So how did Uruguay shock the world? | Squidge Rugby

- Dismissed. Ignored. Just there to make up the numbers. Uruguay arrived at the 2019 Rugby World Cup as the smallest union in the competition, expected to roll over and ship points aplenty in their every game. Instead, Uruguay pulled off the second-biggest upset in Rugby World Cup history, and pushed semi-finalists Wales all the way. So how did los Teros plot their superb campaign to upset the odds and shock the world?

Watching this after Uruguay beat the US to qualify for the 2023 World Cup in France makes it even more glorious. Vamos Teros.
Rewatching this after they gave France a run for their money last night. Vamos Teros
When I see Rombys on the screen I take my earphones out.
I turn my speakers down.
I turn them up
I turn my speakers up as far as they can go and hold them against my ears.
I pour lukewarm chicken soup on my feet and do the tango. Just happens. I can’t explain it. I won’t explain it.
As a southern Brazilian I am pretty honored to see a South America national team do well in rugby (even more if they are not Argentina as they are already tier 1 for a long time). So I am quite honored for Squidge's excitement for Uruguay, it make us all proud o/
Would love it if South American teams played more rugby, especially Brazil! Has Sevens at Rio 2016 improved rugby's profile & participation your side?
@@hannahmc5291 Not that much. It raised a bit, but the way it is handled by the CBRu (The Brazilian Rugby Union) is extremely vertical, focusing on professionalization of the national team while the base is still not that strong.
@@CABerlitz sorry to hear about the small player base there. Keep flying the flag for rugby in Brazil Carlos!
U white?
@@marcteenhc9793 what? Why?
Squidge, this is your masterpiece. Submitting to Cannes now.
Exactly what I needed right now to recover from a day of online classes.
Would love to see some documentary style videos like bloodgate or Spain-Belgium from last year
Can we see a video about the countries that nearly qualified for the World Cup 2019
I want a sitcom of the whole Spain Romania Belgium debacle
Germany, Hong Kong, Kenya but also Belgium and Spain.. especially Spain & Belgium they were literally there, they were at the finish line for WC 2019, jeez they the deserved it 'n all, cuz the edgier Russia and Canada were more on the fringes to go.
@@karlosdeevs Spain plays without Spaniards . They use only french discards who happen to have a grandpa who was once in Spain . Don't deserved at all . Compare to Russia or Georgia or Uruguay that win or lose they play with their own homegrown talent
@@qwertyyuyop9347 oh yes, i agree it is true. But i'm talking about how close they came in general, and performed.. And after all, maybe they didn't deserve it but still i'd like to see how close for the record (there always black shades, but i just wanna see the bright sides to know for sure)

I lived 2 months in punta del diablo worked in a resturaunt and the owner used to play u 20 for urugauy me and him always use to pass ball i miss those days
VAMOS LOS TEROS ❤️🇺🇾 What a beautiful country
Gracias🇺🇾
Viva los Teros😢💙
"Uruguay do not have a pack the size of either of South Africa's".
I was in the stands for this, fabulous game, fabulous venue, fabulous locals! For a nuetral fan, watching rugby really doesn't get much better than watching an outright underdog triumph in the sun of Kamaishi! It was like watching an international game with all the intimacy of a local footy ground!
Woah, lucky lucky you!
Brilliant arc in this story. Loved the longer length, plus the insight into a team I knew nothing about (sorry, I skipped them in your RWC build up last year). Finally, thank you for reminding me of a that RWC, of a time when people from around the world flocked here in close proximity to celebrate the game. It just seems so distant now.
this illuminated my life in confinment. Cheers Squidge!
This might be your best yet Squidge. Brilliant, informative and entertaining. A wonderful look at a story not properly told yet. Great stuff mate.
Great video Squidge! The delivery of your lines when you started talking about Uruguay 1999 and Japan 2015 were really impressive. You add so much heart and emotion to these videos with just your words alone. Keep up the good work!
I usually like your videos a lot but this one... This one I absolutely loved! Great job!
That is the best Squidge video yet. Quality content, and such a superb story!
U RU GUAY NOMA!!!! Thanks Squidge!!
Squidge thanks for making this video. Los Teros win over Figi is my favorite game from RWC 2019. This team is one to keep an eye on. I’m excited to see where they go from here.
One of your best videos to date. Absolutely loved it. Thanks.
Cannot. Wait. for your deep dive video on the Boks!!!
You're the best, Squidge. Thanks for this, and everything else, frankly. :)
Squidge you need to do more of these videos, insane tbg
Can you do the up coming nations, like spain, belgium etc
I miss rugby so much and this video warms my entire heart every time I come back.
