So how did Japan beat the Boks? | A Squidge Rugby Deep Dive
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 жов 2020
- It's the biggest upset the sport has ever seen. But before Karne Hesketh could slide in the corner to seal the win, so much had to be done. So how did Japan hold their own against, and then systematically dismantle the Springboks, on their way to creating one of the most iconic moments in rugby history?

"And geography aside South Africa couldnt be further away from Zimbabwe" is a great line
Got me off guard 🇰🇪
@@opukotieno6091 thats the Kenya flag
I'm sorry I don't get it. Explain for me???
@@raquelfouche3725 yep get that, but what does he mean by "geography aside"
@@jimmybernasconi9000 except for geography because South Africa is one of the best teams in rugby and Zimbabwe well isnt but in geography they are very close
Things you know will be brought up at every world cup:
1. Johnny's dropgoal
2. Brighton
3. Ireland's quarter's curse.
4. France?
@@lylekruger4864 but which France? :P
5. Are the All Blacks still the best team in the world?
6. England being knocked out at pool stage in their own backyard.
I get a right stiffy when the ABs get knocked out.
Im not sure if there is a better UA-cam analyst for any sport than Squidge right now.
Noticing things a lot of professional coaches won't. God damn this was an impressive review.
I only watch Squidge and Lanterne Rouge for sports content
Squidge is amazing.
Thinking basketball is excellent analysis if you are into that sport, but squidge is way funnier and far more enjoyable to watch
Mixed molly whopped if you like MMA
@@smeetsnoud1 Lanterne Rouge is no pro, but he watches so closely and has excellent insights.
As a South African, I'm not even mad. We needed this humiliation so we could be properly pissed off in 2019.
Keep doing God's work, my dude. Now review all the world cup finals, for Christ's sake!
Lourens Bester he did
@@heloisepruis9322 I must have missed it. Did Squidge already review 1987, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019 rugby world cup finals?
I'm also not even suprised an upset like that was achieved against us. The Springboks have always had this mentality of not playing 100% when they are the far favourites, and playing 100% when they aren't
@@henryraubenheimer5234 Absolutely true. In that same world cup where we lost to Japan, we also lost with a mere 2 points against the best All Blacks side the world has ever seen, in the semis.
@@Laurentus '87 and '91 weren't World Cups, they were merely Rugby Tournaments. If you don't invite everyone, it can't be called a World Cup.
Fk, Squidge. This is equal parts brilliant analysis and enthralling story-telling. A masterpiece. Well done.
Jesus Squidge, WTF?
🤣🤣as a Springbok fan, this was depressingly interesting to watch.
Now you know how England fans felt watching the rugby world cup final one😂😭
@@tomkrys3331 😂😂but I don't believe anything compares to what Japan did to the Springboks at the 2015 RWC. The one game every Springbok fan wants to forget.
i'm a Kiwi but, for some reason, this really made me miss JDV.
Stop blasphemy
Squidge, this is not a way to get a second mention from Rassie
or is it?
Disagree. As Heineke was coach, it shows how well Rassie has done!
@@batdowg Or how shit Heyneke was....
As an Irish fan when he said losing to Japan in a world cup then winning the next one is destiny brings a smile to my face
As an Irish fan, the quarter finals it is.
I'd take just making the semis
@Sean Murphy until the curse of the Quarter Final exit strikes again. If wasn't for bad luck at the World Cup you'd have no luck at all!!!!
everybody gangsta til Russia win the 2023 World Cup
As an springbok fan i would love to see Ireland and wales win the world cup
I just love how Squidge said that this match changed both teams for the better...it truly was an introduction to a new Japan, a Japan side that was seen more as a threat and also inspired other small teams like Uruguay to do the impossible. I know Japan won that day, but the biggest victor in Brighton was RUGBY UNION.
hardest working and most brilliant rugby analyst breathing right now, how you're not working for a top club is beyond me! employing your insights would be akin to having an extra man, the rain man of rugby! AMAZING!
as a springbok fan who just got this in my recommended, I'm gonna need a beer for this one
You might want something stronger
Interesting Fact:
The WiFi password in the South African Hotel room, at the 2019 World Cup in Japan.
