I may lose my undead cred over this, but..... YES, Day is overall a better film than Dawn. I think because: A. Like Blade Runner, there’s a bit too much debate that depends on which version of Dawn you’re talking about. B. That stupid “hero” music that plays when Ken Foree decides to fight his way to the helicopter almost ruins Dawn for me. C. Dawn’s opening sequence is incredible, probably right up through the protagonist’s helicopter escape from the city but the potential best antagonist - the cop Woolley (“Woolley’s gone apeshit, man” “Hey, hey, hey!” ) exits the film way too fast, securing Cpt. Rhodes as the best villain in any Romero Dead movie 4. Rhodes has the best death scene in the trilogy as well 5. It’s easy to forget how much Dawn saga in the time between the mall is secured and when the bikers show up - Day’s tension percolates from start to finish 6. Bub is the trilogy’s most distinctive and only sympathetic zombie 7. Day has a “love theme” at the end lol 8. Day emphasizes “humanity is the real danger” almost as well as Night of the Living Dead did 9. Day has a larger, better ensemble cast overall 10. The most obvious reason: Tom Savini’s makeup/FX are superior
@@sunshinesooperman5110 Awesome 😆 I agree. I also like Day better. As a kid first seeing them it was just more visceral and insane. Dawn is maybe a better satire of culture, as well as Night, but Day entertains me the most the whole way through.

