This exercise has been tabbed and covered extensively, but, i find it incredibly difficult to replicate Jaco's sound, feel and touch. There really is no replicating it😢

And hopefully there won't be another Jaco. Technically it's difficult to get closer to the original version, I slightly over mixed my bass so you hear every detail in my playing which is the result of an extensive work on every accent, inflexion or détail in Jaco phrasing. The next step into cloning this video would be to have the same bass setup, strings and amps, but that's not the point. it's still a great exercise to work.
      All the best ! :)

@@leochazallet for me, the hardest thing to replicate is Jaco's touch on the string and the sound he got. It didnt matter the equipment, Jaco's sound is just unmatched man. I dont know what it is. His harmonics were just so perfect too

@@JonHop1 I really have some matter to answer here. There is some particular aspect about Jaco's gear that give his signature tone. I finally had the opportunity to try an original Acoustic 360 with a Pre CBS Jazz Bass. And you cannot imagine how surprised I was to find out that it's in fact 95% of the Jaco's tone. For me any decent player with a Pre CBS Jazz, Rotosound (or similar) strings and an Acoustic 360 can sound exactly like Jaco. There is a particular setup on this amp that produce the "Jaco Tone". And believe me, you could nail that too.
That is an interesting discussion, I'll try to arrange a recording with the amp, so you could hear as well. Kind of a "debunk" vidéo about Jaco's tone. 🤗

@@leochazallet I dunno man, he would pick up random basses at the Jazz clubs here in Florida, regardless of the strings or amp, and get this crazy sound with his fingers. I think of course, some of his signature sound is his gear, BUT, a lot of his sound was in the genetics of his finger pads and technique on the strings. The way he hit his harmonics man, its just crazy how clean they were on any bass he touched. I know Jaco had super short finger nails, and an unusually large finger pad, which allowed him to to get this super clean and full pluck on the string. But yes, I would love to hear u arrange something with similar gear to Jaco!

@@JonHop1 Very interesting to talk about this, thank you for this. Fun fact, with years of intense playing I've got bigger finger pads and shorter nails. I also have the ability to pick up any bass on any amp and play like crazy, so of course Jaco could do this. But to nail that exact sound that you'll recognize saying "that's Jaco sound !!", you'll have to play through the Acoustic 360, 100% sure of that. 😁
Looking forward to do this ! I'll work on it ! :)

Now try one without the audio from the video playing at the same volume. You're extremely close, which is no easy task however, you're walking on top of him so it's tough to hear it note for note.

I was wondering about doing it at first, as two bass tracks together are a bit messy to mix when playing the exact same thing. But finally I was happy with that result. My bass is significantly louder than Jaco's track. I've been able to get very close to Jaco's phrasing, next step would be to have the exact same gear and recording setup, but that was not my goal. Thank you for your detailed comment. All the best ! :)

RipX from HitNMmix allows you to separate all audio tracks on a record. Then you can remove bass to play over the backing, or solo the bass to get a clearer view of what its doing. You can also loop sections, change tempo / key etc.
