In Lindsay Ellis’ video about women in Transformers, she mentions that everything in the script suggests that Megan Fox’s character is meant to be smart, and taken seriously. But the way she is filmed completely betrays that. This is why I hate it when people are like “well she knew what she was signing up for, why is she mad about the way she’s being portrayed”. I’m sure she read the script, liked the character, and was then betrayed by Michael Bay’s direction

Exactly. If they had a nerdy slightly overweight woman in the role, the character would have been accepted entirely different by the crowds. And sadly, if she had been filmed in the exact same way as Fox's character, the men would have likely hated it. Cuz you're only allowed to sexualize what they find attractive.
I am a lesbian, I find Megan Fox to be very attractive, and yet when watching her roles that was just an additional bonus to otherwise brilliant characters. Someone doesn't have to 'just' be hot. They can be all sorts of other things first.

Comparing actors/actresses to athletes makes absolutely no sense. Yes age matters for athletes because they are pushing their bodies and performing amazing feats with their bodies. We still have actors/actresses well into their 90s because well they can hold up better at an old age with their craft than an athlete.

Everyone talks about how men treat attractive women, but there needs to be a whole other movement that holds *women* accountable for the way they treat fellow women they find "unapproachable" simply because they're attractive. The way some women feel justified in treating other women just because they're intimidated by the others looks, is absolutely appalling. And a downright childish response to jealousy. Men aren't the only ones who can mistreat a pretty woman. Okay. Have a nice life.

And actress I used to hate until I started watching videos like this about her, and now I realise how intelligent and brave and strong she is through it all. She is beautiful and that doesn’t mean other women should demonise her. The world sucks for all of us as women so we need to stand together and fight against these “not like other girls” tropes that pit us against each other.

Yes, the worst a stranger can do to is catcall an attractive woman or post thirst comments and that is still coming from a position of being smitten by said woman's beauty. It recognises that the woman has value, no matter how shallow that valuation is.
But women bullying women more attractive than them, I find that way beneath catcalling because of the malice involved. I haven't read it yet but this was basically the plot of Malena iirc, the entire village's women making her life miserable out of envy. This is worse now with online bullying.
Edit: IK Malena eventually got raped but that was way after her detractors and gossips ruined her reputation to the point that admiration for her has turned into contempt.

Women are hardest critics towards each other instead of uniting against sexism and the patriarchy. Feminism should be highly inclusive (also for men who understand and want to participate). its crazy how you guys seem to read my mind! I watched Jennifer's body last night and was binge watching interviews of megan fox when this came out; when your bridget jones video came out, I'd watched it the night before :,)) this analysis was really strong in showing megan fox's savvy cultivation of her career, and the archetypes she plays; which I admit that I overlooked because I was so focused on her role in Jennifer's Body. I did want to say that even though her role in Jennifer's Body possesses similar characteristics to her other roles, I don't think it should be lumped in with the 'cool girl' persona so many male directors wanted her to cultivate. Jennifer's Body is uniquely through a female lens, and I think because of its depth and the cult-like following it now has, it should be treated as a really stand out megan fox role. I've commented this several times, but I would love a Jennifer's Body analysis from the take!! I've always found that you explore themes and characters and cinematography in more depth when you hone in on one movie. As much as I appreciate your current focus on tropes and character studies, I really miss your era of making film analyses for specific movies and one on Jennifer's Body would be at the top of my list for requests!! If you don't make it, I will! There's infinite things I could say about that movie

I don't consume a lot of celeb news now but i can only imagine before, the coverage of them caused us to loath women like Megan that then caused media to keep bashing on them because we kept consuming it to validate our hatred and it became a never ending cycle. I remember I used to be like "lol Taylor Swift is so emotional with all the breakup songs" when I was a middleschooler and probably into my highschool days. I had internalized misogyny and was a participant to the cycle that kept "reminding me" that she was somehow shallow. The revelation we treat women poorly in media is recent but I'm glad we're reflecting on how we mistreated women celebs then and how we can notice it now like with Megan Thee Stallion.

It's hard being beautiful. People desperately want to push you into a box, so they can disrespect you or limit you. It's crazy because they are drawn in, but then become resentful. People can be so envious, they act like you should be ashamed of your beauty. You can't be funny, smart, confident.... It's mad. You just have to know and own who you are and give the world a middle finger.

There's plenty of examples and it's just sad how the misogynistic approach is perpetuated, with Margot Robbie, Emilia Clarke, and the list goes on

I'm 2 weeks older than Megan, so when this was happening, I remember being very pissed off that people were calling her ungrateful for having the audacity to have agency. Especially with how people ignored the fact that she was a child in Bad Boys 2. Megan was a 10 grader in a bikini in a club and nobody cared.
Growing up in the late 90s/early 2000s, girls all over but especially in the media were being vilified for just existing. I happy that people are realizing that she's been right this whole time.

This actually got me a little emotional. I'm 27 now and I first saw her in an Olsen movie and then in Teenage drama queen and thought this girl is a great mean girl. Then i loved her in transformers and Jennifer's body and so on. I'm aware of the articles coming out now defending her but seeing it all at once was a little heartbreaking. I remember being so confused as to why people starting hating her for being on too many magazine covers and then getting pissed off when I heard of the open letter that I knew was a lie. I loved her sarcastic comments and always thought she was hilarious. I think because I was bullied around that time and it felt like she was being bullied too that I really came to just like her a lot. It all just seemed unfair. It seemed like nothing she did was ever good enough for anyone so I rooted for her. I'm a Haitian American woman and I felt like I could relate to her in some ways. I'm excited to see her in different roles now that it seems she's getting a 2nd chance to be the actress she strives to be.
