BLOOD GLUCOSE TESTING:
Blood glucose testing, also known as blood glucose monitoring, is one of the main tools involved in controlling diabetes.
Not everyone with diabetes will test their blood glucose levels but it is regarded as being very beneficial for helping to make diet and medication dosing decisions.
If you are on any medication that can lead to hypoglycaemia (most notably insulin), you should test your blood glucose levels.
WHAT IS A LANCING DEVICE:
Lancing devices are used to obtain samples of blood for glucose testing using a lancet.
A variety of lancets are on the market, the most common of which are automatic lancing devices (Used in the video).
TESTING BLOOD GLUCOSE METER & TESTS STRIPS:
Control solutions are used to check that the meter and test strips are working together properly and that the test is performing correctly. Most control solutions last 90 days after opening, please check yours for the actual date. The acceptable range of glucose for that solution is listed on the back of your test strip vial or control solution.
USEFUL TIPS:
Please watch the full video for all of them but here are some important ones,
• Use a new lancet every time you use your lancing device. I know it's time consuming but if you don't change, it's going to hurt more and you're at risk of a skin infection.
• Diabetic patients tend to build a collection of different blood glucose meters over time. It’s really important that you only ever use one meter to build up a trend of results because different meters will give slightly different results.
HOW TO TEST BLOOD GLUCOSE:
• Prepare your kit for testing.
• This should include: your meter, test strip, lancing device, cotton wool, monitoring diary and sharps bin.
• Ensure that the lancing device is primed with a new lancet.
• Wash and dry your hands - to ensure that the result is not influenced by any sugars that may be present on your fingers.
• A fuller drop of blood will be obtained if your fingers are warm, so it’s worth warming your hands by washing with warm water and rubbing them for 10 seconds.
• Put a test strip into your meter, make sure it switches on and is ready.
• Prick your finger with the lancing device at the sides of the finger as there are less nerve ending here than at the tips or the ‘pads’. Switch fingers regularly to prevent thickening of the skin. You may want to avoid using your little finger due to the skin being thin.
• If your hands are warmed up you shouldn't need to squeeze your finger for a blood drop, if necessary apply light pressure to the surrounding area until a blood drop appears. Squeezing too hard can interfere with results.
• Wipe away the first blood drop with clean cotton wool and use the second blood drop for testing (careful not to smear the drop).
• Gently touch the blood drop with the test strip in the meter, wait a few seconds for result to appear.
• If the test is successful, clean any blood off your finger - with the cotton wool if necessary.
• Record the result/details in a monitoring diary.
• Dispose of the test strip and ensure that the lancet used is put into a sharps bin.

I’m 16 weeks pregnant and just found out I have gestational diabetes. I’m prescribed to use one of these and this was a helpful video better than reading the instructions manual and was still confused how to use it lol thanks a lot of the help!
Recently diagnosed with Diabetes and coming to terms with it... Watching your video really helped me understand how to use my meter and gave me more confidence. Thank you!

Lots of tips I didn't know eg wiping off first drop of blood and using second, not to squeeze finger as it may affect results....thanks for your care :)
Thanks for commenting, glad I could help :)
If every pharmacist was like this guy I'd use the pharmacist a lot more. Very very professional.
Thanks for the video man! I was diagnosed Type 2 and given the devices, but no one taught me what to do. Ive kinda been scratching my head for the last week. I knew youtube would be fruitful. Thanks again!

Very helpful I was totally scared to apply the needle after seeing the video I wasn't scared any more. Thanks!
You’re welcome 😊
Your approach to health care for those people who really need this is so valuable. Not only are you showing how to do the test but with added information to benefit the patient. You are helping relieve stress from people by guiding in an efficient way. I commend you most highly, the very best videos are from you. Is it only diet to prevent type two diabetes please.? Not a problem if you are to busy. Thank you for video and blessings and greetings and hugs.xoxo
Thanks for commenting Patricia, you always write the nicest comments. Thanks for all the support :)
Thank you sooooo much. I just got a blood glucose meter and the directions were super tiny and not really descriptive. You saved me :)
Glad it was helpful :)
I’m an RN in California. I take blood sugars and teach this a lot. Your video is really well done. Just a couple of points. One, many lancets don’t work exactly like the one you have ( I know because I’ve broken a couple trying to figure them out LOL). Two, I was taught to use the second drop of blood but many of my patients do not bother and I have to admit I don’t usually see a difference in the readings. Is there a scientific basis for using the second drop? I’d guess the first drop has more plasma but I’d like to be able to tell my patients more accurately why to use the second drop. Cheers.
OK this is too funny, I’m replying to my own comment, but I just checked out this great NIH article and here’s a good quote “Our study also shows that the first drop of blood should not be used when the patient has not washed the hands.” According to the NIH article if the hands have been washed with soap and water and dried properly it is fine to use the first drop of blood..
@@anabicakci1507 Thanks for you useful info 👍
Great video once again Abraham. You bled for the purpose of our education. What a legend! A BG reading of 5.0, spot on 😉
Thanks for commenting :) Glad I could help. Was a good reading too 👌

My son is studying to become a pharmacist, your reading is at 50 , mine is usually about 128 , is that a European reading , that's a little too low ? Thank you for a good video keep up the the good work