Rhodes is single handley one of the most deranged and cold human antagonist in the trilogy imo. Definitely took 'guts' to deliver such a performance imo.
He was awesome. Up until he abandoned his men towards the end, it was easy to somewhat be on his side, as Logan was an insane madman who was using the deceased soldiers for his experiments.
@@travismcdonald6576 Yeah. Logan keep on saying that he can domestic the zombies but just a few seconds ago he told the Captain that they are the minatory ones now. 400,000 to one according to his calculation. How is he going to "domestic" millions of zombies? Lol
This is by far my favorite zombie movie of all time!!! Dawn is great, but I've always appreciated the story of everyone just falling apart and not really knowing how to handle themselves. The greatest special effects scene ever filmed, in my opinion, is the head rip scene towards the end. The fact that his voice pitch squeals higher and higher is realistic enough and his mouth continues to move. Just cannot beat that scene!!!
My only issue is what alot of others had, the constant yelling back and forth was a bit too much. But the setting gave it such a great atmosphere and Romero/Savini were at their very best. I like 'Dawn' the most but this is definitely worthy of the argument.
"You aint ever going to figure it out. The same way they never figured out why the stars are where they are. It aint mankind's job knowing that. So you're wasting time, Sarah. And time is all we got left, ya know"
@@nameredacted1176 I'd vote for Bub. He'd probably fix our country real quick......or chomp down on his vice president. Either way, it'd be entertaining.
I agree. As a kid I didn't like it. I was comparing it too much to dawn of the dead. This is a much darker film, and I've grown to appreciate that more. This also has the best gore and some great actors. Lori cardille makes a great leading lady and joe pilato is an awesomely psychotic villain.
I named my now deceased beloved cat Bub over 15 years ago….This is one of my favorite American Horror movies….Big horror fan here and I understand your thoughts….✌️
Joseph Pilato’s performance in this is so underrated. People often forget solid acting is what makes real horror work. I remember when I was a kid I found him so intimidating and scary. RIP buddy. You were not appreciated enough. PS The man had beautiful hair as well lol
@@zombiTrout that smell is unforgettable. I miss going to the video store with my grams and getting lost in the aisles with her. Just picking up the boxes and looking at the artwork was a past time for us.
The Living Dead trilogy is probably my all-time favorite movie trilogy, though Star Wars and the Evil Dead come pretty close. I would say Dawn of the Dead is better, but Day of the Dead has the best production value and possibly the most memorable zombie ever, Bub.
@Captain Brandon Punk & Horror Lover Same here. I think it's common for directors to lose some of that passion when money is thrown at them as opposed to them fighting to get it. I grew up with Romero, Carpenter, Landis etc and they all made great films back then, but suffered later on. Land was okay but I never got the Big Daddy zombie being aware (Bub was trained to be that way) and also that lame ending of "they're just looking for a place to live"... no, they're dead... they're f**king dead, and you want to teach them tricks (or in this case, let them wander off after chomping on a few hundred families). Diary and Survival just didn't work for me, especially that line at the beginning of Diary where the lead says "I added music" when she's talking about her home movie. Yeah, you'd do that wouldn't you. "Hmm, I wonder what works for when my bestie got chewed". Still, Romero gave us some great films and not just his zombie trilogy. I liked Knight Riders, Monkey Shines was a great thriller and Creepshow still stands out as a great horror/comedy.
It's definitely right at the top of the list. Personally I love 'Land of the Dead' and 'Diary of the Dead' as well. Romero carried along pretty well when he was allowed to have free reign. 'Land of the Dead' was the only time he really got a STUDIO Budget and he did some great stuff with it. The cinematography and acting were top notch. Dennis Hopper was awesome. Gotta give thanks to '28 Days Later' and the remake of 'Dawn of the Dead' because it showed studios that well made zombie films could make money. Romero deserved it after all those years.
This is my favorite Romero movie, it has a lot of gore but a compelling story with interesting characters. Some will say that the lack of pies being thrown at the zombies is a minus but I disagree.
The film is pretty much universally loved at this point. I haven't heard much hate for it in YEARS. Depending on my mood, I oscillate between Dawn and Day as my favorite. Ah hell, Night also takes the top spot for me sometimes. In short, all three of the original films are the best!
Pretty nuts to think that for the longest time, people thought this was not only the worst Dead flick but a bad zombie movie in general. It’s great to see that the last decade and overall time has been kind to Day and aged like a fine wine! I’ll never forget renting this from a Blockbuster in 2004 and cementing my love for zombie flicks that Resident Evil and the Dawn remake helped kickstart and then during the same year The Walking Dead started to publish and I started reading with issue 9. Zombies in 2003-2010 were just so cool and so much fun. Couldn’t get enough of it!
Honestly Day of the Dead is a genuine horror masterpiece. The ACTING!! Is so damn intense. The gore and music impressive. Its a depressing flick though, so I can't watch it very often. But then Night and Dawn are depressing too. Brilliant though
Taso Stavrakis aka Private Torrez was one of the most disturbing death scenes. Ive spoken to him on several occasions about this movie. Hes a really cool guy!!! He opened up his own Ren Festival and he also has a death scene in Dawn of the Dead, he played the sledgehammer guy that got his guts ripped out
Answer: Yes (not by much though) They’re both excellent and genre-defining if you ask me, but the sheer sense of dread, bleakness, and confined madness in Day tops it out for me. I totally understand why someone would put Dawn on top though, so I never question it when people do.
Dude I totally missed the live! I was getting ready for work and seen that the horror geek was live and I couldn't just sit down and join with everybody! Thank you for this one sir!
Nah. Dawn is still better. Outside of Bub, there isn't a single memorable zombie here...sure they all look better FX-wise...but there's no sense that these were real people before they were zombies - none of them have any individual character (compare them to Hare Krishna, Nurse, Airport, kids, obese guy, etc. in Dawn). The zombies here are just the weather...like a storm in a Gothic that forces all the diverse characters to spend the night in the haunted castle together so we can watch them consume each other with their character flaws. Unfortunately none of these characters or their flaws are as interesting as those that came before. Sarah is at best a discount Fran, and Rhodes is just Cooper with a gun and some lackeys. The rest of the cast is utterly forgettable...Hell, even Johnny with 5 minutes of screen time is more interesting than the cardboard characters in this movie.
@@jackmars931 disagree, a lot of these zombies have looks of agony on their faces ( bandana chick is my fav) the details of how they died you can see it on most of them. You get soldier zombies, a clown, a ballerena, a dude with a cigar in his mouth, dishes zombie, a football player... among others. If you are comparing zombies day is gonna win, which film is better is up to personal opinion. one is much darker and one is kinda funny, action packed but also pretty creepy too. I love both of em anyway though
I saw this movie when I was 14 and those hands bursting from the wall made me flinch so hard I had a slight case of whiplash for a few days. Great video, dude.
That atmosphere of this movie is amazing. It provides a constant feeling of anxiety and suspense. Its just great. Savini really did kill it in this movie. I love it

