    BLOOD GLUCOSE TESTING:
Blood glucose testing, also known as blood glucose monitoring, is one of the main tools involved in controlling diabetes.
Not everyone with diabetes will test their blood glucose levels but it is regarded as being very beneficial for helping to make diet and medication dosing decisions.
If you are on any medication that can lead to hypoglycaemia (most notably insulin), you should test your blood glucose levels.
    WHAT IS A LANCING DEVICE:
Lancing devices are used to obtain samples of blood for glucose testing using a lancet.
A variety of lancets are on the market, the most common of which are automatic lancing devices (Used in the video).
TESTING BLOOD GLUCOSE METER & TESTS STRIPS:
Control solutions are used to check that the meter and test strips are working together properly and that the test is performing correctly. Most control solutions last 90 days after opening, please check yours for the actual date. The acceptable range of glucose for that solution is listed on the back of your test strip vial or control solution.
    USEFUL TIPS:
Please watch the full video for all of them but here are some important ones,
    • Use a new lancet every time you use your lancing device. I know it's time consuming but if you don't change, it's going to hurt more and you're at risk of a skin infection.
    • Diabetic patients tend to build a collection of different blood glucose meters over time. It’s really important that you only ever use one meter to build up a trend of results because different meters will give slightly different results.
    HOW TO TEST BLOOD GLUCOSE:
    • Prepare your kit for testing.
    • This should include: your meter, test strip, lancing device, cotton wool, monitoring diary and sharps bin.
    • Ensure that the lancing device is primed with a new lancet.
    • Wash and dry your hands - to ensure that the result is not influenced by any sugars that may be present on your fingers.
    • A fuller drop of blood will be obtained if your fingers are warm, so it’s worth warming your hands by washing with warm water and rubbing them for 10 seconds.
    • Put a test strip into your meter, make sure it switches on and is ready.
    • Prick your finger with the lancing device at the sides of the finger as there are less nerve ending here than at the tips or the ‘pads’. Switch fingers regularly to prevent thickening of the skin. You may want to avoid using your little finger due to the skin being thin.
    • If your hands are warmed up you shouldn't need to squeeze your finger for a blood drop, if necessary apply light pressure to the surrounding area until a blood drop appears. Squeezing too hard can interfere with results.
    • Wipe away the first blood drop with clean cotton wool and use the second blood drop for testing (careful not to smear the drop).
    • Gently touch the blood drop with the test strip in the meter, wait a few seconds for result to appear.
    • If the test is successful, clean any blood off your finger - with the cotton wool if necessary.
    • Record the result/details in a monitoring diary.
    • Dispose of the test strip and ensure that the lancet used is put into a sharps bin.

Man, I think I'm your biggest fan. You really do care about others and not just self promoting like many other youtubers. Also - you really motivated me with some of your videos. I'm doing my masters and I'm really stressed out by so many issues that's come up (personal as well) - and you just have a way to calm people down. You are a great doctor! I’m an RN in California. I take blood sugars and teach this a lot. Your video is really well done. Just a couple of points. One, many lancets don’t work exactly like the one you have ( I know because I’ve broken a couple trying to figure them out LOL). Two, I was taught to use the second drop of blood but many of my patients do not bother and I have to admit I don’t usually see a difference in the readings. Is there a scientific basis for using the second drop? I’d guess the first drop has more plasma but I’d like to be able to tell my patients more accurately why to use the second drop. Cheers.

OK this is too funny, I’m replying to my own comment, but I just checked out this great NIH article and here’s a good quote “Our study also shows that the first drop of blood should not be used when the patient has not washed the hands.” According to the NIH article if the hands have been washed with soap and water and dried properly it is fine to use the first drop of blood..

Your instructions on how to do were superb. But then at the end how to UNdo the needle seemed vague to me. What is that big yellow thing and where do I get it? Do you keep it till it's full of old needles or dump it out daily? And to get the needle out of the machine what exactly did you press it into? You said to press it onto a hard surface but that whole section was not clear to me. Anyhow I'm sure that over time it will get clear and thank you for being such a good teacher.

Thank you for this.. I swear I learned more from this 5 minute video than I have in 3 years from my doctor. I was diagnosed with prediabities when I was 19 and still to this day don’t know how to manage it. I have no health insurance and I’ve developed a mild eating disorder because I’m scared of what’s going to make me feel awful. And now I’m going through ketosis. I’m finally going to get a monitor considering my doctor never told me to. Thank you for this ❤️

Thanks Abraham. I cant allways get the blood into the test strip. I was a nurse up to 12 years ago. Seem to have lost my technique of getting the strip to take up a tiny bit of blood.

Can someone tell me where I can find up to date information on the latest guidelines and numbers for glucose for non-diabetics as well as diabetics. I am finding conflicting information. What organization(s) or council(s) set the standards. If you have a link, I would appreciate it. The numbers I am finding are all over the place and accuracy is needed. Thanks so much.

I just wish I could find a video that concentrates on a simple (no mobile phone based) blood glucose monitor that does 90 days averaging for me. You would think this would be a main feature on all of them, as this is what we get tested every three months for our A1C testing. I want it to help me know when I'm going off track over a longer period of time, ie during my 3 month testing periods

Iv'e tried both Accucheck performa and Abbots Freestyle lite. Both are giving me inconsistent results. I test once and I get 112 mg/dl. I test another finger using same device but new lancet, 20sec latter and I get 91... How is this possible? I thought the Accucheck was faulty, but the same happens with the Freestyle... Both control solutions are testing OK as expected...

I measured my blood sugar about 45 minutes after eating a heavy dinner using my mom's glucose meter (I am not diabetic, or this is what i think!). On the first reading i got 1.27 g/l. Right after that i tested again and i got 1.37. I immediately tested again and got 1.47, i checked again and got 2.0 g/l, i checked right again and got 1.65. On the sixth test i got 2.17!! there was barley 5 seconds between each.
Does any body have an explanation for that?!!!
