  • How To Take Metformin Without Side Effects | When Is The Best Time To Take Metformin | How To Build Up Metformin | Metformin 500mg Side Effects Constipation Diarrhea
Hey guys! This weeks video is about metformin and the importance of slowly building up your dose to the prescribed dose to help reduce it's side effects when you're first started on it.
Metformin is a medicine used to treat type 2 diabetes and sometimes polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Type 2 diabetes is an illness where the body doesn't make enough insulin, or the insulin that it makes doesn't work properly. This can cause high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia). PCOS is a condition that affects how the ovaries work.

    KEY FACTS:
    • Metformin works by reducing the amount of sugar your liver releases into your blood. It also makes your body respond better to insulin. Insulin is the hormone that controls the level of sugar in your blood.
    • It's best to take metformin with a meal to reduce the side effects.
    • The most common side effects are feeling sick, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach ache and going off your food.
    • Metformin does not cause weight gain (unlike some other diabetes medicines).
    • Metformin may also be called by the brand names Bolamyn, Diagemet, Glucient, Glucophage, and Metabet.
    HOW AND WHEN TO TAKE:
It's best to take metformin tablets with a meal to reduce the side effects. Swallow your metformin tablets whole with a glass of water. Do not chew them.
Metformin tablets come in different strengths. Your doctor will tell you how many tablets to take a day.
    DIFFERENT TYPES OF METFORMIN:
Metformin comes as 2 different types of tablet - standard-release tablets and slow-release tablets.
Standard-release tablets release metformin into your body quickly. You may need to take them several times a day depending on your dose.
Slow-release tablets dissolve slowly so you don't have to take them as often.
Your doctor or pharmacist will explain what type of metformin tablets you are on and how to take them.
Metformin is also available as a liquid for children and people who find it difficult to swallow tablets. Liquid metformin is called by the brand name Riomet.
WILL MY DOSE GO UP OR DOWN:
Your doctor will check your blood sugar levels regularly and may change your dose of metformin if necessary.
When you first start taking metformin standard-release tablets you will be advised to increase the dose slowly. This reduces the chances of getting side effects.
(See video for explanation on how to build up dose slowly)
If you find you can't tolerate the side effects of standard-release metformin, your doctor may suggest switching to slow-release tablets.
HOW TO COPE WITH SIDE EFFECTS:
    • Feeling sick - take metformin with food to reduce the chances of feeling sick - it may also help to slowly increase your dose over several weeks.
    • Diarrhoea or vomiting - have small but frequent sips of water. It may also help to take oral rehydration solutions which you can buy from a pharmacy or supermarket to prevent dehydration. Don't take any other medicines to treat diarrhoea or vomiting without speaking to a pharmacist or doctor.
    • Metallic taste in the mouth - if you find that metformin is giving you a metallic taste in the mouth, try chewing sugar-free gum.
If you find you are suffering from side effects talk to your doctor about switching to a slow-release tablet.

I had a mini-stroke age 68 and was diagnosed with diabetes. I was prescribed 1,000 mg Metformin. The Doctor gave me 10 seconds to be aware of gastric side effects. The side effects were horrible. I restarted at a very low dose and took several months yes several months to titrate or get used to it. That worked so take your time as you will have diabetes for a long time.! Went to a low carb diet and lost 40 pounds 195 lb to 155 lb. That did the trick and am now pre-diabetic. The metformin works and oddly I rarely get sick now. Good luck.

Since your post is 2 years old, I assume you know now that you will not have diabetes for a long time. It is completely reversible through diet alone.

My side effects were so severe, I was up in the middle of the night feeling like death in my bathroom. My doctor put me in 1000 mg a day IMMEDIATELY after diagnosing me. My results have been terrible because I completely stopped taking the medication, I’m going to start taking only 500 mg a day now. Spilt the tab in two and take one with breakfast and the other with dinner! Thank so much for this video!!!

My diabetes specialist just increased my dose so hoping going from 1 to 2 that the side effects I am experiencing will diminish in a couple weeks because the second dose is really helping with my sugar levels. I have worken myself and spouse up from the explosive gas since going to two pills. Note that my diabetes specialist said nothing works as good on Type II diabetes as making diet and exercise changes, and losing weight, all of which I am working on and seeing some success; but Metformin is really helping with sugar levels until I get there naturally, wild side effects notwithstanding.

