Hi Aly, I wanted to update you on a recent 6-day trip I took to California using your packing techniques. I took a Travel Pro as my carry-on and a backpack as my personal carry-on. So, I tried the 3 bottoms, 3 tops, and 3 layers. I also packed two pairs of shoes; Saucony trainers and a pair of sandals. Since I was working virtually, I also packed my 15.6 laptop, along with chargers, toiletries, and some makeup. Results: Pros first. I definitely didn't over pack as I usually do. I almost had just the right amount of clothes. I also took your advice and stuffed all my charging cables in my nylon cross body. Btw, bringing the cross body was something I hadn't done before so it was nice to have it for my glasses, phone, lip gloss, and some cash. When I packed for my return trip, it went back into my backpack. Cons: I was doing some physical work on my trip so my daily outfits got sweaty and gross. Out here in Cali the temps reached 113 degrees! So, sadly there wasn't much mixing and matching going on. My Day 1 outfit (jeans and t-shirt) got gross so I didn't wear those clothes again. Day two: I wore shorts and a blouse. 3rd Day: The shorts were still OKAY so I wore them again with a linen button down. But by Day 3, I could see I wouldn't have a clean outfit to wear home. So I bought a jogger set and hand washed a few undergarments. Overall, I was pleased that I learned to pack smarter and lighter. I hope to travel even lighter next time. My backpack and carry-on weren't heavy, but they weren't light either. Maybe I can leave my work laptop at home by accident?😜 Thanks for the tips!
I prefer 3+2+1+1 rather than 3x3: 3 tops, 2 bottoms, 1 layer, 1 sarong. You don't need as many bottoms as tops, and the same layer can be worn the whole time, or swapped/supplemented with the sarong as needed. I do this for up to 2 weeks. For 3-4 weeks, I sometimes allow myself an extra top and an extra bottom.
I agree there no need for three bottoms, or more than one outer layer unless its very, very cold. A sarong is also handy for so many things… a towel for the beach, more warmth, shade, a skirt or top etc.
That is what I did much of the time on a 9.5 hour Air France flight to France. It was a big help for my legs.🙂 On the way back, same carry-on luggage, I did not need to, as they weighed everything together, and said we had to check our carry-on bags. 😞
@@manonbourque9051 not really. Mostly vintage Eddie Bauer travel clothes collected over the years. I wish travel would be this easy. Coming from Australia I'm usually travelling 2-6 months at a time. It gets tricky with multiple climates too. I also can't get away with wearing casual as often. Would love some tips on long stay travel tips.
I had to smile when your 6 foot 9 inch husband came on the screen. My son is 6 foot 7 inches and his girl is about your height. Plus his smile is so inflectious.
Thank you, very good. For me 3 things were problems. 1- when I moved my bag to put my feet on it, the fly attendant objected n asked me to put it in the top compartment, where A- I can't reach it as I'm 4.8 foot tall, B- I needed to raise my legs re painful swelling feet. 2) I was so exhausted carrying the weight of my bag, I needed to role it. 3) where to put your bulky shoes? Especially with larger ones? But still very good, because my daughter's suitcase was lost in Europe, in her connecting flight. It wasn't found until the end of her tour, going from country to country, until the last moment, when she was going to fly home from Vienna. In one full month she was only left with her carry on, n had to buy clothes, shoes, etc which she didn't need n wasted time to do so. And mind you, luggage theft has become a thing. So, I tie a bright shouting color ribbon to my bags n suitcase, to identify it as soon as they appear, in case there are similar bags n suitcases as mine, on the rail... thank you again.
Great tips. I must get a capsule wardrobe. Another idea is to have some clothing items that you can hand wash and that dry overnight, especially basic tops. Oh snap. Just clicked on the link and I see that the wool pieces ARE fast drying. Perfect!
Looks great! Can you please do the same packing video showing the items your husband brings and how they fit in the bag? My husband it tall also and his clothes pile is twice the size of mine, even if we bring the same number and type of item.
