Mitsubishi Pajero Jnr Brake Overhaul. Problems...

- Can you clean brake parts with a bucket of water and a battery charger?! Working with @WhitelandRestorations I used electrolysis to find out. Is it a viable derusting method?
We saved this Pajero Junior JDM 4x4 from a local scrapyard and are now trying to get it back to roadworthy. More soon hopefully!
Merchandise can be found at hubnut.org - thank you!

Dont forget to paint the calipers red for improved stopping power.
Now they've got the electrolysis gear set up they could gold plate them.
My alfa 156 did that
No thats nonscence.Yellow paint is way better for brake calliper stopping power.
Yellow calipers definitely the best for stopping power.
Stopping power is all about dissipating heat, and the best colour for dissipating heat is matt black. Heatsinks in electronic equipment are usually matt black for that reason
AutoDoc's "It'll fit your vehicle" strikes again.
Finding the right parts at such a large parts website can sometimes be a problem. Take your old parts to your local auto parts store, they can measure and search for them.
All from the comfort of your living room? For a rare and odd car? The site clearly lists 110 and 123 mm long pads for this car. The price over the counter is also likely to be at least double. Only professional mechanics, who just bill the customer whatever the list price is, and don't have time to wait for parts, are better off buying from the local auto parts store.
What you moaning about…Hubnut is a very smart operator, he doesn’t need silly jibes
Great to see you and Lewis working together
Hope you manage to find the parts. I've had issues with Autodoc too. Total pain having to wait for parts to get shipped from Europe only to find they're wrong.
Me too, I've stopped using them after they sent me an obviously pre opened egr that had a mounting lug broken off and a completely wrong wheel bearing for a Peugeot 4007.
@@bobuilt10 They are mostly hit, but sometimes miss.
Love a Pajero but a nightmare to change parts . I done an alternator on a 2.8 once. I will honestly say I will never do one again lol 😅. Mint video
The joys of buying parts online, I always use the local motor factors.
Great progress on the cleaning up of the callipers. Soda crystals are great for all sorts of things including removing the tea stains from mugs if you use them a few times more than you should... so I hear. It's annoying that the new bits are not right for the car though. It's a bit of a nightmare sometimes but plucking out a positive from the disaster at least you know which part numbers are not compatible. Many thanks for the Pajero Junior update.
I can attest that the head torches from Whiteland Restorations are brilliant (no pun intended) - incredibly helpful when I was sorting out the darker recesses of my crappy Yaris.
My friends on the Alfa Romeo forum tell me that it is not unheard of for Autodoc to send the wrong parts out ;-)
I predict huge profits on this little baby…well done, you’ve got good contacts😃
A big 👍 from me on this one Mr HubNut.
Lewis is AWESOME. Whiteland Restorations have a great channel. 👍
I was impressed by how well the electrolytic derusting worked! This meyhod was new to me but I'll definitely gove it a go now. Lewis is a top bloke, knowledgeable, helpful and patient.
To speed things up, use more anodes/sacrificial parts, as electrolysis only work in line of sight.👍
try Parts In Motion for car parts, uk based and branded parts, if you buy and give them your reg number, should the part not fit then its free return postage. I am not saying they will do your brake pads for the junior, but for other parts for your fleet give them a go.
Absolutely brilliant video Ian ❤👍 nice seeing the pajero hope you find the right parts brilliant
I’ve used a white vinegar dip on brake parts and other car bits as a soak for 24 hours which has worked as well as electrolysis. The cheap stuff at Tesco that’s about 89p works!
Interesting to use a mild acid instead of an alkali like washing soda...
Vinegar is a cheap substitute for acetone too.
@@johnmoruzzi7236 The washing soda just makes the water conductive, the electrolysis is what removes rust.
Soda Crystals have many uses but didn't know it's good for rust removal. I repainted my Calipers with Hammerite Silver 3 years ago. Still rust free
Its purpose it to make the water conduct the current, it doesn't do much by itseld, besides mild degreasing.