This reminds me so much of SB Nation's rewinder. This format is one of my favourite
Onya Uruguay. Love seeing the younger teams being competitive,
Love this video cheers Squidge!
When I saw the title of the video, and then who uploaded it, I knew lockdown would be okay. I've been waiting for this one, squidge, cheers mate!
I need to watch more Rugby from around the world. There is really some great stuff being played.
Excellent as always Squidge!!
Any chance we can see a video about the meteoric rise of Bristol Bears and the style of play they seem to have adopted under Pat Lam? Very distinctive brand of rugby that deserves some of your analytical goodness.
i've lost track of Pat Lam. I thought he was hard done by in a previous coaching stint (Auckland) and I specifically remember John Kirwin making comments that at the time I thought were specifically unfair (as well as unkind) about Lam. (I know Kirwin is popular, but, I lost all respect for him at that point.) I started watching rugby in 2011, so I was by no means an expert, but, I remember wanting Lam to do well enough to erase that memory! So, i'm glad to hear you use the phrase "meteoric rise" and his name in the same sentence. I just looked up his record...his last two years at Auckland he had a better record than Kirwin did the next two years.
Loving your presentation and sense of humour. Subbed!
another hilarious moment "their fly half is 17 stone for crying out loud 😂😂😂😋oh well done sir! I genuinely laughed loudly
I'm almost fifty years old and I still don't know what someone's weight in stone is and why it would matter. I have a hard enough time tracking pounds vs kilos....
@@acchaladka simple. physics. most fly halves are 13-14.5 stone- if the Fiji 10, is 17 stone and they collide, chances are he will win the collision. it's maybe 40lbs or 18kg or so
@@acchaladka what I do is google 17 stone and it will give that weight in kilograms
@@carlosfurtado1164 17 stone translates to either 'chunky' or 'muscular'. 18 stone means 'fat bastard'. 19 stone means 'prop'.
Quality video as always Squidge !
This is amazing thank you squidge
Gracias por el video, un saludo desde Uruguay
Had my finger hovering over the mute button when I saw rhombys on screen
Amazing video, keep it up!
Brilliant, simply brilliant, Man Lockdown is boring! You wouldn't believe how much time I have now to practice Welsh, Tai chi, my Low Whistle bla, bla, bla... which i enjoy but..... It's just great to get some new entertainment . Thanks Squidge you're a life saver.
That little dig at Jim Hamilton has made my day😂
Awesome video, proper storytelling!
Thanks Squidge - really interesting video 👍
Outstanding as always
It was beautiful. It’s great when an underdog pulls things out of the bag.
Always love more South Africa content!
2:27: I stand by my previous statement; Florence Pugh should play Faf in the Boks '19 movie. Fact.
I just Rombys'd in my room after I saw this and my mom and sister were freaking out, thanks Squidge
This is by far the most underrated channel on UA-cam
8:47 I'm pretty sure Eddy does claim to do that in his autobiography, I can't confirm it but it does sound like he tries to help out especially earlier in his career.
I think he coached a lot of club sides and age sides in japan as well
There's literally videos and articles showing him coaching youth sides in England and in Japan. One quick search on YT shows these two:
ua-cam.com/video/S_51uw3lQoQ/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/nyy46h8493g/v-deo.html
Yeah he literally does that he's kinda known for it
Great video, would love to see some more South American teams have similar rises or come ups
So happy I got up to watch it. Game of the tournament by far.
Fantastic had me smiling from the beginning! Kickkickkick it ball😂
I haven't shut up about this since it happened and you've just given me more ammo. Brilliant vid
24:40 Pedro Bordaberry in the Picture never was President of Uruguay, was candidate for the Partido Colorado but didn't win, was elected for the senate. His father thought was President of Uruguay a very controversial one since he presided over the coup d'etat of June 27, 1973 cause by the attacks of the guerrilla represented by the MLN-T (Movimiento de Liberación Nacional-Tupamaros)
Just wanna say I enjoyed the video, particularly the clips of South Africa v England RWC2019. 🇿🇦😅
5:04 Yo, thats Bordaberry son. Is named the same, his father is the dictator. His son was never president
Please make sure to tweet whenever a podcast is released
I was super proud to watch this! My saying goes...no one is safe when it comes to rugby!!
Very excited for the Springboks deep dive
That is Jim Hamilton right? Such a buffoon! Great video Squidge you legend.