He did one a few months ago (not sure if you've seen it): ua-cam.com/video/VYjrPQR2DcM/v-deo.htmlsi=QgNfgdRn86KAXR3a - it's not with the purple bag but a backpack that still fits as a personal item
Been using your 3x3 to pack for a trip where I am checking a bag but need to keep clothes to a limit to have room for other gear. Even though I'm bringing more clothes that the 3x3, it's a useful tool for making sure all your outfits go together with no 'orphans', so to speak. I might try the personal item for a within-Canada biz trip later in the year if I only need one pair of shoes!
Thank you for your time. I'll be traveling to Vietnam with a carry-on and personal backpack only. I'm visiting for almost two months. But I'm a single guy too. ;) Unbound Merino is just too expensive, IMHO. :)
People here complaining about the prices🙄 Is Merino wool people, it’s going to be expensive. If it’s out of your budget, accept it and move on. Is not on my budget either but I know the price is actually realistic.
Great video! Had to laugh when you brought your hubby on. I'm 5'1" also. My husband is only 6'2". But huge! LOL We definitely make a sight with our husbands :)
I love the packing videos! So many great ideas. My local airport is a hub for Avelo Airlines, a ULCC. They have so many baggage restrictions that the only way to really take advantage of the airline's great prices is to avoid all the extra fees. This is a great way to do so!
Your last tip at the end was so good - I don't know why I haven't thought of that before!! 🙈 Also, I love it every single time you show yourself next to your hubby. You guys are sooooo cute!
I hope Unbound Merino reads your comments. I'd love it if they added Plus Sized clothing (2x, 3x) to their offerings. I've wanted to buy from them for over a year, but they offer nothing in 2x or above. So, I've bought from others.
@@marytroup5216 Um, do you honestly think that people who are overweight have never thought about "dropping some weight? It's usually one of the top things on our minds! Comments like that are very rude.
My husband balked at the idea merino wool could be worn multiple days without smelling. I challenged him to wear his unbound merino wool shirt as an undershirt (it was winter) for three days. He did five but we went to the cigar bar and well merino is good but everything has it's limits (lol). I love merino wool I hate that so many companies make the shirts with shoulder seems that make it look like workout gear and not just a t shirt. I like the magenta one you had I might have to try that.
We just did a 10 night stay. We did do carry on only. I am 6’ and 1x my husband is 6’6” and my youngest son joined us. He is 7’ and 200 pounds and wears size 18 shoes. We did carryon and personal item. It is possible. I like to be in control of my luggage.
Same here. I once traveled around Mexico for 2.5 weeks with a backpack and hand-held carry-on. My shoulders and back were aching so much, I ended up buying a 20" wheeled carry-on for the return trip. But I travel solo and am only 5'2". If I had a 6'9" hubby, I could travel like she does and let him do the heavy lifting!☺
I bought an Unbound Merino wool shirt and it smelled after wearing it once. The Company was great about letting me return the item. But not being able to wear the shirt multiple time during my trip was an unplanned hassle.
I understand packing less bottoms but as guy even for a women I personally need to pack at least a different shirt for each day. I can’t wear them more than once as you sweat and stink. And same goes for sleeping shirts, socks and underwear. These items are ment for one day use. So this is very hard to do.
Great video👌👏👏♥️I am always looking for Merino wool jumpers and jackets,as you say great in any weather, even more so here in the UK🥶 and they last for years,if no one 'accidently' sticks them in the washing machine😱😲😫😭🤣🤣🤣❤
Actually a great idea. I've myself flying Frontier more often than usual and this is probably the way to go. I just hope the merino wool doesn't end up stinking fast. P.s. have you convinced Chris to do the voiceover talls video yet? 😅💕
Merino wool can be used multiple times without stinking. It never has gotten stinky, shirts nor socks, and I always travel with it. Also, a silk under layer will allow you to use the same shirt or socks multiple times, it does not stink, I promise. I wear a thin silk turtleneck under my shirt for the plane, it helps regulate your temperature, as well as keeps your travel outfit from stinking, so you can wear that on your trip.