Electrolytic rust removal is fun.
Brilliant little tinkering video on the Pajero Jr. Shame about the wrong parts arriving, but will be worth it in the end.
Not the sites' fault. They list 110mm and 123mm long pads for this car
Yes I have a junior and I needed the 123mm long pads
You may be lucky and find out what else those calipers where fitted to to find the correct pads. I doubt Mitsubishi would have tooled up to make calipers just for that model. its tricky but you need a parts bin specialist. Is there a Pajero Jnr club anywhere on the planet that may be able to help. Hopefully the answer is yes. Its great to save such an interesting vehicle and I take my hat off to you both for taking it on. I look forwards to seeing further video's
Just tuning in now, how much rust can one little car hide😮
Right, on with the show.
I just had a pain in the backside with my MG 6 in terms of parts. I only have myself to blame though, I ordered a suspension arm for the wrong side 🤦. Still, at least I now have both 😂. Another awesome video on the Pajero Jr. Such a gorgeous little car.
Off side belongs in the football world.
Nearside, the side closest to the curb, if you drive on the wrong (left) side of the road and not the right (right) side.
Left and right in the direction of travel is unambigous.
excellent mullet growth !
Don't worry, it will be worth it and I can't wait to see the end result, with you driving it. Bet you have a big smile that day
A fun fact is the black stuff is indeed still rust, it's just been converted from red Iron III Oxide to black Iron II Oxide, which is more stable (as in, protects from rusty rust, oddly) than the former, I think even some rust converters work to convert from red to black rust, but I'm not a chemistry expert, I just watch them on youtube... :P
Interesting fact? very! Fun fact? Questionable. 😊
@@Kenny_P_abz Well it's like "Good News!!!" being something about a Dacia, and, erm, it's not... :P
Paper catalogues are your friend.
Brake pad catalogues used to have exact size images in the numerical listings.
I'd also suggest using a JDM parts specialist like ADL/Blueprint
Electrolytic rust removal only works by line of sight from the sacrificial elektrode, so it works better if you place several around the objects to be de-rusted.
If it's an assembly, connect each part to power, as there may not be good electrical connection between the individual parts. For instance an adjustable wrench.
We tied all the items together with wire, and Lewis also moved the anode several times, and the items themselves.
@@HubNut Ian, have to tried CRC's Evaporust? Its supposed to be really good. Non-toxic and seems to work in an analogous way enzymes in our stomach work to break down starches.
Its expensive at 37,00 per 5 litres, however, it can be reused a few times. Edd China did a sponsored video but the results from a test were so ridiculously good he decided to dip a whole chassis in the stuff. It came out like new! Might be worth checking out in future when you go to dip parts like this size in future.
Whiteland Restoration did a good comparison of many rust removal techniques on their channel.
@@HubNut Much more efficient to have the items surrounded by anodes during the entire process. IMHO the derusting was half-hearted. Maybe get some surplus Evapo-Rust from Ed China?
The Pajero is coming on. Lewis is a good friend & very helpful
Oh yes a pajero update been waiting for this.
another great video has always Ian and miss hubnut and hublets and hubmutts 👍
I had the same issue with brakes pads so they must have just given me the Pinn brake pads now thinking about it. I also just picked up 2 lower control arms that come labelled as Pinn parts, so i hope they work.
Terrific job, they look brilliant.
Liking the Prajero. Just found some Hub Nuttiness from 2018,I think with the red Daimler you purchased from Glasgow? I also like the LJK Setright look you seemed to be rocking.
Media blasting probably quicker? But love new stuff! Love learning..
Looks to be a very effective way of derusting👍
Less swearing required too (in my case at least) 😂
Just a thought, do you know the make of the calipers? If they are Nissin you might find some pads at a kawasaki dealer. Amazing how much stuff is interchangeable & they look suspiciously like old ZZR pads
Pads - Brembo P 54 028👍🏼
It's best to do the electrolysis in a well-ventilated area, because it produces some amount of hydrogen (the bubbles) and therefore there's at least a theoretical risk of fire. In practice I suspect the amounts generated from small parts aren't much of a concern, but still, a good idea to be cautious.
