    Goody's 300 - Race 1 of 31
    Daytona International Speedway
    Daytona Beach, FL
'Fourth Race for the Days of Thunder Cars'
Darrell Waltrip is on the pole. Greg Sacks in the #46 'City Chevrolet' Chevrolet Monte Carlo for Robert Gee is in the race. This is not a Days of Thunder movie car. Rick Hendrick of Hendrick Motorsports is a close friend of Robert Gee, therefore how Sacks got put in the car for this race. Hendrick also for this race lended his sponsorship in reference to City Chevrolet for the car and let Gee use the same paint scheme that is being used on the Days of Thunder movie car. A crash involving approximately 20 cars occurs on lap 14. Footage of this crash was used in Days of Thunder. Dale Earnhardt in the #3 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet Lumina for Dale Earnhardt, Inc. wins the race. At the conclusion of the race a helicopter goes in the air along with Daytona International Speedway ordering everyone to stay in the grandstands and not to leave at the request of the Days of Thunder film crew. Tom Cruise then gets in the #51 Mello Yello Chevrolet Lumina, a Days of Thunder movie car, and drives around the track to do a victory lap sequence for the upcoming movie.
Days of Thunder was released to the box office on June 27, 1990. Tommy Ellis, Bobby Hamilton, Greg Sacks and Hut Stricklin drove cars in actual NASCAR Winston Cup Series races to provide real racing footage for the movie and offered technical advice while stunt drivers and Tom Cruise drove cars in staged scenes. In the movie Michael Rooker plays the part of fictional character Rowdy Burns who drives the #51 Exxon Chevrolet Lumina and Cary Elwes plays the part of fictional character Russ Wheeler who drives the #18 Hardee's Chevrolet Lumina. Cruise plays the part of fictional character Cole Trickle who drives the #46 'City Chevrolet,' #46 Superflo Motor Oil and the #51 Mello Yello Chevrolet Luminas. Rick Hendrick of Hendrick Motorsports provided cars for the movie. City Chevrolet is Hendrick's actual car dealership in Charlotte, NC.

So cool to see Neil interview Dale at the end and then as a bonus Steve Byrnes interviewing Greg Sacks and Bobby Labonte.