I tried just taking a carryon bag and it was ok on the outbound trip but on the way home, they wanted me to pay for it…i wasn’t happy after all the hassle I’d been to trying to take less. I’m overweight and my clothes definitely take up a lot more room. Travelling back to 🇬🇧 I was wearing less and had my zip up top in my bag…which I think made the staff notice it. I ended up paying for priority which was cheaper than paying for it to go into the hold, plus my medication was in there, which I needed.
Everything is ok, but to be honest,if I could afford merino wool,I wouldn't save the money for booking a suitcase, so I can get my clothes in. But respect,I can't travel only with a weekender.
Aly, I carry a backpack for my carry-on which isn’t the most fashionable case. After seeing really nice totes on other UA-camr channels, I tried to find a stylish tote but after ordering/returning 5-7 totes, I gave up. I want a tote that has a shoe compartment, a padded section for my iPad or laptop, a side-pocket for my water bottle, lots of interior pockets/compartments, and a strap that will slide over my luggage handle. I also don’t want to pay over $30. I guess I want the unicorn 🦄 of totes because it doesn’t exist! 😂
You might have to ask a crafty person to make you a custom bag to fulfil your requirements, but don't pay them sweatshop wages. Or gather the materials and make it yourself.😊
I can totally relate, spent a fortune looking for the ultimate travel bag. In the end I plagerised a design by "sewingtimes" DIY Large Travel Bag ...with bottom compartment. It took me 3 hours to cut out and sew cost me less than £20 and I have been using it for 4 years now.
The personal item allowance on Swiss Air SFO to ZRH is 40 x 30 x 10 cm (16 x 12 x 4 in.), so the bag in this video would not be allowed as a personal item. Better to always check and not take her word for it.
We’re going to Italy 🇮🇹 next a few weeks and then NYC in December. I have a checklist I use, but I’m definitely going to try your 3x3x3 way of packing clothing! I run hot, so I’ll prob bring a little black jacket (Quince) and a jean jacket. I have a zip up hoodie for sleeping on the plane with my joggers and Nike Air Max shoes.
The price went up. It's now $13.99. It might go on sale during the upcoming holidays. However, if you look at the 1 and 2-star reviews, they'e not very good. Plus, Amazon flagged this bag as a frequently returned item. Might want to look for a sturdier bag.
A personal item bag is all I take. No merino. Don't have any. Couple of dresses, some nice tops, shorts, trousers, pair of sandals, swimwear, underwear. I take very minimal toiletries and make up. With the amount of money you save with no check in luggage you can buy toiletries at your destination. I just take a microfiber towel rolled up for swimming. I also take a handbag (purse) with money, tickets, passport kindle phone, if the rules change and no handbag allowed I'll have to think about what can be left behind. . A
Hi Aly. Can you post the link for the nicer tote bags. I like the 2nd one you linked here and may get it but was curious to see the other video you mentioned. Thx a bunch
It's a carry-on. Carry-ons must fit under the seat or in the overhead bin, which it does. If it fits under the seat, it's also considered a personal item.
I would like to see what you pack if you are going to a snow destination(Xmas markets) for a week. Also I live on Van Isl and its cold getting to the city on a small cold plane. So if you are flying in Jan you have dress warm.
I’m pretty sweaty which is why I over pack so what would you recommend? I was thinking of just hand washing on the sink or trying to find a laundromat… I’m not sure what to do to be honest
Except that I always stay at least a month wherever I go and this time for instance it's at least two months. I did travel over three months with only a carry-on last time but this time I'm taking a lot of art supplies including a stool to sit on when I paint on site, because I'm getting old!
In this example, it might be possible to acquire or borrow a stool at your destination - particularly if you just need a basic model. Same with an easel or other less specialized items.
