- #SHIMANO105 ON A $250 GRAVEL BIKE FROM WALMART? WHAT?!?!? YEA, THIS IS LIKELY NOT A ROUTE THAT YOU WANT TO TAKE UNLESS YOU EITHER HAVE SOMETHING NICE LIKE THIS IN THE #PARTSBIN , OR IF YOU CAN GET YOURSELF A STEAL OF A DEAL ON THE USED MARKET. I FOUND THIS ON FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE FOR AN AMAZING DEAL. THE PERSON I BOUGHT THE GROUPSET FROM, BOUGHT A BIKE WITH THIS SETUP AND REMOVED IT AND REPLACED WITH SOMETHING ELSE. HIS LOSS WAS MY GAIN. :-) #CYCLING #GRAVEL #WALMART #OZARKTRAIL #G1EXPLORER #MTB #GRAVELBIKE #BUDGET #UPGRADE #DIY #HACK
Gotta say it's better than those big brand gravel bikes that are at 1200$ with mechanical disc brakes!!
Very nice upgrades! Really enjoying you G1 content and mods. Still on the fence about buying one and what I would need/want to change. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you. I’d pull the trigger. It’s such a low risk at $248. It works great as is with no major modifications needed right away. You can get it, ride it and upgrade things to your preference as needed over time 😊
Your size isn't *that* awkward... I'm 5'8 with 28" legs. LOL. (mine are square though,,, 28 long, 28 around). :)
Fun video to watch
Nice find! For s&g's, I picked up one of these from wally world to try it out. I'm a bugger guy so it went right back, the frame was not made for me. 220 lb weight limit was also scary for me. Impressive bike for the kids though at $249. Ended up picking up a Poseidon X Ambition drop and can't say enough good about it. XXL frame is appreciated. Great video!
Wow, that’s exactly what I was suggesting with the shimano 105s. Smart move. And 24lbs is not bad for the price.
105. Right on! Great build.
Thanks man! It rides so good in stock form…but this just takes it to another level.
Hydraulic 105 on a walmart bike. Hell yes. Now you just need to beat everyone in local races and my dreams will have come true. That gearing my be a bit tough for technical climbs but im dying to see how it goes.
Ha! Thanks man appreciate the comment. You’re right this gearing will suck on the trail. I’m going to test it out soon on the local trail. Just waiting for some cooler air 😊. But my intention is to use on road and paved path when the trails are closed.
How viable is this bike for use for cyclocross for someone who isn’t mechanically inclined (I barely can change tires 😢)
Sweet lookin' 105 hydraulics! The carbon fork is an awesome upgrade for your gravel bike. You choice selection for the components will make a big difference in the handling & performance of your bike. Very cool upgrades bro
Thanks. It rides so good in stock form. But I finally took it out tonight got in a quick 8 miles and it’s amazing how the components can make such a huge difference. Essentially at this point I just bought a $250 frame and “built” it up. All strategically though. I’m really only about $700 ish into it. So totally worth it in my opinion
Oh yeah, I agree. It's more of an economical way of choosing what components you want and also you decide on how much you want to spend instead of purchasing a bike that may turn out to be overkill. Your gravel build is a sick set-up. I am a believer in finding great deals and expanding from there with bicycle project upgrades. Excellent work!
Upgrading the tires to the Panaracer Gravel Kings SS or hybrid tires paired with that Shimano 105 R7000 groupset puts you somewhere in between road and intermediate gravel.
That Shimano 105 is road bike territory vs gravel or all-road.
Where the setups for those is a mix of MTB and Road gear ratios.
Gravel gears in a 2x setup have a 11-36T 10/11 speed paired with 48/36 or 46/32 front chainrings to get close to a 1:1 gear ratio and easier climbing.
Thanks for the info. I will likely never enjoy a gravel bike as it’s truly intended since there’s really no gravel routes around here. I’ve got the trail bikes for the dirt. This bike I intend to spend most of the time on the road. Getting in quick miles between those times I can’t make it to the trails.
Was the biggest weight savings from the carbon fork?
very nice groupset!
52/36 might be a bit much when you want to climb off-road. Totally sweet build but just my opinion.
Yes you’re absolutely correct. I plan to keep this 99% on the road. There’s not any real gravel riding close by. I took my Poseidon x out to the local trails last year, and it was fun, but it was sketchy as hell. I have trail bikes for the dirt.
