CCL was doing a security check. If we don't want to be disturbed, we tell our attendant hey! If I don't remove DND by 200 PM we are fine. I also let them know we are aware they have a lot of cabins to clean so if that DND is there until noon, you don't have to even change towels. You can't just say nothing and leave it on the door for 3 days. Who's to say there isn't a dead spouse inside??? 😬😵😮 you never know nowadays

While on a cruise a couple of years ago, my hubby and I were not feeling well so we didn't leave our cabin for a little over 24 hours. During that time our room attendant knocked on the door to check on us to make sure all was well. We answered the knock, and we were not offended that they were inquiring on our well-being. It really isn't that difficult.

I'm assuming that the cruise can tell if a person's cruise card has been swiped as well? If they have not left the room, have not used their card, have not been heard from -- yeah, the cruise line has to check-in. Imagine the scandal if someone died in there and wasn't discovered!

I have to agree with Carnival on this one. If the passengers didn't want them to enter, they should have answered the door (or at least responded through the door) when the steward and then the supervisor knocked. And it's good to know about that policy. Maybe Carnival should consider adding some verbiage to the door hanger that says that if you leave it out for 24+ hours the steward is obligated to check on you.

I stayed in what's considered a decent hotel chain in San Diego near the Mexican border and they purposely do not give you a do not disturb thing for the door. even locked the deadbolt but they were still able to open the room with their key card. I would sit there and yell through the door no thanks no thanks I didn't want housekeeping and they would just keep sitting there saying room check room check we need to check the room and I'm like no thanks and they still opened the door. Totally disrespectful. I was ticked. I will never stay there again

What's his name? What's the fb page? What does he look like? How long has he been missing?? I am constantly amazed at the ineffective communication in our society. It stops things getting accomplished. Like people who return a phone call without answering the questions already asked, but hang up thinking 'I did my part' or 'all I could do' while leaving questions on the table:/. I mean no offense, but really...if it is so heartbreaking, why not help her? If you post here with people in the mindset of missing persons, and apparent interest..why would you not include details that could help your 'friend'? Possibly help this current family as well...may find there is a connection between the two. I mean, c.s.

@@darleencherry4374 so far we’ve never had a room steward hear us, or at least what we’ve said. Normally, it’s come in! Sometimes wait a minute. Since I nap midday I’m not likely to hear them either. And yes, they’ve entered when we didn’t hear them and quickly apologized. Often it’s to bring ice they couldn’t get earlier or to bring a perk.
On one of the first trips we did a Guy got on in Athens locked his door the next night they think and then his door was always lock. No one was answering the phone either. After the 3rd day, Alexandria, they used a key to get in. We found out about it when we weren’t leaving on time from the port. They were having trouble getting the consulate and a body after dark in a Muslim country has addition issues! Yes, it was a weekend, Saturday I think! All of his contact information was wrong, which was distressing the ship personnel and making everything more complicated.
This was years ago, long before hotels did wellness checks.

I agree with the checking policy. I worked within the security industry and we did check the rooms after a few days with the “do not disturb” sign posted. And I can truly say there were some instances that were very disturbing. So good job for checking. You’re not going to make everybody happy.

I also think there should be some sort of standard that the attendant must get in to clean room at least once during trip. I can only imagine how disgusting they or their room must be. Yeah, take your sign down.

Not that easy. The point was the ship wanted room access every other day. In a hotel I will often put out the Do Not Disturb sign because I am not there and don't want a maid to have unlimited time with my personal possessions. I'm sure it's the same thing for many onboard. While I would hope all are honest, odds aren't that great.

Not always that easy if you are sleeping, pleasuring or taking a shower. Room steward or other crew member knocks and then opens the door after only a few seconds. If the “Do Not Disturb” on for an extended period and nocody has heard from the guest and no activity on the medallion, that might be well be cause for concern but, in plain English, Do Not Disturb means DO NOT DISTURB.

I get the frustration. I learned early on in cruising that they have to do a wellness check. Not like land travel where they wont even knock to deliver your room service if you have that sign on your door. I cruise solo and keep my room pretty tidy, dont really want anyone in my room so I tell my steward on day 1 that the sign will be on my door all cruise but I make sure they see me at least once a day.

This happened to me on a Princess cruise I was on solo. The cabin steward saw me coming and going and then let himself in after seeing me enter the room. And no, he didn't knock and gave no reason why he was there. I immediately kicked him out and requested a change in cabin with a female cabin steward. They complied, so they knew something was up. It was scary and ruined my cruise.

I had to go to the infirmary with a UTI (yeah it happens) we had been out all day on an excursion taking tequila shots, and hit me as we came back on board. I left hubby to rest and went to see the doc. Hubby took a nap as I insisted he do. husband was in a deep sleep, and because I was still feeling sick and a little disoriented, I could not remember our room number. I must have looked a little desperate because before I knew It, our steward called me by my first name and walked right up to me, I said where I had been and needed to get back into the room, he was so kind and helpful. He ushered me to the right cabin and hubby was in a deep sleep lol. Steward opened the door and let me in first, and poor hubby was so unaware of what was going on as he woke up. We all laughed and rest of the cruise we both felt so grateful.