I clicked on the bag link but the one that comes up looks different than the one in the video. Also, could you please do a video about airplane pillows?
@@alysmalls ok that’s great to know this bag fits in the WestJet sizer, their dimensions online say 16x6x13 and I can’t find a bag with those dimensions. (I’m in Alberta).
What about the other tote bag , do you prefer it more ? I will be going to Asia and will taking internal flights there, will I be ok with this personal item bag?
Hi Aly, your video inspired me to think further outside of the box. What if an under seat bag could unfold into sections and be hung or laid flat to access the multiple sections? Kind of like a soft suit carry bag? Would that not make packing and using/accessing when you are at your destination? That with a pillow tube would allow for a lot of gear while meeting the more limiting new airline rules? Steve (68yrs) Manitoba
I still want to pay the luggage to check in that I’m bringing for my vacation. I don’t ever mix my dirty slippers and shoes to my clean clothes. I change my dirty clothes daily especially the undies.
just to make sure...your husband Chris..is a GIANT...and, asuming you took on his family name after marriage,...his family name is SMALLS...?...if so..this is hilarious...but also LIFE.. Thank you for this practical video...travel light..is definitely my style of travelling, too
One pair of pajamas for a two weeks trip without doing laundry? We had to exit in middle of night from our Boston hotel room. I vowed never to sleep nude in a hotel after seeing 2 stragglers 15 or 20 minutes later joining the rest of the guests.
I think women under 40 and over 60 could pull it off. Those of us in between those ages probably need more. I pack 2-3 t shirts and a pair of shorts or/and leggings for sleeping. Very little room taken with those.
My problem is by the time I've packed my medication (which is similar in size to my liquid bag), liquid bag, tiny make up bag, chargers, power bank, a light sweater, small knitting project, small pouch of knitting notions/tools, tablet, kindle, small umbrella, stainless steel 500ml water bottle, my personal item bag is full. I've left a set of clothes at my parents in Norway so I can fly with only a personal bag & I bought max size allowed on Ryanair & it was full. No room for clothes.
A tablet and kindle are redundant in a way. Try leaving the knitting stuff behind. In terms of liquid I don’t bring any or sometimes only bring one item that’s liquid. For clothing I bring 3-4 shirts for the week, 3 pants (1 shorts) . A rain jacket (that packs down really small) 3 under garments, 3 socks, 1 shoe that I wear on plane and 1 water bottle that clips onto the bag. It has taken me a while to get it how is effective and still learning.
@zerokool-2058 have to knit but I take a tiny project. Can't eliminate all liquids. If my bottle is attached to outside of the bag, it won't fit in the sizer at the gate.
@@AnnikenAllis Don't worry about your water bottle - I literally just carry mine onto the plane in my hands. No one ever cares about that. You don't have to put it in the bag. You can attach it to the outside of the bag for convenience when getting around the airport or thru security (empty it first), but when it's time to size your bag you just unclip it and hold it in your hand or under your arm with your boarding pass. Literally no one will say anything about it.
I love this! I’m going to Canada next week and I’m always trying to pack better. Given how cold it is (and I’m a baby) I don’t think my layers are gonna allow me to travel THIS light, but I’m going to try the 3x3 with a few extra layering bits. Do you have a video with that backpack?
I'm not sure where you're headed in Canada but it's hovering around 65-70 for the next 10 days where I am so it's not that cold lol! Have a great trip! We just did a 10 night stay. We did do carry on only. I am 6’ and 1x my husband is 6’6” and my youngest son joined us. He is 7’ and 200 pounds and wears size 18 shoes. We did carryon and personal item. It is possible. I like to be in control of my luggage.
Great bag and packing method!
I still prefer luggage with wheels.
Yes... me too.. ❤
Wool is antibacterial so typically it does not smell. I almost never wash whool, just air it.
Fabulous video! Again! Can you do a 3x3 for travel to an all inclusive for 10 days?
