Worked on the Honda sales floor for two months in 2021 as a third-year Uni student (19). Sold nearly 40 cars, and my commission was roughly $17,000. I ended up doing many flats/low gross profit deals, but I would make up for it by reaching sales bonuses via monthly quotas; this would add an additional $1200-1800 each pay stub. I was also paid front end + a minimal margin on the backend. I highly recommend car sales, or sales in general if you desire to work directly with customers in a genuinely rewarding way.

Listening to this makes me love my dealership that much more. We get paid on of the front and back end. $5k a month is our draw. Nobody at my dealership hardly just makes draw. Lexus for the win!!!! During the pandemic I made $90k and I only worked 9 months.
That’s amazing to hear, I made 90k in 10 months at Honda my first year, throughout pandemic by the way, in the US the average salesman makes at least 10k a month to 15k , top payers 20k to 30k
The hybrid position is the best thing. Understanding and doing the entire process is crucial to helping the customer and your own self-development. You can never go wrong with knowing all the ins and outs of the business. 💙
I get paid off the front end profit as well as the back end profit at my dealership. For example, I had a deal today where I sold this car that had 4K in profit off it on the front and with kick back from the financing bank and what the finance manager sales in warranty on the back it was additional $3,500. Total deal was $7,500. I got 24% commission off of that total deal. Not all dealerships will only pay you on the front end, this is all subject to change based off of what dealership you work at but like he said every pay plan is different even though I don’t do the finance portion of it I will still get paid off of the finance portion of it. Edit: I would like to also add that I work at a dealership chain. The CEO of my dealership owns multiple dealership all over the northern part of America. I have another friend who works at another chain and gets the same type of pay plan so I would say the chain dealership would be the ones that have the best pay plan. Because of this pay structure I averaged selling about 17 cars a month and made 130k my very first year selling cars.
I’m new to you’re channel. I’m starting at a big dealership in the area and I’m super excited a little scared but I know people love me. I wanna thank you for all you’re informative videos I watch them and listen to them literally all day since I chose to get in the car industry🤍wish me luck!!
Left my 67k job to try and be a car salesman for a ford dealer just cuz i was bored at my job. Well, i ran into a lot of possible costumers who i knew were probably going to end up getting repod because even tho they could buy the car at the time, they were livign paycheck to paycheck. Just couldnt do it. You need to be a certain type of person to be a salesman
Glad I found this video! I wasn't sure if I want to become a salesman but I have a fashion on cars and enjoyed doing sales stuff from my previous job and this video give me confidence that this might be the next job for me
I might try out selling cars, currently I own my own business and can't make nowhere near this. Friend of mine pulls in 20k to 30k per month pretty consistently selling cars.
I start my first day in car sales tomorrow, at a local Chevrolet dealership mostly focused on pickup trucks (we're in horse country). No draw, flat monthly base pay of $2k, 25% commission on profit from sales. It's not my first time in sales, but it is my first time in automotive sales or working mostly on commission (though $2k a month is better than most jobs I've ever had). Having spent a decade in fine dining/food and beverage im used to working 50-60 hours per week. These videos have been extremely encouraging and hopefully will turn out to be very helpful.
Looking forward to learning from you. I’m starting my career as a salesmen this week and have no experience at all. I’m subscribing, I need all the help I can get lol
Very honest of you Christopher to share this. You are a very hard-working guy so not surprise you made as much as you did. You would do well in real estate as well.
Real Estate has been down because of high interest rates. Existing owners don't want to give up their 3.5% loans. However, people still need to buy cars when theirs wear out.
…at the end of the day, putting 60+ hours making $100K+ per year, and 35 hours making $85K per year…I think I prefer the latter though. The amount of hours/time one puts in…making that $100K+ may not sound that much. Just sayin’.
I look at it like this: what hours do you think 100k earners are working in other professions? Unless it's the CEO, you can bet they put in 50+ hours. A rule of thumb is that if you want an above average salary, you're going to have to put in above average effort.
Hey, great video! I'm unlucky because I live in the UK and it's impossible to earn anywhere near those numbers here as a car salesman. A good salesman selling 20 cars a month in the UK would earn about £45000. The US sounds crazy👍
Walked out of a honda dealership last month because i remembered what a pain it is to buy from a dealership. Cant wait till all manufacturers move to online sales like Tesla.
@@carsunlocked It's not nice or mean. The dealership model is an outdated dinosaur hanging on because of outdated laws preventing manufacturers from selling directly. Let's face the facts. Dealerships add zero value. That's not a knock on the people who work there.
It will never happen. Products need local representation to assure service. The manufacturer will never invest in direct sales and deal with the public. They want that buffer and could never manage the sale and what is involved.
Great video. Congratulations on your success. Another key point would be to know your products well. Many a times I have required to let the salesman know how the tech inside the car works. They usually tell you run of the mill stuff. What can make you stand out as to how you bring the the uniqueness of the car in forefront. Hardly that’s done at the dealership what I have observed. You gotta be passionate about it.
Another point to add is research the person coming in, especially online leads, if you can’t them on LinkedIn or their social you can find out what they’re interested in and how you could potentially pull their emotional strings
I’ve ALWAYS wanted to do car sales. I love cars. And have a lot of just book knowledge on them (don’t want me working on them… lol). I’m great with people and have a good work ethic. Im organized and always on time… if not early. What’s held me back is the commission part of it. We have some great- like really good car dealerships here in town. Even so… my concern is quitting my job that I’m making $90,000 a year at (extremely stressed and not something I really enjoy anymore 7 years in the business) and go into this business doing something with cars and sales. I know I’d be great at it… but is it worth it!? Just fearful of taking that step into the unknown. I’m married, have a nice house and cars, wife works too. She knows this is something I’ve wanted to do too, buuuuuttt her concern is the same- can we make ends meet still? Is there health insurance, PTO, benefits to working at a dealership? Sorry for the rambling, but super cool informative video that made me wonder more good questions!
After 17 years truck driving and warehouse logistics I’m finished just got hired at a jeep Chrysler dealer start in a week or so .. thanks for the information
@@carsunlocked slowed down following months. Sucks lol. Still got 12 with a goal of 10 but I shouldve had 18. Title/approval issues. But the hooks people get is demoralizing!
I like door to door better... You go after the customer.... You can write your own paycheck... instead of waiting for somebody to walk through the door or calling on your phone all day chasing business...
5k per month in commission. Don't do it then. Go get a b2b sales job. Work from home. Don't get a draw (get an actual base salary $60-150k). Then double that in commission.
If a car dealer pays $10K and sells for $13k you’re probably getting a min deal $100-150. After they tack on pac(not pack, literally an acronym meaning protected against commision which is just to say they don’t pay you on it.) Then tax, title and doc fee($500-900 that you guessed right, they ain’t paying you on it). Not too mention that if they pay $10k for a car they are probably gonna pac it before it gets there and they pac it again. They pay $10k for a vehicle you can sell it for $15k out the door and they show you as a 3,000 loss on your deal. What are you going to do about it? You don’t know the numbers. Then wait until you find out about dealer hold back lol. Where in new cars they get paid on about 3% of the sale as hold back but don’t pay you on it as an agreement with the manufacturer lol. The number 1 motto when you start out is stay dumb as long as you can. Because when you realize how much the dealership rips you off you won’t want to work there. Make $60k to maybe 70k. Sure. While working 48 scheduled hours a week. Be talked to and treated like trash. Be talked down if you only work the 48 hours. Work all day Saturday. Have split days off. There’s a reason turnover is high af.
Fellow Canadian here! Do you have any tips for a person in their early 20s that never did sales and wants to get hired at a dealership? For example: - What to include on your resume - Where to apply - How to handle a call for an interview - How to show some knowledge about the brand and impress the dealership into hiring you. - Etc.
Thanks for commenting a lot of people have been asking me this therefore i plan to post a video on it shortly. What i would recommend if you are in Ontario is getting your omvic certification

