Bro. I've been TRYING to find a camera that's as easy to carry around as a smartphone. All of the are just too thick to have in your pocket. Do you know of any?
It's now just registering that I spend 10+ minutes once a week watching an Australian pair of hands, on a green Ipad desk, move around various technologies
Your natural frustrations with the phone touched on points that absolutely no other phone reviewer made. Your video was a refreshingly unique critique and I learned a bunch of new stuff about the camera that I didn't know before. Thanks!
Your comment touched on topics that absolutely no other commenter made. Your comment was a refreshing unique comment and I read stuff I didn’t read before. Thanks!

Lest be honest though the newest phones do far beyond what anyone needs. Unless your playing resident evil and capturing in their upgraded 4k, you can literally buy an iPhone 13 and get the exact same thing, if you want to do film buy a camera you can get more settings for less if you want to play high end games get an xbox or pc. As a phone every day product their is no need for there newer phones so all the complaints are meaningless to the average person. Oh i can customise my app icons, who cares.
At a guess, the stereo sound option might be doing a similar thing to Samsung's "zoom sound", where it tries to focus in on subjects that are farther away as you zoom the video. Not sure why they'd call it "stereo sound" but your demo reminded me of zoom sound.
Let’s talk about Practical iPhone 15 reviews - seriously, the main issues this guy is complaining about can easily be fixed with the cinematic mode on the iPhone, which has been around since the iPhone 12 or 13. It’s baffling that he didn’t mention this and decided to keep acting like these problems couldn’t be resolved through settings. Come on, mate!
The opening actually touches on a realisation i had recently: there are almost no mid-tier products left If you want a camera its either some crap for ten bucks that barely functions, or its an incredibly complex machine that you need to learn and master. Same with media players, its either knock of nuggets, or some high end stuff you really invest in. Like, i dont mind spending some money on something i love, but i have many hobbies, and nowadays everything just seems to call out "you gotta pick one and stick to it, if youre not willing to drop 300 dollars on this, you dont like the hobby enough, and you should buy landfill that will break in less than a year like the rest of the plebs" Like no my guy, i jus want _decent_ stuff. It doesnt have to be hand crafted by tibettan monks doing a handstand, i just want a propper, decent start to a hobby to try it out
I know some people have there reservations but I think Oppo works really well as a mid-tier product, it's got all the new features, good build quality (my A57 lasted me 8 years) and comes with a reasonable price tag. Samsung's A series are also similarly good.
Ultimately I think it's because the flagship phones are the only thing most people are seeing marketing for. So many people just buy whatever schlock is advertised to them, regardless if it's financially and practically a terrible buy.
To be fair, I think lens lock being off for default is more useful for most people. Having the option to get the better quality zooms and wide angle at all mid filming is worth the small conk or lack of stabilisation on ultra wide, as most people aren't changing their zoom between as often as a cinematographer. This is especially true since the colours and light performance between the cameras has narrowed to the point where the transition is otherwise visually seamless.
you know this feeling you just can't seem to shake when some ultrawide cctv footage comes up? "If only this video had image stabilization" yeah, me neither.
@@blakksheep736 i know right? honestly a great video to tell people that YOUR PHONE FROM 5 YEARS AGO IS FINE, like honestly i would not want to switch from my lg g8x to something newer just because headphone jack
yup. still have my note 10 plus. will never replace it until it breaks and if it ever does (doubt it ever will, i NEVER update it which means samsung cannot bog it down with more bloatware lol) im gonna get another note 10 plus. on a tangent, i LOVE the narrative these massive companies have about updating. iTs For YoUr seCuRiTy lol. nah fam. you just want to artifically age our hardware with more and more and more worthless bloatware and malware. besides. the only security we need id from companies like you, crapple, samsung, and google. As someone who loves his phone camera, nothing is more frustrating than Apple's automatic "enhancements" that are either on by default, or YOU CAN'T TURN OFF!! Even if you lock exposure, guess what! IT DOESN'T LOCK EXPOSURE!!
@@theboy1625i think its supposed to "remind" us or "indicate" that swipe gestures to access features are available, but i dont need such a reminder so i just want to turn it off. its so annoying.