Did medicinal keto for two years. This last year I’ve gone back to eating a small amount of carbs. Maybe 50 to 75 grams a day. Check my blood sugar, blood pressure every day and my Keytone levels every two or three days. Everything is perfectly normal. I’m 68 and come from a family that has diabetes on both sides. Once I became insulin sensitive again it was like starting again in my 20s. Will never go back to eating as much carbs as I did in my youth. Lost 35 pounds, I’m at the weight I was in my 20s, i lost 6 inches off my waist, blood pressure in the morning is 108/64 almost like clockwork. And another major benefit was acid reflux I’ve been suffering with for two decades disappeared in the second week of doing keto. Haven’t even had heartburn in three years. No drugs necessary. Change your diet.

Nice video but metformin makes me feel like I've got the flu. I feel lethargic and dizzy and I just want to go to bed. My heart races and my brain is scattered. I told the GP and he changed it to prolonged released but no difference. Then he gave me slow release insulin injections which gave me hypos and then empagliflozin which also gave me hypos. So now I'm trying diet and exercise but it's a struggle and my sugar levels are in the 20's.

Fist off I would like to apologize for the long winded post and thank
you for making these videos, they have been very helpful, since I got
diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic in November 2016.
    Being 53 years of
age at the time, I had all of the classic systems, dry mouth,
uncontrollable thrust, urinating constantly, finally after 3 months
having a really bad dream that was something terribly wrong that I
needed something removed from by bum. I checked myself to the
hospital and low and behold a sausage growth had manifested itself
and it had to be removed. By the time I checked into the hospital my
sugar levels were over 600+ and I instantly became the next
attraction once the surgery was done and after being there for over 3
weeks...to this date I don’t really know what it really was.
    Once I got released
I got the tools to help me manage my diabetes, the insulin and the
monitor. Things were great for the first since I was watching my
diet and what I ate. After a two year period I have declined and my
last doctors visit was not all that great. My AC1 is 7.4 as of
1/23/02, I got prescribed Metformin (500mg) twice a day, then on top
of that I got prescribed Atorvastain (20mg), I took your advice and
stared doing it only on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and doing a
Pro-biotic in the morning with peanut butter to cut down on the time
    I spend in the crapper.
    Due to my insurance
coverage I go to go on a program called Onduo, so far it gave me a
BioTel Monitor with unlimited test strip and lancets. It has been a
month or two later and I have switched heath insurance and now I
qualify for a 14 day CGM FreeStyle Libre Sensor, the only thing that
I have concerns is that I’m a smoker (trying to quit, even got a
box of free box of Chantix (I need to commit) and on top of that I do
drink more then two-four sometimes six beers a day after work to help
me relax and help me sleep. I have tried sleeping pill but they do
not work, all I do is toss and turn all night long and wake up in a
cold sweat after two maybe three hours of sleep.
What are your thoughts or have any insights on how to go about this?
    Your new fan, Rafael
    (Seattle)

