Had one of these little fluffy bois as a pet. To be honest it was sort of like having a tiny eight legged cat. She liked to go places she wasn't supposed to, did what she wanted, was very curious and loved to be handled. My one was a bit.. uhhh odd though. While handling her, she would often jump for no reason and no where to go. I used to call it 'popcorning' because she would pop up like corn. She didn't go very far and never hurt herself doing it, but it was so strange. She also seemed to get transfixed onto faces, she loved looking into my eyes for minuets on end. She was a true cutie, I still miss her.
this is a beautiful spider, and judging by popular opinion I'd say it's cute as well. But the force behind how these spiders jump and with their size in terms of jumping further then their own body length scaled down is quite something remarkable. Great filming to the people who put this together and some epic shots of them in motion as well. Thanks for uploading :)
Yup... and they have the poor thing jumping off of some sort of manufactured plexiglass or some other unnatural surface, so you can see its feet slip and she STILL jumps pretty well. To get a real idea of how they can jump, everyone needs to see them jump off of a surface they are designed for such as a plant stem, tree bark, etc... it's only fair. It's also far more impressive. Also, I'd say they are probably VERY wrong about leg strength with these. The blood pressure theory may be sound, maybe... but for them to tackle and hold prey while biting and then dragging up a tree branch... ummm yeah their legs are strong. Hahahahaha. Silly scientists.
yes, I'd agree it definitely would be interesting to see how far they could jump off of something a bit more suited to their environment as you say - on plant stems and tree bark. To have the power of jumping and simply moving about I'd say they would need to have at least semi-strong legs as well, but they are right that spiders don't have the power to jump further their own body length just using strength. Spiders have flexor and extensor muscles just as we do that connect our joints in our legs. Though on a spiders limbs, they only have 4 of the 6 extensor muscles at each joint in the leg. This means they can only extend parts of their legs. in my opinion I'd say that they'd need to flow high blood pressures into only the parts of the legs that don't have the extensor muscles. This way they could get more lift despite the draw-back. But I would go with what your saying that it would be needed to have some strength in the limbs in order to get around and haul up food as you say. maybe your both right! :)
Yeah the only thing that bothers me is the scary music because even this big I don't think it would attack humans unless forced to, these are great creatures
I've always thought Pixar should make an animated film about jumping spiders. The spiders should make cute squealing sounds, somewhat like Wall.E.
