'Second Race for the Days of Thunder Cars'
Jimmy Hensley is on the pole by drawing. Greg Sacks in a Days of Thunder movie car, the #46 'City Chevrolet' Chevrolet Lumina for Hendrick Motorsports, starts 2nd, leads 4 laps including the first lap and finishes 2nd. Sacks, if he was not leading, stayed in 2nd place during the entire race. Darrell Waltrip's Hendrick Motorsports' Crew and Crew Chief Jeff Hammond serviced Sacks' car for the race. Sacks' car also has in-car cameras from CBS for the race. Ken Schrader in the #25 Kodiak Chevrolet Lumina also for Hendrick Motorsports wins the race.
Days of Thunder was released to the box office on June 27, 1990. Tommy Ellis, Bobby Hamilton, Greg Sacks and Hut Stricklin drove cars in actual NASCAR Winston Cup Series races to provide real racing footage for the movie and offered technical advice while stunt drivers and Tom Cruise drove cars in staged scenes. In the movie Cruise plays the part of fictional character Cole Trickle who drives the #46 'City Chevrolet' Chevrolet Lumina. Rick Hendrick of Hendrick Motorsports provided cars for the movie. City Chevrolet is Hendrick's actual car dealership in Charlotte, NC.

"Research and development car" looks like Cole Trickles car from Days of Thunder 😂. They probably could not say what it was.
Zoomer30 thats what it was they wanted footage of the cars starting in daytona. they started 2 cars in the 500 as well but could only run 100 miles.

Everybody knew the car was there to get movie footage. It was no secret to anybody at the time. The cars they used to get into the races were built by Hendrick Motorsports. The 18!hardees and 51 Exxon car were in the 1990 Daytona 500 too

I remember watching this race back in the day but I've just realized how low the roofline was on the lumina
