You're probably the first knife UA-camr ive ever seen that actually has an understanding of the PVD process. Ive worked in the high end custom firearms field, and currently work in aerospace so im fairly familiar with the different coatings. I constantly see "DLC is the best coating, PVD is second best" being parroted around and it hurts my brain.
Agreed. lost of discussion without practical experience. Best I can figure that DLC (Diamond like coating) is some sort of reactive coating like "blueing". With the Vapor Deposition you actually are causing a form of molecular alignment as a by product of the deposition process resulting in a hardening of the the outer layer of the substrate metal. The DLC might be better for some applications but I bet is is easier to apply correctly than PVD that is incredibly sensitive to contaminates in the process. Early reports of SOG coatings was that they suffered from scaling indicative of this. I worked semiconductor a life time ago and we had all sorts of cool metal layering processes. The OC guys were legendary with their plated engine parts they were doing on the side. thanks for watching
