      There's a name I haven't thought of for a long time.
The first time I read "Night", I was about 9 years old. I spent about 6 hours at the foot of my bed that night running in place JUST to see if I could have come close to surviving some of the things they were put through. I remember going to sleep after thinking that wasn't so bad... then waking up with floppy tubes full of PAIN instead of legs.
The sentiment is entirely true though. Throughout history (and especially American history) it has taken an overwhelming majority to actually change things. Far more than 50% of people were in favor of ending slavery, and yet it still took a Civil War to finally get it done. Far more than half believe women should have the right to choose, and yet not only did it take a while to get that legal right, but then it got taken away WHILE IT STILL HAD POPULAR SUPPORT!
Far more than half the population wants sensible gun reform, nationalized health care, an increased minimum wage, a reformation of campaign finance, and a plethora of other things, and yet because a vast swath of the population refuses to even stand up to be counted, let alone put voice and action to their stance unless they are personally affected, nothing gets done.

It works because most people have a very shallow understanding of politics that's limited to elections, parties, and false dichotomies. However storytelling is an inherently political act; politics are embedded in every story as well as the choosing of which stories to tell. The few things I remember about her show are very political, as are many of her songs. I'd guess she's at least as "left" as the Democratic Party, maybe somewhere around Katie Porter.

There's an old expression, "Live and let live," that today's Puritans would be advised to consider. This applies to drag shows, to library books that might offend some (very few) readers, and ideas in general that question closed-minded attitudes. Sooner or later, all the "controls" put on ideas get broken down and discarded. The free market in ideas tends in one direction, and it definitely isn't toward authoritarianism. Some people are blind to this reality. Sucks to be them...
