I definitely think stratification helps, especially with varieties that are indigenous to cold winter climates, such as the snow and mountain gums.

In my experience I have grown many pauciflora, gunnii, dalrympleana, delegatensis, cinerea, cordata, ovata etc, all have germinated very quickly when sown directly. Would be interesting to see some trials with other species to settle it. But I would say for nitens I have proven stratification is unnecessary.

@@tr33guy Never had any issues germinating Nitens or Gunnii, perhaps fresh seed from Milligans and its always been stored in the fridge, though it is four plus years old now. Will be interesting to gauge its viability during the next sowings.
I've certainly had issues trying to germinate Niphophila and a many other varieties. I'll do a few trials here, though I doubt the seed I get is as fresh as yours, which I presume is self harvested ?