I remember what was once a Kodak backed photo store close by; and the worse think that could have happened to kodak was phones getting cameras. The moment flip phones got shitty cameras people stopped buying consumer cameras, both film and digital. I will never forget the mountains of awful quality pictures printed and how many people were mad at how bad they were but they still didn't want an actual camera because their phone had one, no matter how bad it was.
Tell me about it, I used to have that happen as an employee in a photo store. It's fun trying to explain that the "camera" is the issue, rather than our kiosks or printers.
@@firestonenightcore8606 yeah we used to have an awesome photo shop. they even did special shit, film still and oldschool developing. its sad thats its gone. they even had a car audio section with a awesome selection of subwoofers and amps back when i was into that. they were professional installers aswell
I'm one of those people that actually uses a proper digital camera. Even though on paper my Nikon p950 gets beaten out by an iPhone 15 pro in almost all specifications except for optical zooms (the p950 has a lot). I still get much much better photos because the raw unprocessed files are actually raw and unprocessed.
I'm a big advocate for "Your old phone is fine," I'd been using the same phone for about 8 years until it literally just died on me today from a memory issue. As long as it runs all your must have apps you don't really need an upgrade
yeah ive only ever had 4 phones in my life. i just wait until the battery gets so bad it has to be plugged in constantly (excluding the first one my parents took away)
Also on year 8 here with an old iPhone, godspeed. Love being able to counter "Pay your bill with our app" smooth-talkers whenever buying a service or renting an apartment. You can just wince and go "Sorry, my phone's too old and your application requires iOS 15..."
9:12 The auto-stabilization is accomplished by digitally cropping in on the shot so you don’t see the edges moving. That obviously doesn’t work when you’re zoomed all the way out to 0.5. The actual camera sensor moves enough to compensate for a bit of wobbling, but if it starts shaking a lot the software starts cropping, hence the need to zoom back in. Hope that makes sense.
it is not just done in software. The main camera on modern phones got stabilization in the camera also. It is that AND the cropping to stay stable that makes a thing in your hand able to be that stable. At least that is what I understand of the modern camera tech.
IIRC in video mode the footage is always cropped a slight bit to account for Electronic Image Stabilization, on my SE switching to the video mode crops into the footage quite a bit. They're using EIS in combination with OIS for extra stabilization, the difference is that the 0.5x lens on the iPhone has no OIS, so you see all the motion blur from your shaky hands being smoothened out by EIS when zoomed out far. When you zoom into the 1x lens that does have OIS, the sensor physically moves, cancelling out the motion blur from hand movement and you get clean footage (unless you move the camera quicker than the OIS can compensate, like for panning or very violent shaking).
IPhone 16 announcement: Since everyone hated the USB-C charging port on the IPhone 15 lineups we Decided to just throw USB-C To the trash bin and we make a revolutionary move to just use wireless charging, yes no more port on an IPhone now just magsafe and your trusty bluetooth to connect your headphones mate, also we made a new revolutionary idea to just remove the magsafe on the normal IPhone lineups(e.g:IPhone 16)now you need to buy the IPhone again everytime you ran out of battery this Idea makes the normal IPhone lineups is now 0.0069grams lighter.
It’s funny how they used to only release a new numbered iPhone every two years, like the S model was only meant to be a minor update to the previous model, but there were more differences between say the 5 and the 5S than there are between the 14 and the 15.
I love how you kinda love Apple, but you're not a Fanboy, you're very constructive with apple. Also, hey, as a filmmaker, I totally get why you don't use the pro camera. The camera is only as useful as what you need it for, and hey, the phone is better for what you need then a pro camera. Respect!
I fully agree! As someone who uses android (currently on the s23 ultra for that gorgeous camera), and who has always had a hatred of Apple (as a company), I can't help but admire when I find people who aren't fanboys of Apple, and who use it because of all of its wonderful features... not just because it's Apple. Apple has so many fantastic products, that most other companies struggle to match or replicate. It's just that they keep everything so locked down and unusable beyond basic things, and the whole status symbol its made for itself, makes it such an off putting thing for me.
