There's a lot of guys that can shred, and are technically advanced but end up sounding uninspiring because they miss the point.....which is musicality. This is what Joe does so beautifully. It's like musical raindrops, raining down calmness, not just a billions notes of pointlessness. Stunning.

I saw Joe with Eric opening for him. It was the Flying in a Blue Dream/ Ah Via Musicom tour. . Every note sounded sparkling new and every melody pushed the imagination deeper into the inner and outer spaces. I'd just turned 21. What a time to be young and alive!
I was a huge fan from the "Surfing" album (I was living in SoCal) forward and first saw him on the Extremist tour in Cleveland after I moved to that shithole. Since then I've seen him TONS of times, solo and with G3, even traveled to from Cleveland to Toronto to see the G3 show with Petrucci at Massey Hall (first time hearing/seeing him - now I'm a big DT fan). Saw him a bunch of times solo and with G3 in CO after that and I met Joe in '19 in a Hollyweird art gallery after buying some of his artwork. REALLY cool and humble guy (got a pic with him and later he signed my Massey Hall stub and 2 others), but sadly he didn't play. Awesome to stumble across this!
what a freaking pro. Went to a battle of the bands in Clarksburg, WV around 1992. All heavy metal for the most part. Then this band called Ice-9 came up and they looked like the Beach Boys. Bunch of short-haired preppy-type dudes. They didn't hang their guitars low and cool either. Then they started playing and "Summer Song" was the opener. I quit laughing. Watching these videos of Joe all these years later - no other guitar player still inspires me more. I later met that lead guitarist who was working at a local music shop. He was a Berkeley grad. He sold me my first Peavey 5150 4x12 cab, helped me cobble together some other used gear and my first guitar, an Ibanez. Been playing them for thirty years now. Thanks Ken McMahon for opening my eyes to the beauty of Joe Satriani when I was 15 years old. It literally changed my life.
I saw him do this song live at the Orpheum in Minneapolis back when the album released. Front row seats . This video brought me back to that night literally!!!!! Thanks for the memories Joe!!!

Yeah, saw him in a smallish club in Philly on the tour for Flying in a Blue Dream and it was amazing. Broke a string on one song and just kept going with his solo. It was unbelievable.

My dear friend Professor Robert Cryer adored Joe. He introduced me to Surfing... and I've been a fan ever since. Rob died from covid in 2020, and no of us could attend funeral. We had a night of beer and Satriani in honour of him!

What blows my mind is that Satch released this song 34 years ago, when he was 33 years old. The man is now 67 and still has the chops in those timeless hands to pull off this melodic and emotional masterpiece of guitar work. My dear friend Professor Robert Cryer adored Joe. He introduced me to Surfing... and I've been a fan ever since. Rob died from covid in 2020, and no of us could attend funeral. We had a night of beer and Satriani in honour of him!

What blows my mind is that Satch released this song 34 years ago, when he was 33 years old. The man is now 67 and still has the chops in those timeless hands to pull off this melodic and emotional masterpiece of guitar work. His playing is iconic and every bit as impressive today as it was when I first heard it 34 years ago. Amazing…
