I lived 15 years as a tenant in the back of a home of my elderly friend who was a great gardener who taught me a lot. I helped her with worm composting, pruning the raspberries, and kiwis, which stimulated the growth of the kiwis. We'd harvest the veggies in the Fall, rake leaves, etc. She'd later plan her Spring garden and plot it on paper; grew her tomatoes from seed, etc. I had my own patio garden too. My elderly neighbor had to move to assisted care a couple of years ago while I now live in an apartment without a garden of my own, so I vicariously enjoy watching your simple and sustainable living and all the things you do in your beautiful fairyland woods and cottage. Thank you for providing me with the simple pleasure of watching. Jenny

How special to learn from someone. It’s all about passing on the knowledge and skills to all.

It`s great when you can learn from someone. But sometimes you have to live with people with totally different lifestyles and views. They neither can pass on the knowledge nor try to learn something new with you. They are just used to their destructive behaviours towards people and the nature.

Since i'm slowly implementing a sustainable life routines; the one thing i did was go out to gather long pine needles before our snow storm hit. I was able to really focus for the first time in a very long time on how this activity was really making me feel. not just about the activity itself but about life in general. As I did this I was reminded of you and this channel and the video on purposely doing things slowly. As I purposely slowed my activity, I found my self relaxing, smiling, and not wanting my bucket to fill so I could stay in that moment longer. It was almost child like in the feeling. I have struggled my whole life to figure out who I am inside and to help the child there to heal from childhood hurts and become strong. Then one activity of gathering pine needs brings all the videos I've watched and articles I've read start to make sense and these ideas start to feel like home. Thank you for all the video you have put out. keep teaching others how to slowdown and be content with simple things.

Here in India we are celebrating Diwali- The festival of lights. However, the celebration is low key due to Pandemic, but people are feeling love, warmth of relationships more this year because they are missing out on that. We don't have a cruel winter here in India in most od the States. So we just enjoy the nip in the air.

Strong winds over Lake Ontario today. A dry run for the winter to come with ice and snow that settles over the land and water. Snow tires for the car and snow shovels now out of the sheds close ro the door. Sun sets at 5pm and we settle in to our cozy homes. City, village or country cottage, there is a scurry of activity as everything settles in for winter.

The coronavirus pushed me out of the big city and it's probably the best thing that happened to me this past decade. Unfortunately nothing is perfect and finding THE perfect place to live in my new little town didn't happen. So I'm left without a garden, and not living as close to nature as I had intended but I'm happy nonetheless. I spent the last 3 months settling down, cooking, and enjoying my family after living far away from them for 2 decades. I know this new chapter of my life will only get better and I'm looking forward to it!

Lovely as always my friend! I made a small donation for the cows. A Vedic farm in Ireland, how awesome is that. I read through their website--the names and celebrations aren't familiar to me, so it's a tad confusing (until I learn more), but you can sense that they are loved, cared for and respected. The plight of cows in factory farms here in the US was one of the main reasons I became a vegetarian/aspiring vegan.

We live in the suburbs of Chicago but we are doing much to same things as you. Planting bulbs, raking leaves for compost, turning compost for spring, collecting as many dead twigs and branches as we can for our 2 wood burning stoves for the winter. You can live simply wherever you are and we've landed in the suburbs so we've tried to do that here. Where you are is much prettier but you don't have to have picturesque to live simply. Here in the northern 🇨🇦ian wilderness we do a lot of similar winter prep mostly during the month of October. In a typical winter the snow will cover the ground for 5-6 months so we need to have everything put away and tidied up... otherwise we will not see it under the blanket of the thick white stuff. Great video today Niamh, thank-you for this one. I hope you are doing well during “Lasa gwineekwx” (this is the Gitksan term for the season of the “getting ready for the cold” moon. Hi Niamh, I'm spending as much time outdoors as possible myself, as temperatures here still allow that. We're been preparing for winter though, as cold is coming up soon here as well.
We're preparing the winter garden and piling the logs in the woodshed so that they'll be dry during rainy days and handy to pick. Also, we're stocking up on dry and long lasting food should we have another lockdown like the one you're having in Ireland, and taking care of our animals' shelters, repairing what needs to be repaired or building new ones. It's a very spiritual time, isn't it? So calm, and silent and peaceful and good for reflections upon life's true values. A big hug to you, pretty fairy! 🧡💛💚