hey man a little late to say congrats on the job lol but im in the same boat as you were in a year ago, could you perhaps answer those questions you had a year ago for me? id really appreciate it thanks!
My biggest barrier is that I don't own any business casual wear suitable for that work environment. I want to get into it but I might need to grab a temporary 15/hr job just so I can buy the required clothes.
well At least that gives you more incentive to upsell warranties etc... otherwise if I was a salesman i would leave that to the finance guy to try and push...
@@Esaloi I got the job. I was happy at first, but I don’t think I’m going to continue. It’s a bad month and a bad time for car sales in general with the shortage. We barely have enough inventory. People are not happy about paying 5-10 grand over msrp . Our dealership is pretty empty most days. Also at my dealership they just capped our commission. I just sold my first car. Instead of getting 1,500, I got $600. Ok? Not terrible. Right? No because today I get my check and its $200! They took over 50% draw. I work over 40 hours. To get $200 feels like a slap to the face. Congrats on nearly hitting 200k! . I have a similar history as you.. in my 5 years of auto-sales the first 3 was on the sales floor. Year 1, 55k. Year 2, 80k year 3 90kish. Once I switched into sub prime (not actually sub prime per se, it’s just our way of describing the hybrid sales position) my income sky rocketed. Year 1 I made 185k. I’m now on year 2 and I’ve made $85k year to date. Yep, just 3 months. It’s ridiculous how much money there is to be made in this industry and ESPECIALLY if you can master the art of sub prime (again, just another way of saying hybrid salesmen) as it is a very different process altogether. At least the way I do it anyways

