Rendon is doing something a-typical....hitting off his front foot(like Aaron)....i dont know if any of this is applicable if the balance points are different from what most hitters who hit off back foot....still comes down to correct decision making, precise timng & a bit of luck(some are luckier than others)
Thanks for this video Matt! I've had a lot of trouble staying inside the ball and my bat direction was terrible. I would only be able to pull the ball and when I did, it either started slicing towards the left-field line or it was a top-spin pop-up. I'm trying to get my bat path to go from inside to out, and by watching this and by taking some notes, I think I'm stepping in the right direction! Thanks again!
6’0 223 that’s a strong safety size! Seriously though, I’ve boxed for Silver Glove and trained in Muaythai since I was a little kid and every coach said never to lift weights for mass. Their reasoning was all the same-muscles can get in the way for efficient striking (A large pec will push a rear cross outward; also the increased weight slows down hand speed) They’d all say, did Ali lift weights!? Tyson? So I’ve always wondered, does gaining significant muscle mass eventually affect a bat swing negatively? Perhaps, gaining that muscle altered your swing.
Diego Fianza oh shit, I didn’t mean to use roid era players. Another example, I bet you are a more powerful striker at 220 vs the 180 pound version of yourself in your younger years.
Depends on the type of hitter, bat speed was a big deal in the 90s and 00s not its launch angle. But Matt could explain it even more so, but look at the amount of skinny dudes ripping HR ins the pros.
Mayo Luck actually it doesn’t. Dee Gordon would be Able to hit the ball harder if he gained 20 pounds of muscle. A player who concentrated on bat speed will be able to swing a bat faster as he got stronger and bigger. Launch angle doesn’t mean crap if you can’t swing the bat fast enough to transfer energy into the ball to take advantage of optimal launch angles.
Matt, Im 24 and really want to play baseball for like a weekend club when im not working. I played in middle school but quit and I still love the game. I live in Northern Illinois and really have no clue where to start. Any tips?
Tony-Two-Bags was the best third baseman in baseball and one of the most consistent hitters. I couldn’t believe the Nats let him go, what the hell were they thinking?
Hi Matt! I love your videos, keep em' coming man. I have a question : Why do some hitters (ex: Manny, Ortiz, Judge) end up with the bat in one hand when they finish their swing while others like Pedroia or Hosmer (or me, haha) hold their bat in both hands from start to finish? Do you think it makes a difference? Is it only a question of personal preference? Do you think it's awkward to finish your swing while still holding the bat in both hands? Thanks!
Paul Lebel I have asked this question to many of my coaches and they always say that it is a personal preference. As long as you don’t let go of the bat with your hand too early, a one hand finish is alright. Technically, after you make contact with the ball, it doesn’t matter what you do because the ball is already hit.
Hey Matt. Would hitting inside out be same as what they used to refer to as shortening up? Seemed to be an approach most guys would take with 2 strikes. Or am I off base here?
Hey Matt, a good subject you can do for another UA-cam video... Do players in the minor leagues have part time jobs or what are living arrangements for minor leaguers? Do they have apartments, host families, stay in hotels? Just some ideas for more videos. Hope you’re doing good, man 👍🏼
I swear hitting is to technical now, I like the old days they just hit the ball.Baseball now days strike out or big damage. They got small players like Billy Hamilton all screwed up.
Over The Hill Sk8tr/Flyr you cant touch pitchers nowadays without good mechanics, pitchers have evolved with better pitches, velo, and spin rate, you can’t just go up there and swing the bat, you won’t generate the success you want without proper force and technique
I’ll upvote even though it’s not more MLB The Show. ;)
Great video! Finally, somebody explains inside out clearly. Tilt/NOT knob to the ball.
Best video on bat path I’ve ever seen.
Best sports channel on UA-cam and it’s not even close

A stronger athlete is a better athlete. Did Barry Bonds stats get better or worse after he gained 30 pounds of muscle? Mark McGuire? Sammy Sosa?
johndim11 that’s so obvious...I overlooked the roid era.

I know you only played minimal games with them, but when you were with the Yankees minor league team, did you ever meet the bat dog at the time?