Brilliant and insightful as usual. Could you do similar videos about the bigger nations... like Scotland. Please.
I have a new phrase "all sorts of bat shittery" thanks mate 😁😂
Another incredible video again.
I'd love it if you did a video on fixing super rugby and Australian rugby. Personally with super rugby, the following changes would be best.
- have just AUS, NZ and potentially oceana countries. That way travel is reduced and you don't have to be up at 3:30am.
- allow open market player transfers, similar to the NRL and NFL without losing prospects of representing your country. This is more exciting and encourages competition.
- introduce two more NZ teams and potentially the western force back (but if bias there but I think twiggy would help out). This makes it more competitive between clubs with NZ less powerful and, over a couple years, attaches a local identity. I'm think a central districts team and another south island side.
I'd love to have your thoughts
For you Squidgyboi i watch the ads til the end
The last words on this video are sheer poetry.
Squidge, if that is your real name.
Amazing video!!!! Keel it up, stay safe!
Simply amazing
love the videos are you planning on doing any videos on the lions 2021tour team
He Squidge, I just rewatched the calcutta cup from the 1990 five nations and was just baffled by how much the game has changed over such a relative short period of time. Do you feel like that's somehting you would ever do; go into the history of the game, the impact the dawn of the professional era had on the sport, make a video about the evolution of the rules etc.. would really love your take on all that for it would help me understand and appreciate the game even more (and maybe grasp why scrums were such reckless body-stomping affaires back in the day). Greetings form Belgium
I hope you're listening to the podcast because that topic comes up a lot in great analytical detail
I'm going to send ths to the Spanish rugby federation
Yes Squidge thank you!!!!
Let's just all admit Uruguay had the best jerseys out of all the nations at RWC 2019
Uruguay is also considered world soccer's all-time miracle. Their warrior spirit is the real deal.
Squidge how about a video on this year's REC? There were some very interesting results.
Vamos a más!
Best post credit EVEEEEERRRRR
Loving the Teros love
hey squidge since there arent any matches this year, could u maybe analyse past year matches like the 2015 world cup?
SUP MATE idk if u are aware of the new(first) professional league we have in south america ,basically the countries that are part of this are ARGENTINA BRASIL CHILE COLOMBIA PARAGUAY & URUGUAY 1 team from each country they also brought some players from countries like namibia NZ RSA AUS FIJI TONGA SAMOA ,this year the teams only played 2 or 3 games due to the global pandemic but i reckon it will be a very good league ,btw most of the uruguayan team plays there so it’s pretty promising, if u could do a video about it it would be really cool bud . Its call the SUPER LIGA AMERICANA DE RUGBY (SLAR)
I love how you put the mesh filter over crusaders footage. better safe than sorry
Now I don’t know if I’m in my feels today but WHY THE PHVCK do I feel like crying watching this?? Underdog stories get the best of me 😅
Squidge remains undefeated.
17:01 Underrated moment
Bring back RUGBY 💔
Hiiiii. can you talk about predictions for future international teams based on their youth teams. also about maybe some big players for the future?? + big thank you to you for providing me with countless hours of interesting info on a topic that i dont really care about. u seem more like the guy, who makes videos about astro physics or computer programing
Japan and Argentina were the only warm up games. What was the 3rd?
Great video as usual. I was wondering if you'd be interested in talking about the Lions. The 2009 'Living with the Pride' documentary keeps coming up in my recommendations and it's become somewhat prescient. For example, the fitness coach used by Uruguay is in it, you see some very revealing footage of Andy Powell, and even more revealing of Gatland and Edwards if you're not that way inclined. There's a lot of bitching and moaning about the Lions tours amongst the English and Scottish fans but I'd like to know your opinions and who you expect to see in the squad next year.
epic analysis
Why do you always make me emotional?
*[ORIENTALES, LA PATRIA O LA TUMBA intensifies]*
That Quade Cooper step tho......
Boy I have missed this
Hahaha.... Dick laugh about England... Loved it...
Where are we going to find the podcast
Acast
That captains speech is fucking emotional
It was a fantastic match. Also the story of the Japanese Stadium adds to the narrative.
Can we get a vid on USA rugby and MLR. I'm really curious what's going on with it.
Well you can see some games on UA-cam. Its mostly mediocre rugby played to almost empty stands to a few clumps of spectators scattered around the stands of small stadiums. It doesnt look like anything special so far as I can tell. Based on the games online rugby 🏉 still has a damn loooonnggggg way to go in the US.
Squidge the poet.
Occasionally you see Squidge's hatred for England slip out.