Sure! Great suggestion
I was wondering if someone would comment this 😆
Merino wool can be used multiple times without stinking.
Do you have a video about flying during the extreme winter when you need warm clothes and a heavy winter coat?
Well Ally, when will merino wool be available in 3x women size?
Love the 3x3 soduko concept!! Will try.
Merino is also very itchy! Also not happy in the wash, I believe hand wash only?
I think merino has come a long way, it's not itchy like it used to be! and i can throw mine in the wash no problem and just hang dry
Great tips. I'll definitely try this on my upcoming trip
Great information! I love it; it’ll help me a lot! I’ve been frequently seeing info on the Merino clothing and I think it’s time to invest in some!
That bag looks much bigger than the size I'm usually allowed in Europe, typically 40 x 20 x 25 cm.
The personal item allowance on Swiss Air SFO to ZRH is 40 x 30 x 10 cm (16 x 12 x 4 in.), so the bag in this video would not be allowed as a personal item. Better to always check and not take her word for it.
She said “don’t stuff it tight. Leave room to compress from all sides to fit the constraints.”
Does the purple bag even fit in the WestJet personal item slot? I find they have one of the smallest allowances
Yes, as long as you don't overstuff it. Here's a quick video showing how it fits in WJ: ua-cam.com/users/shortsPzk-Hs0TfGs?feature=share
@@alysmalls thanks! Cheers from Vancouver BC
Aly: You are Japanese and Taiwanese in your previous life… brilliant video! PS/ Please get new slippers 😅😅. Your husband and you are so cute together.
Great job.
I judt did a 3 day trip and only took a personalnitem, in this case a bagpack and I love the freedom to wear the few items I packed
Hey my mom is too! My sister lives up in the mountains of Italy! She’s trying to pack carryon only and it seems to be proving difficult!
Do you have the link for the $10 bag? The ones I clicked on in the description took me to more expensive bags. Thank you.
I also take a handbag (purse) with money, tickets, passport
kindle phone, if the rules change and no handbag allowed I'll have to think about what can be left behind.

Your tips are great, thank you! Where did you get your plaid shirt? I couldn’t find it in the links but like how many colors you can pull in.
I've had it for years, it's Volcom brand!
@@alysmalls Thank you!
Hi Aly. Can you post the link for the nicer tote bags. I like the 2nd one you linked here and may get it but was curious to see the other video you mentioned. Thx a bunch
Great video! Where do I find the link to your husband packing a backpack for a similar trip as you mentioned in the video?
Great video idea!
How is that different from a carry on?
It fits under the seat in front of you. Much faster and easier when leaving the airplane. 😊
It's a carry-on. Carry-ons must fit under the seat or in the overhead bin, which it does. If it fits under the seat, it's also considered a personal item.
Love the 3x3 concept!!! and that is a great price on that tote bag!!! How durable is it?
What about toiletries?
Thought the same thing
She put in what she said was her toiletries bag. If you click the link in the description you can see the one she used.
Or curling iron or hair dryer? I don't use ones in hotels after I read about all the bacteria.
Good tips Aly! Do you find that the sizes typically run small or are they true to size?
I would say pretty true to size
Thank you for making this video .
Could you inquire with your sponsor of the pesticide exposure to the lanolin?
I would like to see what you pack if you are going to a snow destination(Xmas markets) for a week. Also I live on Van Isl and its cold getting to the city on a small cold plane. So if you are flying in Jan you have dress warm.
Thanks for sharing!
But carrying that on your shoulder through the airports is a killer!
Especially for someone my age… 👩
I am allergic to wool, I usually wear cotton.
lmao " I have worn this for 6 days now and no one has told I stink " ok maybe I should try merino wool from unbound
I couldn’t wear anything for days on end and there’s no dresses - everything is casual ?
I’m pretty sweaty which is why I over pack so what would you recommend? I was thinking of just hand washing on the sink or trying to find a laundromat… I’m not sure what to do to be honest
Bring fast dry clothes and hand wash
Many hotels that I have stayed in have a washing machine and dryer. Pack your own soap.
