Mystery Ranch vs. Cotopaxi: 42 L Travel Backpacks HD 1080p
Recently decided to upgrade my travel bag from a REI Big Haul 40. The two packs that stood out were the Cotopaxi Allpa 42 and the New Mystery Ranch Mission Rover 45. Don't let the numbers fool you, they are all about the same size. I take an in-depth comparative look and let offer my option of which might be the better pack for my needs. Cheers

I saw this had recently come out and I'm a long time 940 Osborne fan, so naturally I had to get it. At a mere 2.7 oz with anodized green scales, could this be even better than the Benchmade?

Viktos Counteract CCW Pack (15L)

This is the small EDC pack in Viktos' new Counteract line. They also have a smaller sling bag. The idea with these is that they have a dedicated CCW area that has a rapid presentation function. I like it because it has a completely separate storage than the rest of the pack, making it a great option for public areas where you might not want to present as overly tactical.

    I recently got the Benchmade 162. It's a nice knife but overpriced. As to the Chinese, they are the world's largest shipbuilders and have been making knives for thousands of years so I'm pretty sure they know how to make high quality steel if they want to. It's just that we buy the cheap stuff to make profit.. If you were to spend $300 on a chinese-made knife it would be something very special but you can only get those in China. I have a 25-year-old chinese-made kitchen butcher knife that is still razor sharp and I use it everyday in the kitchen. It has only been maintained on a owning steel I bought the same day. I bought it in a Chinese butcher shop which Imports high quality knives directly from China. But you won't find these on Amazon Etc. I mainly bought the Benchmade for the name and reliability of the product. But it's my first five quality fixed blade. I will have a look at Joker knives one day when I can afford another one.

  • @just9911
    @just9911 14 днів тому

    The 940 is not a proper sheepsfoot, it isnt a sheepsfoot at all. Sheepsfoot blades (like wharncliffe blades) have a straight edge and the spine dives down towards the edge. I think benchmade calls the 940 a reverse tanto. You should give the Altair a look. It’s nice to see SOG trying again the last few years.

    • @mtnboy123
      @mtnboy123 14 днів тому

      Thanks. I love the learning aspect of the comments. Went down the rabbit hole on this question. Yes, the BM website describes the 940 as a "reverse Tanto" but then the definitions I looked at put it into question if the 940 also meets the definition of sheepsfoot. "A blade shape characterized by a straight edge and a spine that curves down to meet it at the point. Sheepsfoot blades are designed for slicing while minimizing the potential for accidental piercing with the point. It was originally used to trim the hooves of sheep but comes in handy as a rescue tool today." I took a tour at the BM factory a few years ago and they have a little museum upstairs and had a set up about the origins of the 940 design. I think that is where I first read about the shape and what the designer was aiming for. Seems like the 940 is more of a hybrid. Take a look at the Sheepsfoot Griptillian, and there is not a whole lot of difference in the geometry between the two. The BM Prosper has a more classic Sheepsfoot profile. Cheers, and thanks for the comment.

    • @mtnboy123
      @mtnboy123 16 днів тому

      I own 7 or 8 SOG knives and I’ve had to return one due to QA issues. It was a Terminus that had issues on the uniformity of the blade grind. On the forums, other people reported issues with the pod coating. I suspect their QA is generally good but better with the Taiwan, USA or Japanese manufacturing. The warranty return took a half hour on the phone and I had to pay for shipping. Actual process took 2 weeks. Certainly not Benchmade level customer service. Also, I can’t agree with the overpriced garbage comment. Generally, I find SOG has high value products although some of their designs (especially with the sheaths) are lacking. I don’t think they do nearly as much product testing as other companies. My 2 cents and thanks for the comment.

      @@mtnboy123 You definitely like SOG so of course you won't agree. That's fine. I'm a dealer so I'm pretty sure I've seen, sold and returned quite a lot SOG-s for past 10 years. Even their LTE versions are mostly crap. Come with stripped screw heads, damaged blades, broken tension springs, bent bearings etc. I've seen them all. The last on "gem" was the carbon ultra xr with damaged s35v blade because it apparently hits the stand off. Their multi tool line is even worse than that.

    If you think that blade play is caused by the backing pin you are wrong. as for this particular knife, it is an overpriced garbage just like 99% of modern gerber knives. impossible to tear down without stripping the screws or damaging the scales (just like 99% of their knives) cheapass 1920s steel with terrible heat treatment that won't hold an edge properly. For $50 you can get a much more better knife. tons of options.

    • @mtnboy123
      @mtnboy123 19 днів тому

      I sense you have a strong opinion on this. I think the strength of the lock up is a combination of the liners, back pin and screws. Experience is just showing that it is a pretty solid after using it as a work blade for 6 weeks. For comparison, after a similar amount of work I sent in my BM north fork to have replacement parts because of the amount of play that developed. Yes, I was pushing it beyond what it was designed to do. The blade did much better than the 440a of the gerber but the BM also cost 5x as much. I looked at a few websites like bladehq and didn’t really see anything in a recognizable name brand at that price point. Boker was the closest. I guess the end analysis is that the gerber worked really well for me as a work knife especially compared to high priced alternatives. I also find that as a brand, Gerber has some really solid and well designed options. I get that you might not like the brand and would like to hear what your personal experience was. That is constructive input for anyone considering this or another gerber knife. Cheers

      @@mtnboy123 checkout Kershaw covalent with D2 for around $45. It's a perfect bugout alternative with great edge retention. It has glass reinforced plastic handles with steel liners. D2 is is not as tough as 440a but not too brittle as well. Acts very similar to s30v . Will hold and edge forever but is quite easy to sharpen. By the way I really like Gerber as a brand and I like their knife designs but the execution is subpar 99% of the time. Similar to SOG. I like their designs but their QC is terrible.

