A word of warning, the special features are on a region B Blu-Ray disc that will not play on region A players. The 4K discs are region free.

Never thought of that , would have been a pain if after importing a region A disc (I'm in the UK) - luckily both of my 4K players are also Multi Region.

I bought the big box version with the book - one of my favorite horror films of all time -- I go with the theatrical cut. Also worth mentioning the Blu-ray bonus content will need Region B player.

Am I the only one that feels the 1080 yellowish version looks better, more nostalgic, 70's feel? Same with the Godfather 4K ... I mean, yes the 4K's look more natural I guess but that was the charm of these movies ... this period look that we all loved and remembered was that yellowish, sun tinged look. These 4K versions while more "real" in tone ... take away from what I remember these movies looking like ... and loving for that reason. I don't know ... it's my personal opinion.
This is certainly something I've found myself pontificating on... I think I lean to prefer the yellow in the case of DOTD here, but I'd be happy watching this on a VHS.

Second Sight 4k release: 1) the *special features disc is region B locked* 2) only the theatrical and extended cuts show the most improvement since they were mastered in HDR10 and HDR10+ while *the Argento cut is presented in SDR* 3) *the 1.0 monoaural track is the only option available for the Cannes Extended cut* 4) the *5.1 surround remix is off* (as this review mentions) and thins out the mid-range, which then makes for a rather flat and limited sound and the bass sounds muddled, thus the 2.0 stereo is arguably the best of the three options *but this is not available with the extended edition*
The 4K picture looks way too blue/cold.
Got the limited edition when it first dropped. It was packed with goodies.

Wow, this has been out a while. I thought you'd have already had the Limited Edition set of this. Nobody goes all out on Limited Editions quite like Second Sight. They get the rights to some awesome titles too. Can't wait for the Martin 4k & also the long requested The Hitcher 4k release from them later this year.

They said they had delayed the release because of the recently discovered longer cut which they tried to acquire the rights to so they could make apart of the release but unfortunately they were unsuccessful so now they are moving forward with the release & it will be out by the end of the year, exact date pending.

Got this edition at release, can't agree more, Second Sight keeps knocking it out of the park. Looking forward to their upcoming 4k releases of The Witch and Martin.
I didn't like the nasty reddish color hue on the Anchor Bay release either, but I think the 4k picture looks far too blue.
When Anchor Bay did it great, they had great releases, especially considering they were founded from the ashes of three public domain distributors and the bankrupt Media Entertainment. And when they missed, man were they bad.
Got mine from DiabolikDVD at launch and absolutely love it. Worth noting that I think the bonus disc is on a region 2 locked blu-ray disc, while all of the movie discs are UHD region free.
Second Sight is hit or miss with locking. Flight Of The Navigator is unlocked, but Dawn Of The Dead and Electric Dreams are both locked. And now that companies are experimenting with locking 4Ks it’s going to get messy.

I bought this set on launch in the UK and it's easily one of the best 4ks in my collection it's a great set must own! Especially if your a horror or George.A. Romero fan.
I remember that I got back into physical media mainly due to listening to Robert Meyer Burnett, and he absolutely loves this film. He was talking about the highly anticipated release of this 4K, so I put my preorder in for the limited edition, and it was I think the first big release that came out during the pandemic.

Better late than never. I downloaded the 4k extended cut and was blown away buy the quality of the picture. I cant wait to get the physical boxset.
Well done for tracking it down I was an early adopter and got it from Zavvi I have most of the second sight box releases.
I just got my Second Sight copy. It’s amazing. Especially since my last copy was the Anchor Bay 2004 set. Then before that was my original Thorn/EMI VHS copy!
I was super pleased with Second Sight's Blu-ray Special Edition of "The Changeling" (1980). Especially glad it is region-free which unfortunately this "Dawn" does not have for Region "A" players on the non-4K content.
They would have been been sued by Rubenstein if they released Dawn completely region free
Hopefully this release is loaded with bonus features, especially the mall shooting scenes. Dawn of the Dead is my favorite George Romero horror movie!

Glad you finally got a copy Jeff. It's good that even the standard edition is pretty full of content. We were definitely lucky in the UK with the special edition. It's one of the best definitely. The Dog Soldiers (when it finally gets released) should be just as good.

I got the 4K collectors set from Second Sight last December- has all the 4K discs, plus soundtrack cds, production book etc .... Paid way TOO MUCH, but I love it!
Argento cut is actually not a new 4k scan it was done for an Italian release in 2018 and was scanned from an interpositive instead of the Original Camera Negative that the two new restorations done by Second Sight and although it is 4k the Argento cut does not have HDR. It looks really great but has a completely different look, feel and colour grade compared with the theatrical and extended.
Just wondering what your thoughts on the Argento picture and colour compared to the theatrical as they are quite different.
Hate to say it, but that 4K picture looks way too cool (blue). Maybe it's just because my eyes have been used to seeing the other version for all of these years, but the 4K looks too "icy." Are you sure they didn't over-correct somehow in the scanning process when trying to tone down the yellows?

I got the SS 7 disc box the other day second-hand for 22.50 with a slight ding on the top of the box but everything is there the soundtrack and books, this set is now £80-100+ new in the UK , Its a superb set.