@@thomasschaufler987I’d much rather use a product that works 98% of the time than a product that works only 60% of the time which is why I stick with Apple. Apple isn’t about “being the first” anymore as they have been for a long time, but rather making something that works. Yes this video pointed out things that “didn’t work” but it’s 1% of the phone amongst other things. These are software fixes and Apple even focuses on supporting even the oldest of their devices which android doesn’t do. My note 5 is literally useless because of software and iPhones in that time frame are still supported. Yes SOME things are still “locked down” but for the good reason of letting things work on the phone and updates come to everyone at the same time letting everyone enjoy new software/hardware features at the same time. It’s about quality now. Not being first.
@@thomasschaufler987 You have completely echoed my thought on this matter! I too have the s23 ultra, and I plan on using it for at least 5 years/until it dies. I do not hate Apple products, I think they make some really good stuff especially for professional use, but I cannot in good concious support them because to me they are the absolute dictionary definition of corporate greed and represent everything wrong with capitalism.
@@arvak3999 ....have you spent any time looking at samsung? between the constant embezzlement and tax fraud, horrendous treatment of their workforce, collobrating with the Japanese in WW2, helping prop up South Korea's fascist dictatorships, and now the "get out of jail free" by the 'democracy' they prop up everytime they get pinged for something. they make apple look like saints.
Honestly, this review was SUPER helpful and practical, the fact that Apple buries these important "features" in the Settings app that not a lot of people will think about while taking photos and videos is really important to know for getting the most out of your phone camera :D
You know, this has got to be one of the most honest and relatable reviews of that phone. All the other UA-camrs go into deep detail about how each feature works and how it’s better or worse than last gen, yet here’s Wade just straight up telling it how it is.
Ah yes, the new Irish airline: Aer Dingus. I've also never owned a smartphone in my life, but newer flip phones are still coming out that allow you to get the calls and texts thing done without having the toxic rectangle that spews content at you. I have an older Kyocera DuraXE, and that suits me fine. It can also survive a five-story drop!
Great video. Putting everyday use and point out what the normal consumer is gonna deal with is great. I work for att and I’m tired of explaing to ppl the minor differences between the past 3 phones
Wade I knew you did cars and drums as well as phones, but finding out you where the one that made those Simpsons' remixes I used to watch as a kid blew my mind. Bravo Sir, and thank you for being a true UA-cam polymath.
While I don’t use my phone to film in the same way you do, I do heavily relate to scouring the settings to turn of new “features” I don’t want. I’ve been hanging out on my iPhone 8 for years now and only really looking to upgrade because the battery is getting cooked, but it feels like it’s every other day there’s an update that just shuffles around stuff because… idk, they felt like it?
@@animeloveer97personally i’d say get an upgrade, 8s are fine but if you have the money you can use the battery dying out as an actual excuse/reason to upgrade
@@animeloveer97 I’ve been considering it, but with things like the new iOS not even getting to this generation, and the “don’t need but would be nice” of the better camera/screen/etc, I feel it’s time
I used to work in Onboard Image Stabilization. Those elements take up a lot of space + cost, and have to be even better for a 0.5x lens. They may have left it out assuming a bad answer would cost more and be received worse than no 0.5x OIS at all.
The 0.5x on this phone is straight garbage anyway, I wish they gave us both 3 and 5x instead of an ultrawide that looks 10 years behind the main lens. I’m coming from an S22 ultra and while the main lens on the iPhone is better, the 0.5x and zoom lens are pretty bad 😂
I love that you run many extremely successful channels with phones as cameras. It really shows how good they truely are. I see a lot of people invrst a ton of money into cameras just to try content creation. Its not necessary. The barrier to entry is small and its all about the content and the creator.
@@p_serdiuk i think he did a great job illustrating that you can use older models which can be had, used, for cheap, and you can edit on the phone itself or on a basic pc. Macbook pro is not required to get started at all.
Honestly this is making me realize that if I want to get a decently priced mid-tier camera that's separate from my daily phone, I should probably just get a used iPhone.
Don’t opt for iPhone, they are known for ‘premium’ Products but also for a ‘premium’ price. If you go for a Android phone you would get some really smooth phones with a very good camera for the fraction of the price of a Iphone. And yes they are still very good. Have some nice lightning (for in the dark) and the resolution is also great. I bought some IPhones back in the day but I switched because of the potential of Android phones.