Was Brighton 1, Brighton 2 and Brighton 3.
Love this Humor😂
But Because I'm a South African this seems like mind games to me😂🔥
Someone's watched "Chasing the Sun" :)
@@louisjoubert6848 You know it😂💪
Superb analysis. Really shows that rugby is not just a game of bash and crash but a game for intelligent skillful players (and coaches).
This was so incredibly well made and analysed. The time that was put into this video really shows and is greatly appreciated by all of us I'm sure.
Never expected I would be this excited to listen to a welsh man speack to me for 30 minutes
What Welshman ?
@Jack Of Blades oh I see
Better than a Bristiolian
I love how the touch judge celebrates as he sees that final try go down.
Finally happy to see Luke Thompson get the love that he deserves. I've been a lock or 8 most of my time playing rugby, and he has been on of the guys I like to watch and learn from.
watching this as a bok fan, i'm actually so happy the brighton miracle happened. japan are such a wonderful team 💕
i remember well, by the last 10 minutes of the match i found myself switching to cheering on Japan!
Much love to Japanese rugby, from a South African
I was watching this game in SA, crowded bar surrounded by my fellow South Africans. It was a stunning game and I felt such an immense sense of love and pride for Japan during their performance. I was the only one cheering at the end of the match, getting dirty looks from my countrymen, but I couldn't care less. It was such an incredible game to watch, such a beautiful upset and it made me so excited for the future of Rugby. I have loved watching Japan play this beautiful sport, and I love what they have brought to the game. It was a superb win and I am always excited to see them play.
Anata no kenshin ni kansha shimasu.
This man is killing me😔, as a Springboks fan I endure but also enjoy this video. Mixed feelings, like a crazy ex with amazing head... On her shoulders, with an amazing head on her shoulders is what I meant😇
I'm a South-African but even I can see this stuff is pure genius! Amazing video again!!!
Simply outstanding analysis of a mesmerizing match. I still get goosebumps over that phenomenal passage of play after the final scrum decision to go for the win.
Best 36 minutes for a while
You should get an award for this. Seriously, marvelous breakdown, editing and storytelling pace. I am shocked at how good this is. Well done.
Honestly, u just make rugby so easy to understand. Keep up the great work Squigy
Just want to tackle someone again
Found the forward
This could be your best video yet!! Your story-telling felt stepped up, and the raw analysis was the most followable for me, even as a rugby virgin, so far. You make wonderful stuff!
thing I love is literally everyone in the crowd cheering when japan score at the end
Squidge has the ability to make a South African shout for Japan to get in the corner! Brilliant analysis, loved it
Bloody hell, I spend much more time watching video essays than I do going outside and playing sport but this was genuinely a fucking phenomenal video, illustrating flawlessly the significance of this story in a way that even a complete rugby dunce could understand and a writer would be jealous of, this is a beyond-excellent channel
Squidge, this is phenomenal!
I got chills just reliving some of those moments back with you!
This was proper edge of the seat stuff and I knew the outcome! Incredible video man
I love the pacing of this video, heart in mouth stuff towards the end even though weve seen it a hundred times
wasn't aware it was possible for sporting analysis to make you cry
20:05 Best analysis of a play i've ever seen.
This is so much more enjoyable and interesting than tv shows such as scrum v in my opinion - clearly a lot of work and research, amazing video keep it up :))
What an outstanding piece, many thanks Squidge.
I was about to go to sleep but now I have to watch this whole thing
been on the edge of my seat waiting for the 2nd part!!! love it
Cinematic Masterpiece Squidge!
This is the single best thing I've ever seen on UA-cam, phenomenal work Squidge! Keep it up
This was really brilliant. Thank you for all your hard work.
Man. What a video. The analysis, the build up. I enjoyed every minute of it.
Cracking video. Best of them all so far. Was getting emotional near the end.
Wow, what a video! You’re an incredible rugby analysts and also an incredible content creator ! Keep it up 😁
Such a good video. Your writing is excellent. Well done bro. I come back to this again and again.
Fantastic breakdown. Great work. A day never to forget!
Great video thanks for posting. Have watched a few of your videos now and they are all interesting with good insight.
