5 other students in the class. The syllabus is set by Lingoda and you are encouraged to make regular and consistent progress with the motivation of real teachers and classmates. Lingoda have a very special sprint challenge, where you can sign up to complete 30 or 60 classes within a specific time frame, and if you complete the challenge you get 50% or 100% cash back. Seems like some pretty good motivation. Sign up with try.lingoda.com/ChroniclesOfR... and use the exclusive discount code AMYSPRINT if you like what you see. You might just find yourself in a class with Amy one day!

Or incorporate them once in a while secretly in your formal design so people (and children) will have fun hunting for them. Surely there’s a tradition of hidden gargoyles and angels to draw upon? Any way, envisioning one of Marc’s silly little wise faces peering through the leaves is giving me pleasure, whether it’s done actually or not.
Much love to you both and thanks to you for demonstrating how one can fully own one’s dear project and make room and still be protective of the vision.
Wow, Amy. I mean it. Wow. Some day maybe you can talk about your flexibility and precision. Seems a remarkable dance. You seem to me to choose enormously creative projects, go at it full tilt enjoying the research and undaunted by challenges, and then, somehow not get slammed by the need to control or have it be perfect.
I think these must be attributes of a creative being who knows how to enjoy herself. I’d love to hear your thoughts one day.❤

I have been watching many of the DIY Vlogs this past 2 months while I am waiting for surgery. I started breaking the rules in DIY over 65 years ago and really enjoy seeing others that are willing to do the same. I so enjoy seeing the two of you also breaking the boundaries of several crafts. Please keep having fun with your projects and allowing us to see how you do this.

Might I suggest, when scraping the tile, start in the middle to avoid mixing the colors. This only would pertain to the experiments where you are currently combining different techniques on one tile. When you're at the final stage & working with the end product you probably will want to scrape end to end. Experiments is just to avoid contamination of tests. Your dedication is impressive & obvious of your archaeological training! The endless data & meticulous samples, Just Wow! All that & 3 kids to keep track of (Mark's the 3rd)💖

Instead of carving all the tiles, why not make a stamp to use out of wood and rubber. Would save so much time and not bits to pick off. Love artistry but the more details makes the work a much longer project. I really liked the green tiles you made earlier as true handcrafted tiles were imperfect but that adds to the beauty and the artisan look

    This is fascinating! ♥️♥️♥️
The cat is hilarious - sweet face and a mischievous soul, encouraged by mischievous Marc.
    I’m wondering:
    A) Will you be sanding the ones that are a bit lumpy?
    B) Is it possible to lightly sand the lumpy ones before you do the scrafito, so that the initial texture is smoother. The Greek vases 🏺 look quite smooth, so there must be a method.
    C) Would it be possible to grind the clay more smoothly, or perhaps use a sieve, to start out with a more consistent powder? I’ve been working on landscaping in my yard the past few days, and 4”/10cm down I hit almost pure clay, and with the drought the past couple years I’ve been having to crush it in order to change the slope of the space (in an effort to retain more water and not have it simply roll off to the street on the rare occasions we get rain). The purest lumps are literally rock hard, but when I apply steady pressure when placing the lump between a steel trowel and a flat concrete block, it looks like a flattened lump of clay, but when I brush it into the area I’m working on, it becomes a fine powder (no teeny lumps). That wasn’t my aim, but that’s what happened.
I’m heading out to do another section - I’ll try some small experiments on a more consistent alternative to bashing and let you know the results. Since clay particles are flat, I’m assuming that the steady pressure is breaking the bonds between layers, while bashing is more like an earthquake, creating fault lines and breaking the initial lump into very small lump, going for the weaker side-to-side bond between clay particles and leaving alone more of the stronger connections between the flat surfaces. (At least, my mental powerful microscope visualizes that action.)
🤔 🧠⛈ I’ll do one test with my rolling pin (in a plastic bag), to see whether bashed lumps can be quickly and efficiently processed to a finer consistency using the pressure method. Maybe with a board (also covered in plastic so it’s non-porous) underneath so I’m not contending with the relatively but not perfectly smooth surface of a concrete block.
P.S. I’d love to use stone for retaining walls like you, but it’s very expensive, and so I’m trying to re-use materials instead. Hehehe, I could make my own bricks if I had the time, and if washing the clay was an easier process. (I could rent time in a kiln not far from me.)

You could also find a mosaic pattern you like and cut the tiles accordingly. Painting them in separate colors. The design is in the placement of the tiles. You could make a stamp of fired clay to make an imprint that would be easily repeated. I studied ceramics and pot making in college. Looking formward to your personalized tiles.

Could some very small, low profile(thinner than the tiles) clamps help hold the tiles in place while you scrape them? Maybe, the man who made your tile clay “roller” could make some. (Random thought) I think your archeology background helps you make those meticulous notes. I don’t think I would have the patience.😊🤓🥰