@@gielnw9891 You're peddling points that were the truth 10 years ago mate. If you look at Samsung's galaxy phone line (or most of the better android offerings) vs Apple's offerings today, you'll see that the prices are basically 1:1
@@gielnw9891 I actually do have a Pixel myself! It does have a very nice camera. But there was a time where I was thinking of getting a decent standalone camera for outdoorsy stuff so I could leave my phone in my bag and not have to worry about losing it or dropping it. Though buying a used smartphone is cheaper than most camera options these days anyway. So if I bought a used phone I'd probably be buying it solely based on how well it works as a camera.
THANK YOU so much for the settings searching because these are so specific but so niche and really hard to find. I was trying to find why my frames would dip randomly and it made so much sense after your video. Cheers mate
We've hit the point where new phones very rarely offer anything actually new. The only reason I really ever went from the S22 Ultra to the S23 Ultra was just cos it had a bit better battery life (tho still barely gets a full day of use off charge). Almost everything else is still the same
I have an S 21+, the battery life it’s absolutely horrible. I can barely get three hours out of moderate to heavy usage and then I have to charge again. I’m to the point to where I have to charge my battery three times a day. Samsung has really fell off on their game.
Like a wise man's mother said: "use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without" literally we've come to the point where even a old flagship phone from 1 to 2 years is good enough. Edit: i understand that people doesn't think the same about a 100$ phone
@pablojams5152 I mean, a cheap phone can accomplish about 90% of a flagship, sure it would not have a amazing camera, screen or processor, but using it for social media like X, Facebook, Instagram, UA-cam you can.
@@MizushimaNaomiz yeah, then say that lmao. “Rivaling” is a very specific term. Because you know what, a Chromebook can do 90% of what a $4000 gaming PC can do, but people don’t buy the gaming PC to browse the web and check emails. People buy flagship phones for the features that come with, typically
These “features” remind me of windows spatial sound. I turned it on to see what it does. Turns out it makes everything echo, and in one game one game only it makes gun shots 200% louder then everything else. Which is fun when theres always atleast 5 guns going off.
windows spatial sound has applications for specifically spatial audio processing but none of that tech is really utilized by games so it just applies a reverby wide stereo to everything and sounds awful. windows spatial sound isn’t bad for some premade audio playback though
Wow. This is honestly one of the best demonstrations of how the "smart" camera features affect recording video. I wasn't even aware of this. Great video, mate! You're doing a service to us all
When I was watching the garbage time video about the car salesman I noticed those lenses switching and it drove me nuts. I remember thinking "Why would anyone want that?". Happy to know Dankpods feels the same lol.
Thank you so much for the PSA! I got the 15 Pro and a DJI hand gimble for getting nice video on an upcoming vacation. I would’ve been livid had Auto FPS and Stereo Audio been enabled, as they WERE
It looks like there's a colour shift too as you zoom in and it switches to that 5x zoom! (though I guess not super noticeable in a real world use case?)
I got a 13 Pro, not Max, specifically for the camera. The wide-angle lens nearly blew my mind and has fully replaced my old standalone camera with a proper wide-angle. I'm going to be using that sucker for as long as possible, because the changes between phones are too incremental to go year-to-year.
The combination of zooming and sound vibration absolutely killed me hahahahahahahahahaha. But honestly, i got 15 pro max for 5x zoom specifically for videos, and i HATE that it does the stupid "jump" when it switches the lenses. I hope there is some kind of software update to help smooth it over automatically.
I miss my OG Razer Phone. It still performed great and took pretty good photos even with the software i was using. But sadly the first thing to kick you in the nuts these days is simply the battery. They'll only take so many charge cycles before they start to go bad.. and replacing them isn't all that easy.
It’s funny that Apple tried using Titanium on the PowerBook G4 already, and it also had lots of issues with paint chipping. 20 years later the 15 pro max that’s made out of titanium…has the same problem. XD
I appreciate your approach, man. Honest but not overly negative about the shortcomings. I basically have to upgrade this year from my X and I’m feeling down about it, as well as not knowing which to get, Pro or Pro Max. Those other reviewers claim honesty but it’s just manufactured negativity. You’re out here making fun of these stupid quirks and features and it makes me feel better about what I’m gonna get. It’s gonna be an upgrade no matter what! Subbing!