Perfect choice for review given the events of the past week, HG. I'm definitely in the Day camp as far as my fav Romero Dead movie. It's not just the fx, it's the acting, writing and pacing.
This was more than worth the wait. As a senior I can attest to being parallel parking challenged, and there are days I've woken up looking, and feeling, like some of these zombies when I haven't had my Geritol. Cat Stevens, hell yeah, baby it's a wild world, and George Carlin was the best. Thanks for the laughs, every review is better than the last. Take care.
I'll cop to not being a great parallel parker either. The good thing about Florida is there aren't very many places where you ever have to do it. I've literally done it four times in my life.
Day spun the premise of Dawn into a different direction, truly introducing the idea that humankind's worst enemy is itself within the zombie apocalypse genre.
I remember really liking this movie, I need to watch it again, it's been a long time since I've seen it, but great review, always love the puns and jokes. Love the Resident Evil 4 reference, my favorite game of all time!
It's not better than 'Dawn' but is a worthy successor. Also, this movie inspired so many more ideas/ movies and videogames that if I had to name them all it would be impossible. I love how the humanity in 'Bub' was explored and the special effects are something to behold. Good writing too. I love the fact you're reviewing one of my favourite zombie movies. God bless, Mike. Stay geeky!💪🙏
In recent years Day Of The Dead has become my go to Zombie film, much like a comfort movie oddly enough. I love the way that the characters prove that even during a Zombie apocallypse people still find ways to mess things up among themselves. The make-up fx are tremendous and look great even by modern standards. This is probably George Romero's most well made Zombie film with great acting across the board, tight direction, fabulous make-up and fx and a brilliant music soundtrack to top it off. A fitting end to the original Dead trilogy. Great review, highly entertaining and re-watchable 👍
My high school girlfriend and I laughed when we rented this b/c Rhodes looked exactly like my then boss...we called him “Evil Tony Curtis” (...Christ we were young)!