Your videos are so restful and beautiful. You have made a good life working in tandem with nature. An important lesson for us all. This fall, I'm using natural resources to enrich the garden beds and have them grow stronger for next spring. I collect great piles of leaves for compost and mulch, and a kind friend shares the "bounty" from her guinea pigs and rabbits. It's satisfying to keep so much out of the waste stream and reuse it instead.

I loved your words about the value of “cow poo and dry sticks”. We completely undervalue simple things like that when we live so far from needing to pay attention to some of the many important aspects of life. Not everyone has the opportunity to live where we can be more simple, yet there are still ways for us to be more in touch with the rhythms of the seasons. I was with my 3rd grade students yesterday in our outdoor classroom. There had been a frost the night before and much of the ground still had not been touched by the sun. I took the children for a brief walk around the campus (practicing our quiet as we walked by many other outdoor classrooms), and we stopped often to marvel at the frost painted on the edges of the leaves that had fallen, or the sparkle of it on the wood chips or the grass. We admired the colors that the leaves are turning and wondered how many leaves would be left when we returned from our one week break. Even taking those ten minutes out of “learning” to observe brings a quiet to the children and a respect and love for what is going on around them (and me). The learning of being in quiet, of respect for nature are far bigger lessons than anything I can bring to them in a formal way.

I love how videos like hers and also your channel stick with us (for some odd reason, I think of that lady and her minimal life and off-grid living daily) and help me make more mindful, minimal, sustainable choices- not always... but one small act at a time.

Here in the California Sierra near Angels Camp making sure one has enough firewood to get us to April is always a priority. And having a winter garden with root vegetables is a favorite of mine.
Thankfully even with snow as long as the day is sunny I can still line dry the laundry. Love the smell of laundry dried on a clothesline.

What wonderful messages you conveyed in this video. We have an animal farm sanctuary a couple of hours away from me. They are great organizations to donate to and help. I don't heat solely with wood but my cottage gets chilly when it hits -40c here in our Canadian winters so I understand picking twigs and how grateful I am to have them...gifts from Mother Earth when you are cold.

Gosh chopping down the raspberry canes brought me back to that wonderful summer month I had when I went home to spend time with family. I would wake up, walk the dog with mum or dad and pick fresh raspberries off the Bush for breakfast. We'd eat outside and it was glorious.
This year has really shifted my priorities and helped me see what I really NEED to feel sane. Living in a city with no outside space and without markers that make it feel like MY space (I love pink, my flat is blue) has been hard to confront everyday for a year. I miss the companionship of having a pet, I miss home and friends and family. I miss feeling like I've got everything under control (which I never really did anyway).
But I've gained an understanding of how to combat this loneliness or dilute it. The hard part has been forcing myself to implement my self care, recently tho I've been doing nanowrimo and it's been joyful diving into my story again and feeling excited about my characters.
Idk viewing 2020 as an exercise in sanity has been a good way to look at it.

Just finished preparing our garden for the winter also. Using the same amendments plus a layer of wood chips. All of our wood is ready for winter plus the twigs for fire starting. Seeds are already here for next spring and fruit trees & berry shrubs will be here in late March. Still time to prepare the ground where they will be planted before the freeze. Putting in a tray of enchiladas for our meal then sitting down for some sock knitting.

I read someone's theory that modern forests, in addition to things like controlled burns as the Indigenous Americans did, grew with humans collecting firewood like you are, taking out the fallen dry tinder for our use, and our lack of doing so in the modern world contributes to wildfires being so bad. And it just makes sense. We think we are apart from nature, but we are a part of nature, and we've been interacting with it since the dawn of humans, not just the dawn of the industrial revolution, so of course we impacted things before.
