"I don't expect you to watch the whole thing or one game in one sitting." Boy, oh boy, I changed my plans for the evening to listen to this in one sitting when I saw it.
47:37 Thank you Gingy for this sentiment. Been a fan for awhile now and I've been going through some things lately related to past trauma and I had no idea how much I needed to hear this. Nobody in my life wants to touch on what's going on but even hearing this from a stranger helped immensely. Broke down crying at work, full waterworks and I needed it. Anyway before I get too parasocial about it I just wanted to thank you and to encourage you to keep up the amazing work.
Unironically, one of the best motivational lines ever said, the anime is a clusterfuck of explosions, mechs the size of universes and out of nowhere it treats death and self steem with the most care and responsibility. Man I love Gurren laggan
Commenting on Maria's sexualization...long term terminal illness often takes a great toll on the relationship, usually resulting in an incredible amount of work and lost opportunity. Furthermore, terminal diagnoses can sometimes invoke a complete personality shift, making it even more difficult (and admirable) for those who are able to stand with them through the illness to conclusion. Desire and sexuality are probably two things that were lost due to the illness, especially if the relationship was rocky. Additionally, a sexualized Maria may represent what James wants instead of wanting to move on; the original version of his wife that disappeared after the diagnosis, complete with traits/behaviors that he misses.
@@FelixS. The thing i try to remember is that everyone interprets art a different way. Also, he just played like 12 games in a row, so I assume some takes to be off or missing.
I wish I could tell Gingy this in real life but he's definitely the GOAT we don't deserve. My day gets a major boost whenever I see a video drop. Thank you for all that you give us, Gingy.
Hey man, from one stranger on the internet to another: I hope everything gets better for you. Gotta take life day by day, y'know? Just be careful with some of the themes and such in some of these games, they can really fuck with your head.
I’m the kind of crazy who might listen to your awesome video essays in one sitting while I’m doing chores around the house. You’re one of my absolute all-time favourite video essayists and I love your explanations, analyses, and critiques of video games. I’m obviously always elated when another UA-camr I follow also covers the same games as you and the different opinions fascinate me but I also want to explicitly say that your video essays feel the most thorough, the most detailed, and it’s absolutely amazing what you’re delivering on such a consistent basis. Your witty remarks and little jokes, along with the stone-cold delivery, also makes it possible to stay captivated despite my ADHD and I feel a genuine joy when I get a notification for one of your essays. Don’t overwork yourself, though, take care 🧡🧡🧡 47:34 Thank you so much for saying that, I needed that reminder
I also listen to his videos like that, not to mention to help me sleep when I've got a racing mind. UA-camrs and Longform retrospectives are the therapy we didn't know we needed
7 minutes in - I have watched MANY silent hill videos and wasn't sure I would complete this one....... I absolutely will because Gingy research just brings a new light!
47:35 Thank you Gingy, I genuinely needed someone to say that. I have been constantly reminded of past trauma for a while and you saying this helps tremendously. I've been watching your content ever since around Elden Ring released and you've introduced me to so much. Thank you for being such a positive part of the world.
My dude, here I was waiting for your Silent Hill 2 remake retrospective video, and you came out with a whole 2-movie LOTR runtime video!! You are simply the best!! Finally got enough Gingy content to binge for the next week 🥳 keep up the amazing work!!
Love that you enjoy the 5+ hour videos because I do too. You can cover more series and really give those through looks at the entire series. Love it. Don't stop making em!
Honestly the Silent Hill Short Message hit me hard as I am going some problems the main character faces. Even though my lows are really low, I try to do the best everyday I can and hopefully start going to therapy to get professional help. Also banging video as always Gingy waiting for your next project :D
I was waiting this retrospective for quite some time and it`s almost 6 hours. BRUHHHH I was not expecting that. Will watch with great interest after work , thank you for your work Gingy :D
48:01 damn dude the past week has been really dark, didn’t think I’d find the wisdom and support I need in a silent hill vid. Thanks Gingy, appreciate you as always
I still have my PS2 copy of Silent Hill 2. What a game. I had never experienced a game that hit me in my “feels” lol. It’s been my favourite horror game of all time since 2001. A true masterpiece and I love the remake!