I once read the original script to "Day of the Dead", some elements did make it into the remake with Dennis Hopper, I believe. And Romero introduces a strange religious element (not in keeping with dawn) that the infected when given the last rites can't resurrect as zombies. It also dd feature domesticated zombies, who were trained not to attack certain colored vests.
OMG, you fantastically tied in "Fido", I had a feeling, no more than a feeling, that it would get on here somehow, PERFECT! Right before you said it I was like,"That sounds like Fido, or Fido would work here", and BLAMMO! You did it! I bow to you, sir, KING of the horror! Back to the GOOOORRREEEE! You're the best, my man...
Mike, you're the shit!!! I love your commentaries. I was surprised when you didn't comment on that awesome overhead shot of the dead in the city in the opening scene, though. That would have been equally worthy of any comical quip or a respectful comment you would have made. BTW I'm five months older than you. I do remember Cat Stevens. Guess we're both old!!
Night is always going to be my favourite, because you feel that claustrophobia like you are locked in that house with the survivors. However, if its just between Dawn and Day then Dawn is my favourite, hands down. Yes the effects are better in Day, but Dawn has the more realistic story, to me anyways. I can relate better to the Dawn story. And it has that added reminder of 'even when you might be safe from the dead, you still have to fear the living'. That is kind of in Day as well, but its more a case of constant close quarter craziness. And as much as I know most people prefer the original, I actually prefer the remake of Dawn to the original Dawn. I find it far more unforgiving in its demonstration that the world is done for. Its just straight up zombies brutalizing humans. And come on, Johnny Cash's 'When the Man comes Around' intro music . . . just perfection.
At sometime about 20 years ago I watched Day when I had caught a nasty cold. Since then it has become a weird tradition to watch Day every time I am bedridden with a flu or cold. I totally agree that Dawn is the better movie (to be fair I consider Dawn to be one of the best movies of the 1970s), but I enjoy the hell out of Day and it is for above reasons the one movie of the original trilogy that I have rewatched the most. What I would give to see the original vision that Romero had in mind ... Keep up the good work, Mike!!
no, but it's still a damn fascinating film. Has a mythic quality. I think Bub is actually the protagonist, in that he goes through an arc and reclaims part of his humanity, whereas all the main character's motivations are really static & unchanging...
@@TheHorrorGeek it's really an anomaly for the genre in the way it tells this super bleak story in as lighthearted a way as possible, presumably out of consideration for the audience. Feels more like a piece of 70s cinema in that way, and sometimes like a silent film, even.
Short answer: i think it is. I think it shows a more complex subtext, it's got a more nihilist aura and it's more claustrophobic, both phisically and psychologically speaking. I love the way it devastates humanity and how it suffocates the viewer. I also love its approach to God-like science and its dark sides, that is why I put this movie close to Cronenberg's masterpieces. Last but not least, it is a true "SPLAAATTER THAT MATTERRRRS". Btw, I can't wait to watch this video. You've been one of the greatest (yet few) things 2020 dragged into my life! Cheers from Italy
I’ve been watching for a while. With no comments. Love all of your videos. You had to do this movie. This is just an absolute classic. I’m such a huge Romero fan. Thank you so much!
I love Day of the Dead. Night is my favorite. Dawn is a true masterpiece. But I absolutely love Day's vision of the world, the characters, the claustrophobia, and the script. Great movie. All three are fantastic.
Just the way the zombies take out the soldiers was just…ridiculously awesome!! The make up and effects are fantastic. As the one guy gets his head ripped off and the change in his voice box still get me.
My video is this title would have just been me saying, "yes." Somehow I always found the commentary in Day of the Dead more substantial than Dawn, which I know is kind of a controversial thing to say. Neither is lacking in that way, but Day always just felt so real to me.
I've been waiting impatiently for this video, so, I'm glad it's here, now. Thanks, Mike! I've always instinctively preferred Day of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead above Dawn of the Dead but the not by a huge amount, as Dawn of the Dead is a masterpiece itself. I love them all.
Day is the greatest zombie film of all time. The ONLY scene from Dawn that is equal is the opening TV Station scene... The best apocalyptic scene ever put to film.
I don't know how I have missed your channel for so long but I am very glad I stumbled upon it. I saw Day of the Dead in the theater when it came out. No one under 17 admitted. Luckily I had just turned 17! I always thought Dawn of the Dead was the ultimate zombie film but over the years I have really come to appreciate Day more. They both rule. Love your content, keep up the good work!
Day of dead is my personal favorite of the trilogy and not just because I enjoy the more dark and claustrophobic tone of the film but also because you can see Romero's progression as a film maker and even as a person. Especially thought the portrayal of Sarah as literally the strongest character in the film opposed to Barbra and Francine being weaker characters in night and dawn. I feel Savini also carried this idea over into the night of the living dead 1990 version with how Barbra was portrayed more like Sarah.
Man, I cannot tell you how badly I miss both Carlin and Romero. I think about what they would have to say about the current times all the time. Great vid!
Day is my favorite Zombie movie of all time, but this love needed over a decade to grow. The fact, Tom Savini shocked the world with his evolutionary ability to create the best violence and gore effects others not even dreamed of becomes crystal clear first time watching. For me, Tom Savini is one of the most important architects of Horror. Without him the over the top violent and bloody Horrormovies, that we love, wouldn't be the same. He is one of the Icons like Romero, Hooper, Craven or Cronenberg.
Hi Mike. I've been AWOL due to some health issues, been its great to see you're still doing great work. A donation is coming this weekend. Well done buddy! With regard to this movie, I may be in a minority, but not only is this my favourite zombie movie, it's also my favourite horror movie. It's just all the amazing characters, foreboding atmosphere, and entrails galore! My favourite character is Steele. I know he's a real asshole, but he's also a really funny asshole. RIP George. You invented a genre, made the best zombie movies of all time, the most intelligent vampire movie of all time, and the most underrated book adaption of all time. You made social commentary thrilling and chilling, and you had ideals the were an inspiration to us all. You were a genuinely a good and decent man who walked the walk, and you will always be missed! RIP G
Tom Savini's effects work is the best in the series (and probably his career) but I still enjoy Dawn a lot more. It's a shame Romero couldn't get the financing for the original scripted version.
@@jacksonia7724 You can find the script online pretty easily. Basically Romero wanted a $7 million budget for the original script because it was much bigger in scope. He wanted to show how they were training a zombie army to fight the zombie hordes. The studio didn't want to spend that money with the amount of gore in the film so they dropped the budget to $3.5 million and cut those scenes. A lot of the unused ideas ended up in Land of the Dead ($15 million budget and released by Universal).
One moment from that script always comes back to me and there's some evil doctor (who changed for the actual film) and he ties one female survivor to a post and forgets she's there or something, and then the zombies break in (as they always do). Just the thought of that stuck with me.
It's just one of those things I've always wondered about. I figure he meant they really made it to the island, but the way he cuts it, you could wonder if she actually died there and these were her last thoughts like An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge.
@@TheHorrorGeek dude... you've got my thoughts rolling now. very interesting theory! Some say the calendar was a reference for their eventual doom as well. there is a lot of subtle little things to pick up on
George Romero talked about Day of the Dead at a convention a few years back. He said for years he was disappointed by Day because it wasn't really what he wanted to make due to the budget but in the years since it had become one of his favourites for what he did after all and the eventual fan love of the movie. On a side note, how could you not mention that Joe Pilato passed out when he gave the "choke on them" line because the organs they used were very rotten after a weekend where the fridge they were in had been unplugged. That really sold the scene!
And all his zombie works deserve a good review. But how many people never even knew he did non walking corpse related cinema? There were quite a few I didn't realize were his. Martin was very unique, maybe most original vampire flick ever. And some of those razor blade moments... seemed real enough to be truly disturbing.
Dawn of the Dead I felt had better pacing and more story to it, I guess the fact that it's set mid-way through the ongoing outbreak kind of helps with it. It was more easily able to be relatable than Day of the Dead because it had more of 'what would you do' when the zombie outbreak happens. There's more moral ambiguity that is even discussed throughout the film. Day however I feel is a more full on zombie film, again helping the fact it set at the end of the outbreak when the vast majority of the world is now part of the Living Dead, it's more of a bleak apocalypse. Has far more zombie related stuff going on and of course the GORE & special effects is on a new level. I like both movies, but for different reasons.
Day of the Dead was my favourite until I watched Dawn of the Dead extended cut... and now I’d say Dawn is my favourite. But they are both good. Hell, I might change my mind now if I watched Day.
Brilliant film and one of my favourite zombie films by George Romero. Dark, claustrophobic and brutal but it had some brilliant social commentary too and very memorable characters plus some very quotable dialogue. Big shout out to Tom Savini and his crew for the awesome gore effects too. May have to give this another watch soon. Cheers for another awesome review dude, hope you're staying safe and well Best Wishes Chris