This is a very good drug "Metformin" to take if you eat a low carb diet and no white flour , no grains , no potaoes , no starch , no beans ,no fruit , and eat a healthy moderate protein diet , you can lose a lot of weight .if you keep your blood sugar below 90 and you do fasting , you will never get heart disease or cancer .
----"What foods should I avoid if I have cancer?"
This is the single most frequently asked question from people with cancer. The answer, of course, is complicated, but controlling your cancer through "diet "comes down to two principles: controlling your body's oxidation levels to prevent cancer and limiting your "sugar intake" to prevent metastasizing of cancers.
There are three causes of diabetes that trigger cancer growth when your blood sugar is uncontrolled:
    1. Fruit juices, sweet drinks, and refined carbs.
A soft drink contains 10% sugar. So in a 1-liter bottle, you have just consumed 100 grams of sugar. If you do this three times a day and do that for 4 days, you have actually consumed about 1.2 kilograms of sugar. That is more than 2 pounds of sugar. It is beyond what the body can metabolize. We are practically growing cancer farms ! .
    2. Avoid all Oily foods, especially " polyunsaturated " fatty acids.
Avoid polyunsaturated foods, and fats Foods and oils with higher amounts of polyunsaturated fats include :
    Walnuts.
    Sunflower seeds.
    Flax seeds or flax oil.
Fish, such as salmon, mackerel, herring, albacore tuna, and trout.
    Corn oil.
    Soybean oil.
    Safflower oil.
    Canola Oil
    Peanut Oil
Perhaps the only known oils that do not damage the" liver " are coconut oil and lard. They are both saturated fats and in chemistry are not subjected to free radical attacks. Put a vegetable oil in the sun, side to side with coconut oil, and in one month the coconut oil remains the same but the vegetable oil will turn to glue. Imagine what happens if this occurs in the body as fats and oil tend to accumulate and stay in your body for a long time. Once the liver is damaged, it can't handle the body's sugars as well.
    3. Avoid Foods That Are High in Lectins such as Red Kidney Beans, Soybeans , Peanuts, Potatoes, The highest concentrations of lectins are found in foods like legumes, grains and nightshade vegetables
    Avoid all Wheat products;
Wheat contains a protein that destroys your pancreas, and studies show that this alone can initiate type 1 diabetes. Now in a cancer patient, if the pancreas doesn't work the blood sugar gets high, but as the pancreas gets destroyed, it can't produce pancreatic enzymes. Without enough enzymes in your system, the body cannot digest the food and we end up having cancer cachexia.
    "" What Not to Eat "" ;
As for a short list of what not to eat, here is an excerpt from one of my private emails:
NO WHEAT PRODUCTS , NO CORN PRODUCTS .
NO fruit or fruit juices , NO Milk .
NO COFFEE , NO sweet drinks or sodas
    NO sugar or artificial sugars.
NO corn syrup or fructose. No Dairy
NO carbonated water. Plain UN -chlorinated water is always .
NO vegetable oils ...except coconut oil used in cooking.
    NO fried foods.
    NO calcium.
NO large meals consisting largely of meats.
On the positive side, do drink plenty of water Do not eat before sleep and no large meals at dinner. Dinnertime is best before 5 p.m. No meals after this. Obviously, no snacks and bakery products.
Supplements that reduce blood sugar are helpful, as in glucophage (metformin) twice a day, B3 250 mg three times a day, and vitamin B-1 , 100 mg three times a day . Organic White tea is also important in flushing out excess sugar, while lysine, threonine, , Vitamin C, proline, tannic acid and perhaps organic green tea can help .
It is MOST important, though, to get blood sugar below or equal to 90 mg/dL. You have a 97% better survival rate from cancer if you do.
--- Controlling Your Blood Sugar When You Have Cancer ---
My method for checking blood sugar is to do so 1 HOUR AFTER eating food. Most medical practitioners today measure blood sugar based on 12-hour fasting blood sugar, which is the wrong way to measure with cancer. The reason why they are wrong is cancer becomes metastatic after a blood sugar spike ONE HOUR AFTER A MEAL. The cancer becomes metastatic in the second hour.
Obviously you have to find a cure for diabetes to cure cancer, but in more reasonable terms, if you can CONTROL BLOOD SUGAR not to exceed 110 the cancer simply can't go into metastasis.
I have found three substances that get blood sugar down, namely:
    N acetyl Cystiene
Beta carotene (mostly found in carrots)
    Bitter cucumber.
The Nacetyl cysteine has a long-term effect (which takes about a week) to get blood sugar down, but the quickest is freshly squeezed carrot juice alone or with bitter cucumber. That gets blood sugar down fairly quickly, always less than 110.
Research circles surmise that diabetes is due to a deficiency in beta-carotene and cryptoxanthin (the yellow pigments in carrot, pumpkins and orange rinds). Beta-carotene is a provitamin of Vitamin A. From my own observation I have found provitamins, or percursors of vitamins, to be far more effective than the vitamins themselves in a few cases, such as panthenol, which is a vitamin B5 of pantothenic acid or beta-carotene for example.
These get blood sugar down very quickly and also have a stabilizing effect on blood pressure (in some cases there is no need to take blood pressure medicine if carrot juice is consumed).
Most people with cancer are diabetic. However, most do not know they have diabetes or are border line , even if they did measure their blood sugar. Now, cancerous tumors require "sugar" and "glucose" for them to persist, but they REQUIRE FRUCTOSE TO METASTASIZE.
The best way to stop the metastasis has got to be lysine , BUT WITHOUT THE CALCIUM or any dairy products .
But the trigger for metastasis cancer is fructose and sugar levels. The facts on this issue of cancer survival are based on a Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) report, that people who have more than 90 mg/dL of blood sugar have a 97% increased chance of dying. And those with blood sugar below or equal to 90 mg/dL have a 97% greater chance of survival. It's a key fact that people keep overlooking.
A cancer can reach general metastasis within 2 hours after consuming most fructose, especially in fruit juices of all kinds. Cancer here in Thailand exploded in the past 5 years here, right after national sales of fruit juices skyrocketed. So it's no coincidence that fruit juices, even without added sugar (called sucrose), do contain large amounts of sugars, such as the fructose found in fruits to begin with.
People tell me how healthy fruits are, and of course they are healthy, for healthy people. What we fail to realize is that research studies assume people with normal blood sugar find them beneficial, and also that in laboratory rats, we prepare fruit extracts, WITHOUT the sugar fructose.
Fructose is more dangerous then sucrose, but sucrose is a double sugar that has fructose and glucose built in. The body's insulin merely controls your blood glucose, but has no control of fructose directly allowing fructose, as a Trojan horse to damage the system .
Regardless of the type of sugar consumed, too much sugar can cause problems. It leads to fermentation in the body that feeds and promotes yeast growth and negative bacteria. Overeating sugary foods causes constipation and gas, and this gas can back up into the bloodstream. This is where most diseases originate-from candida to cancer and everything in between. If you want to be healthy, you must learn to cut back on sugary , refine-carbs and starchy foods.