It's because a lot of those reviewers who claim they've received no compensation for the reviews are also quite happy to take free all expenses paid trips, home and abroad, and eat at fancy restaurants on companies money. They've been bought and paid for by freebies and access to review units (release day review videos do far better after all).
"You already have a toxic rectangle spewing trash into your brain. Why do you need another?" That made me laugh so hard. There are whole movies about phones being terrible for you, and he summed up every one of them in one sentence 😂😭
I'm convinced that the cameras on phones these days are made mostly for content creators rather than the general consumer because it is something that can easily be shown off in reviews "see look how much better this phone is than the older ones" as the cameras are all that's really different these days. But I don't need to see a carefully staged shot from five different phones. What would be more useful for me, and most I suspect most, is how the photos are when you pull the phone from your pocket and quickly take a snap because something cool is happen with your kid or pet or when you're out and see something in nature that you don't have time to stop and frame properly.
I like the mrwhoseeboss videos but his phone reviews about the cameras go right over my head. Like said here about the Sony v a phone camera you've gotten used to. Most will never use all those features and plenty like me won't understand the nuance of the changes being made anyway. Sometimes my sister says 'oh that's a great quality photo' and all I've done is point and press the big white button. That's all I ever do.
I was like “aww man he’s got like every recent generation accept for mine” (I have a 12 pro) and the he just added that little segment at the end and it made me so happy
You can do one zoom with your mirrorless, but you have to have the rig for it. You can go minimal, with "paddles" (basically rings that fit around the controls on the lens and reach back to your fingers around the grip) OR you can go rig. An aluminium exoskeleton that gives you double grip either side (which is also good for lefties), which can be setup with paddle "shifts" on both sides so you can swap hands if you want. Depending on how well you set it up, you can do it all with one hand.
@@fastgecko5799 You do know there's such a thing as 3D printing and DIY, right? Also, these days China's pumping a ton of stuff that's decent enough in the usual places. Setting up all that rigging you're talking about? Probably would kill his fun.
The want vs need argument is very applicable to modern day phones. I have a phone from 2016 and it still can do pretty much everything I need to. Yeah I have to keep a charger in my car to keep it topped off on battery but by the time I’m done doing what I’m doing and go back to my car I can just plug it back in in-between destinations.
You prob know by now, but the mic zoom is so you can hear the sound from the distance that you're shooting at, and the auto fps is possibly to honor the 180 degree shutter rule (nerdy info, in short its the idea that you should keep your shutter speed twice your frame rate) or at least just so that it can reduce the shutter speed so that it can maintain the same exposure in low light.
You tell it like it is!!! The only honest tech review of this iPhone 15 and Apple Too many other tech reviews drool over the iPhone without being honest about it Good job
Interesting about the "Record Stereo" function. I checked my 14PM and with iOS 17, that function is there. I have to do some experiments and analyze the audio in my studio to see what's really going on. If you turn that switch off and the phone records in mono, that would be a real shame.
I will say that on my 12 Pro Max I was SHOCKED how incredibly well my phone could handle editing literally 4K footage in realtime using LumaFusion, it almost convinced me to stop using my computer entirely
5:57 yeah, that's definitely a feature, and it isn't new. My 12 Pro Max does it as well. I don't smooth-zoom though, just step between the zoom levels as radio buttons. It makes sense to me. Switch to telephoto, you probably want to hear the sound coming from far away where the camera is pointed, so down mix audio from the front-facing mics. You're right though. They should handle that more thoughtfully. Or give your multitrack audio and let you mix it yourself.
From what I recall the record steep sound feature is supposed to (attempt) to isolate the sounds of what your zooming into which is why your voice gets quieter.
Yeah. People simply don’t do ANY modicum of research on products anymore. They just whine and cry when they don’t understand a setting or feature then blame the product. Ah well. That’s just the way of the world.
@@YTC1234 I think the bigger issue was the fact that it was named "Record stereo sound" which an average person would probably interpret as recording two-channel audio rather than as a "microphone zooming" feature.

1:16 You have FINE tastes sire. The a7siii is the BEST camera I've ever owned and even with more and more newer cams coming out my love for my a7siii grows only more still.