@@nameredacted1176 I'd vote for Bub. He'd probably fix our country real quick......or chomp down on his vice president. Either way, it'd be entertaining.

Day Of The Dead is amazing. Hated it when I first saw it, but gave it another chance and it’s become a personal favorite.
Yup. Same here. Hated it after I first watched it but I grew to really appreciate the entire film.
I loved it the first time I saw it
Joseph Pilato’s performance in this is so underrated. People often forget solid acting is what makes real horror work. I remember when I was a kid I found him so intimidating and scary. RIP buddy. You were not appreciated enough.

Captain Rhodes is the most underrated villain in any horror movie.
True but I knew even as a kid that he was just looking out for his men.
until he wasn't
He delivered some good lines.
J**gle bunny head😂 wouldn't get away with that now
The kids remember Cat Stevens as Yusuf Islam.
'sit down or I'll have you shot' is the new 'coffee's for closers"
Haha! It really is like the Baldwin scene. That's fantastic.
I actually like this the best of the Dead trilogy. The effects were juicy and they still stand up today.
The effects are amazing even today for sure.
Honestly Day of the Dead is a genuine horror masterpiece. The ACTING!! Is so damn intense. The gore and music impressive. Its a depressing flick though, so I can't watch it very often. But then Night and Dawn are depressing too. Brilliant though
The main characters were likable, rhodes was a proper bastard!
Taso Stavrakis aka Private Torrez was one of the most disturbing death scenes. Ive spoken to him on several occasions about this movie. Hes a really cool guy!!! He opened up his own Ren Festival and he also has a death scene in Dawn of the Dead, he played the sledgehammer guy that got his guts ripped out
Answer: Yes (not by much though)
They’re both excellent and genre-defining if you ask me, but the sheer sense of dread, bleakness, and confined madness in Day tops it out for me. I totally understand why someone would put Dawn on top though, so I never question it when people do.
It depends what you prefer - you want zombie action? Or human dialogue / conflict plus zombies
I can't wait for this, so I can get my mind off the current insanity. Patiently waiting for your review.