    • @4Sandrix
      @4Sandrix 19 днів тому

      Oh and about the stop pin. With this particular knife the cause of the blade play are the low quality washers and soft steel pivot. Not the stop pin. Poor materials are the cause not the design. I love the design.

Great overview. 👍🏻

      Thanks for watching and the comment. It's been interesting to watch the evolution (or de-evolution) over the years. I remember as a teenager in the 80's, buy some of their tactical, dive and skeleton knives and there wasn't anything else on the market that filled those niches. Now, there are so many producers in those space and Gerber/Fisker is set up more with a mass production model and aiming for low to mid tier market. I think people lament the old Gerber with out appreciating the present Gerber. The Scout is a case in point. I could talk for an hour of all the design elements that Gerber got right in this knife. Kind of like Apple with their "designed in California" (but made in china/vietnam/thailand) approach. I think Gerber's down side is that they have too many "meh" products destined for mass consumers who don't really carry or care that much. The challenge is finding the well designed and executed Gerber products in a sea of mediocre products, but you are rewarded some high quality offerings at an extremely reasonable price. So far my list of favorites are the Downwind, Scout, strong-arm, principle, Bushcraft Axe and their older Multi-Plier tool (when it came out).

    I had a Benchmade 162 in the mail that was supposed to be delivered today but unfortunately the post office messed it up. Actually the Chinese have been making knives for thousands of years and they are the world's largest shipbuilders so obviously they know how to make high quality Steel. It's just that business people go there and buy the cheap stuff to sell to us back home to make profit. I have a 25 year old Chinese Kitchen butcher night that is still razor sharp today and it's only been honed on a steel. @@mtnboy123 Actually some knife makers in China like Kubey knives buy high quality Steel from Germany Etc. Also if you were to spend $300 on a chinese-made knife, that was actually made for the Chinese and not for export you would get a very high quality knife. Way back in the old days the Chinese knife makers would plunge their hot metal swords through the bodies of their enemies while they were tied up of course. They thought that it would give extra spiritual strength to their swords but actually it was adding carbon. To make their swords they would fold the metal over multiple times to give strength and flexibility. As I mentioned before the Chinese have been making knives for thousands of years and all we see is the cheap stuff because they keep the high quality stuff for themselves. If it says made in China written in English that's the junk they sell us but if it says made in China written in Chinese like it does on my kitchen knife that's the high quality stuff. As I mentioned I have a 25-year-old chinese-made knife that is still a razor sharp today and I use it everyday. I did end up returning the saw and replaced it with a cordless Makita. After using the Makita for about 2 years, the kobalt seemed more reliable. The Makita likes to throw its chain a lot.

    I was fortunate enough to get my Benchmade 162 back before the price skyrocketed and it is still one of my favorite and most trusted field knives. It isn’t for everyone’s taste, but it does everything I need it to do with no difficulty.

      Same here. I picked up an extra one at the REI closeout on the knife. I think I paid like $120. Figure it is a good investment. Cheers and thanks for watching.

    Great review/overview. Love comparisons. 👍🏻 My personal opinion (and opinions are like belly buttons - we all have one) is that Gerber lost the plot somewhere along the line, and now basically makes knives for non-knife people. I could see a non-knife person buying that Gerber and sticking it on a backpack and forgetting about it. And maybe that's the best use for it? And that's ok, but I never fell for the strongarm craze, personally. Made in the US is a big seller, tho, for sure. I agree that the Mora (almost any Mora) would be a much better deal. Thanks for the look-see. 👍🏻

      I agree with some of that. Most of their energy seems focused on the "Gerber gear" marketing approach where they are selling at Dicks, REI and other big box stores along with sporks and camp dish kits.. They do still have some solid military offerings but almost no tactical at all. Even their hunting offerings seem to be waining. For awhile, they were pretty committed to the bushcraft scene but their offerings were expensive and kind of uninspired.

      Thanks for the comment. You had an interesting point about the comparison of the Esee 4 and the lynx. The have very different design and manufacturing philosophies. Where the lyric is essentially hand made, the esee is more of a compilation of parts brought together and assembled. I have an esee 5 and am not as impressed with it as many other out there. The steel has a tendency to rust and needs a coat of oil. This prevent use as a food prep knife. The coating is a thick polymer and will definitely wear in time. I’d definitely go lynx over esee 4.

      They have 2 versions of the chest pack. The one I reviewed and another smaller/simpler one I did not look at. If you’re not looking for a CCW, their pouch can be adapted for a small clip on pouch. See 5.11 Skyweight "On-the-Go" Pouch: First Look! ua-cam.com/video/9kN37zKdbpg/v-deo.html