Have you ever considered a Compact Superzoom camera? People don't like them because they think of them as grandma cameras, but they satisfy this niche excellently because they're small and uncomplicated. Something like the RX100 VII, where it shoots in 4K, has a super long optical zoom range and has those pro type features like external mics and flashes. I will say I don't know what the max record time is and I also don't know if it does 4K 60, so who knows. I think the iPhone is still probably the best when it comes to keeping a simple simple workflow though, especially because you use a mac. Anyway, I just like to put that out there because I like mine (I use a way older CSZ from canon though).
I love how dankpods makes his reviews because he does and show stuff that is genuinely practical or something we would actually do in our day to say life's n stuff. All in a funny aussie package.
That's how I felt about my iPhone 13 Mini, I loved that it fit in my hand so nicely while still having all the specs of the 13 but once I got it the happy stopped there. The camera quality was far worse than the X it replaced, it glitched way more, the keyboard would go nuts for no reason, it would slow down randomly and then start deleting music out of my library. Wasn't even mad when it met its untimely death after 8 months
Interesting my girlfriend has an iPhone 13 mini, she’s owned it for a while now. It is still fairly new though, But she has had no issues with the phones and she got it
@@ButtMcDuck Well to be fair I was the one who killed it after the 8 millionth time it glitched I threw it straight at the wall and it shattered into a bunch of pieces, it was fully insured and the mini was discontinued so I upgraded
I concur, for the most part. The biggest gripe with the mini series is the battery life. It is the biggest reason why I'd like to switch device. The glitchiness is probably due to poor iOS updates -- the same has happened to me and many others. They don't make `em like they used to...
The fact that smartphones haven't really changed all that much is why I haven't felt pressured to upgrade my Pixel 6. Hell, the only reason I moved on from my Pixel 3a XL was due to it falling apart. The 6 does everything I need it to and I have no reason to move on from it. It'd be nice to have a new phone, but I'm not that bothered.
I go 5 years between phones. The main thing I do is keep the apps to purely what I actually use. If its occasional I just install it when I need it that one time in the year then delete it again. I dont need it then running in the background all the while. Also battery charging. I never leave my phones charging overnight and only charge them to 90%. My Mate 10 Pro still had 90% battery life after 5 years! Just gone to a Nord 3. On the One+ forums its full of people moaning about the standby battery life. But mine sips power. I go to bed with 89% power and wake up in the morning with 88%. I bet there are 300 apps on those phones...all constantly phoning home with data.
Sounds about right. I had a pixel 1 til this year and the only reason I switched was because the battery was terrible (a fairly normal complaint for a phone that's 7 years old) and things were starting to lag out pretty bad (again. 7 years old.) And I love my 7a, the camera stuff is great or whatever but what I think what I really love about it is that it's not on the brink of death and it has the new android stuff (pixel 1 was still on android 10, because that was the last update it received). I love all the new accessibility stuff also, it's great.
Also rocking the Pixel 6 Pro, I love this phone! Camera is great, battery life gets me through the whole day without any problem. Connects flawlessly with my car and camera equipment. The screen is bright enough for mostly every weather. And the Pixel features are insane.
I've been pretty much entirely satisfied with my 6 Pro as well, buuuut the most recent Android 14 update locked me out of all my phone's storage in the primary profile along with at least 200 other Pixel owners and Google still hasn't publicly acknowledged this bug. It's really taken my esteem for the Pixel brand down a lot, seeing Google just sit on their hands about this.
i think a lot of people still expect to upgrade phones every year. dont. we’re at the point that you can wait 5+ years between upgrades. i stuck with my XR since it’s release year and only got a 15 pro for the usb-c, better cameras and resolution, and faster processor. but, especially if you don’t care much about those, use your phone for as long as you feel you can. plus, if you wait to upgrade, you’ll get more cool features all at once when you do!
