I dont know much about Johnny Mathis, but what I do know is that my grandad loved him, one of his favourite artists I think. He's been gone for 2 years. I found out the music he listened to because I was told about the music he chose for his funeral. This song holds a special place in my heart, because the bond I shared with my grandad was one of the strongest bonds in my entire family, and probably the strongest bond I will ever make.
Dressed for the times....about this period my dad, Mike Lucas, became Johnny's tour pianist. I feel very fortunate to have tagged along with my father to experience Johnny in person. 80 and doing well!
My late mum loved Johnny. It was not until my mums funeral when this very song was played and I thought 'wow, this is fantastic' Every Christmas when I hear 'When a child is born' I can't help thinking of my mum. I know everything single word. You must be so proud of your dad. Wow, if anybody asks 'what did your dad do?' Oh, he played the piano for Johnny Mathis!' High praise indeed :-)

I grew up hearing Johnny Mathis in the home, because my Mom loved him from the 50s. His music really got under my skin, those hauntingly beautiful songs of his early career. When my Mom passed, I found myself listening to these songs again, to feel my Mom's presence, memory.. It was then that I really appreciated what an excellent, trained vocalist Johnny is ! I started to look up info about him. To my amazement, I discovered all his hits in every decade ! I loved those songs and was " Blown Away " that this was Mr. Mathis ! And he's still at it, touring !!! This song is the only song that Johnny Mathis did not " knock it out of the park " for me. I guess I am stuck on the falsetto version of this song. ...But I am so impressed what a true vocalist he is, arranging great songs in new ways.

My Ma had 2 of her songs she wanted played at her funeral and she asked me to pick one I picked this one as a thought appropriate I grew up with this music thanks to my Ma and this said it all she was going home. I thought it would have been years from now, but sadly we lost her too soon 3 years ago this July

In the seventies l went to Ibiza l went i to a record shop, l found a double Album of John l asked the shopkeeper to play the 2 LP'S he did got some strange looks from him, but l was in heaven. Wrapped it in 2 Beach towels to keep it safe on the way back to England. Ha.
