  • Great Planes Super Stearman - Went straight into the ground and left a "Smoking Hole".
A faulty elevator control linkage was to blame, a solder joint failed in flight.

That’s exactly why I use 2 servos (1for each half) on my cubs. It’s a little more work but each control surface on the entire plane has a dedicated servo.

I lost a Royal Kit Army Stearman years ago to loss of Elevator. I failed to secure one of two clevises at either end of the pushrod. Pushrod vibrated into one clevis and out of the other. Plane went into a climb/ stalled/ and dove straight into the center of the runway. I rebuilt it and flew it for years after that eventually retiring it to hanging in a friends garage. I just finished this same GPSS and will pay close attention to that Elevator set up not too sure about those two collars. I will pay close attention to that! Thanks for posting!

RC Airplanes are like owning a car chasing dog. You don’t want to get too attached to them.

SOLDER. NOT. SODDER. Why solder when you can use Threaded ?.

Wow finally some pics of the actual plane... Seems poor construction of the elevator control system contributed to the unscheduled landing.

I know the sickening feeling of a dead elevator stick. 1983, .60-powered low-wing balsa sport plane. Just as the engine ran out of fuel and I prepared for a dead-stick landing (I fly gliders too) the elevator clevis separated from the control horn. With wings level the nose slowly dipped until the plane was almost 90° vertical. Toothpicks up to the wing trailing edge.
Sorry for the loss, even if 3 yrs back.

Wow, what a video and so sad for a beautiful bird. A little preflight check could have avoided all of this sorrow. I check everything before I fly especially if I fly to make up for my short comings! That was an expensive way to make up for a little D*#K!!!!! :)