Unless you have a very powerful power supply, the gas is formed so slowly that you can't even collect enough to make a small poof
@@retiredbore378 I used carbon gouging electrodes when I did de-rusting this way.
I tried this electrolysis derust before also. Really works well, even on larger parts if you have large enough of a tub. Loose rust and paint just rinses off after it.
Give Bigg Red a call. They can sell you pistons and seals, as well as offering a rebuild service. They were able to match up Honda Beat parts to other UK market Hondas when I needed to rebuild all four calipers. They've just done the rear caliper on a friend's 1970 Aston Martin DBS, about £250 all in for blasting, Zinc plating and new pistons and seals.
Thanks. I do now have the correct parts.
There must be a story to those two Austin J40 shells sat on the office roof? I remember road-testing one every day for a week in Rhyl in 1958.
I suggest you take the old pistons to a machine shop and have a set made up in stainless. You should be able to pick up some generic seals from a motor factor that knows their business. I've done it a few times for both bikes and car but not since I bought a lathe, oddly...
I wonder if it was parked up because the previous owner found it hard to get parts🤔
Given the age and rarity of the car that's a possibility.
I was watching your reflection with you holding the phone at the end there .....
If u cant find the right pads and u get desperate you may be able to modify some larger pads with an angle grinder ,files etc. No doubt some people will frown on this but ive done it before and it got me out of a bind
LOL, not the first time I've heard about AutoDoc sending wrong parts. 🤣
Was it Brake pad set MR334950 you got for it? that should be the OEM part number, although some models list a slightly narrower pad MR389505. Looks like it either has caliper MR235000 or MR334904
I found out the front brake pads for my junior were the longer pad 127mm ones
For rare cars might be an idea to send a picture or measurements to the suppliers so they can check they are correct at first
The site lists 110 and 123mm long pads for this car. Not their fault
Not Hubnut fault either…he’s very experienced and thorough
I`ve been seeing a black Pajero Junior occasionally going past my CCTV for the last few months, here in outer north London, it must have a devoted owner, bearing in mind they arent ULEZ compliant.. (Oh, & I`ve also found an old Top Gear with a Berlingo review, which I`ll be uploading to UA-cam imminently..)
Not on this topic but wondering as Rustival and the NEC resto show are close together, will you be doing the resto show this year?
As last year, we will only be doing the resto show as a day visit.
Interesting way to remove rust. Just by coincidence, bought today a battery charger, altough smaller, supposedly smart one to charge AGM batteries. I wonder if this one could remove rust too :D
Autodoc . Wait weeks for them to turn up knowing they might fit. This head gasket kit will fit your A4. Well bits if it do but not all. Have started using local supplier. They usually get pretty close on price and its easy to return. Looking forward to more Mitsy
The site lists 110 and 123mm pads for this car. Who's at fault?
I've found Evaporust the best for rust removal.
It seems I am not the only one who has had problems with Autodoc If you every buy an Audi A4 B6 saloon let me know as I have a set of grills "That will definitely fit the cabriolet"
Best advice to anyone thinking about using them is DON'T
The site lists 110 and 123mm pads for this car. Who's at fault? You can also pay for the extended return period. They are more hit than miss, and even professional mechanics can't buy the parts as cheap even if they get a good discount.
Thanks
Thank you!
Not being able to the right parts is such an issue with oddball vehicles.
I’ve got one, ok it’s got two wheels but it’s just as rare.
The site lists 110 and 123mm pads for this car. Who's at fault?
very interesting video good job
Saved from the breakers, is this make or brake time? Pun intended! Hoping you manage to get hold of the elusive brake parts. The Pajero would be a great asset for pottering around Wales.
I have a junior like that I use it for green laning in north wales
Returning stuff to Autodoc is easy and free, you just have to fill in the customs form and then it's free shipping. Tracking provided and you'll get your money back within a couple of weeks. I had to send back an alternator purchased for my Volvo which turned out to be the wrong one and a timing belt that had been opened with bits missing...
