So how did Japan prepare the Brighton Miracle? | Pt 1 | A Squidge Rugby Deep Dive

  • Five years ago, the biggest shock in rugby history took place on England's south coast, as a team who hadn't won a World Cup match in 24 years beat the competition's most successful side. But this was an upset years in the making- So how did Eddie Jones and Japan plot and prepare the match now known as the Brighton Miracle?
If you've enjoyed any of the channel's content, you can also support Squidge Rugby on Patreon by visiting / squidgerugby , so I can afford the three books I bought and read for this video.

His World Cup record is amazing though.
      2003: Australia in final
      2007: South Africa win
2015: Japan the best team to not make it to the knock outs. (more wins than any other non-qualifying team in history)
      2019: England in final
Like him or not, you can't argue with those facts...

Correction. That Springbok side was not at all well coached. We had a coach who was trying to recreate a game plan from his past, with a team from the SA Rugby past and who was not even capable of getting his own players to adhere to the plan. After the game, several veterans including Victor Matfield, Schalk Burger and Bismarck du Plessis were mentioned as refusing to follow the game plan and thereby costing us the game.
The selections were odd with a severely emaciated Jean de Villiers fresh back from injury and clearly unfit, taking over from Damian de Allende who was in the form of his life yet did not even make the bench. Kolisi was originally put on the bench as cover for flank, but when Willem Alberts was withdrawn at the 11th hour, Kolisi stayed on the bench and Pieter-Steph du Toit leapfrogged him from 'not playing' straight into the starting lineup, in a role he was not familiar with. At the time, PSDT was not a flanker but a second rower and it is interesting to note that two years after this, Coetzee was defending the fact that he (Coetzee) was selecting PSDT out of position at flank. It was not until Rassie arrived that PSDT became effective in that role.
It was a tough time for SA Rugby, due to get worse when Meyer was replaced by Coetzee, and would only improve when Rassie was finally given the reins.

Squidge and Two Cents rugby put up a video and I stop work to watch knowing it will be worth the catch up later..
I tried to get tickets for this game and even drove 250 miles to stay in Brighton in case there were returns. Ended up in a bar with a mate and both SA and Japanese supporters watching it unfold. The Saffas rightly confident, and the Japanese supporters happy to be there. The atmosphere during the game rivalled my watching England win in 2003, and that's not something I ever expected to happen. We spent the 24hours after the game in shock, while getting irresponsibly inebriated consoling Saffas and bowing in total respect to any Japanese we came across.

In hindsight, the devastating yet honourable loss against Japan's supreme bravery in 2015 made the Bokke's successful RWC 2019 campaign more than epic. Beating Japan in the QF and Eddie Jones (and England as a bonus) in the final.

I remember people saying it was going to be 100+ win for us. I countered with the facts that our line up for the particular match was very ad hoc, with the Eddie Jones factor, Jerome Garces factors too boot and the fact Japan was winning tier 1 nations that year (albeit at home to a Wales B team).
I remember a poster telling me to put my money where my mouth was as the odds were 100/1. I should've just done it. But I countered that I certainly did not expect Japan to win but a 20 point margin was more reasonable than a 100. Missed opportunity there..

But David had a long distance weapon kinda like a sniper rifle of the time and Goliath depended on close combat. David only got close after the killer blow to cut off Goliaths head! David was always gonna win that fight! (I just realized you mentioned Gladwell Later in the video I originally wrote this comment when you first mentioned D v G).

1:13 Buster Douglas v. Mike Tyson was 42/1 and some places wouldn't even take bets on Tyson. Japan to beat SA... 80/1. Incredible pay day for some brave soul!

SA were heavily off their game, Japan were heavily on their game. Japan scored more points than SA, so they won. Analysis complete.