I 'upgrade' because I can get next to the same value of my device and pay $100 - 200 to get the new one. It remains in good condition so it holds value. That was with iPhones. Hold it any longer the battery and value goes down. I'm using a pixel now. I like the software better. iPhone video is still king though
@@Anon.G Also take care of your battery if you actually care. No fast charging, limited inductive charging, don't let the battery drop below 20% or go above 80% and then you are pretty good to use the battery for quite a long while. I did nothing of the above and managed to squeeze ~6 years out of my Galaxy S8. According to those third party battery apps it's got ~2400mAh of 3000 left, but it's definetly losing charge quicker than normal, by far even.
Sony's top end Xperias also have had image stabilisation for years. The pro video/photo modes let's you select a lens out of the box. Yes it's a separate app but it's got all the features you actually need(exposure settings/grids/white balance/even level) in one place.
Man let's be honest here best photo camera phone there's a big market, but best video phone I go iphone, and I had Xperia and I have 5k€ of Sony camera gear that film Great, but if I have to buy a phone to film, it's gonna be iphone
@@DeathInTheSnowIf you're within an eco system, have your workflows set up and the hardware still fits your suit albeit with minor issues, it doesn't make sense to change into an entirely different ecosystem on a whim
It does if the ecosystem sucks. Otherwise you're just falling into the sunk cost fallacy. The only way to upgrade Apple products is to buy a whole new one. And don't even think about repairing one. If it wasn't for the EU forcing Apple to follow regulations, they'd be even more closed off to other systems and even more terrible.
I upgraded to a 15 pro from my iPhone mini because the battery life on the mini was horrible. Besides that though, the mini could’ve easily got me through another two years.
This is a really niche complaint that probably doesn’t apply to many people but I HATE the automatic macro mode on the pro models. I have an indie makeup instagram that requires a lot of photos of eyeshadows and swatches. When I got the 14 pro the macro mode totally destroyed my pictures like it was just way too over focused everything just looked washed out. I had to return it for the base 14 and now I’m on the 15 plus. I can’t go back to pro until the macro mode is gone or able to be turned off permanently.

I traded in my pixel 4a for a 7 earlier this year solely to have a decent phone to keep for 5+ years (even though the new shiny 7 year update thing from the 8 isn't getting backported to it but I'll figure out how to unlock the bootloader and keep it updated myself). Apple and Samsung really want you to think that you need a shiny new phone every year by locking features into the newer rectangles even when the older phones can comfortably accomodate it. Even Google does it! The new "Pro" camera features on the 8 Pro work on the older phones!
If you like 4k 60FPS, you should give the Sony Xperia PRO I a shot, it shoots 4k 120 FPS, has a headphone jack, and some other neat features. Not so sure about how good Sony's software is or how point and click it is but It might be worth a shot no? Also, for video stabilization, the Zenphone 9 and 10 use gimbal stabalisation
Nahhhh. Don't get a Sony phone. The updates after 12 is total dog water. I had to install another default home app because the DEFAULT Xperia home breaks and UI just stops working and I constantly had to restart my phone. Plus the pro cinema app is as complex as an actual DSLR camera without the benefits of interchangeable lenses
I was researching the new Mk5 phones, and I can tell you that their software/point-and-shoot/automatic mode is pure garbage. They take way too over-exposed and washed out photos and videos. It's no better than a mid-range phone, seriously. And when you take a look at the prices...
Sony's philosophy is that they want to replace digital cameras with their phones. Because of that they give you a lot of knobs in the camera app but at the cost of its point and click capabilities (which mostly come down to various ai/dl algorithms). You can work around it by installing gcam. Tbh I think he could do far better looking vids with Sony but would need to spend a while to understand how to use it properly.
@@GaminylGames Yes, but generally in video editing having more framerate to work with on raw video allows you to get much cleaner results, you can also do some pretty cool slow motion stuff - if the raw video is at 120fps, changing the framerate to 30fps slows the video down to 1/4 of its original speed. giving full quality slow motion video.

The opening actually touches on a realisation i had recently: there are almost no mid-tier products left
If you want a camera its either some crap for ten bucks that barely functions, or its an incredibly complex machine that you need to learn and master.
Same with media players, its either knock of nuggets, or some high end stuff you really invest in.