Gingy, brother - This is above and beyond. I've been watching you for a few years and once again this is an incredible gift. Well written, spoken and edited. I do hope you have some downtime and hope this hits well over 1m+views. It deserves it. Again, as always thank you.
I'm always particularly glad when you do horror games because while I'm interested in the storylines, I'm a freaking scaredy-cat when it comes to horror.
Gingy, thank you from the bottom of my heart. When you started talking about believing in oneself at around the 47 minute mark it moved me to tears, because I needed to hear that without even knowing. Your kindness, even to a stranger like me, mean more than words can describe.
Silent Hill has fascinated me since I was a child and I’ll never get tired of watching my favorite UA-camrs do retrospective videos on the series, thank you for being one of them
47:34 I'm re-watching (listening) while doing chores and I had forgotten you put that affirmation there… thanks. I've had a crappy week and these last couple of days any tiniest instance of affirmation makes me tear up. Thanks for making me cry, seriously.
SH3 is also my favorite of the classic games! Between fantastic character writing, gorgeous art direction and sound design/music and pretty competently designed gameplay it just hits every note that a horror game needs to hit imo That's on top of heather being one of the coolest protagonists in the genre lol
I've played 2, 3, 4, Homecoming, and 2 Remake and I'm so happy you didn't shit on 4 or Homecoming. I loved all of them individually with 4 and 2 being my tied favorites. Refreshing to listen to someone not belittle 4 to oblivion while having the whole premise go over their heads like alot I've attempted to listen to. I appreciate your analysis, you were as objectively close in describing them as one can be
Just in case no one has said this yet, the polaroids in the SH2 Remake spell out "You've been here for two decades", reinforcing the time loop theory, so the game is a sequel
Thanks for doing these @gingy, its a massive undertaking and speaking for myself I find TREMENDOUS entertainment value in all your work. Especially these long ones.
It took me a few days, but this analysis is absolutely incredible. It’s great to hear your views on events from the games, and it’s even better to learn the context behind the production of these games, even when I have different takes on it myself. Congrats, Gingy! Your content is awesome! Looking forward to more. You could make one for Control, since it ties in the Alan Wake universe and it's going to have a sequel.
I just got the silent hill 2 remake and was glad they added a message and info if you need help with the subjects in the game. This game was mine and my best friends favorite game on ps2 unfortunately he passed before he could see the remake. Playing this game now as an adult and husband this game will hit even harder.
I love that you added the cutscenes from Like a Dragon for the coin lockers. I had dropped something on the floor so I picked it up as you were talking about them. I had thought “Sounds like Like a Dragon and Ichiban” and looked back at my phone
Over the last few days I have been falling asleep to this video and watching it in its entirety all I can say is silent hill 2 is my favorite horror game and I love silent hill games. Good Video I am really happy you enjoyed the games and happy you made a video on them keep up the good work. I love your stuff looking forward to next video :)
the remake is really inspiring to see but i didnt see the other two in the recent efforts for silent hill excited to see what happens next! also this came up at the perfect time i love a good lore video!
THANK YOU! I am so happy for this retrospective but also for not censoring yourself on certain words or subjects, too many people will not say certain things for fear of demonitisation. Self censoring is weak af
Gingy: I dont expect you to finish watching or listening to this in one session. Me: Uh, yeah totally, haha, absolutely will not absorb and devour this content like caffeine in the morning😅
Man, I finally finished the video. Thank you for the retrospective cause I didn't play the games so I wanted to know what's this thing about silent hill everyone so hyped about and got my answer.
My favorite scene from the remake is the leave ending when you first confront Maria on the roof. She tries to play it off like she's Mary, but the moment she says "now we can be together forever" James' face drops and he realizes who he's talking to. They have a back and forth where James keeps saying he can't and it's not right, that Mary is dead and he knows that now while Maria tells him to shut up, how she could be more than what Mary ever was. She looks away from James and turns back with bright blue eyes instead of Mary's brown eyes we saw before before the fight begins. Compare that to the original where james walks up and goes "Mary!?" and Maria goes "lol wrong again nerd. Mary's dead. it is I: Maria"
"I don't expect you to watch the whole thing or one game in one sitting." Boy, oh boy, I changed my plans for the evening to listen to this in one sitting when I saw it.

i could see this honestly
Was this even up to debate? I thought it was as clear as it gets what the depiction of Maria was supposed to be mean.