Dude I totally missed the live! I was getting ready for work and seen that the horror geek was live and I couldn't just sit down and join with everybody! Thank you for this one sir!
No worries -- there'll be more live ones. :-)
Night of the Living Dead is a classic.
Dawn of the Dead is a masterpiece.
But Day of the Dead is the all around best.

Perfect choice for review given the events of the past week, HG. I'm definitely in the Day camp as far as my fav Romero Dead movie. It's not just the fx, it's the acting, writing and pacing.
Yeah, I had no idea that this video was going to be this timely. I mean, I started making it before last week happened... :p
Exactly
No , it's not better than Dawn . But it's very ,very good . The Dead trilogy is excellent so it's a moot point to compare them .
My thoughts exactly!
If I had to boil it down to a simple value judgment- both Night and Dawn are endlessly rewatchable. Day is not.
Day is the best movie of them all.
Fair but in my opinion Day is better than Dawn. Even more layered.
well said
This was more than worth the wait.

My favorite from the trilogy, can't wait to get off work and watch this.
Let's get to the gore!!

Thanks! And me either. 😂 I’m over here putting out high quality dad jokes - where are my million subs? 😂
I think at the end of the original script, someone dies, but DOESNT come back-leaving the survivors to think that it's all over finally.
Haha! I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to mention Fido. 😂

Thank you! I'm a one man show writing wise most of the time...so I always miss some good jokes. :p
I totally agree that Dawn is the better movie (to be fair I consider Dawn to be one of the best movies of the 1970s),
but I enjoy the hell out of Day and it is for above reasons the one movie of the original trilogy that I have rewatched the most.

I'm with you on all counts here.
@@TheHorrorGeek literally was watching it at 3 am, lol

My video is this title would have just been me saying, "yes."
Somehow I always found the commentary in Day of the Dead more substantial than Dawn, which I know is kind of a controversial thing to say.
And the first one I ever saw was Dawn.

Love your content, keep up the good work!
Thank you! I'm glad you found me -- and even gladder you like the videos. I've got lots of new stuff on the way!
Solid points!
Man, I cannot tell you how badly I miss both Carlin and Romero. I think about what they would have to say about the current times all the time. Great vid!
Thanks Allen! I wish both of those guys were still with us. The world is a darker place without them.

Tom Savini's effects work is the best in the series (and probably his career) but I still enjoy Dawn a lot more. It's a shame Romero couldn't get the financing for the original scripted version.
I'm with you 100% here.
What was the original script?
@@jacksonia7724 You can find the script online pretty easily. Basically Romero wanted a $7 million budget for the original script because it was much bigger in scope.
He wanted to show how they were training a zombie army to fight the zombie hordes. The studio didn't want to spend that money with the amount of gore in the film so they dropped the budget to $3.5 million and cut those scenes. A lot of the unused ideas ended up in Land of the Dead ($15 million budget and released by Universal).
@@Ataraxia462 damn. That would’ve been cool to see
One moment from that script always comes back to me and there's some evil doctor (who changed for the actual film) and he ties one female survivor to a post and forgets she's there or something, and then the zombies break in (as they always do). Just the thought of that stuck with me.

"Only with way more zombies, and way fewer furries." Quote of the day.
Maybe they'll repurpose these zombies and have them working at a grocery store like they did on Shaun of the Dead.
bub can run his own store, by zombies for zombies. lmao
This was a good one. I dont think I've ever seen a Romero flick I didn't like. Should review a non zombie one sometime
Would love to do Martin and The Crazies at some point. The zombie stuff just does better from a channel growth perspective.
These videos are just such a delight man. Great work

@@nameredacted1176 I'm just tired of my cynicism meter having the needle not just buried, but spun back around to the start.
Great video Mike!!!!
Thank you!
No, not by a long shot. 'Dawn' is one of the best movies of the 70s, period, not just one of the best horror movies. 'Day' was a massive disappointment to me in '85, and remains so.
I think day is an amazing movie, but ok.
YES! Day of the Dead is my #1 zombie film. It might be a bit dialogue heavy but I think it was absolutely fascinating to see the military’s failed attempt at finding a solution. John’s monologue to Sarah while they’re drinking is so chilling, especially with the soundtrack.
I can already give you my answer and it’s no DAWN Of the Dead 78 is the better of these 2