I’ve the Anchor Bay regular DVD and was lucky enough to order it thru Second Sight from my sister that lives in Poland. A really must have and even if I don’t own a region free player for the extras disc, I can play it and rip it with the external player for my laptop 😃

I got the big $100 version pre ordered. So glad I did as it was sold out immediately when it released. Kind of wish I waited for the smaller version. It's one of my favorite horror films of all time but I don't need books and the soundtrack. But the packaging is way better on it

I’ve just picked it up new for £29.99 (US$36) on Amazon UK, what a bargain.
All 3 versions look great and the HDR gives a real depth to the picture, whilst the film grain is nice.
I’ve got to say when they start the picture in the red carpet walled room looks awful and quite muddy then it improves very quickly. A good addition to my collection.

I got the same Second Site 4K UHD collection just three months ago from Amazon for about $40 with free shipping. It seems it’s still available on Amazon for less than that. It shows the photo of the same box and claims to be 4K UHD. But sometimes the descriptions there are wrong.
I actually picked this up at the beginning of the year after seeing a review somebody posted that made sure to say that the 4k discs are region free.
From the moment you hear that is 4k, it's all ready region free!!! The only you one you check for is DVD or Blu-Ray!!!

@@richardbaker183 that's the advantage 4k has over Bluray or DVD, however some 4k transfers are horrible, for instance T2, I prefer that on bluray!!!

I bought the limited edition of this back when it came out and I still haven't gotten a region free layer so that I can watch the features lol. At least I can watch all the cuts though.

What is the best cut too watch? i haven't seen this film in 10yrs, and just got the Second Sight release.
I just checked youtube and the 156 min version is still on there it runs 2:34 min and change it'd called the extra long version its crazy since I've seen this version I can't bring myself to watch any other version theatrical version has less scenes the European version cut too much out and the extended was my favorite up until I saw this version about 6 yrs ago

Got the ultimate limited 4k when It came out awhile back I still go with the extended version just because to me more of Dawn is better but there was a 156 min version with a bit from all 3 versions that was on UA-cam of course that version is not as good as 4k or even blue ray but to me that version is my favorite version I think it was from Germany but there were no subtitles or anything that is the version I wish that was a part of this box but I don't know if this was an edit made by someone else somehow I know Rubinstein and Romero had issues at the end there but I don't know who put it in youtube but It was available on UA-cam for years check it out when u can let me know what u think of it if u can locate it
i had to get second sight standard 4k i still kick myself for not getting limited i wasnt into importing from overseas until this release by the time i imported limited sold out after that when second sight announces something new i get it right away
Jeff, you should review some other 4k/blu rays that has been out for a while now like Labyrinth (1986), The Dark Crystal (1982), The Beastmaster (1982), and more recently The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982). Since you've reviewed a 4k movie that's been out for a while now like Dawn of the Dead, it wouldn't hurt to review the ones I've suggested.

I finally broke down and purchased a copy tonight, which is very expensive, lol. I don't see America getting a release anytime soon, especially from what I hear the owner of the rights is doing, Criterion was going to release it but the demands were just to much. He wanted multiple millions and 80 percent of all the sales, he threatened to throw the master copy into his fireplace and burn it so nobody could get it. He's upset because he's spent 3 or 4 million turning Dawn of the dead into a 3d movie. He believes that's what the kids want, he doesn't understand the people who actually watch these movies and buy them are all middle-aged or close to it. Anyone who is interested just Google the story, it's easy to find and very interesting. I would also suggest buying a copy now because the price is only going up, I remember finding my bluray copy at a dollar general for 5 dollars, and now it's at least 50 or so.

So Orbit and Zavvi are out of stock. Amazon has it for $40, and it looks like the same packaging, but there are a lot of negative reviews saying it is not a true 4k version. Think I might stick with my beloved 1080p Arrow blu until the 4k version gets a wider release.
I must say that I actually prefer the bluray color grading based on your still frames. That yellow/orange tint gives the movie an unmistakable 70's horror feel. The new 4K transfer looks too blue tinted, at least to me. But of course I still have to get the new box set anyway.
That "70's feel" of the yellow/orange tint we grew up with was literally just the fading of the print. The 4K UHD is how it looked in theaters at the time.
I have the 6 disc set and also still have the DVD version with all three cuts, ordered it day one and I agree the 4K is the one to get… do you think the 3D version will ever make it to home?

There is a 3-D version that was made quite some time ago, it’s been showing at theaters lately hopefully maybe to come out on Blu-ray.

Yes, you’ll need a region-free player or a computer with a Blu-Ray disc drive.
I have the limited box set had pre-ordered it from Zavii early on if u don't u of course would be left out this is one of my favorite 4k sets of all ti.e up to this point it's in my top 5 at least counting 4k sets also loved the Tremors 4k set

Is it just me? At the roughly 3 minute mark when he is showing the screen shots for 1080 p and the comparative 4k, I thought every 1080p shot looked best. The 4k shots seemed washed out. The Ken Foree shot was the opposite and was so dark you lost all image of him. Is the 1080p shots he is showing from a disc in this set or an older 1080p release?
I got mine on e-bay a while ago. I ended up paying 50 plus shipping, but seeing the insane prices others were paying I got a bargain