My hope with this bike, it will help keep me honest. Trails are RED, no excuses go ride the Ozark. Too busy to get to the trails? Go ride the Ozark.
There is probably going to be a point during this riding season that I’ll take it out to the trail just for kicks 😂.
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Appreciate ya!
damn dude, a full 105 hydro set ! i've never managed to get my hands on a used set (hydro, doesn't have to be 105) drop bar levers from shimano. They tend to sell really fast or just be the same price as the new stuff which is too high for me. build looks mint !
You’re right….this was a big time score for me as I’d been looking for something like this for quite a while, they don’t come around too often and when they do. They’re either too expensive or like you said sell quickly.
Looks good. I think you should put some new tires on next because the kendas are probably slowing you down on the paved stuff.
Yes. I just changed the tires, the Kenda actually felt pretty good on the road. Higher pressure and no issues. I just did a tubeless setup with some maxxis tires I had on hand. There still gravel tires but they’re slightly less knobby same profile at 700x40. I prefer these gravel tires even on the road. They give more confidence, at least for me on our crumbling roads around here 😊
Love what you did with that bike
@@venicrable thanks. I kinda went overkill but I’m still ahead with a great bike for my use case 😊
I’m still debating whether to overkill a cheap bike or underkill an expensive one
@@venicrable ha! I’ve found that even when you spend bigger on better bikes, there’s always more to be desired out of some part of it. So upgrading will likely be inevitable no matter what 😊 plus it’s part of the fun
Do you have a link to replacement brake pads for the stock brakes?
@@jtekz_ I believe this is the ones I used…they didn’t help much, but I also didn’t have them very long before switching to the 105 setup

With 30t you may have an RD-R7000-SS (30t Max Rating). If you have a GS (34t Max Rating) they usually will function with an 11-36. The ratings are on the conservative side.
I didn't catch it if you said it but what wheels are you using?
JG BIKE from Amazon. I’ve had these for about 4 years. They’ve been a part of many builds in that time. When I got these the price was around $200 for the set.
@@MASHLEY69 sweet thanks
Nice find, but those are some steep road gears you have there. Just add skinny slicks and you're set!
Yes. This is my intention with this bike. There is no true “gravel” riding close by. I’m going to spend 99% of my miles on the pavement, when the trails are in poor condition. Or when I just want to get in a ride during lunch or whenever. Just hop on it and go.
Upgrade whatever you want. Ride whatever you want. The only people who should tell you what to do with your bike are the people who offer to pay for it.
@@BufordDuckworth amen brother! Thanks
I have Shimano tiagra coming now.
Sweet! I tell ya what. It was a real pain in the but getting all this to work, but it’s so worth it. You doing the work yourself?
Hey 👋 im also 5'7 what size did you buy?
I went medium.
@@MASHLEY69 is that the one that's 5'6 to 5'9 i was looking at one last week but was not sure about the sizing
so its 250 dollar bike with 1800 dollar kit....lame af bro
Technically yes, it’s super overkill. But for what I have invested here is a bike that fits my needs for under 800 bucks. So I guess if that’s lame as fuck, well … you’re entitled to your opinion and I can appreciate that.
There are those people out there that like to upgrade their 99' Honda Civic to perform like a Ferrari... as I like to say each to their own.

R7000 w/ Hyd Disc is $700 new and $400 takeoff on Ebay.
It's dropped a lot since R7100 came out.
BTW I have mixed Tiagra R4720 (34/50 Compact) and Deore on my $100 clearance special (Bianchi San Jose CM 4130 Frame) and I don't consider it lame. It cost me less than Tourney would have new.
Be funny if his lame ass passed your over priced ass on the trail.
How viable is this bike for use for cyclocross for someone who isn’t mechanically inclined (I barely can change tires 😢)
I think it could work well for cyclocross, its got the foundation to be modified, fairly easy for almost any type of riding and terrain. Don't be intimidated by working on your own bike. watching videos and following along with what you are trying to accomplish when working on bikes is a great starting point. before you know it you will be servicing your own bikes, building wheels and much more. :-)
@@MASHLEY69 I’m hoping so. I botched up a tired change. Followed a different video in UA-cam and was not only successful but took a fraction of the time of the first attempt. I want to do some more simple stuff like clean the drivetrain.