Hi! Are you going to be able to share what to wear in your coming fall trip to Europe?
Yes! I'm hopefully going to make a 'pack with me' video before I leave...which is about 2 weeks away...I better get on it lol!
How big is that bag, looks larger than would be allowed
I clicked on the bag link but the one that comes up looks different than the one in the video.
Also, could you please do a video about airplane pillows?
it might depend what country you're in. they're all basically the same, as long as its 25L and 18x14x8, it's the same as the bag I have
@@alysmalls ok that’s great to know this bag fits in the WestJet sizer, their dimensions online say 16x6x13 and I can’t find a bag with those dimensions. (I’m in Alberta).
@@pamelaswan7214 I tested this bag and a couple others in the Westjet sizers at the airport! ua-cam.com/users/shortsPzk-Hs0TfGs?feature=share
@@alysmalls thank you, I just bought the Tayler backpack so I’m glad to know it fits WestJet.
Great video thank you
What about the other tote bag , do you prefer it more ? I will be going to Asia and will taking internal flights there, will I be ok with this personal item bag?
The tote bag has a few extra pockets for organization but is slightly smaller in volume. All depends on your needs
ThankYou!
Awesome! Thank you for your videos!
I'm not sure how you can fit personal care items in a carryon, plus shoes and clothes.
Is there merino wool for poor people? For $88 I can buy 10 t-shirts at Walmart and still pay for 1 extra bag

How do you wear one pair of pajamas without washing??
I still want to pay the luggage to check in that I’m bringing for my vacation. I don’t ever mix my dirty slippers and shoes to my clean clothes. I change my dirty clothes daily especially the undies.
None of the bags shown is Ryanair compatible as a personal item.
just to make sure...your husband Chris..is a GIANT...and, asuming you took on his family name after marriage,...his family name is SMALLS...?...if so..this is hilarious...but also LIFE..
Thank you for this practical video...travel light..is definitely my style of travelling, too
I’m flying with an airline that has normal measures for hand luggage but the weight limit is 2 kg. 🙈
Still I will fly with hand luggage only. 🧛♀️
Love my Unbound- live in it! It's amazing, even down here in central Texas one shirt goes a full month before it has any hint of a smell.
Thank you 😊
Merino wool not for hot high humidity tropics
@zerokool-2058 I use tablet for work & kindle to read if it's sunny, like a beach holiday.
Knitting stuff? Umbrella? Water bottle?? Wow, you’re not much of a fly by the seat of your pants person, are you?
I have 2 videos with the backpack: ua-cam.com/video/ocuk3Vxo_YU/v-deo.htmlsi=PhNZEV_ZSu51tzrr and this one that Chris did: ua-cam.com/video/VYjrPQR2DcM/v-deo.htmlsi=2UU-D0qyy_Q4XxM0
@@alysmalls headed to Banff for some photography stuff so it’ll be early mornings and late nights and I’m a phoenix gal so anything under 80 and my teeth are chattering! 🥶 thanks for your help! I was looking through your videos but there are so many! Have a great week 🌺
Thank you for the hubby foto 😂
The bag at your store says 85 bucks Canadian lol. What happened to ten dollars?
I spent 10 days in Italy with just a small roll-aboard thanks to Merino wool.
Great video, but I do have a question-what about the tsa standard clear toiletry zip bag? Did I miss that part?
Yes, I use a quart-size ziploc bag - then that goes inside the main toiletry bag
Great video
Great idea, video and execution, thanks!
It looks like the purple bag is too big for TAP as a carryon item. Their allowable size is 40x30x15cm / 16x12x5in, and max weight of 2 kg / 4.4 lbs. Too bad!
That underseat space is my foot space.
Where are your toiletries?
Loved your video! Your husband looks like a giant beside you! Unfortunately I'm not tiny like you are and Unbound Merino wool does not cater to overweight women. 😥
