  • Doctor Who - The Music
Original Vinyl Pressing from 1983 - from BBC Records (REH 462 Stereo)
Recorded from Audio Technica AT-LP120-USB Record Player
The BBC Radiophonic Workshop's long (and Continuing) association with The Doctor Who series began with the signature tune for the very first programme. Ron Grainer provided the composition notes and the Workshop did the rest.
During the past twenty years, the Workshop has provided all the special sounds and latterly the incidental music for the past three series. Most famous sounds are of course, the Tardis materialisation and dematerialisation sounds (not an elephant in labour, but the strings of an old piano recorded and treated) and the treatment of speech which produced the Dalek Voices. Brian Hodgson was creator of the sounds for the first nine years, since which time Dick Mills has continued the tradition still making use of the Workshop's synthesizers and acoustically recorded real sounds.
The incidental music is composed by Malcolm Clarke, Peter Howell and Roger Limb on a shared basis over the series, which accounts for the varying styles of composition but which are nevertheless just what the doctor ordered.
    Side 2 features ten tracks:
    1. Omega Field Force
Through the opening observation screen of the flying Tardis, a strange ship is seen aproaching from that part of space and time known as the Arc of Infinity. A force field created by Omega takes over the Tardis.
    2. Ergon Threat
Meanwhile, in an underground cellar somewhere in Amsterdam, the Ergon (under orders from Omega) overcomes Teagan and Colin with an energy laser.
    3. Termination of the Doctor
Subsequently on Galifrey, the Matrix has also fallen under Omega's control; Nyssa pleads for the Doctor's life but he is 'terminated' and disappears into the Matrix itself. (Bands 1, 2 and 3 - Arc of Infinity starring Peter Davidson, January 1983. Music: Roger Limb. Special Sound: Dick Mills)
    4. Banqueting Music
The Time Winds, which constantly blow on the Reverse side of the Gateway mirror, act as a background to ghostly banqueting music. (Warrior's Gate starring Tom Baker, January 1981. Music: Peter Howell. Special Sound: Dick Mills)
    5. TSS Machine Attacked
Adric is trapped helplessly in the TSS Machine as it is attacked by the Kinda led by Aris, who is under the control of the Mara... (Kinda starring Peter Davidson, February 1982. Music: Peter Howell. Special Sound: Dick Mills)
    6. Janissary Band
In this excerpt from the sequel to 'Kinda' the Janissary ceremonial band passes by. (Snakedance starring Peter Davidson, January 1983. Music: Peter Howell. Special Sound: Dick Mills)
    7. Subterranean Caves
The Life-Detecting Scanner on the Earth's surface traces events in the subterranean caves where mysterious Androids glide to and fro; a rockfall adds to the terrors awaiting the Troopers in the darkness.
    8. Requium
A Requium for a Trooper mortally wounded by an Android's laser.
    9. March of the Cybermen
Space music leads into the vast cargo hold aboard an inter-galactic freighter. Within Cryogenic Capsules the Cybermen are awating the signal to emerge and march against the Doctor. (Bands 7, 8 and 9 - Earthshock starring Peter Davidson, March 1982. Music: Malcolm Clarke. Special Sound: Dick Mills)
    10. Doctor Who
The Signature Tune to the current series, from August 1980. (Music: Ron Grainer arr. Peter Howell/Erle Music - Chappell Music Ltd.)

The incidental music of Geoffrey Burgon for 'Terror Of The Zygons' and 'The Seeds Of Doom' has its own CD, and is among the best such scores the series ever produced.

Played this album to death in the 80s. Nice to return to it years later. So many recognizable sound bytes

Weird how Roger Limb's Who music changes so radically after 1983. Pre Season 21 he's more like a Depeche Mode-performing- Dudley Simpson!
Would love to see Volume 2 uploaded so people can compare the music from "Androzani". This volume comes across partly like a Sound FX album on certain tracks. 6:00 is the highlight here (along with Malcolm.Clarke's Earthshock towards the end) .

Before Androzani, Roger Limb doesn't really get much of a meaty dramatic story to sink his teeth into like Malcolm Clarke does and it shows in his music. Time-Flight in particular sounds like the fare he'd tootle out for the story segments in Words And Pictures because that's EXACTLY what it looks like.

Good point. Certainly with Graeme Harper he developed a more recognisable 'signature style'!

The music for Earthshock is soooo good.
