      maconga3522 thanks! Got the slippers for Xmas 2 years ago... didn’t know they would be daily footwear. But hey.. when you’re in lockdown, why not, right?!

    I'm replacing my Boss Metal Zone with the MXR super Badass as soon as it gets here. I've been using the Metal Zone since it came out. I run mine into a Boss 7 band EQ and for years sucked out all my mids and dimmed my lows and highs. By myself it sounds awesome. Recently got back in a band and found I didn't cut through hardly at all.

    I used to swear by my MXR Distortion + but lately have been mainly using a Boss MD-2 Mega Distortion (monstrous tones after careful tweaking of onboard EQ) and the EHX Big Muff Ram's Head reissue fuzz (also monstrous, and HUGE, tone-wise).
    My main Strat (Fender guy here) is an HSH with the Dimarzio 'Rhoads set'; Super Distortion & PAF, and the stock ceramic single coil in the middle and that guitar is a beast. I didn't set out to copy Dave Murray's black Strat but there ya' go.

      Consider plugging your Boss into the effects loop. You might discover less eq theaking trial and error. because of sophisticated eq, Boss MD-2 , Metal zone are considered as a preamp. Give it a try and compare.

    Thanks for the demo. Reminded me why I don’t like distortion pedals on Les Pauls. Duane Allman’s Les Paul through a cranked 50-watt Marshall with JBL speakers was the ultimate Les Paul driven tone, IMO.

      While I agree that there is nothing like a LP straight into a cranked amp.... there are ways to make distortion pedals and Lp’s sound amazing together.

      Duane modified the tremolo tube for a extra gain stage/tube distortion. 😊

    MXR can create much more variety of tones with using bass/mid/high tone knobs, than DS-1. Love MXR's smooth sounds.

    You know every once in a while I come across A DS1 and every time I think it will suck Because I started with one going thru a Crate Full stack (GX C.R.A.P.) as Young Dude. I am always amazed at how dynamic it really is, and how Much I have changed to proper Signal Settings to Cut. I will always take the super Badass though

    DS1 sounds great playing alone, but the MXR will be great in a band mix

    A buddy of mine has a MXR, I use the DS1. In every guitar and amp combination, the DS1 sounds better. The only downside of the DS1 in comparison is the volume sucking.

      I actually feel the opposite about these two pedals. The mxr has something special in the mid range (because it has the better eq controls) that the ds1 is severely lacking. This video didn’t highlight the best for the mxr. I ended up selling my ds1 with the thought “hey, it’s only $40… I can always get it again”

      @@pedalheadgeardemos i agree. It's hard to cut through the mix with the DS1 because of the lack of mids.

    • @73prd

      @@BiyaheNiBooit's not hard to cut through a mix u just run an eq pedal in the loop and adjust mid frequency on it and it will cut through anything if u need, eq pedals are king in.any rig

    You don't have larsens when you push the distortion at his maximum with your mxr ? I do (but not the same kind of amp, a Hughes & Kettner TM 20)

    Saya pilih MXR Super Badass!

      Saya gitaris dangdut amatir saya kebetulan pakai pedal mxr super badass distortion. Lebih gurih di padu dengan chorus delay dan reverb lebih lembut dist nya kalau boss DS 1 kurang tebal distortionnya lebih ke low mid. Saya kurang suka itu kembali lagi ke selera 🙏

    If I'm not looking at the video and you're not telling which one is which, I can't really tell
    Hahaha
    They both sound alike
    Maybe you should compare both pedals from how both respond to the input volume and tone knob
    A lot of people miss that in their review

    • @pedalheadgeardemos
      @pedalheadgeardemos  4 роки тому

      Great observation. They sound more similar on this video than they do in person. The DS1 has a more scooped EQ... it sounds brighter and “scratchy”-er. The BA distortion has more mid range quality to it and can better emulate that Marshall cranked tone. I’ll have to do a review in my new studio with my new equipment to do a higher quality shootout. Thanks for the suggestions

  • @pcollenyt3683

    MXR at the start sounded scooped and "boxy"...could have been EQd better. Also the Blues Jr is a boxy sounding amp...I had one for year and even changing the speaker to a C12N it still sounded boxy. Still, the 3 band EQ of the MXR is a real advantage over the DS1 singe tone control...I think the MXR could have been better demonstrated.

    • @pedalheadgeardemos
      @pedalheadgeardemos  Рік тому

      I actually agree with you. at the start I was trying to just have everything straight up and that didn't sound good... so I messed around with the EQ. some of the issue was also the placement of the mic for recording the amp... so it sounded even more boxy than it is. I just recently did a "review" of the MXR and it sounds 100x better than this.

    My take is the MXR leans towards the high gain modern metal while the Boss is old school. The solution is simple for the gigging guitarist, buy both of them…..

    I recommend you get a lavalier mic for your videos as I can't hear what you're saying! Also put the camera right above each pedal, so we can see which one is on, and what the settings are. Thanks!

    The MXR sbd sounds hollow as hell and has way too much midrange to my ears. DS1 sounds better IMO. The DS1 has more "life" if that makes sense. Great sound comparison. Thanks.