Autodoc is awesome. I do miss the fast shipping though, now things have to go through customs but Autodoc tries hard to make it as easy as possible to use their service.
@@EdgyNumber1 Fast shipping?! My package took weeks to arrive!! To be fair the people I spoke to and emails I got back from them were very helpful. It didn't help where Evri dumped the parcel either. I ended up finding the correct alternator from a company on eBay based around by Worthing, ordered and it was here the next day so all ended well.
They are hit and miss, but more hits than misses
I hope to see the car at a future event.
Autodoc - not been successful with them for Honda parts, which after all the delays and them sending the wrong part I ended up getting the bits from the Honda main dealer. Their rating on Trustpilot is I think fairly accurate
I've found Micks Garage reasonable for Mazda 323 bits, and my local factors resell blueprint parts (They list rear wheel cylinders for your vehicle)
Ian some times POOP happens and you just have to roll with it.
Watch out for those dodgy ROHR Chargers. I had one that was an "Intelligent" charger made of nothing more than a transformer. It cooked a £150 battery dry. It had other dangerous faults too. Eventualy the distributors local trading standards took a number of complaints and found the product to be unsafe and orderd a product recall. Fine for electrolyssis mind.
Thanks for the warning. Whiteland wisely don't leave it unattended.
Wonder if I can get a Tupperware box big enough to take a DAF?🤔
Wonder if the pads off a subaru vivio or even a daihatsu mira would fit given kei flavoured interchangeability. Just a thought; and I hope all goes well with your endeavours sir!
Another good video 🚗🚙🚘👏👏👏👍👍👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Auto doc should take them back. Especially if you paid for the no hassle return option.
The piston in a car doesn't touch the bore the rings do, same principal as the seal in the brake caliper.
I guess those are just the breaks, kid😮🤪. Was traveling in Nevada when I came across a Used Car Lot and they had some RHD Pajaro Jr's. They were 1995's. They also had a '97 Pajaro Jr."Flying Pig" Edition. One of 199. And finally a Blue '95 Mitsubishi "Minica" 3-Door. Very silly looking little Car.
I think that's a flying pug, but pig suits it just as well.
@@philtowle4683 It certainly is a weird thing. Painted in a "Royal Maroon/Red"--like combo. Fake 1930's Grill up front and "BBS" style Wheels. Very bizarre 🤪! Marron Interior.
To be fair, returning to Autodoc is a doddle. They give you a hermes return label, and it goes back as usual.
More progress on the Pajero Junior that electrolysis works very well and of course ordering parts and getting the wrong ones they must be for a Mitsubishi Pajero not a Junior
The site lists 110 and 123mm pads for this car. Who's at fault?
@@erik_dk842 Obviously the supplier l have bought very few parts on ebay in Australia l own a 1997 Toyota Hilux and l only buy the parts for it through a locators parts shop and have had 100% success rate although it is a Toyota which are the biggest selling brand in Australia they are everywhere in Australia you are never to far from a Toyota
Autodoc 😤 I feel your pain.
KBP5547
This appears to be the correct part No. for years up to 96. 110mm.
96 on is 123mm.
Cheers.
Hello Ian. I'll go out on a limb and make a suggestion. 10 minutes per pad on a bandsaw and a bit of filing and you could hand fit the new pads to the caliper. The old one can act as a template. Watch for dust, although not asbestos, I don't imagine it's too healthy to breathe it in. I was wondering if some pistons from another model might work. As long as the diameter is bang on and the length is right they should work. Any relief on the face could be ground in with care. Not a bodge if done carefully. It could be viewed as a stop gap measure while the correct parts are sourced which might take some time. Ok, I'm a hack, but just suggesting it so you are aware of the potential option. All the best, Mart.
Don't you just hate incorrect parts....😩The brake calipers are looking good, though. Old Lewis is a top bloke. I would give him my Jag to do a few bits on, but it's a long drive from NZ. 😁
The site lists 110 and 123mm pads for this car. Who's at fault?
