Thank you John! Definitely a favorite of mine for 2021
Beautifully done.
Thank you
Well done! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
This is fantastic. I’ve started painting and I still have the mindset of when I used colour pencils so every hair has to be in place. My pieces seem too perfect if you know what I mean. This is what I strive for, be more about tones and values rather than every little detail. Yours is fantastic ❤
I totally know what you mean. It took me quite some time to start painting fur and hair in chunks as apposed to individual hairs. it defiantly speeds up the process lol!
Great demonstration 🎶♥️🎵
Thank you!
Great work. ❤❤
Thank you! Cheers!
You should be very proud

Nice!!
Thank you!
Very nice painting!
Thank you!
wonderful...but I want to hear details about what has changed for you, what you are going to do differently...Process? Palette? Really nice outcome...
At the time of making this video I didn't realize how vague I was about what changed in my practice, so here's a little summary.
At the time of this painting I was working on 3 goals: efficiency, accuracy, and bold, confident brush work.
I had been working towards this for a year and it wasn't until this painting that it finally all clicked.
This was the point in my painting career where it all changed.
Great job!
Thank you!
doing my first comission and it's a dog portrait, so I was rly nervous but ur video rlly helped me get going
Thank you and I am so glad this video helped you with your painting! Thanks for the feedback!
Thank you for sharing this video, i want to work with those kind of brushstrokes too (learining ;-) )
Thanks for watching! It's so satisfying once you incorporate them into your practice, and much faster to!
❤❤❤
🙏🙏
I just watched your video --- I have been doing some dog/cat portraits and definitely want to loosen up as I'm extremely tight and detailed. Which as you say, my customers have liked, but want to change it up. Your video has inspired me and it was an amazing piece. Would have liked to see the photo you were working from or did I miss that? Thank you again for sharing.
Glad it was helpful! It was a game changer for me when it comes to my technique and now that I have done it for a year I will never look back!
I didn't believe i showed it in this video which is something I can fix for the next one. thanks for the tip!
I would love to see your animal paintings before you discovered this technique. I will look online if I can find any that you have posted. I guess you can't insert a picture here. Happy Painting!
❤
❤
Love it! The brush work is spot on. May I ask what brand of brushes you are using?
Thanks so much!
I use Rosemary and Co. Ivory long flat brushes.
👏
🙌🙌
What type of hard board are you using. I think I might try this. Beautiful artwork!
Thank you! I am using an artisan wood panel. you can get them at most art stores!
Prachtig schilderij!
Thank you!
Just gorgeous. Do you use a projector to transfer the image to the substrate? If so, may I ask which one? I have the Artograph but don't find it works that well
Just charcoal transfer paper
@@LukeDurdin Probably the best way!
Nice cow.
🐄
So what was it? Did I miss something? Is the the way you paint background or use of new type of brushes?

What type of brushes are you using? I am trying achieve exactly what you are talking about.
Rosemary and Co. Ivory long flats!
Lots of spring and a fantastic brush
can you do it in acrylics ? thanx
I paint using a method called "Allaprima" meaning I paint wet paint into wet paint.
This is not achievable with acrylics (without some sort of medium) as they dry to fast.
What is your process in tracing? Tracing paper or xerox print?
Oh , by the way I am in awe of your brush strokes, I do have a commission of a blck dog to paint and first time in using oils.
Just charcoal transfer paper!
Thank you 🙏 and best of luck
....... So what changed?

Sorry not my type of music, too loud. Painting, like the eyes the best
I appreciate the feedback 🙏
Wonderful painting but did not give any technical information or specifics at all on how he accomplished it.
Thank you for the feedback.
Not sure what you mean by working "efficiently". Are you referring to your competency? That comes with experience. I wouldn't classify it as a goal, necessarily. Or perhaps you were referring to waste. But wasteful of what? Time? Materials? Labor? I would agree that brush strokes and accuracy are important. But why does 'efficiency' matter all that much when it comes to technique?
I think you kinda answered it within your own comment.
it just depends on the artist and where they are in their career.
For some context:
When I was doing this painting I was starting to build a career as free lance artist and had a lot of commissions on my plate. at the time, spending 20 hours on a commission, in conjunction with my prices was not a good business strategy.
I felt that I could be me efficient with my process to shorten the amounts of time required to complete these commissions. this involved streamlining a process, being more bold and loose with my brushwork, and more back end stuff when it comes to scheduling and client communications.
What came of this new approach was a new technique that i still use to this day, bold blocky loose brush work.
@@LukeDurdin - Thanks for clarifying. Makes sense now.
Do you not have time to actually draw it rather than trace?
Tracing will always be a subject for debate.
If this was a personal piece, absolutely!
However, this was a commissioned piece.
Instead of spending 4-5 hours drawing, checking, and re drawing, I can trace the image in 15 minutes.
If the outcome is ultimately the same, there is no point in spending the extra time drawing by hand.
Didn't say HOW the painting changed your life or practice. Basically click bait.
I mentioned that at the time of this painting I was working on 3 goals: efficiency, accuracy, and bold, confident brush work.
I mentioned I had been working towards this for a year and it wasn't until this painting that it finally all clicked.
Well, this video was a whole lot of talking whilst saying nothing. Could have just uploaded the video without the audio as it would have made 0 difference.
Thanks for the feedback 🙏
I enjoyed the audio, it’s really great to hear other artists actually describe their struggles. I could totally relate re confident brushwork.
Beautiful work
It's the narration that really touched my heart here. As a fellow artist, I am struggling along this same path. My work is nowhere near as masterful, but you know, goals!
Good work, Luke.
Thank you!
You used James' Gurney Windmill Principle!