Thanks for this video, I use the Freestyle Libre sensor with Ambrosia NightRider to check the glucose levels on the phone and sometimes I use watch to monitor the levels.
one of my friend suggested me for Ambrosia device, now I am using it for last 6 months which always track me the glucose, insulin, exercise on one platform and I am able to extend the life of my sensor with the help of Blucon for another 14 days.
Thank you soooo much for going so far your fans, you even took a blood sample just for us. I am following your steps sir. I want to become a pharmacist just like yourself. I rely on your information and research. Thank you!
Thanks for commenting :) Glad I could help, that's very kind of you. I'm sure you will be a great pharmacist.
Very informative video. I think it’s important to mention though to get testing supplies specific to the make and model of the glucose meter, as each meter is different and will not work with all test strips. Same thing with the lancing device
Thank you so much!!! I'm gonna be getting my blood clucose meter soon I'm dreading it!!! I'm a big baby when it comes to needles!! I pray it doesn't hurt!! Love the video thanks again 👍😁
Glad I could help
Clear and easy to understand:) my carnivore meat based eating has me wanting to test my sugar so I was of getting one
Thank god for these UA-cam videos. I would have never found the set button, placed inside the area where the battery goes!. Duh, it wasn't even shown in the manual where the button was at. Good example. Now, I just need to see a video showing you to set the date and time. Might do it myself.
Thanks for this video, what a big help for me! I have a glucometer but I didn't know how to use it, until I found this tutorial. Thanks for sharing, God bless you more! 🌞😇

Nice video, I use Libre and Blucon and love them. The alarms are nice and are loud enough to wake me up. You can adjust your BG ranges to whatever you want. The best part of blucon is I can calibrate it for higher accuracy!
Love your advice and blooper videos! So many helpful tips in each episode. I look forward to each one :)

Amazing video. Really good information all round but especially liked that you reminded people about the importance of the control solution which often gets left in the box untouched!

Thank you, my dad’s sisters has diabetes and I am planning to buy her some glucose needles, she can’t find those back home ( Albania)
She has to buy a glucometer machine in order to have needles and she can’t do that always, so hopefully I will be able to buy them here in Canada ,
May I please have a link or something where can I get them . I am in quarantine now as I just came back from home but as soon as I am out I will be checking and getting info for that , meanwhile I would appreciate a little more help from you sir
By the way your video is amazing and not boring , you were born to be an amazing pharmacist and an entertainer ☺️

Happy to help
This is sooooooo good!!!! Can't believe you pricked yourself for us
Thanks for commenting :) Glad I could help.
Your instructions on how to do were superb. But then at the end how to UNdo the needle seemed vague to me. What is that big yellow thing and where do I get it? Do you keep it till it's full of old needles or dump it out daily? And to get the needle out of the machine what exactly did you press it into? You said to press it onto a hard surface but that whole section was not clear to me. Anyhow I'm sure that over time it will get clear and thank you for being such a good teacher.
Abraham, love the video, I am a pharmacy student and would like to learn about you and your career choices can you do a Q and A video? Please reply because some other students and I have quite a few questions to ask.
Thanks for commenting, hope your studies are going well. Of course I can, what questions did you and the other pharmacy students have? Feel free to email me them if it's easier for you - thepharmacistabraham@gmail.com
OMG! Abraham you should defo do this! Here's my question, when it comes to computers: Mac or windows?
Will add to the list of questions thanks :)
What is the best and worst thing about Pharmacy ?
Will add to the list of questions thanks :)
Thank you for this.. I swear I learned more from this 5 minute video than I have in 3 years from my doctor. I was diagnosed with prediabities when I was 19 and still to this day don’t know how to manage it. I have no health insurance and I’ve developed a mild eating disorder because I’m scared of what’s going to make me feel awful. And now I’m going through ketosis. I’m finally going to get a monitor considering my doctor never told me to. Thank you for this ❤️

First time user here. Explain the reading itself on the monitor, like how you tested 5.0 what does that read?
Thanks Abraham. I cant allways get the blood into the test strip. I was a nurse up to 12 years ago. Seem to have lost my technique of getting the strip to take up a tiny bit of blood.

Can someone tell me where I can find up to date information on the latest guidelines and numbers for glucose for non-diabetics as well as diabetics. I am finding conflicting information. What organization(s) or council(s) set the standards. If you have a link, I would appreciate it. The numbers I am finding are all over the place and accuracy is needed. Thanks so much.
I just wish I could find a video that concentrates on a simple (no mobile phone based) blood glucose monitor that does 90 days averaging for me. You would think this would be a main feature on all of them, as this is what we get tested every three months for our A1C testing. I want it to help me know when I'm going off track over a longer period of time, ie during my 3 month testing periods
Yep great easy to follow video thanx
Glad to hear and to help

Iv'e tried both Accucheck performa and Abbots Freestyle lite. Both are giving me inconsistent results. I test once and I get 112 mg/dl. I test another finger using same device but new lancet, 20sec latter and I get 91... How is this possible? I thought the Accucheck was faulty, but the same happens with the Freestyle... Both control solutions are testing OK as expected...
Very helpful. Thanks Abraham.
Glad my tips helped!

I measured my blood sugar about 45 minutes after eating a heavy dinner using my mom's glucose meter (I am not diabetic, or this is what i think!). On the first reading i got 1.27 g/l. Right after that i tested again and i got 1.37. I immediately tested again and got 1.47, i checked again and got 2.0 g/l, i checked right again and got 1.65. On the sixth test i got 2.17!! there was barley 5 seconds between each.
Does any body have an explanation for that?!!!
Becareful with this kind of toy machine, there are so many fake toy machine in the market these days.
