I didn't realise that the story was a Christian reflection of Christ. It just hit me now! 17/5/23 @00:49am. It was my favourite story as a child.( That. And The Magic Faraway Tree!)

I love these novels, but they include the exact role-reversal that you’re disparaging. Dragons are not always evil creatures. The dragons in “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” are Eustace and, most likely, Lord Octesian. They aren’t inherently evil, they are victims of their own greed. Eustace’s story is one of humility and atonement. I don’t mind stories of dragons and witches being misunderstood, because they are metaphors for how our judgment can be leveled unfairly at those who are considered outcasts. Jesus didn’t associate with only those who were recognized as “good.”

Exactly; in Scripture, we are told not to judge by mere appearances (even Satan can appear as an angel of light) and that we will know people's hearts by their actions. We see this in Narnia on multiple occasions. There are good giants and bad giants, and we know which is which by the side they fight for. There are good magicians (Coriakin in "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader") and bad magicians (Uncle Andrew), and we know which is which by how they treat other people and animals. There are good rulers (King Lune and the Narnian kings) and bad rulers (the Tisroc, Jadis, Miraz), and we know them by how they treat their subjects (are they tools for power, or are they people to be served?). In the case of Edmund and Jadis, his fault isn't questioning whether they should trust a bird or believe Mr. Tumnus's claim that she is a witch, but ignoring the evidence in front of his eyes: The Witch's secret police tore Tumnus's cave apart and charged him with the "treason" of "fraternizing with humans." He has also conveniently forgotten her initial treatment of him, and fails to see that all her kindnesses are merely bait to lure him.

What you get wrong is that Eustace was turned into a dragon as a human. If Eustace was born as a dragon, you would have a point. CS Lewis didn't set out to subvert roles. Even Aslan is still dangerous.

@@bodvarson1933 But, as a dragon Eustace maintains his half good/half bad personality and becomes a much better 'person' through the experience. This is actually quite a transformation of what a dragon CAN be. If he had become more 'dragon-like' or more bad it would have reinforced the role of a dragon as irredeemable bad guy.
For example, imagine if in the bible someone had been turned into a snake or serpent. If then we had a talking snake who was doing SOME good things and some bad things just like any other human being, what would that tell us?: I suggest this tacit implication: that klike role reversing Jesus Christ who hung out with the 'bad' people that 'good' people looked down upon, some of the 'lowest' will be VERY close to 'god'.
C.S. Lewis, like the new testament, subverted PLENTY of roles...even as it, contradictorily, tries to maintain a lot of roles and rules.
The role of male lions is not just to be 'still dangerous', but to be dangerous to just about everybody but other lions...and that only extends to lions within his own pride. The role of REAL lions, in relationship to humans, is that they are man eaters. Lions in stories and in real life, most freqently kill humans and their allies/resources (guard dogs/sheep etc.)

@@homertangler9529You definetly don't understand what Lewis was doing by turning Eustace into a dragon. The goal wasn't to subvert a role.

@@bodvarson1933 Well there is a part of me willing to settle for the victory of you not being to able state that, regardless of the "goal", in the end the result WAS the subversion of a role. ...one of many.
Nevertheless, I will ask the obvious question:
What is the evidence you would use to show us HOW you KNOW (and for that matter, know DEFINITELY) what C.S. Lewis's goals were?
