    I have never seen such a *huge* bath container for sterializing and final cooking of tomato jars. And OMG, I was concerned watching Marc carry that same very hot container onto the floor! But I also want to christen Marc as the New Renaissance Man! There are not many men who put up a garden, wield a baby carriage (w/baby) while picking tomatoes and still maintain their sense of masculinity and self:) Well done, Mac!

    So cute, the opening! Instead of engraving, why not make a lino stamp, and stamp the pattern for slip before cutting the square tiles?

    • @Chroniclesofrosieres
      @Chroniclesofrosieres  Рік тому +3

      A very valid suggestion. The issue with making stamps or moulds is that unless it's an identical, repeating design on multiple tiles, it's a waste of time and resources to produce. If I decide on a repeating pattern I'll definitely do something like this. Probably plaster moulds because I can make a tile first in clay and then make the mould by just pouring plaster around it. Look out for it on a future video!

    I grew up in Wisconsin USA. Just before the first frost, my father would pull up whole tomato plants, roots & all. Then hang them upside down in the dark cellar. The tomatoes would all eventually ripen, even the tiny ones. Do try it!

    I love the new intro, with Julliette and Piggy! I'm so impressed with your tile making skills Amy, your glazing is so pretty. Can't wait to see the next lot with the slip! Marc, you're a silent chef aren't you? I do like your tomatoe preserving technique, a lot more refined than mine is! You've got a good supply for winter! How are the ribs healing? Hope they're settling down. Much love and big hugs xxx

    The Thomas Toft of the Chateau, well done ! My Dad always did the 'Bottleing" in England with produce from his garden... This brought back so many memories. We always went "Blackberrying" in the country lanes (away from main roads with lead from vehicles). His store cupboards were full. soft fruits and apples grew in th garden. I miss all that, living in Texas which is not only a harsh climate, but every insect and 'varmint' raid any crops I plant.

    As a big canner myself, I was fascinated seeing your process here! In some ways very different than how it’s typically done here in the States, but in other ways just the same. I’ve thought about experimenting with rubber-sealed clamp jars vs the U.S. standard metal lids, but I’ve already invested in so much of the one variety it doesn’t make much sense to deviate now. But it’s so interesting. And that massive canner pot! I’ve never seen one like that before, it’s fantastic. Complete with that thermometer insert… genius. Off to research pots like that…

    What a great vlog! I'm fascinated by this tile journey Amy and impressed how dedicated you are to doing it well. And well done Marc! That obviously wasn't your first time. Was that big green bunch of leaves that went in the pot bay leaves? Wow I'm curious how it tastes. Maybe I should be using more bay leaves than the few I add. For green tomatoes I had good success with green tomato mince filling for pies and tarts.. Christmas is coming. It's mostly green tomatoes with pears, raisens, spices, suet or butter - my recipe calls for freezing (in zip bags) to preserve but I'm sure it could be canned too. Wouldn't hurt to add some brandy also. The kids are growing so fast - Juliette is getting more interactive.

    Amy Ian Currie's book, Stoneware Glazes, particularly chapters 4, 5, and 6 might help you in developing your slip colorations. Peter King's book, Architectural Ceramics, and Frank Giorgini's book, Handmade Tiles, can provide design inspiration and maker's methods. A blunt colored pencil tip makes great thin lines and ribbon tools are great for incised designs as they give a much cleaner edge. Much success as you explore tile making.

    Fried Green Tomatoes is a great tasting side dish. My mother made them by pan frying the firm green tomatoes in some bacon grease after first coating with a dip in egg mix and then dip in bread crumbs or panko. Flavor the bread crumbs or panko with salt and pepper and a little of your favorite spice (garlic, onion powder, maybe) In the deep South in the USA, they are deep fried which another option but not my choice. The bacon grease was my mother's secret ingredient and each slice was turned over once to crisp up both sides, firm green tomatoes were pan fried (no covering the pan) to the point just before they started to fall apart and they could still be picked up with a stiff spatula. The taste is delicious and a great way to use up the green tomatoes. You could sprinkle the tomatoes with fresh basil, parsley, finely chopped scallions or whatever your heart desired.