Been waiting for this vid for ages, this match is one of a kind
Beautiful video man keep up the good work
Putting a like to support Squidge but not watching the video because I dont need this sort of pain on a monday night
Brilliant video, one of the best I've seen on this platform ❤️👍
I think the block on oosterhuizen by sau in the Japanese try off the line out move is incredible, all completely legal but that little nudge gave Matsushima that extra half yard to really take the hole
A really great vid, with really great insights, but most importantly great effort from both teams. And how about the fact that this game is one of the greatest ever played (when it comes to drama, suspense, and payoff). Really shows how modern the rugby rules can produce amazing things, when both teams play clean and intelligent.
This last two videos were one emotional journey on top of a great inside in the game. Thank you Squidge
Outstanding video thank you Squidge! Thank you!
What an excellent video, the effort is truly appreciated
Great work! Some of your best analysis ever
I missed this match because I was on basic training with the Air Force.
This video made me feel like I had experienced the game as it happened.
You could hear some emotion in your voice over towards the end and damn that hit me.
Thank you Squidge, this is amazing!
Absolutely brilliant analysis and footage. You are a genius, Sir.
This game brings me to tears every goddamn time. Lovely vid, Squidge.
What a fantastic analysis. Thanks squidge!
Got yourself a new subscriber. You’re videos and analysis are always brilliant no matter the time.

Best one yet really enjoyed it. Superb.
Another very entertaining video. Thank you!
5 years in the making this video has been...well worth wait mate. Brilliant!
great video as always squidge love your content
Amazing as always Squidgey!
Fantastic piece squidge, really enjoyed this one :)
i normally don't comment on your videos and just enjoy them silently, but i can't just not comment on that double-header --- that was just an awesome hour of great analysis, background information and to round things out (as expected^^) funny bits...i can only imagine how hard it is to keep the right balance, and on top of that the emotional component had me fighting back my tears
i just want to say "thank you for your excellent work" representative for all other videos as well
One of your best videos ever 👌
Love your stuff
I'm so glad the algorithm recommended this channel. That was a superb breakdown on how Japan won that game. I was nearly in tears when they won, and it's amazing to see the genius that went into making it happening. The Springboks got beaten by using their strengths against them in an incredibly clever way. I'm utterly impressed
Excellent videos squidge loved them both
Good guy Squidge, putting pun back into pundit!
Top-notch analysis with some of the best puns. Keep on the bloody good work! Thanks a lot.
A rugby masterclass. Thank you for what you do. One of the best for sure!
Outstanding as always
probably the best squidge video of all time, possibly the best rugby match analysis video of all time.
This is quite simply the best thing ever on UA-cam.
Fantastic work Squidge
Absolutely outstanding video and analysis
Amazing as usual squidge, this game gets me in my feels every time
This is a bloody brilliant video, you should be proud of yourself
Been meaning to watch this video for a while now and just have, I love all your vodeos/analyses , but this one just felt special.
And I honestly believe this is the greatest game of rugby to have ever taken place.
Even to this day I can still remember exactly where I was and exactly how it felt pacing my sister living room all on my own (as I was house sitting).
And im extrene gutted that we didn't get to host Japan this summer, but I seriously hope they reschedule the England v Japan games soon, because I am dying to see more of the brave blossoms.
This as thrilling as it is emotional. Thank you, Robbie.
Incredible review, thanks
this is my new favorite video on youtube. Not on the Squidge Rugby page but in all of rugby
Literally didn't move from the moment I finished the first part until the second was released. Worth waiting for. Squidge the 🐐
this legit made me cry (in the best possible way)
incredible analysis as usual
great touches of humour
Give this man an Oscar. Funny but at the same time deeply interesting with a touching end. This is a documentary of the highest quality. I couldn't stop watching.
Go go go Squidge. Thank you very much for making this.
Wow, Squidge! You are both rugby scientist and poet. Fantastic analysis and glorious story telling. I see rugby anew because of you.
We all love rugby but with the insight gained from your analysis we can be more in awe of its brilliance than we thought possible! Thankyou
Great analysis of one of my favourite rugby memories, thanks.
Man this was an incredible video