On my first solo cruise a steward informed me she came in my room to clean it not realizing I was there sleeping until after she cleaned the bathroom (I work nights so I sleep in the daytime; I'm a very hard sleeper; I didn't have the Do Not Disturb sign; and I cocoon myself under the covers when I sleep). I told her it's okay, it happens, and told her my sleep schedule (I wake up around 1pm). So going forward she worked around my schedule. She was very new to the job, but I couldn't have a more professional person cater to my room and make my first cruising experience a comfortable one. I thanked her, wished her all the best, noted her service on the survey and gave her a very large cash tip.

On a cruise a couple of years ago(post covid) I had my do not disturb on, on the disembarkation day- I was in the shower around 7:00AM. This is early for me- I am NOT a morning person at all. I had the room attendant come INTO my room and bang on the bathroom door and rattle the handle and told me I had to get out of the room. I jumped out and wrapped a towel around myself to "answer" the bathroom door only to find the attendant going about my room removing trash can and the main cabin door chocked open, balcony blinds wide open. WTF! I said to him "sir, seriously can you please get out". He muttered something and left. Went down to the front desk with by bag in tow but the line was way too long- I had a transfer bus to catch at 8 and couldn't wait. I mentioned it in the after cruise survey, but never heard anything back. I'm not one to waste my time writing an email just to get some excuses. I understand they have a ton of rooms to clean and get ready, but common. I also understand their "checking" on cruisers that haven't left their rooms for over 24 hours.

Tony the Lego trick is great. I use to bring snap it models for the grandkids when we cruised. We'd spend an hour before dinner putting them together. This gave my wife some free time and shower time.

I agree with the cruise line checking in on passengers if they leave the do not disturb sign on for days and do not answer their door. I am sure there were multiple attempts by staff to do a quick check in as most people either eventually need to leave the room for food or water or order room service. There are more stories of staff finding sick, injured or deceased people in rooms than there are complaints about privacy.

My husband and I were both in the cabin bathroom. Husband showering and me on the toilet. We were even talking abd all of axsudden, tge cabin steward flung open the bathroom door. It was a shock but I think more for the cabin steward. Lesson learned. Always make sure the do not disturb light is on outside the cabin. We thought it was on but well, it wasn't.

My first cruise was on the Home Lines Oceanic in 1975 out of New York, I was 15 at the time. Built in 1963, she stayed in service until 2012! Her capacity was only 1600 passengers. The Oceanic was definitely not like the ships of today, as far as activities go, but she was beautiful and solidified my love of cruising. Now i'm 64 and heading out once again on my favorite type of vacation. I don't care where i go, i just like to be on the ocean.

I think the best age of a cruise ship is about 5 years. It is still new enough to be exciting, but old enough to stop them charging a massive amount extra to sail on a new ship.

RCI Quantum of the Seas will be celebrating its 20th anniversary of christening later this year. It certainly did NOT feel like it was past prime when we cruised to Alaska just last year.
It already had one refresh, but the room and amenities around the ship do not look/feel worn out aged. The decor is still modern, matching the amenities on just about any ship out there.

Greetings from Nieuw Amsterdam making our inaugural call to Cabo Rojo in the DR on our way to the canal and eventually San Diego! We were excited to dock as the itinerary had it listed as a tender port because the pier wasn't finished. We're the second ship to dock here and they're giving us fireworks sendoff tonight. Hope you have a great cruise and good luck with Baltimore.

On long solo cruises, I like to sleep late and sometimes will stay in the cabin all day reading or painting. I always tell the steward to not be concerned, but when they do check on me, I totally understand. Sometimes they call instead of knock and that's fine too.

It is interesting to see that of the three publicly traded cruise companies, only Royal Caribbean has reached pre-Covid levels. None of them have paid a dividend in years. Viking reported a loss for last year. The full details of the public offering will also be of interest as to who gets what.

Maybe Carnival should have looked a little deeper first. I bet the guests ate at some point in this 24 hours period. So even “IF” they really never left the room; they would have ordered room service. Because no one goes on a cruise and doesn’t eat! 🍗🥩🥐🍕🍰🍦

I agree that they need to check on people if there is concerns. However I don't know if they did it or not call the cabin 1st, then take the next steps. I have to do it in the apartment rentals as well; not 24 hours but if there is not any movement, mail piling up etc, and we use the police.

That's reasonable that staff are checking on passangers. If someone is in need of medical attention or God forbid passed away they need to get you out and start making arrangements and notifications.

Tough call on the uninvited walk in. Had their cruise cards been used recently? Did they try a phone call first? There are many things that could come into play both good and bad in why the do not disturb sign was there. After hearing about the room steward with the cameras and hiding under the bed it may happen more often. Plus I am a solo cruiser and I do not need daily service in my room and prefer them not to come in the room, they are busy enough without doing unneeded room servicing.

There's no mention of the crew calling the room's phone first to get an answer. That should have been their FIRST attempt then, go onto their policy of personally checking for wellbeing if there isn't a response.