We make nothing in the UK. My first month out of the box 25 years ago I sold 20 cars and made £1800 after tax. That’s six days a week 10 hours a day. The most I ever made was £5000. It’s just not worth it in the uk. It’s a piss poor career. I’m 48 years old and almost dead.

Simple stuff gang. Sell 20 on a new and used lot and you will average $450-$500 per unit with bonuses. Now the real questions you should ask is how the hell do i sell 20 units per month. Thats actually simple. It's just math😂😂
Our dealership became a A to Z store 2 years ago. Our GM has changed our pay plan 3 times within these 2 years. My question for you is...did your front end pay percentage go down when they switched you to sell both. Ours went down to 20% front, 20% on backend. That might sound good, but we have a huge pack on both.
@@carsunlocked We got rid of our finance managers. So as a salesperson, I act as both. The Managers print out the docs, I get them signed and try and sell the backend product. Sounds great right? I called Mercedes ,after watching your vid, was told that they dont have any money to sales man unless they make a sale. its 100 percent commission!!!!
20-25%!?!?! Maybe I won't go with this dealership. Currently, I was interviewed at two separate dealerships. The first one was based salary (hourly) +8% commission. The other dealership hasn't said what they were going to do as commission

I sold a truck that had a 10k gross on it on Jan 3rd 2022, I was expecting to get paid on it on Jan 25th but accounting didn't log it in and gave me a draw instead. This month has been super slow. I'm also only 2 months into my car sales career. Am I wrong to think that maybe there is some funny business going on here? Are they purposely putting me in the draw?
thats tough at the end of the day your still making the same amount of many its just a matter of when. I always recommend tracking your commissions. If you are aware of your pay plan you should be able to calculate your commissions pretty accurately. That way youll know if they are paying you the accurate amount. I dont think your dealership would benefit from having you in the draw was most likely a timing issue
I just got hired as a car sales person. Would I be able to keep my part-time job or would the car sales person be sufficient to make a living? What would be your advice?
you might be able to at first but if you want to be successful you need to fully commit the last thing you want to do is miss out on commission because of your other employment

Incorrect. Front end is the UI/UX that customers see. Its responsible for displaying forms, the layout of the website/ etc etc Back end is what handles processing things on the front end.

Cant wait till all manufacturers move to online sales like Tesla.
what a nice thing to say
@@carsunlocked It's not nice or mean.
The dealership model is an outdated dinosaur hanging on because of outdated laws
preventing manufacturers from selling directly.

Instead of getting 1,500, I got $600. Ok? Not terrible. Right? No because today I get my check and its $200! They took over 50% draw. I work over 40 hours. To get $200 feels like a slap to the face. Hey brotha question, I got hired at a toyota dealer the new lot is empty like 15 cars the used has more than that 30 percent commission and a little on back end what do you think about that like even with toytoa lot empty the new side
thats a great entry level commission rate. right now my lot has 11 new cars available its the same every where. I made a video on how to flip people off new to used be sure to check that out!
Ok I will do that thanks 👍
I can't find that video anywhere :-/
On new expect 0 profit.. mini commision 100% of the time on new.
man what dealership do you work at
hey is there a license to do the back end selling as well, being the finance guy?
no sir its the same
Commissions on new cars vs used cars??
typically you can make higher commission on used cars but it all depends where you work