Ian I’ve just looked on eBay and they have plenty of break pads for your car and calliper kits
Same error as Autodoc. Parts compatible with the Io, Pinin will not fit the Mini/Junior.
Is it possible to upgrade the brakes to the ones from a different Mitsubishi model, just for ease of parts replacement more than anything
apec brake catalogue online full dimension and part pictures make matching up hard to find stuff much easier
I've heard dipping parts in a tub full of vinegar has the same effect?
So it is said. Must give it a go.
Blueprint may be a better bet
I have heard lots of issues with autodoc sending wrong stuff
It happens with them all to be fair. I'll be finding out how well they deal with returns.
The site lists 110 and 123mm pads for this car. Who's at fault?
That deflated feeling when you line up the new pads and they're half inch too long has been had by many😒
just like home nearly always the wrong parts supplied!
I'm sure you have but have you approached mitzybits?
Yeah. They have some bits but not everything I need. Caliper seals seem in very short supply...
They list 110mm and 123mm length brake pads for the pajero Junior. Which length are your original pads?
110. Have found them now.
Yes I have a junior mine were the 123 mm pads
If their website is wrong, at least get your money back. Best of luck with the Pajero.
The site lists 110 and 123mm pads for this car. Who's at fault?
@@erik_dk842As I said, if it’s wrong… if not they will have an exchange policy I’m sure.
No part No's stamped on the calipers or back of the pads then?
Seems not. Any visible numbers didn't work as part numbers. Have since found access to parts diagrams online.
If they say they will fit, and they don't it's their problem. Contact them and get them to pay for return postage and either provide the right parts or a refund...
In progress.
Isn't this similar to ultrasonic cleaning or completely different?
Different. Ultrasonic cleaning uses ultrasound vibrations to remove crud.
Interesting little post Ian but all the bother of that tub aint worth it just a wire brush and a bit of effort followed by a couple of coats of spray paint.
Thanks for posting all the same
What you do is chat with autodoc when you order so that you get the right parts. If you don't then they will refund or send you the right parts but that shouldnt happens. When it is a car that might not have been sold in germany it's good to get an estimate and the right OE part numbers from a dealer in a country where the model has been sold. Any time I have recieved the wrong parts it has actually been my own fault for not examining well enough. The annoying thing is when they "upgrade" the part you ordered according to their judgment but not to yours.
The site lists 110 and 123mm pads for this car. Who's at fault? I agree on their bogus "upgrades" so you need to write in the comments when ordering: "Must be SKF as ordered"
@@erik_dk842 For me its usually that I get amore expensive brake disk rather than a coated one that I wanted. Honestly brakepads is a jungle since the same vehicle actually can have totally different brake systems especially asian cars. Some times even nissan can't get that right.
@@rimmersbryggeri Nissan is just Renault, but worse for rust.
@@erik_dk842 Maybe but that wasnt relevant to the discussion.
Now paint them bright red with a big bore pipe and massive wheels like the yanks do it 🤣🤣
Is that E30 being restored an M3?
No. 325i I think.
I wonder if Lancer brakes are the same?
Doesn't look it but I have found some pads now.
There are so many things that can go wrong, that to be sent the wrong parts seems gratuitous. Oh, well, nil carborundum as we used to say in a previous historical period.
The site lists 110 and 123mm pads for this car. Who's at fault?
Can you get the old pads relined ?
Did you see my suggestion?
You would have had a quicker, cheaper and better result if you had just dipped the calipers in a bucket of white vinegar. All that wasted electricity.
That sounds like an experiment for another day.
It works excellent, when done right, which is not one tiny anode in the corner, but an array all around the parts. It goes into all crevices. And it dosn't smell like acetic acid -strong vinegar - does.
Ian de-rust with chelation Ed China has got 2000 litres £25,000 of EvapoRust I'm sure he can spare a bit for a fellow UA-camr! and the Swimming pool!