Like, i dont mind spending some money on something i love, but i have many hobbies, and nowadays everything just seems to call out "you gotta pick one and stick to it, if youre not willing to drop 300 dollars on this, you dont like the hobby enough, and you should buy landfill that will break in less than a year like the rest of the plebs"
Like no my guy, i jus want _decent_ stuff. It doesnt have to be hand crafted by tibettan monks doing a handstand, i just want a propper, decent start to a hobby to try it out
I completely agree with you on this one
I know some people have there reservations but I think Oppo works really well as a mid-tier product, it's got all the new features, good build quality (my A57 lasted me 8 years) and comes with a reasonable price tag. Samsung's A series are also similarly good.
I think it's simply because most mid-tier products no longer need to exist as a decent smartphone can replace them.
Ultimately I think it's because the flagship phones are the only thing most people are seeing marketing for. So many people just buy whatever schlock is advertised to them, regardless if it's financially and practically a terrible buy.
I recently was looking for a mid-range audio player too. I know the struggle lmao

Almost iPhones move the sensor and not the lens
@@carmadme Right. I think i heard that before but i forgot.
This comment is mostly bullshit. High end stabilisation is predominantly optical.

I miss my OG Razer Phone. It still performed great and took pretty good photos even with the software i was using. But sadly the first thing to kick you in the nuts these days is simply the battery. They'll only take so many charge cycles before they start to go bad.. and replacing them isn't all that easy.
Yup. I had it too. The speakers were incredible. I always had it on battery saver within the first month of having it.
Mine broke apart easily the 2nd one too
It’s funny that Apple tried using Titanium on the PowerBook G4 already, and it also had lots of issues with paint chipping.
20 years later the 15 pro max that’s made out of titanium…has the same problem. XD
Hopefully they switch back to Stainless Steel in a future Pro iPhone.

So unless you're talking over a video, probably useful to keep the stereo sound on.

Lumavision yer say.

@@jimmyjimjims7483What was the return window for the phone?
I mean the pixel 6 is barely 3 years old at this point and it has plenty of software support left
For such negative title, that was a pretty positive review. Can't wait to upgrade from iPhone 7 to 16 Pro in a year.
I thought it was the video glitching before when he zoom before he explained the camera transition lmao
i think a lot of people still expect to upgrade phones every year.
dont.
we’re at the point that you can wait 5+ years between upgrades. i stuck with my XR since it’s release year and only got a 15 pro for the usb-c, better cameras and resolution, and faster processor. but, especially if you don’t care much about those, use your phone for as long as you feel you can.
plus, if you wait to upgrade, you’ll get more cool features all at once when you do!
The problem with keeping a phone that long is the battery degradation. If we could have more replaceable batteries, then I'd completely agree.
@@Anon.Gforced replaceable batteries are coming with eu laws by 2028
I 'upgrade' because I can get next to the same value of my device and pay $100 - 200 to get the new one. It remains in good condition so it holds value. That was with iPhones. Hold it any longer the battery and value goes down.
I'm using a pixel now. I like the software better. iPhone video is still king though
@@Anon.G that’s fair. i personally didn’t have too big of issues tho, battery still lasted me pretty much all day
@@Anon.G Also take care of your battery if you actually care.

This is a really niche complaint that probably doesn’t apply to many people but I HATE the automatic macro mode on the pro models. When I got the 14 pro the macro mode totally destroyed my pictures like it was just way too over focused everything just looked washed out. I had to return it for the base 14 and now I’m on the 15 plus. I can’t go back to pro until the macro mode is gone or able to be turned off permanently.
This seems like a camera setting that should be adjustable though, have you looked for if it can be turned off?
You can turn that off in the camera app with that little flower icon that appears when iPhone thinks you want to take a macro shot
Its a setting in camera

Sony's philosophy is that they want to replace digital cameras with their phones. Because of that they give you a lot of knobs in the camera app but at the cost of its point and click capabilities (which mostly come down to various ai/dl algorithms). You can work around it by installing gcam.
Tbh I think he could do far better looking vids with Sony but would need to spend a while to understand how to use it properly.
UA-cam doesn't even support 120fps video to my knowledge
@@GaminylGames Yes, but generally in video editing having more framerate to work with on raw video allows you to get much cleaner results, you can also do some pretty cool slow motion stuff - if the raw video is at 120fps, changing the framerate to 30fps slows the video down to 1/4 of its original speed. giving full quality slow motion video.
