    Good video. Anyone with common knowledge of the 5vy and 4c8 should know this. With that said, the 07-08 4c8 is an absolute amazing machine, timeless even with today’s standards. Bike is so raw

    my rotor blew off a few months ago, a pain in the ass to remove all the shrapnel of the engine, and an expensive repair

    Bought bike couple months ago and it had come apart. Guy changed oil and put in new battery so I wouldn't notice till after. Luckily I'm a mechanic so while fixing it was a pain in the ass I did get it all done. The bike runs like a champ now. Flywheel needed parts as well while I was in there. Overall I have $7,000 total in the bike. So while it isnt a steal it didn't completely rip me a new one.

    I will have to do this on my '04 R1 soon, not looking forward to it at all.
    Not sure the previous owner did it or not.

      A word of warning, try your best not to lose parts into the pan. I now have an impossible oil leak because the O-ring on the weep pipe didn't' seat properly in the oil pan. I need to take the oil pan off again.

    My 08 R1 started getting mysterious running, starting and charging issues. When I took it to a competent Yamaha Service Centre they spotted the issue. They took the stator flywheel rotor apart and showed me the broken magnet shrapnel everywhere. It stuck to literally everything inside the engine.
    I had to have the engine stripped and cleaned. Yamaha gave me parts at half price and I paid an eye watering amount in labour.
    Yamaha refused to give me replacement Stator for free (bike was out of warranty), but regardless in principle it was a known fault they knew about. I paid an eye watering labour cost and it left a bad taste in my mouth.
    I was a Yamaha fan boy and was left shocked Yamaha would use cheap rubbish epoxy glue to hold the magnets in, and more shocked they knew about the issue and did not have the decency and integrity to do a free recall and replace the parts free of charge.

      Really sad to hear this story, Im surprised how bad 1000cc engines are, there are even major engine recalls on my 2008 CBR1000RR, maybe stick with 600's, never had a problem with them.

      @@sparkthego I sold that bike as it developed other issues, and got an 09 Yamaha R1 with only 50 miles on the clock. Do you know if the rotor issue affect other models too?
      I agree with you, I've had 600s and thinking back they never had any issues at all. Ever.
      My current 09 has had issues with the starter motor wearing out.

      @sparkthego  28 днів тому +1

      @@darkknight17 I'm not sure if 09 has the stator problem because the whole engine changed in 09, I don't think it has the problem but don't take my word for it, my headspace is out of R1's now.

      What mileage did this happen at. I have an 07 and I’ve been doing so much work to it over the last year as new issues arise. Also should I look into getting a different bike or once these issues are fixed will it last for a good bit.

    • @darkknight17
      @darkknight17 22 дні тому

      @@tylerblackstonne 40k miles the rotor magnets had disintegrated.
      I had the engine stripped and cleaned out and it ran fine after that but it felt 10% down on power.
      If you check the rotor before the magnets disintegrate into the engine you can replace it with an aftermarket part.
      Aside from the above, my bike ran like a fucking dream. Silky smooth panther ready to unleash. If the above issue had not happened and I'd caught it early you can get 100k miles out of it.

      @@sparkthegoour CCT are ran on oil pressure…when they start going out you hear it on cold starts. A sort of clanking, the CCT doesn’t fully engage at first…after a couple seconds it will go away because the oil pressure has built up. Once you hear this change it out with an updated model. Shouldn’t have any more probs for a very long while.

      The issue could be kind of like what I had with mine, the stator coil got screwed up and wouldn’t charge the bike. I got lucky in a sense that no magnets got sent into the engine blowing up the motor, but the problem was that the bike wouldn’t charge at all obviously. I ran it to my friend’s workshop on a full charge battery, then we just opened the case up and changed the whole stator/magneto thing with the newest magneto part that fixes the problem, and voila!

    Does anybody know around how many miles they usually fail. My 04 R1 has almost 30,000 miles on it. I’ve had it since it was new, so it’s definitely the original. I’ve known about this problem for a while. Just never got around to doing it.

      Change it now. I'm at 20k and it blew on me. You're better off changing the stator and flywheel now while it hasn't blown magnets into your engine yet. I didn't know until it happened and now I'm left taking the oil pan down and all to clean out metal shards everywhere