    Cancer----
In 2013 Tim was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Synovial Sarcoma. www.toughliketim.com/story.html
Identifying stressful areas in your life is the first step toward reclaiming your health. Lack of enjoyment of life, money issues, worry, and fear build stress. But the most common stress on the body is eating and abusing harmful foods.
Abusing foods is the most common stress to the body. People consume foods that were never meant to be in our body, they eat foods in amounts that the body can’t manage, and they eat at times they shouldn’t be eating.
Before viewing my diet suggestions, please understand that health begins with what you eliminate from your diet, not with what you add. The first step in recovery and healing is to remove the problem foods from your diet. Then you can replace them with the healthy food you should have been eating from the beginning.
    ++-- The Causes
At a fundamental level, obesity occurs when people regularly eat and drink more calories than they use. Besides a person's eating behavior, a number of factors can contribute to obesity, including a lack of physical activity, a lack of sleep, (sleep apnea) genetics and the use of certain medications that can cause weight gain or water retention, such as corticosteroids, antidepressants or some seizure medications.
Modern culture and conveniences also, in part, contribute to obesity. According to the Mayo Clinic, environmental factors that promote obesity include: Oversized food portions, busy work schedules with little time for an active lifestyle, limited access to healthy foods at supermarkets, easy access to fast food and lack of safe places for physical activity.

I just started today and I took it with my breakfast. For week 1 I only take 1 pill daily and then it builds up after that. I’m prediabetic and I’ve been having a hard time trying to lose weight. I’m hoping to get my health back on track with my low carb diet and walking!

Make sure to have your cortisol levels checked, endogenous cushing's syndrome is quite frequent

When should one take metformin before meal or after meal and timing thereof

I guess it does help you lose weight when it has side effects that acts like a laxative. I had very painful cramping and then diarrhea after meals with taking Metformin. I'm off of it now.

How to stop taking it ? What could be the side effects if we stop ?? Are we prone to diabetes if we discontinue metformin??

On my last lab my a1c was normal 5.6. And my doctor reduced my Metformin from 2000mg a day to 1000mg. I found that it was causing burning in my chest and problems with my fingers. I'm thinking 1000mg is to much now because my Gl: is 101 and A1c is normal. This was because I lost 20lb and I'm thinking this stuff is making things worse.
